This week... Barnardos strategic recruitment worker Korryn , case managers Michaela and Sarah and Newcastle Weekly sales representative Jo Jones with the giving tree.
Giving tree proves big success A big thankyou is in order to the people of the Hunter Region who took part in this year’s Newcastle Weekly Christmas giving tree appeal. Readers were asked to give toys for boys and girls of all ages, to be donated to child protection charity Barnardos, which operates children’s family centres, permanency programs for out-of-home care, adolescent services and does advocacy work. Barnardos strategic recruitment worker Korryn said that she was over the moon with the community’s response to the initiative – a response that, once again, highlights the Hunter region’s propensity for generosity. “We are just overwhelmed with the wonderful support that we have received from the community and the Newcastle Weekly,” Korryn said. “The overall feeling of community in Newcastle and surrounds has always been very strong and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of the community and to be able to offer some great presents to our children this Christmas.”

Newcastle CDAT chariman Tony Brown is encouraged by recent federal government funding to tackle national ice problem. Photo: Jamie Wicks
Collaboration is critical hairman of the Newcastle Community Drug Action Team (CDAT), Tony Brown said that, while he was encouraged by the recent Federal Government commitment of almost $300 million, over the next four years, to tackle the scourge of crystal methamphetamine, a collaborative approach was critical in ensuring positive local outcomes. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly, Mr Brown said he was pleased with the funding
announcement which will see almost $300million go towards prevention, treatment and community engagement. “It was encouraging tor see our new Prime Minister actually listen to the experts and advocate for harm prevention and harm minimisation as an alternative narrative to the ‘arresting our way out of the problem’ approach,” he said. “I think that there has been fairly unanimous
support nationally however, the real issue is in the detail. “Newcastle is the largest regional city in the country and we have some leading Australian addiction specialists here, we have some excellent alcohol and drug treatment centers and related mental health centers. So, I think there’s some big challenges but equal opportunities and we need to work out how we can ensure that as much of that $300 million reaches local communities and the most needy first. Mr Brown revealed to Newcastle Weekly that Newcastle CDAT planned to host a summit early in the new year, inviting all key local stakeholders and the Federal Rural Health Minister to ensure local collaboration is at the top of the agenda moving forward - a strong theme coming out of Newcastle CDAT’s recent ice forum, held late last month. “We had a CDAT meeting on Monday and our preliminary thoughts are to have a summit, early next year, where we will invite the Federal Rural Health Minister, Fiona Nash, to work with us to establish some mechanisms to ensure local collaboration,” he said. “There’s a unique opportunity for Newcastle, as came out of the CDAT forum, to adopt a collaborated and coordinated response to the injection of resources. “We can’t afford to have those stakeholders who have received large financial injections try and monopolise it and build their own bureaucracies.” “It’s a complex issue, but we need local solutions for a local problem.” - Stephen Bisset
Hospital parking stress eased at the Mater The added stress of finding a car park while visiting hospital has been eased with the opening of 273 new spaces at the Calvary Mater Hospital earlier this week. Chief executive of Hunter New England Health, Michael DiRienzo said the new Reservoir car park will be used as staff parking that will, in turn, free up more spaces closer to the Mater Hospital for patients, their families and visitors. “Access to parking is an important issue for the community and we’re so pleased we have 4
been able to boost the number of car parks available so significantly,” he said. Mr DiRienzo added that the Mater Hospital was one of the busiest sites in the region, with many thousands of people working in and visiting the hospital each year. The new car park, built in the basement of an old water reservoir, would go a long way to easing parking stress at the hospital. “Work started on the project in June, and it’s fantastic to see such a great facility
finished,” he said. “The additional car spaces will make a big difference to patients, their families and visitors, alleviating the pressure of trying to find a car park.” The carpark extension brings the total number of spaces to more than 970 at the Mater hospital and its opening follows the completion of 740 new spaces at the John Haunter Hospital in August.

