Welcome to Juice! Autumn half term in NewcastleGateshead is all about celebrating the creativity of children and young people. Juice Festival – which is produced by NewcastleGateshead Initiative – welcomes families from across the country to enjoy ten days of inspiring events and experiences. This year we’re delighted to welcome the Port of Tyne on board as headline sponsor of Juice 2013 and we hope you’ll all take part in capturing Juice as part of their Reflect photo and film competition.

Carol Bell, Head of Culture and Major Events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative

This year’s festival takes place from Friday 25 October – Sunday 3 November and we are now six years old! Juice Festival 2013 showcases 35 projects, all of which celebrate the creativity of children and young people and the festival offers a wide range of innovative ways for children, young people and their families to engage in the arts. We’ve dreamt up a wonderful programme for you and you’ll see some of the events have been creatively inspired by the dreams and aspirations of children and young people. The success of Juice Festival is down to our fantastic partners. We work in partnership with over 30 regional and national cultural organisations and venues to make the festival happen. We are also very proud to be working in partnership with five local schools that started their two-year journey with us this year. Our new national partners for 2013 include Manchester International Festival, Battersea Arts Centre, Walker Books and award-winning children’s theatre company Oily Cart. Our new regional partnerships for 2013 include November Club, Theatre Royal, Changemakers, Five Ring Circus, Digital Voices and TakeOff Festival.

Don’t forget your camera! Reflect, the Port of Tyne’s photo & film competition is open now and there are some great prizes, including a special award for entrants aged 16 or under. All you have to do is capture the North East as you see it, in film or photo. You can use your camera, your mobile phone or a video camera and with so much happening throughout Juice Festival it’s the perfect time to get snapping and filming! For more information on how to enter, visit www.portoftyne.co.uk/reflect

We are so excited to bring you a programme that is jam packed full of exciting events, exhibitions, performances and workshops. We hope that you’ll join us, and the hundreds of children and young people who have been working on Juice, in bringing the 2013 festival to life. Claire Newton, Juice Festival Manager @JuiceFestival 03

Sat 26 Oct 6pm (Entry to Seven Stories from 5.30pm) Polarbear makes things up; stories, jokes, adventures – a master maker-upper. But where did it all begin? Mouth Open, Story Jump Out is about the moment that started it all, and how one little decision set off a chain reaction that changed his life forever. International assassins, secret codes, dog eating boa constrictors and much more fill the hole left when a father disappears and a boy discovers a talent for telling tales. JUICE FESTIVAl PROGRAMME

More about Juice Festival... Juice Festival presents inspiring events created by, for and with children and young people. We’re busy the whole year round working with children and young people, festival partners and artists to bring you our 10-day festival. Juice Festival is a commissioner

Young Evaluators

This year the festival is immensely proud to be a commissioning partner for ZigZag ZigZag, a brand-new piece of children’s storytelling devised and directed by Belgian director Inne Gorris, which premiered as part of Manchester International Festival in July. ZigZag ZigZag will make its regional premiere in Hilton Primary Academy School, Newcastle this October.

In partnership with Bridge North East and TakeOff Festival we have recruited ten young people to evaluate the festival and report back to us on our programme. The results of this project will be made available at www.juicefestival.co.uk in January 2014. look out for the team across the festival and don’t forget to tell them what you think of Juice!

Juice Cuckoo Review

NORTH

Our partnership with New Writing North has seen us recruit ten young people to preview and review festival events. You can see their work on our blog www.juicefestivalblog.com

NORTH young performance company has worked in partnership with us and the libraries service to bring an extra special element to this year’s Big Juice Read. NORTH also planned our launch event this year.

What’s next?

Partner Schools 2013 marks the first year of our two-year partnership with five local schools. We are working with lord lawson of Beamish Academy, Thomas Bewick School, Cedars Academy, Hilton Primary Academy and Walkergate Primary School this year to bring elements of the festival programme into school settings, involve students and teachers in projects and to engage more children and young people than ever before! 24

It doesn't stop here, we are also planning projects into 2014 and beyond and have already started talking to our current partners and some new partners about exciting collaborations. We’re proud to be working with members of the Young Artist Collective from Skimstone Arts who are busy working on tracks for an album to be launched as part of Juice 2014 – you can preview some live tracks on www.juicefestival.co.uk. We'll also be working with the fabulous author David Almond on something very special next year so watch this space for updates.
