SPOON THEORY / RAT BOY
DOUBLE BILL
‘What a flipping brilliant night of theatre.’ Double Bill Audience Feedback 2017
Spoon Theory written by Rebekah Bowsher
Rat Boy written by Christina Dawson & Lee Mattinson
When it starts, you don’t realise it’s started. In a flash of ink you are transformed. It happens that fast. Belle is newly married. Planning a honeymoon. A life. A future. She knows nothing of spoons.
When a 13 year old lad goes AWOL in the rat run of Byker Wall, Gash and Jam are the only ones with any hope of finding him. Each and every breadcrumb’s laced with synthetic freedom. Because it’s 1995 and, even if Rat Boy’s mates had mobiles, they’d be as big as the bricks their Byker is built upon.
And then she is hit by a car. And the spoons are dictating her life. The spoons tell her what she can do, and what she can’t. But, how can she put her life back together when her spoons keep disappearing?

FLEABAG Presented by DryWrite & Soho Theatre Written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge Directed by Vicky Jones Starring Maddie Rice
‘Finely polished and filthy as ever’ Following the BAFTA award-winning BBC series, the acclaimed stage production of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cult hit returns to Live Theatre. Fleabag may seem over-sexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig themed café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Stumbling through a maze of social anxiety, disastrous job interviews and meaningless sex, Fleabag serves up an uproariously funny and true account of some sort of a female living her sort of life.

British Theatre Guide
‘ Subtle, sensitive and deeply moving, and a worthy successor to Open Clasp’s phenomenally successful Key Change.’ A story with no ending; a chance meeting with one man changes the lives of two women forever. Now they both live trying to predict the unpredictable. Spine tingling and visceral, Rattle Snake will literally take your breath away. An epic tale based on real life stories of women who have faced and survived coercive controlling domestic abuse. Continuing their long association with Live Theatre, this mesmerising and emotional tour-de force follows Open Clasp’s hugely successful Key Change, which premiered at Live Theatre before winning the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award in 2015 and transferring to off-Broadway, featuring as a New York Times Critics Pick in 2016. Rattle Snake was created by Open Clasp and funded by Durham PCC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), to train front-line officers in better responding to sexual and domestic violence — coinciding with the change of law making coercive control in relationships a crime in 2015.

MIA: DAUGHTERS OF FORTUNE A Mind the Gap Production Devised and Directed by Joyce Nga Yu Lee
‘ an emotional rollercoaster with every scene as the cast ask us to do a reality check on what we take for granted’
Having kids is not an easy decision: Can I afford it? Have I got enough room? Will I screw it up? Now imagine making these decisions if you have a learning disability. Woah — wait a minute… learning-disabled parents? Erm, can they do that? Do they even have sex? Yes, yes ‘they’ do. Fast moving, raw and eye-opening, Mia explores the truths and myths about learning disability and parenthood in today’s society. Think pop culture with popcorn, science with silliness, stories with statistics. Mia challenges the often taken for granted idea of ‘being a parent’.
