Social activities ‘aroond the toon’

Film school

We’ve always thought that NewcastleGateshead offers one of the best delegate experiences around and organisers can make the most of this by introducing social elements to their conference. From shooting and starring in their own film, to cocktail-making alchemy or walking the roof of an iconic building – there’s so many activities your delegates will love.

At Tyneside Cinema, delegates can get a taste of stardom by shooting, editing and starring in their own film at its spectacular Pop-Up Film School.

Science of cocktails At Life Science Centre, delegates can discover the solar system at the planetarium, take a seat on the 4D motion ride, or enjoy a hands-on ‘Science of Cocktails’ workshop where they get the chance to explore the science behind some of their favourite tipples.

Glass making Delegates can explore Sunderland’s glass-making heritage from the 7th century to present day at the National Glass Centre, and can even have a go at creating their own glass artwork with a one-to-one glassblowing experience.

Medieval banquet

Walk the roof

Blackfriars hosts authentic medieval banquets in the UK’s oldest dining hall, which was established in 1239 as a Dominican friary. In the candlelit hall, friars and town wenches serve guests a feast of pottage and pies, smoked fish, roast meats and cheese washed down with ale and fine wine.

At Sage Gateshead, delegates can walk the roof and take in a breathtaking view of NewcastleGateshead like no other, while learning about the unique architecture of this Sir Norman Foster-designed building.

Musical masterclass Delegates can ‘perform’ at Sage Gateshead, an international home for music, with a range of bespoke musical sessions from banging steel drums to playing the fiddle or ukulele.

Broomstick training at ‘Hogwarts’ At Alnwick Castle, which featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter movies, delegates can take part in a broomstick training session on the very spot where Harry had his first flying lesson.

8/

Step back in time Delegates can step back in time and experience decades of history at Beamish Museum – enjoying supper at a coal-fired fish and chip shop, and exploring the recreated Edwardian pit village in the open-air museum.

Golf If you’re keen on the green you’ll be amazed by the golf facilities in the North East, with our standout championship golf courses where delegates can challenge colleagues as well as honing their skills with a lesson or on the driving range. Close House is home to the world’s only Lee Westwood golf course which opened in June 2013, while Rockliffe Hall boasts one of the longest golf courses in Europe.

North East England’s rural venues offer delegates plenty of space to think, all within easy commuting distance of NewcastleGateshead. With historic castles, luxury hotels and serene stately homes, organisers are spoilt for choice when choosing a setting for conferences, meetings, team building and training events.

Active minds

Longsands Beach, Tynemouth

Where better to inspire your delegates than a venue that has been hosting gatherings for hundreds of years? The North East is famed for its beautiful castles and grand stately homes, many of which are now leading conference and meetings venues. One of the most well-known, Northumberland’s magnificent battlemented Alnwick Castle, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and is the birthplace of Harry Hotspur. What’s more, it also featured as Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter film series.

It’s a 360-degree adventure at many rural venues – delegates can carefully negotiate a poison garden, quad bike, take on their colleagues at paintball or try some clay-pigeon shooting. What’s more, they can explore the tree tops at Go Ape at Matfen Hall or Beamish Wild ropes activity course. Even the choice of active adventures on offer in the North East gets the heart pumping.

Rural relaxation

A conference in the North East provides the perfect opportunity to treat your delegates to an area with stunning natural beauty, miles and miles of awe-inspiring coastline, thousands of years of history and heritage plus rugged moorland and forests to explore. It’s also home to the world-famous Hadrian’s Wall, where delegates can follow the footsteps of the Romans along a stunning ‘necklace’ of Roman wall and forts which form a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Many of our rural venues dotted around the North East have fantastic spa facilities that are the perfect setting to kick back and unwind in after an intense meeting or training session. Tees Valley’s Rockliffe Hall recently received the AA’s coveted five red stars. This luxurious restored hall boasts an awardwinning spa with a 20-metre swimming pool plus ‘spa butlers’ on hand to keep guests refreshed with champagne and fruit juice. Add this to dining in its triple AA Rosette restaurant, The Orangery, for a truly indulgent day.

what we do Best

AIC International Colour Conference

NewcastleGateshead is well known as a place of innovation. You may already know that the steam train and the lightbulb were invented here – and that inventive spirit continues to this day, especially within our world-renowned strengths in life sciences, healthcare and sustainability. We have a heritage in the offshore and marine industry and continue to drive innovation in this sector to this day, and our creative and digital sector is fast-growing, with start-ups and world leaders calling NewcastleGateshead home.

