Walk over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which connects Newcastle and Gateshead on the beautiful Quayside. It’s the world’s first tilting bridge and its design is so energy efficient that it uses just £3.60 of electricity each time it opens. Energise your delegates on Life Science Centre’s 4D motion ride or experience an immersive journey through space in its planetarium – it’s the North’s biggest. Visit the site of the ‘new castle’ which gave the city its name. Newcastle Castle has one of the finest surviving medieval castle keeps in Britain and offers breathtaking views from its rooftop – a unique place to hold a drinks reception for your delegates.

Try your hand at creating your own glass work of art with a glassblowing experience at National Glass Centre, based on the banks of the River Wear in nearby Sunderland – it’s just a 25-minute Metro journey from Newcastle Central Station. Here, you can also learn about Sunderland’s rich glassmaking heritage.

Climb the 164 steps to the top of Grey’s Monument on a tour with Newcastle City Guides. The monument is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, Charles Grey who hailed from the North East and was British Prime Minister in the 1830s – the famous Earl Grey tea blend was named after him too! From here you can enjoy unrivalled views that few people have seen over Grainger Town’s magnificently preserved Georgian architecture.

Take in some live music at one of NewcastleGateshead’s many music venues. Metro Radio Arena attracts some of the biggest pop and rock acts, while Sage Gateshead, an international centre for music, is home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia and hosts jazz, folk and contemporary acts. The Cluny is a popular venue with intimate gigs from up-and-coming artists. Explore the North East’s Roman history and view archaeological finds from across the 73-mile stretch of Hadrian’s Wall at Great North Museum: Hancock. Top countryside experiences North East England’s rural venues offer your delegates plenty of space to think, all within easy commuting distance of NewcastleGateshead. With historic castles, luxury country house hotels, serene stately homes and plenty of active adventures on offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice when choosing your rural retreat.

Alnwick Castle

Located close to the stunning North East coast, NewcastleGateshead is just a short journey from traditional beach and seaside experiences. The funfair at South Shields is less than 30 minutes away by Metro and it takes just 20 minutes to reach Tynemouth – a quaint town of unusual shops, fantastic restaurants and bars, and – if you want to brave the North sea – great surf. Further north, you’ll reach the awe-inspiring Northumberland coastline – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Northumberland boasts more castles and fortified buildings than any other county in England, many of which sit on a coastal backdrop. Alnwick Castle, just 40 minutes from NewcastleGateshead, is a unique setting for banquets for up to 500 people. It’s home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, is the birthplace of Harry Hotspur, and has featured in both Downton Abbey and the first two Harry Potter films where it starred as Hogwarts – you can take a broomstick flying class on the very spot that Harry had his first lesson.

Explore the region’s 2,000 years of history and follow in the footsteps of the Romans along the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall. Many of the North East’s rural venues have fantastic spa facilities that are the perfect setting in which to kick back and relax after an intense conference session. The Serenity Spa at Seaham Hall has 17 treatment suites, a 20-metre pool, outdoor hot tubs and a spacious relaxation area. At Rockliffe Hall, spa butlers are on hand to keep you refreshed at its award-winning spa. What’s more, its luxurious new Spa Garden, which features an infinity edge hydrotherapy pool, can be hired for exclusive use. Ramside Hall recently opened its new spa, as part of a £16m investment, which included a second championship golf course and new luxury bedrooms. UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Annual Conference Delegates: 900 Venue: Metro Radio Arena

VisitEngland Awards for Excellence Delegates: 480 Venue: Sage Gateshead The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence recognise businesses that incorporate best practice and demonstrate excellence in customer service throughout their operation, and celebrate the very best in quality and innovation in the tourism sector. Sage Gateshead provided a stunning Quayside backdrop for the ceremony, which was held in May 2015. The glittering evening was a showcase for England’s best tourism products and an opportunity for finalists to celebrate their success. As the awards ceremony took place in the same year that Newcastle was a host city for the Rugby World Cup, rugby stars from Aviva Premiership team Newcastle Falcons made a guest appearance at the event.