The magic of Christmas at Hunter Valley Gardens.
The Gardens get festive he Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular may be well and truly in full swing, but there’s still plenty of time to get into the spirit of the season with the display running until Tuesday 26 January.
With millions of festive lights on display, this year’s Spectacular promises to be the biggest and best yet with new displays including the Fairy Garden, the Music Room – featuring instruments and musical notes displays, Santa’s Plane and
Pink Unicorn promising to beguile all and sundry. Add to that the regular family favorites such as Cinderella’s Castle, Alice in Wonderland, the North Pole Scene, Twelve Days of Christmas and Candy Land as well as visits from Santa every day from 6.30pm until Christmas Eve, and you have a truly spectacular event for the whole family. Hunter Valley Gardens horticultural manager Sean O’Brien told Newcastle Weekly that they were expecting an even bigger turnout than the 123,000 that walked through the gates last year. “In the time that the Spectacular has been running, it’s really grown to become a bit of a Christmas tradition and even an institution in the Hunter Valley,” he said. “As we’re getting closer and closer to Christmas, we are seeing more and more excitement, not only from the kids but also from the parents, which is just great. The event will then be open
every night until Tuesday 26th January, 2016 (excluding Christmas). Gates will open at 6.30pm with the lights displays starting at 7.30pm. Visit huntervalleygardens.com.au - Stephen Bisset

arrington Bowling Club is set to turn heads this coming January with the release of their 2016 calendar. This is not just your everyday calendar either – members of the club have left little to the imagination by forgetting the clothes and baring all in support of raising funds for club renovations. “We first did a calendar five years ago for prostate cancer and all the chaps were talking about ways to raise funds to build the verandah and viewing deck of the sporting fields, when they said to me, ‘Why don’t we do a calendar and this time we will use the proceeds for renovations’, so that’s how it first came about,” Carrington Bowling Club CEO Jaci Lappin said. The nine brave men took to the field over three bright and early mornings as to avoid the wandering eyes of morning walkers and work commuters who have spied the scantily clad group in the past. “I was chasing them around covering them up with towels
back and forth, up and down the green, it was a very funny sight,” Jaci said. “At first they were a bit nervous, but soon enough they were getting more into it and relaxing, which meant I had to throw a lot of the photos out because there were quite a few full-frontal snaps - one of the shots made it into the calendar so we covered it with a smiley face,” she laughed. The calendar has proven to being extremely well received by the local community and quite a few outside admirers with the calendar reaching as far as Queensland and even England. “Usually, the community really loves the calendar. In fact, last time we sold them, we ended up receiving orders from Queensland and England. The calendar was on a late-night show in England, and the Daily Telegraph came up to take photos as well. “I guess its true what people say - nudity sells.” Calendars are available at Carrington Bowling Club for $25 each. -Kayla Stephenson

