World Class
As a world class civic university Newcastle’s work is focused on addressing some of society’s most pressing problems. We want our research and teaching to have the maximum impact in Newcastle and the North East, the UK and the world. Our three major research areas of Ageing, Social Renewal and Sustainability are tackling profound global issues such as dementia, human trafficking and energy storage.
Our staff and students actively engage with our many stakeholders including: business, policymakers, charities and the public. Since 2012 we have worked with 540 small and medium-sized enterprises to support their growth and in the last three years 140 spin-outs and graduate businesses have been launched by the University and are still active, bringing jobs and new investment to the North East.

Newcastle University staff and students work with governments, NGOs, universities, colleges, schools and businesses worldwide to further our work and broaden our international reach.
The Neptune National Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering will be home to a world-leading centre of excellence for hyperbaric testing – the first of its kind in the UK and the first such commercial facility in the world.
Most visible are our medical campus in Malaysia and our engineering base in Singapore.
Regional Roots
In China, we are growing a strong partnership with Xiamen University which will include teaching programmes and collaborative research.
In Australia, we continue to deepen our interdisciplinary research links with Monash University while in the USA we are working in partnership with three other world class civic universities: Cornell, Indiana and Pittsburgh. A strong link with academic colleagues in Brazil has blossomed from a small research staff exchange in computing science to a university-wide programme of research and exchange.
