From the editor We love a 'local person done good' story here at the Newcastle Weekly and our cover star, this week, certainly fits that bill. Kurri-bred songwriter Melody Pool played her first show at Newcastle's now defunct View Factory to just four people but is now hitting the road on a national tour to promote her beautifully lilting second record Deep Dark Savage Heart. Melody is playing two shows in the Hunter this month and, if you've been lucky enough to grab a ticket, you're in for quite an intimate experience. If not, you'll just have to pick up a copy of the album or turn to page 11 to find out how you can win a copy. Melody may've traded Kurri for the metropolis of Melbourne, but she'll always be a Hunter girl to us! So all of the pollies are well and truly on the hustings now with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull giving the green light for a double dissolution election on 2 July. Given that this will be the second-longest campaign in Australian history - a whopping 55 days - here's hoping that our incumbents and challengers are able to eschew the 'sound bite' campaigning that seems to typify much of the political discourse in this country, in favour of some meaningful policy discussion. Have a great week! - Stephen Bisset

Budget comes up short cloud of uncertainty hangs over the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange after the project was overlooked in the 2016 federal budget. The two-stage project, long flagged as a priority for the Hunter and one which will connect Glendale and Cardiff with road links and a railway station, received no funding in the Turnbull government’s no-frills budget. The government will invest $3 million in infrastructure, but this will mostly be spent in Victoria. This leaves a $26 million hole to fill on the remainder of the first stage of the interchange, which involves the construction of a
bridge over Pennant Street, Cardiff. Preliminary work to extend and realign Glendale Drive and install new traffic lights – for which funding has already been secured – started last year and is expected to finish in September. However, tools will stay down and stall the second stage of the project – the railway station and the interchange itself – unless the project gains more funding. Lake Macquarie has already footed $6 million towards the $32 million bridge construction works, but the state and federal governments are yet to put up any money for this section. Member for Charlton Pat
Conroy said he wasn’t surprised the project didn’t receive any funding in the federal budget. “The coalition have twice refused Lake Macquarie council’s applications for further funds and in 2014 they actually cut more than $1 million from it,” he said. Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon agreed, saying time was running out. “There is some really exciting progress being made on the interchange at the moment, but there has to be further funding or work is going to stall,” he said. The pair have vowed to fight for further funding if they are re-elected at the 2 July election, given that
the project covers ground in their electorates - Hunter (Fitzgibbon) and Shortland (Conroy). The budget also left working parents in the lurch, with childcare subsidies delayed for a year. University fee deregulation is off the table, however, the government has kept almost $2 million in savings from Higher Education Reform in the forward estimates, suggesting it will pursue this reform if re-elected. There were some winners in this year’s budget. Small businesses will benefit from a tax cut from 1 July, while $2.2 million has been allocated to compensate fishers whose waterways have been closed by the Williamtown RAAF base firefighting foam contamination. A new initiative to combat youth unemployment – Youth Jobs Path – will get young people on welfare payments on their feet with the introduction of an internship program. The program will award participants who work 15 to 25 hours a week $200 a fortnight to top up their payments. The government announced an extra $1.2 billion for schools between 2018 and 2020, and $2.9 billion for public hospitals between 2017-18 and 2019-20. - Georgia Osland
NBN causes headaches for Hunter residents Newcastle, Warners Bay and Belmont North are among the top four suburbs in Australia for complaints about the rollout of the National Broadband Network. In a quarterly report released by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman last week, the Hunter suburbs placed second, third and fourth respectively, behind Toukley, based on the number of complaints per thousand people. Newcastle residents lodged 5.3 4
complaints per thousand, while Warners Bay and Belmont North each had five unhappy customers per thousand. The three Hunter postcodes, in which the top reported issue was internet connection delay, contributed 257 new complaints about the fibre-to-the-node NBN between January and March. One resident who shares the frustrations of those 257 people is Belmont’s Dean Gavin.
Mr Gavin’s internet service with Optus was disconnected earlier in the year without notice. He phoned Optus to find out why, upon which Optus told him it was preparing to send out a technician to connect his home to the NBN. Mr Gavin said Optus specified a number of dates for this to take place, but each time a technician failed to show up, until one day, about a month later, the NBN was finally connected.
He then experienced frequent dropouts in service and speeds sub-par to his previous ADSL service for about another month until it picked up. “It was honestly a waste of time,” he said. “I spent somewhere around 30 hours accumulated over just the first month [talking to Optus customer service] and I got nowhere.” - Georgia Osland
Nurse flags penalty rate concerns
AIN (Assistant in Nursing) Jeanette Hatch at her home in Redhead. Photo: Jamie Wicks
o some, working weekends is the ultimate sacrifice, but for 57-year-old AIN (Assistant in Nursing) Jeanette Hatch, it’s a reality she faces to make ends meet. The Redhead nurse, who works in aged care at Uniting Care Garden Suburb, lives alone and has to support herself on a single income. In light of the Productivity Commission’s recent report – which recommended cutting Sunday double-time penalty rates back to Saturday time-and-a-half rates in the hospitality and retail industry – Ms Hatch has voiced her concerns that any cuts could open the door to changes in other industries. “I’m concerned it would give the government a foot in the door to make changes in nursing and aged care,” she said. If this were to happen, Ms Hatch said she would lose about $200
a week, and, instead of working weekends with two days off during the week, she would be forced to work seven days a week to pay the bills. “It would cripple me financially,” she said. The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, which has a branch in Newcastle East, echoed Ms Hatch’s concerns. General Secretary Brett Holmes said the association was against any decision to cut penalty rates. “While the Productivity Commission report currently excludes health workers from recommended penalty rate cuts, the NSWNMA warns the proposed exemption is unreliable,” he said. “There is a real prospect that changes in one industry will have a ripple effect to others.” Ultimately, the decision rests with the independent Fair
Work Commission. Regardless of which party is elected at the federal ballot on 2 July, they would be obliged to honour the commission’s decision. Minister for Employment Michaelia Cash said the Fair Work Commission was currently conducting a review of penalty rates. “Any changes to penalty rates that arise from the process will be as a result of the legislative parameters for the review that were set by the previous government and Mr [Bill] Shorten,” she said. “The government’s very firm view is that penalty rates should continue to be set by the independent Fair Work Commission and not the government. “The government has no plans to change these arrangements.” - Georgia Osland

