New Year’s Eve
INTER CARNIVAL Wild Beasts and Dark Streets: a Parade of Monstrous Beasties brings a Wild Rumpus to the streets of Newcastle on New Year’s Eve. Newcastle’s Winter Carnival Parade returns to ring in the New Year in style – with scary monsters, a cauldron of fire, and dancing bears with giant claws stalking the streets of Newcastle… to frighten parents and delight children of all ages. In many parts of Europe, wild beasts emerge on New Year’s Eve to scare away any bad spirits and prepare us for the New Year. Gather at Monument to see how many Beasts appear… feel the heat as the fiery torchbearers lead the spectacular procession down Northumberland Street, accompanied by drummers and dancers, and watch flames flicker around Newcastle Civic Centre as fireworks fill the skies with noisy colour from 6pm, set to a monster soundtrack.
Approximate timings: From 5pm – music and carnival performance in the streets around Monument. 5.15pm – parade leaves for Newcastle Civic Centre via Northumberland Street. 6pm – Fireworks finale at Newcastle Civic Centre Metro will be running a weekday service on New Year’s Eve until 8pm. Then it will be a 15 minute service in the central area with trains every 30 minutes to South Shields, Airport, South Hylton and the North Tyneside coastal loop. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and use the Journey Planner at nexus.org.uk/travel-information. hare your experience of this year’s Winter S Festival carnival by using #NYEcarnival
