Hello! EAT! NewcastleGateshead is one of the region’s great culinary success stories. From its first year, the annual festival of adventures in food has celebrated our local food industry and all the talented people that work in it. The North East is increasingly becoming recognised as one of the country’s best foodie destinations and EAT! NewcastleGateshead has definitely played its part in getting us there. EAT! supports North East food and drink producers as well as the next generation of young chefs, with many alumni of EAT! working in top restaurants in NewcastleGateshead. We’ve also discovered some amazing amateur cooks who will be taking to the kitchen again for EAT! 2013. This year is a special year as we are delivering a series of events that tie in with the British Science Festival, hosted by Newcastle University and involving Newcastle City Council and Northumbria University, which takes place Sat 7 – Thurs 12 September.

If there was a perception that NewcastleGateshead was a food desert when EAT! launched in 2007 then things sure have changed! Barely a week goes by without some exciting gastronomic event, restaurant or new food product launch in the North East, we’re leading the way with our creativity, commerce and cooking! Now EAT! is back to shake things up with a bigger than ever platter of adventures in food. The new early autumn slot presents a fresh palette of seasonal produce and (we hope) a sunset backdrop for outdoor dining. So grab a fork and get stuck in to the very best North East food and drink. Simon Preston Festival Director

Seven years on I also want to say a huge thanks to all the individuals and organisations that make EAT! the success that it is. I’m delighted to welcome you to another tasty two weeks of food discovery, so get out there and get eating! Carol Bell Head of Culture and Major Events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative

Britain is going through a food revolution and we think NewcastleGateshead is helping to lead the way. In the mid 90s a new kind of chef burst onto our TV screens and suddenly it was cool to cook old-school skills still mattered but great ingredients and flavours mattered more. Most of all, we learned that food was meant for sharing.

There’s a new breed of young chef coming up through our kitchens today, inspired to cook great food by such strong role models and passionate about provenance. We’ve plucked six unknowns (for now) from their nurturing kitchens at Blackfriars, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, David Kennedy and Fenwick, who will each cook a stripped-down convivial feast for you in a striking outdoor location. Take your place at a beautifully laid communal table for a welcome cocktail and three-course menu showcasing the very best local, seasonal ingredients deftly handled by these young chefs. Share great food, enjoy the conversation and raise a glass to local talent.

Dinner will be served on Fenwick Rooftop, at Vallum Farm and at Rising Sun Farm. See website for times, chefs and tickets for each location. When Thurs 29 – Sat 31 Aug Tickets £27.50 – £49.50

FoUnd ForAGinG It’s time to take your cinema seats but you can pass on the popcorn. Still the only event of its kind, we’re showing classic foodie movies that you can watch, hear and taste. It’s like a 3D movie but with a fork, not silly glasses.

Food for free is all around you – you just need to know where to look. Follow our expert forager Miro Bernard who’ll point out the leaves, the undergrowth, the fruits and flowers that, with a little knowhow, you can turn into fab meals and drinks. Afterwards, you’ll turn your free basket into a wild meal.

bike-in Tampopo (18) Once described as a ‘noodle western’, this is a funny and satirical look at Japanese food ‘rules’ and the search for the perfect ramen recipe. Meet the eponymous noodle queen, a mysterious truck driver and bizarre cast of characters who help her. And do try not to lose the plot as you’re served matched food by Electric East. Cycle in and get a free bike tune up while you watch the movie.