The wheels on the bus bring Christmas joy ou are bound to have seen it driving around the streets of Newcastle, it’s bright, it’s colourful and it is full of Christmas cheer. That’s right, it’s the Christmas Bus. The decorated Christmas bus has been operating for 19 years and has brought countless smiles to Newcastle faces. Margaret Pannell is the mastermind behind the idea. Having started in 1997 as a parttime bus driver, Ms Pannell noticed a lack of Christmas enthusiasm from passengers.
Christmas Bus drivers, Margaret Pannell and Gavin Barlin.
“I got to know all the little old ladies that caught that bus and, being the second oldest of seven kids, I’m always excited about Christmas,” Ms Pannell said. “I just found it really difficult that they weren’t looking forward to Christmas. I could sort of understand because I had lost my husband just before Christmas years before, so I just put some tinsel on the bus and brought
a cassette player with some Christmas carols. They loved it and from that it was ‘are you going to put something on the bus next year?’” Inside, the bus is inundated with festive colour, images of Santa are stuck to the windows, tinsel is intertwined up the poles and on the roof, and Christmas carols echo through. You’ll find yourself encountering the likes of Santa, his Christmas elves, and maybe even the Grinch on your travels. “I think the bus helps people to go back to their childhood when they step in, and the reactions from the people who have only seen if from the outside and think ‘aw yeah that looks good’ but then they come in and they are stunned and don’t want to leave. “ Margaret also uses her spare time to do voluntary work, taking the elderly people of Swansea out to see the Christmas lights every year. - Kayla Stephenson
Tourism boost for Port Stephens Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, has welcomed the announcement of $187,000 in funding to boost tourism in the Port Stephens region. Announced earlier this week by Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres, the funding coms under the state government’s 2015-16 Regional Visitor Economy Fund and will go toward a marketing campaign aimed at building destination appeal and bringing more visitors to the region. “The funding will be matched by Destination Port Stephens and will be used to raise awareness of key visitor experiences in Port Stephens, with the aim of increasing overnight visitation during the shoulder and low seasons,” Mr MacDonald said. Destination Port Stephens president Allan Ray echoed Mr MacDonald’s sentiments. “We will use this grant to support the investment of our 300 dedicated members of Destination Port Stephens by funding a major TV, print and digital media campaign to promote the amazing experiences on offer in Port Stephens,” Mr Ray said. FOOD
The force is strong with Empire Coffee Co's Glen Fredricks.
THESE ARE THE BREWS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR hile it was never intended to be a Star Wars themed café, the Empire Coffee Co has quickly become the place to grab a quality coffee, a great breakfast or some healthy light meals and treats while indulging in all of your childhood Star Wars fantasies. Opening it's doors earlier this year, on the corner of Union and King Streets, owner Glen Fredricks said that such was the demand for a larger premises, they have recently moved into new digs in Crown Street, Newcastle. “Actually, the name came first before the Star Wars twist,” Glen told Newcastlle Weekly. “We were kicking around names and my wife suggested the Empire Coffee Co and my eyes lit up – I think she realised what she had done and, before she could take it back, I was on the computer registering the business name the domain name, Instagram and Facebook.
“We originally started on the corner Union and King Streets – it was a very small shopfront and we found that we quickly outgrew it in terms of what we needed – there were no tables and chairs, it was strictly 'grab-and-go',” While Fredericks said the initial Star Wars concept was just for a bit of fun, it quickly became much more, with the café becoming as much a museum to the iconic sci-fi flick as it is an eatery. “We were planning on just having a bit of fun with it – dressing up in the Stormtrooper costume every now and then, but we found that, more and more, people were coming in demanding to see more Star Wars stuff,” he laughed. “This new place is a lot bigger, but if it were bigger again I could fit even more Star Wars stuff in because I’ve still got alot in the stockroom and stuff at home and I rotate it every few days. I’ll take some stuff on display and replace it with

something else, so people are coming in every few days, looking through the cabinet seeing new stuff all the time. “People have been bringing their own memorabilia to display as well, friends and people I have just met as well, which is fantastic. The novelty aspect of the café aside, Fredricks said that there was as much attention paid to brewing up great coffee (sourced from local roasters River Roast) and providing a delectable menu as there was curating all of the wonderful Star Wars memorabilia. “To some degree, there’s the novelty angle of the Star Wars thing that will pull people in but, if we don’t have really good coffee and great food, they’re only going to come once,” he said. “We started off with some really good food and now we’ve got a chef working Friday, Saturday and Sundays and her menu is just outstanding. Her name is Samantha and she trained at Merewether Surfhouse and Blue Star Catering. We’ve just updated out breakfast and lunch menu and the stuff that she is coming up with is fantastic,” Glen’s wife Joanne added. “We’ve got things like an avocado smash, vegan fritters, vegan corn cakes, eggs Benny with twist – with an awesome Spanish onion salsa verde with avocado, fried haloumi sides, a big breakfast with potato rosti, two gourmet sausages, tomato salsa verde, garlic mushrooms we’ve got a smoked salmon bagel with vegan cream cheese, waffles, Nutella French toast and so much more. We also do all-day breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and as we are growing and developing, so is our menu and it’s only going to get better and better.” Empire Coffee Co – 3 Crown Street Newcastle. - Stephen Bisset 15

A JETS RAMPAGE
For more than 25 years, the Screaming Jets have been one of the most bankable and hardest working touring acts in the country. Now, they’re gearing up for what promises to be yet another mammoth two-night run at the Cambridge. It’s going to be huge. ot on the heels of their hugely successful, sell-out 25th anniversary tour that ate up most of 2014, Newcastle’s favourite sons, The Screaming Jets, have been on the road solidly since September on one of their biggest Australian tours to date. Dubbed the Rock and Roll Rampage tour, the run will, fittingly, see The Jets wrap up proceedings with two red letter shows at the Cambridge Hotel this weekend. Foundation bass player Paul Woseen told Newcastle Weekly that a Cambridge gig was always an exciting proposition for the band, 18
given the long-standing relationship between the band and the venue. “Yeah, I’d reckon with the amount of sweat I’ve spilled there over the years, there’s probably some of my DNA ingrained on that stage,” he laughed. “Also, apart from playing some bloody good gigs there, I’ve also drunk a hell of a lot of beers there and seen a hell of a lot of great bands there as a punter – it’s always great to get back.” While punters can expect a fair offering of the Jets formidable back catalogue, the band

