Carnegie Medal-winning author David Almond adapts his critically acclaimed short story The Savage for the stage. “What you writing Blue?” Following the death of his dad and to escape the unwanted attentions of the neighbourhood bully Hopper, Blue throws himself into writing. In his imagination, he conjures up a “truely wild” character – one full of anger and thoughts of revenge. Helped by his friend Elaine, his mum and baby sister Jess, his creation takes on a life of its own, blurring the line between fact and fiction… The Savage is a family friendly play with music, movement and eye-catching visuals that will appeal to both young people and adults alike. Commissioned to coincide with the launch of the Live Tales writing centre (see page 28 for more information) it is an uplifting contemporary fable about creation and renewal, wildness and civilisation, showing the importance of creativity in making us whole. Harriet Martineau Dreams of Dancing

PREVIEWS: Thurs 10 Nov, 7.30pm, Fri 11 Nov, 7.30pm, Sat 12 Nov, 2pm & 7.30pm

“I often dream that I’m dancing. Over the waves. A cross between dancing and flying. And then I wake up and I’m bed bound, earth bound and wearing a corset.” Tynemouth, 1844. Harriet Martineau, leading radical thinker, feminist and anti-slavery campaigner of her day, seeks refuge from the claustrophobic demands of London society, with her needlepoint and a telescope in an attic room on Front Street. But instead of escape, she finds an unequal world in need of her attention. This is a world of racial intolerance and gender imbalance, of eccentric scientific practices such as mesmerism and phrenology. A world where a negligent husband may die from a pig falling on his head in the street. On her comic journey to combat injustice, Harriet also learns some home truths about herself along the way. Following on from the critically acclaimed 2010 production of A Northern Odyssey (««««« The Guardian), Harriet Martineau Dreams of Dancing is the second in Shelagh Stephenson’s trilogy of plays at Live Theatre exploring the contemporary relevance of Tyneside’s political and cultural heritage. Max Roberts, Artistic Director, Live Theatre said: “I am delighted to welcome Shelagh Stephenson back to Live Theatre and thrilled that she has created the another play set in and around Tynemouth where she grew up. Harriet Martineau Dreams of Dancing is a superbly witty and engaging story underpinned with a sharply focused feminist tract. As with A Northern Odyssey the production will include music and dance inspired by the traditions of Northumberland.” To book online visit www.live.org.uk 15

The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes

LOCATION: Studio Theatre DURATION: Approx 1hr 10mins SUITABILITY: 14+

A Live Theatre Production: World Premiere Written by Nina Berry Co-directed by Max Roberts and Graeme Thompson Designed by Luke Robson Original Music by Anguaji Music Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? How the water vapour keeps on condensing and where the snowflake falls is what determines the way the snowflake looks when it lands on your coat sleeve. The way they can arrange themselves is almost infinite. So, you know, nobody can say for absolute certain but the likelihood of two snowflakes being identical is next to impossible.

PERFORMANCES: Tues to Sun PREVIEW: Thurs 8 Dec FRIENDS 241: Thurs 8 Dec, 8pm & Sat 10 Dec, 2pm MATINEES: Sat 10 Dec, 2pm, Thurs 15 Dec, 2pm & Sat 17 Dec, 2pm TICKETS: £10, £8 concs

Rosie and Charlie are two people in many places. From youth to old age, from Trafalgar Square to Chillingham Road, The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes takes a touching look at what it means to grow up, fall in love and how the tiniest, most seemingly insignificant detail can change eternity. Or then again maybe not. A play about fate, friendship and snowflakes. Nina Berry is currently a Live Lab Associate artist and her previous short play Words with Love was part of Rendezvous (2015). She is a graduate of Live Theatre’s Introduction to Playwriting Course and Live Writers Group. “One of the best young writers working in the region” British Theatre Guide SATURDAY 10 DECEMBER (after the 2pm show)

Max Roberts, Artistic Director, Live Theatre said: “As well as working with established writers David Almond and Shelagh Stephenson this season, I am also looking forward to co-directing The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes, the first full length play by Nina Berry, an emerging writer from Newcastle with real talent. Her writing is distinctive, witty and contemporary and her play will provide a delightful alternative Christmas entertainment” To book online visit www.live.org.uk 17

The 56 Presented by LUNG Theatre Written by Matt Woodhead & Gemma Wilson Directed by Matt Woodhead ‘Nobody dies in football matches in fires. Within four minutes, the wooden structure was ablaze. Adapted solely from over sixty real-life testimonies, this bold and pertinent piece of documentary theatre pays homage to the supporters who lost their lives in one of the darkest days in British footballing history. Spine

The Lamppost Petition

Presented by Soho Theatre & Francesca Moody Written by Clara Brennan

Written by Zoe Murtagh

From fast-rising Channel 4 playwright Clara Brennan, comes the Fringe First and Herald Angel award-winning Edinburgh Fringe sellout show, Spine, a hilarious and heartbreaking call to arms for our modern age. Spine charts the explosive friendship between a ferocious, wise-cracking teenager and an elderly East End widow. Mischievous activist pensioner Glenda is hell-bent on leaving a political legacy and saving Amy from the Tory scrapheap. In this era of damaging cuts and disillusionment, has politics forgotten people? Can we really take the power back? Amy is forced to find out. The exciting 15 minute short of Spine was originally shown at Live Theatre as part of Theatre Uncut in 2013.

The Lamppost Petition is a piece about grandparents and what it means to get older. It’s about the things you never said. It’s about the questions you always wanted to ask. It’s the photograph you carry round in your purse and the sound of that song that tastes like apple pie. Jess and Joe Forever

Key Change

Presented by Farnham Maltings Written by Zoe Cooper Directed by Derek Bond

An Open Clasp production Written by Catrina McHugh Directed by Laura Lindow

Meet Jess and Joe. They want to tell you their story. Joe is Norfolk born and bred and wears wellies. Jess holidays there with her au pair and is slightly too tubby for her summer dresses.

Devised with women in HMP Low Newton to tour to male prisons, critically-acclaimed Key Change carries their voices over the razor wire in a raw, illuminating and very funny portrayal of women in prison.

Spanning several summer holidays, Jess and Joe Forever is an unusual coming of age tale exploring rural life and what it means to belong somewhere, if you can really belong anywhere. It is a layered and thoughtful play about finding your place in the world when you only know a small part of it.

Key Change premiered at Live Theatre in 2014 before a successful run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015 winning The Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award 2015, to having its New York Premiere in 2016 receive the prestigious New York Times Critics Pick.

Well, I have just received an e-mail to say that it has made the top 5% and will be progressed to a full reading.