From coordinating the venue search, through to organising great-value accommodation and experiences for guests and the after-party at the Hilton, your help has been invaluable… The event was a fantastic success and we were pleased to be able to involve the local community and provide a flavour of the North East for guests. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau made sure that all delegates received a warm Geordie welcome, with students from Newcastle and Gateshead colleges greeting visitors at key points in the city. From arrival at Central Station to finding their way to hotels and venues, friendly faces donning eventbranded rugby shirts were on hand to make VisitEngland’s guests feel at home.

Over 750 health professionals and those involved in the care of mothers and babies visited NewcastleGateshead from all over the UK to attend the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Annual Conference in November 2014. During the two days a mixture of innovative, entertaining and challenging presentations on a wide range of issues supporting breastfeeding were delivered by high-profile speakers. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau worked with the organising committee to bring the conference to the destination and over the 18 months leading up to the event, supported with everything from sourcing and booking the venue and accommodation right through to ensuring a warm welcome for those attending. Delegates were given the red carpet treatment as they stepped off the train. A dedicated welcome committee was on hand in the station to guide delegates to their hotels and provide all the information they needed to make the most of their stay.

On one occasion when we visited the Metro Radio Arena, we were welcomed with a flash mob of breastfeeding mums which was a nice touch and showed a local commitment to the issues that are so important to the Baby Friendly Initiative. Having received such a personal welcome ourselves, we had no doubt that our delegates would love the place… The Convention Bureau really pulled out the stops to make sure that our delegates had the best experience possible while in the city. 270 delegates from around the world attended a range of meetings, workshops and talks as part of The International Society of Paediatric Oncology European Neuroblastoma Group’s (SIOPEN) Annual General Meeting and 4th Neuroblastoma Research Symposium in November 2015.

Professional translators and interpreters from 22 countries gathered to talk the talk on Tyneside at the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI) conference in April 2015. Jonny Mitchell, head of Thornhill Academy in Dewsbury, which was featured in the Channel 4 series ‘Educating Yorkshire’, gave a keynote speech on making foreign languages relevant to the current generation of school pupils. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau supported ITI with organising the conference and helped to develop a conference fringe programme that provided delegates with a chance to relax and unwind with yoga, tai chi and salsa classes as well as trips to Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland castles to help them make the most of their time here.

NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau was instrumental in ensuring the success of our event. They took charge of the delegate accommodation for us, advised us on venues and provided invaluable PR help. The local information provided via their social media platforms played a huge part in building up the preconference buzz and our predominantly southern-based delegates left the region vowing to return for more North East hospitality.

The feedback from the meeting was excellent in all respects; the scientific content, the venue and the social programme, there was a real buzz that new progress in our understanding of the clinical and biological basis of neuroblastoma was being made. We could not have put on such an outstanding meeting without the expert help of Caroline Reed and her colleagues from the NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau and on behalf of all members of the local organising committee we would like to express our sincere gratitude for help with our conference planning over the last 12 months. Clinicians and scientists interacted and presented their research findings with an overall aim of improving the outlook for all patients with neuroblastoma around the world. Attendees enjoyed a drinks reception and a Northumbrian Piper at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, where guests looked out across the Quayside to see Gateshead Millennium Bridge illuminated in the SIOPEN conference colours. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau helped to source the perfect venue for the conference, assisting with several site visits. The team also helped to source accommodation and provided a booking website for delegates and a welcome and information desk at the hotel.

GETTING AROUND

QuayLink buses QuayLink buses offer a high-frequency, accessible and easy-to-use service, and are the best way to get around central NewcastleGateshead. Routes connect the attractions and sights of Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays with Newcastle Central Station, Haymarket Bus Station and Gateshead Interchange, as well as going north of the city centre to Gosforth and beyond and south to the wider Gateshead area.

NewcastleGateshead’s compact centre and range of travel options mean your delegates won’t be wasting time or money getting around, so that leaves more of both for them to enjoy.

All-day travel on QuayLink buses in the QuayLink Central Zone is included with a Conference Travel Card; however individual tickets can be bought from the driver. Ticket options include a single fare, all-day ticket and a weekly ticket.