has never been one to wallow in sentimentality so, don’t be surprised to hear some freshly minted tracks from the band’s forthcoming album Chrome. Produced by Steve James, the production brain behind the Jets first two albums, All for One, and Tear of Thought and their fourth World Gone Crazy, Woseen said that Chrome was an unapologetic rock and roll record with some modern flourishes. “At its heart, it’s a massively rocking album,” he said. “We kind of wanted to strike a balance between where we have come from as a band to where we have evolved to now. The current line-up of the band [Dave Gleeson, Paul Woseen, Scott Kingman, Jimi Hocking and Micki Sayers] have been together for seven years now which is our longest consistent lineup, and it really shows - we’re a bloody good band and I think the record is a great indication of that.” Since forming from the ashes of seminal Newcastle outfit Aspect in 1989, The Screaming Jets have gone from Newcastle to national favourites. With such unpretentious rock and roll belters as Better, Helping Hand, Sad Song and October Grey under their collective belt, the Jets essentially picked up, and continued to run with, the formidable pub rock mantle laid down by the likes of The Angels (which Jets frontman Dave Gleeson now fronts) Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel. They are a band that soar in the live arena and, as anyone who has seen the Jets in action can attest, even on an off night, these guys are still one of the most formidable rock and roll acts in the country. For Woseen, the inherent unpretentious attitude that has surrounded the band from day one is what has seen it survive for so long. “There has never really been any preciousness or egos in the Jets and I think that helps,” he said. “Also, we’ve got a bloody great bunch of musicians who can write some top-quality songs and, to top it all off, we’ve got the best bloody fans in the world.” Screaming Jets - Cambridge Hotel - Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December. - Stephen Bisset

project which will be released sometime in the new year was a bold departure from Leave Me Dreaming’s mix of classic soul and funk inspiration wrapped in a quintessentially pop framework, in that the majority of the tracks would be original. “Unlike the last record, most of the songs on the new thing will be originals - we might throw in a surprise cover, you never know,” he said. “But it’s great to be working with Chew again – we’ve known each other since ‘95 when I was living in Amsterdam and he has since moved to New York and become quite a well-known producer, working with the likes of Lady Gaga. So, we’ve been doing all these trans-continental co-writes and he’s also got the great Bootsy Collins on board which is just so exciting but, at this stage, we’re still unsure if the finished product will be an EP or a full album.” Starting his career in the 1970s
STILL DREAMING AFTER ALL THESE YEARS ith his beguiling 2014 release Leave Me Dreaming still generating sold-out shows, Steve Clisby is wasting no time striking while the iron is hot. The US/Australian singer will be making a welcome return to Newcastle this week in between working on a follow-up-to Leave Me Dreaming which will see the seasoned performer work with
acclaimed producer Chew Fu (Lady Gaga, Rhianna) and undeniable funk legend Bootsy Collins. “I’m absolutely looking forward to getting back to Newcastle – I always have great gigs up there and this one is quite exciting because I’ve never played the Depot before and I’ve heard really cool things about it,” he said. Clisby added that his current

after relocating from the US to Holland, Clisby forged a twodecade career as part of the band American Gypsy who, with tours with the likes of Chaka Khan, Kool and the Gang, Tina Turner, Santana and Frank Zappa, cemented themselves as one of the premier African American soul voices in Europe. Oh he’s also jammed with Jimi Hendrix and written songs for the likes of Groove Armada and Neneh Cherry. Having burst into Australia’s musical consciousness on season two of The Voice, Clisby has eclipsed the reality TV persona, making quite a name for himself as an artist who is loathe to be pinned down to one particular style. “I love it all, man. There’s plenty of great jazz out there, plenty of great pop and plenty of fantastic electronic dance music out there. “It’s a very exciting time to be creating music.” Steve Clisby - The Depot on Beaumont - Thursday, December 17 - Stephen Bisset

