Welcome to
Juice!
Autumn half term in NewcastleGateshead is all about celebrating the creativity of children and young people as Juice Festival – produced by NewcastleGateshead Initiative – welcomes families from across the country to enjoy ten days of inspiring events and experiences. New for 2014, award-winning author David Almond is artistic advisor to Juice and has played a key role in shaping this year’s festival. To celebrate, we’ve brought together a series of special events inspired by some of his most popular books – see pages 4-6. We’re delighted that Port of Tyne is once again headline sponsor of Juice, as part of its commitment to enhancing opportunities for young people. They are getting behind Team Juice, our dedicated young assistants who have helped influence and develop how Juice is run and will be out and about throughout the festival. Find out more about Team Juice on pages 24-25. The success of Juice Festival is down to our fantastic partners

@JuiceFestival
Welcome to JUIC E 2014. Young people are na tu ral artists. They play, sing, da nce, talk, draw, pa int, act, read, write, inquir e, worry, yearn an d dream. As they grow, they recreate the world and help to make it a bette r place. Don’t belie ve the groaning pessim ists who say that kids today are disengaged. This wonderfully optim istic festival shows that youn g people are activ e and creative citizens, and that their artistic lives are at the beating heart of ou r culture. We’re fo rtunate to have such a festi val here on Tynesid e. Come along to it. Take pa rt in it. Be enterta ined, delighted and ins pired. David Almond, Ar tistic Advisor
- over 30 regional, national and international cultural organisations and venues working together to make the festival a fun, inspiring and memorable experience for all involved. We also nurture fresh young talent through projects designed to develop skills and by providing platforms to showcase art created by young people. Plus, five partner schools have been getting creative with Juice projects in the run up to half term. Find out more about Juice and how you can get involved on pages 24-25. We hope you’ll enjoy this year’s festival and have fun exploring new art forms and visiting new venues. To help you plan, you’ll find a pull-out event timetable on pages 14-15, with free events highlighted on the reverse. You’ll also find lots more inspiration online at juicefestival.co.uk and juiceblog.com, which has been written by our young journalists team. We can’t wait to welcome you to Juice Festival 2014 – see you there!

Three orphaned teenagers run away from their children’s home and sail down the River Tyne on a makeshift raft. Stuck on the mudflats, they meet a strange girl who lives with an old man, Grampa. The girl has a secret only Grampa knows... and he’s not telling.
Based on the novel by internationally renowned children’s author and Juice Artistic Advisor David Almond, Heaven Eyes is a poetic but gritty story about young people trying to find their way in the world. Mysterious, heart-breaking and humorous in equal measure, the story will touch the depth of your soul.
