Facts 2013
Newcastle University is ranked in the top 200 world universities by both the QS and Times Higher Education university league tables. All students rate their experience of the University very highly, ranking us 12th in the world for satisfaction levels in the latest International Student Barometer.
Pioneering research is being carried out across a range of disciplines to improve people’s lives, including reducing cancers with aspirin and new drugs, invigorating our rural communities, and developing new technologies to help older people retain their independence.
World Class
Newcastle University was founded on the principles of the civic university, applying our expertise to addressing some of society’s most profound challenges. We focus on three major issues – Ageing, Social Renewal and Sustainability – that impact not just on Newcastle, but on the UK and the world. This year an interactive Lego™ exhibition, The Great North Build – which brought town planning to life for 10,000 visitors of all ages – launched our third societal challenge theme: Social Renewal.
CivicUniversity
The University is a major investor in the region and a founding partner of Newcastle Science City. To support this, the University is hosting the British Science Festival in September 2013. The Science Central development will breathe new life into Newcastle city centre, attracting investors keen to co-locate with our researchers. Our INSIGHTS Public Lectures series is one of the largest and most distinguished in the UK. These and our LIVE Lunchtime Concerts are free and open to all, attracting over 18,000 people onto campus each year.
Regional Roots
Newcastle’s international profile continues to grow with over 220 trainee doctors studying at our Medical Campus in Malaysia and almost 500 students at our campus in Singapore. A partnership with Loyola University in the US secured the first dedicated Study Abroad Centre in the UK while our academic links with Xiamen University, China will see a new Confucius Institute opening in Newcastle in 2013. Our partnership with INTO reached a milestone with the opening of our new city-centre building – home to 800 international students.

Research Excellence Newcastle University is a member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 leading research-intensive UK universities. We have one of the largest European Union research portfolios in the UK and have research links with many other countries. We have a proven track record of meeting the most pressing societal challenges through socially relevant research. ‘World leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’ research was identified in all of our submitted subject areas by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, and we are ranked 17th in the UK for research power (according to the influential publication, Research Fortnight). The next official UK-wide research assessment is due to be published in December 2014 and preparation is well under way.
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has positioned Newcastle among its top 12 most strongly funded universities in the UK. An Impact Acceleration Account grant designed to bridge the gap between research ideas and commercial success has secured ÂŁ1.4m. Use of the cutting-edge Biomarker Generator, the first in Europe and second in the world, will make a significant difference to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other serious diseases.
Research Intensive
Our focus on Sustainability has seen us make major strides into reducing reliance on rare earth metals with the development of a novel motor for electric vehicles using steel. The geothermal borehole located on Science Central could hold the key to a sustainable way to heat the site, hitting water close to 80oC. And tackling the impacts of climate change, our scientists are more accurately measuring sea-level rises and mapping flooding hot-spots of the future.
