#BACK TO LIVE

We’re delighted to be able to open our doors again and welcome you back into our theatre for live performances from 2 September. The last year has been a tough time for everyone. Although our building has been closed we have continued to create new stories and work with artists and young people. We have found new ways to do things and new ways to reach audiences. But being able to open our doors is a truly emotional moment. Because Live Theatre is so much more than just a building. It’s a place where people share stories that matter to them and connect with one another. Every performance we offer you will have full safety measures in place, so you can enjoy the thrill of a live interaction with total confidence. Our artists and audiences are everything to us, and so we pledge to always give you the very best and safest live experience. It’s people that make this theatre what it is, and that is why it is so important to be able to welcome you Back to Live. We open with an exclusive season of Live Theatre productions. Kema Sikazwe’s groundbreaking debut play Shine returns in a brand new and updated version. Your Voice: North East is seven short plays by writers and artists new to Live Theatre that reflect the contemporary life in our region. Braids + Cheer Up Slug is a double bill of debut plays about young female experience in the North East written by Live Associate Artists Olivia Hannah and Tamsin Daisy Rees.

Lewis Jobson returns to entertain us once again in Redcoat. Then in November, we’re proud to bring you a brand-new adaptation of Benjamin Myers’ best-selling book The Offing, by award winning playwright Janice Okoh. We round 2021 off with the muchanticipated return of the sell-out hit Bonnie & Fanny’s Christmas Spectacular. Updated and with added glitter for the perfect Christmas night out! Although excited about returning, we understand that some of our guests may be concerned about venturing into theatres and public spaces after the pandemic, but please be assured we will be following all Government guidance and taking all necessary precautions to keep our audiences and theatre community safe. If you have any concerns or queries please contact us. We’re also pleased to let you know that during closure we have made some improvements to the theatre’s heating and ventilation system, access and visibility. This will ensure that you can expect to enjoy a much more comfortable experience and atmosphere. Finally, we must thank all of our supporters, funders and individual donors whose generosity and kindness has enabled us to reopen our doors with a packed and exciting programme. Here’s to getting Back to Live!

It’s not easy. It starts with a story of new surroundings, about making a new life, and then watching that life fall apart. About growing up in a world that doesn’t always accept you, but gaining self-belief, trusting your head, your heart and always chasing your dreams. Actor, rapper, singer, rising star and Live Theatre Associate Artist, Kema Sikazwe (I, Daniel Blake), performs a new version of this bittersweet coming of age story with an electrifying live soundtrack and heartfelt words.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

GET INVOLVED

Live Theatre is the home of new plays in the North East.

We are dedicated to increasing opportunity for early career artists as well as discovering and celebrating writers from this region. Each year we work with hundreds of artists through our free and open access talent development programme. Many of the plays you see on our stages began life in a workshop or one of our rehearsal spaces.

Supporting new talent is central to what we do at Live Theatre. When you buy a ticket to see our shows you are not only supporting those plays and those artists, you are also helping create the shows of the future and providing ongoing opportunities for the next generation of North East talent.

Meet Lewis. He’s a Redcoat. He’s living the dream and living it large in Bognor Regis. He likes to smile and show you a good time. But what happens when you’re having an ‘off day’? And you tell Barney the Dinosaur to p*ss off (in front of a load of kids)? Featuring banging tunes, dance routines, balloon modelling and that extra special bit of Redcoat sparkle. Redcoat is an honest and human show that’s loosely inspired by Lewis’ experience as a Redcoat. First performed as a work-in-progress show as part of Live Theatre’s Elevator Festival (in Mar 2020), Redcoat returns for its larger than life UK premiere.

THE OFFING A

LIVE THEATRE co-production with STEPHEN JOSEPH THEATRE

Adapted from the novel by BENJAMIN MYERS by JANICE OKOH with additional material by PAUL ROBINSON Directed by PAUL ROBINSON ‘That distant stretch of sea where sky and water merge. It’s called the offing.’

In a Britain slowly emerging from the horrors of the Second World War, 16-year-old Robert Appleyard sets out on an adventure - he leaves his Durham home to head South, where he hopes to find work.

12

But he never gets there. On the clifftops at Robin Hood’s Bay, a chance encounter with the bohemian and eccentric Dulcie Piper will change his path forever.

Dulcie’s world is a far cry from the one Robert left behind. She opens the door to the joys of art and literature, of good food and wine. But is this coastal bohemian escape as idyllic as it seems, and can Robert help her lay to rest the ghost that haunts her past? Paul Robinson directs this unforgettable story which captured the hearts and minds of many

VOLUNTEER

LIVE TALES

Live Theatre’s volunteers are an incredible group of people who give a wealth of energy and enthusiasm to the work of the theatre.

Fun filled Live Tales workshops at our Newcastle and Sunderland studios unlock the incredible imagination of pupils, enabling them to embrace their creativity, craft original stories and explore playwriting. Even the most reluctant of writers will be inspired!

Volunteer roles are varied and available in Live Tales, our children and young people’s writing centres, and in other areas of Live Theatre’s work. They include supporting and encouraging children and young people to write, illustrating their stories, or leading tours of our buildings.

STORY & PLAYWRITING WORKSHOPS FOR KS2 & KS3

In the KS2 session the class create a brand new illustrated story that they can take home with them, while the KS3 session introduces script writing and helps the class start an original play. Our NEW online workshop for KS2, Live Tales Play Makers, explores plays and scripts through games designed around character, storytelling and dialogue.
