Welcome to our June to December 2017 season
I’m delighted our new co-production, No Dogs, No Indians, extends Live Theatre’s involvement in GemArts Masala Festival in July, and that the Mini Mela returns to Live Garden after its success last year. Live’s Youth Theatre take over the whole building and garden in August for a three day festival of imaginative performances on the theme of Heroes, Villains and Mortals. We continue our long relationship with Open Clasp to present Rattle Snake, premiering here in September before transferring to York Theatre Royal and Soho Theatre, London. We are also delighted to be co-producing the world premiere of Goth Weekend with Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. From the Sky to Your Hands, in which Joana Geronimo, a former member of Live’s Youth Theatre tells of her experiences arriving in Newcastle as a refugee, is our contribution to the city-wide Martin Luther King Festival. We are delighted to bring back Nina Berry’s stunning debut play, The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes, in November after its sell out success and critical acclaim last year. Our work is also on tour nationally. Our hit production of The Red Lion, written by Patrick Marber transfers to Trafalgar Studios, London. After its Olivier Award success Lee Hall’s Our Ladies, originally produced by Live Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland, continues its West End run at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London until early September presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, and Mobile, a digital and intimate show in a caravan produced with The Paper Birds and originally commissioned by Live Theatre, tours nationally. From September Live Tales, our story writing centre will offer three creative writing sessions a week for KS2 classes. We will also be part of an exciting participatory project, to launch the Fire Station in Sunderland’s Music Arts and Cultural Quarter in November. Rattle Snake is an epic tale, based on real life stories of women who have faced and survived coercive controlling domestic abuse. Continuing a long association between Live Theatre and Open Clasp, this sharp, moving and unflinching new play is from the company behind the hugely successful Key Change which premiered at Live Theatre before winning The Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award in 2015 and featuring as a New York Times Critics’ Pick in 2016. Coinciding with the change in UK law in 2015 making coercive control in relationships a crime, Rattle Snake was originally commissioned by Durham University and Durham Constabulary and funded by Durham PCC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and is used in the training of frontline police officers.

“You can’t be a Goth, Dad. Your name is Kenneth.” Ella wants her recently bereaved dad Ken to get out more. To meet people. To start dating again. Then Belinda comes along. She’s a newly single singer in Belle Epoque, a Geordie Goth band, with her disgruntled teenage son Simon (a.k.a. “Bram”) on keyboards. She’s a disaster. For Ella. Ken has had his head turned and his wardrobe will never be the same again. Worse for Ella, Belinda and Bram, arriving in a customised purple hearse, move in to rehearse for a gig at Goth Weekend in Whitby. In this hilarious and poignant comedy with music, Ella has to wrestle with her own dilemmas, decide whether to sabotage plans for the band, and Ken and Belinda’s Goth happiness… Goth Weekend features Jessica Johnson, most recently seen in Key Change, and Live Theatre debuts by actors Sean McKenzie, Amy Trigg and Gurjeet Singh.

THE TERMINAL VELOCITY OF SNOWFLAKES A Live Theatre Production Written by Nina Berry Directed by Graeme Thompson Designed by Luke Robson Original Music by Anguaji Music
Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? How the water vapour keeps on condensing and where the snowflake falls is what determines the way the snowflake looks when it lands on your coat sleeve. The way they can arrange themselves is almost infinite. So, you know, nobody can say for absolute certain but the likelihood of two snowflakes being identical is next to impossible. Rosie and Charlie are two people in many places. From youth to old age, from Trafalgar Square to Chillingham Road, The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes takes a touching look at what it means to grow up, fall in love and how the tiniest, most seemingly insignificant detail can change eternity. Or then again maybe not. A play about fate, friendship and snowflakes. Nina Berry’s debut play returns after a sell-out run and critical acclaim in 2016. Nina is a graduate of Live Theatre’s Introduction to Playwriting Course and Live Writers’ Group and her previous short play Words with Love was part of Rendezvous (2015).

SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS ARTS AWARD
ARTSMARK
Live Theatre’s plays, talks and workshops can support young people to achieve Arts Award. Look for events marked Arts Award in this brochure. Arts Award is a national qualification designed to grow young people as artists and arts leaders.
Live Theatre is an Artsmark venue.
Live Theatre often works in partnership with organisations such as The Prince’s Trust as well as its own Youth Theatre members to find young people who would like to gain an Arts Award.
An Artsmark award will help schools to deliver high quality arts and cultural education and provides an excellent way to demonstrate this. Any school can apply and Artsmark schools gain access to exceptional resources as well as networks of the country’s most treasured cultural organisations, helping them develop and strengthen their arts provision.
Arts Award students at Live Theatre have a 100% pass rate. To find out more about opportunities to work together to deliver Arts Award or how Live Theatre can support your journey as an Artsmark school please email education@live.org.uk
