Newcastle University is ranked in the top 200 world universities by both the QS and Times Higher Education and is 18th in the Sunday Times/Times Good University Guide. In 2013 our research income increased to more than £150m and our research into rural economies and societies was recognised with a Queen’s Anniversary Prize.
Our employees have voted us one of the best places to work in the Times Higher Best University Workplace Survey 2014. The latest National Student Survey placed Newcastle University 10th in the UK for student satisfaction.

Queen’s Anniversary Prize for rural research
As a civic university Newcastle focuses its research on tackling society’s most profound challenges and to making a difference to people’s lives across the world. Academics addressing our societal challenge themes of Ageing, Social Renewal and Sustainability are leading research in a number of areas including water and energy supply, human trafficking, cancer treatments, and dementia.
We play a key role in the economic, social and cultural development of the North East. One example of this is our INSIGHTS Public Lectures series, one of the largest and most distinguished in the UK. These and our LIVE Lunchtime concerts are free and open to all, attracting thousands of people onto campus each year.
Civic University
£50m
investment in smart city of the future
We are investing £50 million in the heart of Newcastle creating a major new city centre science and technology site – Science Central. Here, our experts are working with industry to cost effectively decarbonise the electricity system while ensuring security of supply for customers by leading the UK’s largest £54m Smart Grid project.
The Neptune Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering, based on the North bank of the Tyne, is a major drive to develop new materials and technologies to explore the world’s oceans. The University is home to the region-wide Urban Traffic Management Centre which together with our leading experts in transport and communication systems, is building a digital infrastructure to create a more efficient and sustainable transport network.

UK University to have an overseas medical campus
This year, the first cohort of 20 medical students will graduate from the University’s medical school in Malaysia to embark on new careers in the country’s health service. We also have a Singapore campus where we offer seven degree programmes equipping over 300 students each year with skills ranging from naval architecture to food and human nutrition.
The first outcome of our Strategic Partnership with Xiamen University in NE China was the launch of a Confucius Institute in Newcastle in 2013 – representing a significant commitment on the part of both institutions to collaborate across a wide range of research, teaching and cultural activities. A partnership involving Newcastle University is supporting the training of a new generation of environmental scientists in sub-Saharan Africa.

Research Excellence Newcastle University is a member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 leading research-intensive UK universities. We have one of the largest European Union research portfolios in the UK and have research links with many other countries. We have a proven track record of meeting the most pressing societal challenges through socially relevant research. ‘World leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’ research was identified in all of our submitted subject areas by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, and we are ranked 17th in the UK for research power (according to the influential publication, Research Fortnight). The next official UK-wide research assessment is due to be published in December 2014 and preparation is well under way.

Newcastle University conducts research in Medicine, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, the Humanities and Social Sciences. In a number of subjects we are among the world’s leaders, applying our research to real-life problems. Our geographers and sociologists are working to improve the lives of women who have been trafficked.
Research
Gerontologists at Newcastle University led pioneering research that resulted in the first diagnosis and treatment of dementia with Lewy bodies. The internationally recognised clinical trial work of Newcastle University’s team of hepatologists is focused on prolonging life and improving quality of life for patients with liver disease. Research by a team of our geochemists and microbiologists led by Professors Ian Head and Steve Larter, is opening

Our civil engineering experts have shaped international guidelines and practice on cleaning up polluted minewater. We are at the forefront of the global battle against cancer, leading breakthroughs in the development of ‘smart’ drugs known as PARP inhibitors. Our scientists are developing novel IVF techniques to protect future generations from the risk of mitochondrial disease.
Biological engineers are harnessing the energy locked up in sewage to power wastewater treatment and produce valuable hydrogen gas. The ‘School in the Cloud’ vision of $1m TED prize winner Professor Sugata Mitra is enabling education across the globe as the first schools open in North East England and New Delhi, India.