METRO The Tyne & Wear Metro connects all the key points in the region and calls at Newcastle Central Station for links to national rail. Services link central NewcastleGateshead with the airport in 23 minutes, and the coast in 30 minutes. The Metro is the ideal way to get to the main shopping areas around Haymarket and Monument, and the hotels, cafés and restaurants of Jesmond. Metro trains run daily from 5.30am to midnight, every 5 - 10 minutes during the day and every 8 - 15 minutes in the evenings. A variety of ticket options can be bought from machines at all Metro stations, however all-day travel on the Metro system is included with a Conference Travel Card. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has teamed up with Tyne & Wear transport operator Nexus to develop the conference destination’s own dedicated travel card for delegates. The Conference Travel Card allows your delegates unlimited travel on the extensive Tyne & Wear Metro system and on board

NewcastleGateshead’s QuayLink buses inside the QuayLink Central Zone. As an event organiser you can purchase the card on behalf of your delegates and due to its flexible nature, you can specify how many days you would like the card to be valid for, depending on the length of your event.

Walking and cycling NewcastleGateshead has a compact city centre and is easy to navigate on foot, while taking in the sights on the way. Most conference venues, hotels and attractions are within a short stroll of each other. Likewise, both the city centre and surrounding region are easy to explore by bike, with trafficfree trails, forest routes and long-distance rides on offer. You can hire a bike (and enjoy a coffee and cake) at The Cycle Hub in the Ouseburn. It’s situated beside the River Tyne, meaning that you’ll be cycling pretty much on the flat in both directions from here on traffic-free routes, making it an ideal starting point. Local cycling information and maps plus guided rides are also available.

Tours Newcastle City Guides operate walking tours that are an ideal way to introduce your delegates to the city and explore its history and culture. The knowledgeable volunteers offer daily walks during the summer season, costing just £4. They also run a programme of over 40 heritage walks with various themes, including walks to the top of the iconic Grey’s Monument, and can arrange bespoke private walking tours for your group. Delegate welcome: We can arrange for a welcome service for your conference delegates at transport hubs including the airport or train station, or at your main hotel. Accommodation booking service: Our freeof-charge online accommodation booking service is designed to save conference organisers time and energy as well as making it easy for you to keep track of where all your delegates are staying. What is your largest venue? Metro Radio Arena is the largest flexible conference and events venue. It can seat 10,000 delegates theatre style in its auditorium. It has recently hosted Manufacturing and Engineering North East and the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative’s Annual Conference. Sage Gateshead has a capacity for up to 1,700 delegates in its majestic Hall One and has hosted all three major political party conferences, as well as other high-profile events including the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence and Thinking Digital.

Where is NewcastleGateshead? How far apart are Newcastle and Gateshead? Located in North East England, Newcastle (on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (on the south bank) are joined by seven bridges and have been transformed into a single cultural and vibrant destination: NewcastleGateshead. On the Quayside, it takes about one minute to walk across the river via either the historic Swing Bridge, or the stunning Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Does NewcastleGateshead have an airport? Yes. NewcastleGateshead has all the access links you’d expect from a major European city including its own international airport. Newcastle International Airport is just over 20 minutes from the city centre by Metro, and has direct flights to Dubai, New York, Amsterdam, London and Paris amongst 80 destinations worldwide.

How long does it take to get to NewcastleGateshead from London? NewcastleGateshead is easily accessible by air, rail and road. It has excellent connections from most major cities in the UK, with London being less than three hours away by rail, and one hour 15 minutes by air.

How safe is NewcastleGateshead? NewcastleGateshead is a safe city to visit and visitors receive a warm welcome. As

in all major European cities, however, it is recommended that you take the usual precautions to protect yourself and your personal belongings. When in the region, in the case of severe emergencies, dial 999 for police, fire, or ambulance, and for any other incidents, theft or assault, go to the nearest police station or contact Northumbria Police on 101.

What is the population? The NewcastleGateshead conurbation is home to over 480,000 and is widely considered to be the capital of the North East, which has a total population of 2.6 million.

What is the weather like? NewcastleGateshead is one of the driest cities in the UK. Average temperatures range from 12 to 19 degrees Celsius in the summer, 4 to 15 degrees Celsius in the spring and autumn, and from 1 to 7 degrees Celsius in the winter.

Is there a smoking ban in place? On 1 July 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smoke-free. Offices, restaurants, pubs, public transport, hotels, membership clubs and shopping malls are covered by the smoke-free legislation.