Where do you find your inspiration? My brain is switched on with ideas 24/7. I dream a lot of ideas, I get ideas from travelling. Inspiration just comes from life - I know it sounds cliché but it’s just a matter of always having your eyes open. I love greeting cards they inspire me a lot, they are often quite funny with cute diagrams. What has been some of your biggest challenges so far? Probably, my biggest challenge in my life was that I had a learning disability. I couldn’t really read or write that well as a kid and I got told a lot that I wouldn’t succeed in life. I think overcoming that with the help of remedial classes, the support of my parents and just having confidence showed that, while I didn’t fit into the school system, it didn’t mean I’m not smart. How has the Christmas tour been thus far? It's nice to be able to say hello to the staff and to meet the customers - they are very vocal in telling me what I’m doing right and wrong. It was a customer's idea to start plus sizes, so we start that next year. Also ,when I go on tour, I get to sign a lot of autographs and people want to tell me how wonderful I am and no one does that back at the office besides my mum, haha.
You’ve collaborated with a quite a few well-known entities from Disney to Sesame Street. How do you decide on these collaborations? Well, it depends. Sometimes people approach me, but with Sesame Street, for example, I had this fantasy as a child to go onto Sesame Street, so I went to see the head office in New York and was like 'look, I want to do a collaboration'. They looked up the brand, and said, 'we’ve never let a commercial brand shoot on Sesame Street but we love the happiness and the joy that your brand is all about', so I got to literally go on set with the all the Muppets and that was a childhood dream come true, to be able to talk to Cookie Monster. You’ve created a collection in support of the RSPCA, can you tell me a bit about it? We try to do something different in support of the RSPCA each year, so what we decided on is chocolate and it is photographs of gorgeous boys on the front wearing my pyjamas or you can also get beautiful dogs. We have Peter Alexander playing cards and we also have wrapping paper. 100% of the proceeds go to the RSPCA, because it really bugs me when people do charity things and the charity only sees, like, 10%. - Kayla Stephenson

The Alice in Wonderland-style tale centres on Chihiro (left), a feisty girl who accidentally winds up in a spirit world while moving house with her family. The wonder turns sour when her parents are turned into pigs by spirits after they greedily eat a free meal. With an assortment of fantastical characters helping her, Chihiro tries to break the spirits’ spell. A feast for the eyes as well as the mind.

Love Actually
LOTR: The Two Towers
Monday, PRIME, 8.30pm, M (2003) Love knows no bounds for the multitude of characters in this ensemble romantic comedy from screenwriter Richard Curtis (Notting Hill). Hugh Grant, Colin Firth (right), Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson and Keira Knightley lead a cheerful circle of Londoners – interrelated by family or friendship – looking for something a little extra in their stocking in the leadup to Christmas. Grant is dynamite as the hip British Prime Minister on the lookout, Bill Nighy is a hoot as a cheeky, over-the-hill rocker, and Martin Freeman scores laughs as a nude body double.
Saturday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2002) Peter Jackson underlined his status as one of cinema’s true visionaries with his second episode of J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast trilogy. Squeezing the complexity of the novel into three hours, Jackson still finds time to devote around 40 minutes to one of the most spectacular battle sequences ever captured. But the true triumph lies closer to Mordor, where Frodo (Elijah Wood, above) and Sam (Sean Astin) are joined by Gollum. Aided by the voice of Andy Serkis, Gollum is cinema’s first truly believable 3D character. A rare sequel that improves upon the stunning original.