The varied social programme included a welcome drinks reception at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, while the official opening reception took place at the Hatton Gallery on the Newcastle University campus, and included a private view of an exhibition of colour artworks by international artists. The conference also featured a special performance from the Royal Northern Sinfonia, orchestra of Sage Gateshead, which was enhanced by live computer visuals generated in real time, transforming sound into light.

NewcastleGateshead has all the attributes to make it the natural home for a wide range of events. We’ve played host to high-profile conferences, including spring events for England’s three major political parties and the National Union of Students’ (NUS) annual conference, as well as countless other corporate and association events.

Delegates explored the wider region with excursions to Durham Cathedral, the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition and a locally sourced banquet held at Northumberland’s Alnwick Garden complete with traditional Northumbrian music.

some of the events we’ve hosted • Human-Computer Interaction International Conference • GameHorizon Conference • Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting • Liberal Democrats Spring Conference

• National Union of Journalists Delegate Meeting • NOF Energy Annual Conference • European Conference on Networks and Optical Communications

Prof. Anya Hurlbert, AIC 2013 organising committee

The conference programme looked at the technical and scientific areas of colour production and reproduction, the human response to colour and the ways in which colour can be used sustainably. It provided a forum for researchers, academics, artists, architects, industrialists, engineers, designers, lighting experts and business leaders to share ideas, interact and learn of advances in the field.

Our leading professionals and academics from across the destination work closely with the Convention Bureau as ‘Conference Ambassadors’ to help bring conferences in their own area of expertise to NewcastleGateshead. Combining their invaluable knowledge with our spectacular setting, top-notch venues and brilliant support services, helps us create memorable and successful events time after time.

• International Symposium on Environment-Friendly Energies and Applications

NEWCASTLEGATESHEAD

Sage Gateshead is an iconic building filled with light and colour, reflected from its own architecture and the surrounding riverscape – perfect for an international conference on colour.

NewcastleGateshead welcomed 600 delegates from 33 countries when the Association Internationale de la Couleur (AIC) hosted its 12th International Colour Conference – Bringing Colour to Life – at Sage Gateshead. NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau won the bid to bring the conference to the destination in partnership with local ‘Conference Ambassador’, Professor Anya Hurlbert, Director of the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University. Newcastlebased Benchmark Conference & Events managed the event.

Thanks to two top universities based right in the city centre, we’re not short of academic expertise, leading the way in ground-breaking research in specialist fields including healthy ageing, biomedicine, engineering and technology. We’re also home to 50,000 university students – a talent pool for our businesses to grow with.

• European Academy of Childhood Disability Conference

The NewcastleGateshead Quayside has formed the perfect home for Thinking Digital. We have been very fortunate to have access to a wide range of high-quality venues at multiple price points to allow us to adapt to the differing needs of the conference every year. In addition, we’ve been blessed with highly professional staff at the venues which makes a critical difference in attempting to take a conference from merely good to thoroughly great.

Herb Kim, founder of Thinking Digital

thinking digital Thinking Digital is an annual NewcastleGateshead-based conference that focuses on technology, digital media, mobile, media, sciences, start-ups and the arts. The event has attracted a host of impressive speakers from Google, Facebook, BBC, YouTube and Microsoft, along with leading academics from universities including MIT, as well as Newcastle and Northumbria universities. More than 20 nations have been represented at the conference, which brings together an international community of innovators who want to understand the technologies and ideas that will be shaping our future. Sage Gateshead, a world-class performance venue on the banks of the River Tyne, provides the iconic Quayside setting for Thinking Digital. The event takes place in Hall Two and the Northern Rock Foundation Hall as well as drawing a significant online audience – bringing the total audience each year to 1,000. In addition to the main conference, Thinking Digital’s social programme makes ample use of Quayside restaurants including Six at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gusto, Piccolino and La Tasca to entertain delegates during the conference.

