Whatever you choose to come and see or do, everyone involved looks forward to giving you a special Juice Festival welcome this autumn half term. Enjoy!

Young Ranters – Them and Us Fri 2 Nov - Sun 4 Nov
As part of BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking Festival young people respond to the theme, Them and Us, in pop-up events at The Sage Gateshead.
In July, a team from Northern Stage toured the North East in a vintage double-decker bus collecting stories while following the route of the 2012 Olympic Torch relay. Young performers, dancers and singers from Hexham, Durham and Tyneside take these stories and transform them into an honest, charming and fun look at the world, at this moment in our country’s history. The evening will include short performances by each of the groups, plus a screening of a new film by Northern Stars. www.northernstage.co.uk
Every family dinner needs a hero... Relating to your relations isn’t always easy, and it’s often on those rare occasions when everyone sits down to eat together that things really kick off. Simon Mole’s one-man show is a sensory explosion that combines spoken word theatre, riotous adventure, laughs a-plenty and tasty culinary delights.
Visit bbc.co.uk/freethinking to find out how you can catch what’s going on and join in the bigger Free Thinking debate. ‘Them and Us’ – what does this mean to you?
Working with a group of teenage writers from New Writing North, Simon and director Peader Kirk take spoken word performance in an exciting new direction. The writers will serve food with poetic memories and perform their own original family-themed writing as they host and welcome the audience to this special event. Written, performed and presented by Simon Mole in association with Apples and Snakes, New Writing North, Live Theatre and Juice Festival. We only left the dragon eggs alone for a moment – honest! Now they’ve gone and hatched and dragons are running around the city causing chaos!

Children – we need you! Help us find and train the baby dragons, and deliver them safely back to their dragon family. Watch them sail away down the river as dusk falls. Make a dragon, get dressed up and celebrate the end of the festival in style, with live music from young musicians from The Sage Gateshead. With thanks to River Escapes.

JUICE FESTIVAL PROGRAMME
Juice Festival presents inspiring events created by, for and with children and young people. Behind the scenes there are also lots of other ways in which young people get involved, both in the months leading up to Juice and during the 10 day festival itself:
Arts Award “The children involved in our project were blown away by the scale of the event they had helped create. I don’t think they’d been able to imagine how big it would be in advance.” Teacher, 2011 festival
Behind the Scenes at Juice Press Gang This year we have worked with 28 young people aged 15-24 in Press Gang, a project delivered with New Writing North. The group have taken part in reviewing master classes, with journalists from regional and national media. They have written articles about Juice Festival events for The Journal’s Culture Magazine and for blogs and websites and will be reviewing events throughout the festival.
“I have really enjoyed writing articles for The Journal. To be given the opportunity to work with and receive feedback from professional journalists is so special. My confidence in my writing has improved loads and I’m really keen to keep writing and have even started some creative writing now too.” Terri-Leigh Riley, age 17
Volunteers Over 50 young people are involved in event management and front of house roles at events across the festival – look out for them in their distinctive blue Juice Festival t-shirts and say hello.
Behind the Scenes for Teens New to this year’s festival we are also working with a small group of schools and festival partners to offer a ‘behind the scenes’ experience, with backstage tours and staff interviews to help guide young people on career paths into the arts and cultural sector.
Young people are achieving Arts Award through their involvement in Juice and the whole festival is packed full of opportunities that young people can put towards Arts Award. Juice Festival is an Arts Award Supporter.
Schools workshops Several hundred children and young people from schools and colleges are involved in projects that feed directly into the Juice Festival programme; all working with artists to create work that has a professional platform within the festival.
Dragon Game Development Newcastle City Learning Centre is working with a group of young people aged 14 and 15yrs to create a digital game for children aged 6yrs+, inspired by the dragons that are running loose across the festival. © Cressida Cowell
Northern Stars Documentary Northern Stars young film makers are making a series of short ‘episodes’ documenting six projects in the lead up to Juice. Watch the films at www.facebook.com/JuiceFestival.NG from October. www.tynesidecinema.co.uk/ www.madebynorthernstars.com/academy

“Volunteering for Juice Festival was an amazing experience! Not only did I get to make loads of contacts in the industry but I also got to work in some of the city’s best cultural venues. I would do it again in a heartbeat”. Alex Prentice, Volunteer 2011