2015 has been a big year for Sia, with plenty of personal and professional growth, and 2016 looks like it may be just as big. Feeling a need for a change, the balance between attention to home, personal goals, career, private life and public life comes into focus, and Sia will have some important decisions to make in the coming 12 months.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
This is the ideal month to take time off to be with close friends and loved ones and to simply enjoy life. With Uranus running retrograde you need to be selective of what you and the family do; taking on too much will only exhaust you.
Uranus retrograde warns you to tread lightly with loved ones and associates as disagreements are likely because you won’t appreciate other people telling you how to live your life. Be diplomatic in trying to persuade them; you know what is best for your own wellbeing and peace of mind.
With nostalgic stars blazing brightly, you’ll be spending time revisiting the past; relatives you haven't seen for a while or even friends you went to school with may resurface. People are likely to be feeling somewhat vulnerable so avoid pushing a friend beyond their limits; be gentle with them.
Avoid procrastinating and focus on tying up loose ends in order to start 2016 fresh. Owing to the beneficial influences from both Venus and Neptune, your chart is full of possibilities. If you've been wanting to ask a favour of a superior or loved one, just do it!
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
With Uranus retrograde, you’ll need to avoid negative thinking. A pep talk with a friend will put you back on track. This is the ideal time to rein in your bad habits, so focus on improving your looks and diet. If that sweet tooth has flared, start by restocking your pantry.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 Avoid taking yourself too seriously and focus on creating a light-hearted atmosphere. Mars in Libra is a lucky time for business partnerships; you and your colleagues will either be able to conclude a long-term project or make a new start with a fresh project.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Uranus retrograde is all about purging and regeneration, so instead of over-indulging in food or drink at the slightest provocation, why not try a quick detox or toss out some old clothes. Consider a gentle exercise program or go for walks with the family dog or friends.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23 Uranus retrograde warns you about burning the candle at both ends, so focus on keeping everything in moderation otherwise your body will respond to the stress that you’re likely to put it under. You’re likely to drink and eat too much so catch a ride, don’t drive.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 You’ll be feeling confident and can look forward to plenty of good chats and a few startling revelations while out socialising with friends, colleagues, neighbours or a new crowd. If you are looking for Christmas presents, listen to your intuition and you’re sure to nab a few bargains.
On a professional level, you're becoming more efficient with both your time and money, but don't waste energy trying to cajole others, they'll join in their own time. Meanwhile channel your enthusiasm into a project at work or release your inner clean freak at home.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 Uranus is retrograde and you will need to be very careful of your spending habits. In the coming year, you will no longer be able to drift along making the same old mistakes; the lessons you will be learning will be of accountability and responsibility.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 Some much anticipated news will bring a fortuitous gain, so get that bubbly on ice! For singles, power might act as an aphrodisiac, but be careful of mixing work and play. Uranus is retrograde so take care when discussing sensitive subjects with friends and loved ones.

MRS CLAUS They say that behind every good man, there’s a great woman and truer words have never been spoken when it comes to Mrs Claus. If it wasn’t for her fantastic organisational skills, and unyielding support, I’d never get to all the boys and girls on Christmas Eve. Also, she’s the only one who knows how to program the GPS. Ho! Ho! Ho!
My favourite things CHRISTMAS EVE TREATS Getting to sample all of the lovely treats left out for me by all of the wonderful boys and girls around the world is one of the best things about my job. In the old days, it was normally the good old fruitcake or biscuits and a glass of milk but, these days I’m seeing things like Nutella-filled doughnuts, mixed berry tarte tatin and salted caramel macarons. Not that I’m complaining, mind you – well, perhaps my waistline is. Ho! Ho! Ho!
THE HUNTER REGION As you can imagine, in my line of work, I visit a lot of places and your part of the world is one of my absolute favourites. The gorgeous coastline from Port Stephens to Newcastle, to picturesque Lake Macquarie and out to the rolling rural vistas of the Hunter Valley and beyond. If you could see it all from where I was sitting, you’d see what all the fuss was about. Mrs Claus and I often visit in the off-season – most recently to the Fleetwood Mac concert at Pokolbin. They were fantastic’.

REINDEER
CHRISTMAS GOODWILL COMPANY PTY LTD
Saint Nicholas, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Pelznickel – Santa Claus may go by many names but, when it comes to Christmas, the jolly man in the red suit is ubiquitous. Newcastle Weekly was lucky enough to get a couple of minutes with Santa, in between saddling the reindeer, marshalling the elves and double-checking those lists, to find out about a few of his favourite things.
If it weren’t for these eight fantastic reindeer of mine, I’d just be a slightly overweight man sitting in an overly ornate sleigh in the middle of the North Pole. They are the humblest of creatures yet the feats they are able to accomplish are simply amazing. Although, we did have a bit of a problem a few years ago with some of the reindeer getting upset at all the publicity Rudolph was getting but it’s all water under the bridge now’.

SANTA’S ELVES These wonderful little guys are the heart and soul of the whole operation. Even now, while I’m here talking to you, they’re toiling away in Santa’s Workshop putting the finishing touches on all the toys and making sure that they are put in the correct sacks and, let me tell you, there are a LOT of toys. The best thing is that they always come to work with a smile on their little faces and a song in their little hearts and they have never once asked for overtime. Ho! Ho! Ho!