Exclusive evening hire of Beamish allows event organisers to treat their delegates to a magical evening in a fabulous setting. Imagine a drinks reception, splendid buffet and entertainment in the Edwardian Town or an evening visit to The Pit Village, to enjoy delicious fish and chips cooked on a coal fired range in real beef dripping, with traditional games, pastimes and music.

Hi-Lights is not just an AV hire company but a production company that has the technical ability, experience and equipment to produce a diverse range of events – indoor and outdoor, big or small. The fireworks pictured, are the finale of the NewcastleGateshead Winter Carnival, which makes its way through the streets of Newcastle before a spectacular show of light and sound. Hi-Lights provided the power, staging, audio and lighting systems for this fantastic event. The fashion show demonstrates the technical lighting ability of Hi-Lights, ensuring that the whole catwalk and models were correctly lit. It was done in such a way that there was no ‘overspill’ onto the audience.

Hi-Lights were proud to be the AV company responsible for the AGM and 10th Anniversary of NewcastleGateshead Initiative. Creative lighting on a backdrop with rear projection for video and a flown sound system were all installed for this event. Car launches are popular events and the anticipation and excitement at such an event are important to its success. Hi-Lights added lighting, effects and music, adding to the drama of a new car reveal. The trussing shown above was built by Hi-Lights at Trafalgar Square as part of the Lord Mayor’s Festival. Artistes performed magnificent theatre, high in the air, thrilling the audience.

What is your largest venue? Sage Gateshead is NewcastleGateshead’s largest meetings venue and it has played host to some of the largest conferences and events in the region over the past few years. With capacity for up to 1,700 delegates in its majestic Hall One, it has hosted spring events for England’s three major political parties, as well as other high-profile events including the National Union of Students’ (NUS) Conference.

How many bedrooms are there in NewcastleGateshead? Currently there are around 6,000 bedrooms in NewcastleGateshead, ranging from luxury hotels and apartments to budget accommodation and university halls of residence. Our ‘twin cities’ have undergone a massive redevelopment over the last 10 years, and this is still ongoing.

Located in North East England, Newcastle (on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (on the south bank) are joined by seven bridges and have been transformed into a single cultural and vibrant destination: NewcastleGateshead. On the Quayside, it takes about one minute to walk across the river via either the historic Swing Bridge, or the stunning Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Does NewcastleGateshead have an airport? Yes. NewcastleGateshead has all the access links you’d expect from a major European city including its own international airport. Newcastle International Airport is just over 20 minutes from the city centre by Metro, and has direct flights to Dubai, Amsterdam, London and Paris amongst 80 destinations worldwide.

How long does it take to get to NewcastleGateshead from London? NewcastleGateshead is easily accessible by air, rail, road and sea. It has excellent connections from most major cities in the UK, with London being less than three hours away by rail, and 1 hour 10 minutes by air.

How safe is NewcastleGateshead? NewcastleGateshead is a safe city to visit and visitors usually receive a warm welcome. As in all major European cities, however, it is recommended that you take the usual precautions to protect yourself and your personal belongings. When in the region, in the case of severe emergencies, dial 999 for police, fire, or ambulance, and for any other incidents, theft or assault, go to the nearest police station or contact Northumbria Police on 101.

What is the population? NewcastleGateshead enjoys a wide diversity of ethnic groups and cultures with over 450,000 people living in our twin cities, and over 1 million people living in and around the region.

What is the weather like? NewcastleGateshead is one of the driest cities in the UK. Average temperatures range from 12 to 19 degrees Celsius in the summer, 2 to 15 degrees Celsius in the spring and autumn, and from 1 to 7 degrees Celsius in the winter.

Is there a smoking ban in place? On 1 July 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smoke free. Offices, restaurants, pubs, public transport, hotels, membership clubs and shopping malls are covered by the smoke free legislation.

What is the dialing code for international telephone calls to the UK? The code to telephone the UK from outside the country is +44. If calling overseas from within the UK, you usually need to dial 00 followed by the country code.