Some of the dogs with their owners at Thomas H Halton Park, Croudace Bay. Photo: Jamie Wicks
Don’t fence us in
I
t’s the dog park where everybody knows your name – and your dog’s name. Thomas H Halton Park in Croudace Bay is a flat, open park where dogs are permitted to roam leash-free in the morning and afternoon, with access to swim in the lake. On a weekend, there can be up to 100 dogs and their owners
gathered in the park. But it’s more than just a safe area for dogs to play, it’s a community, according to Charlestown’s Louise Hardes, who has been taking her dog Molly there for years. “It is truly like a big family,” she said. However, all that could change if Lake Macquarie council decides to fence a section of the
park under its Thomas H Halton Park Master Plan, which is currently being drafted. The plan includes a park upgrade, new playground, BMX track, skate park upgrade and dog exercise area. The council has already pegged a rough boundary, separating what would become a designated dog exercise area from the shared cycleway closest to Macquarie Drive, which is frequented by cyclists. Dog access to the lake could be restricted. A statement from the council said Section 94 development contributions – collected from developers to upgrade infrastructure, services, recreation and community facilities – provided for a fenced dog exercise area at the park. “As part of the master plan development, council is investigating where the fenced area will be located within the park and how it will operate,” it said.
“We do not currently know whether there will be modifications to the existing off-leash arrangements.” It is anticipated the draft plan will be placed on public exhibition later this year, at which point the council will call for feedback. However, the Croudace Bay dog-walking community is unhappy. Mrs Hardes said the council had not consulted the group on any changes to the park. “If they have made up their mind unbeknownst to us, it’ll be too late to do anything about it by the time they make the changes,” she said. To make their case, six representatives will speak on behalf the group during public access at the ordinary council meeting on Monday 23 May. They have also created a Facebook group, called ‘Save Croudace Bay Dog Park!!!’, to rally community support. - Georgia Osland

Newcastle’s Penny Harnett is using technology to raise awareness about abusive relationships. Photo: Jamie Wicks
Raising iWareness about domestic violence Newcastle app developer has been shortlisted to take part in a program aimed at fostering digital innovation while changing the social landscape of our communities. Penny Harnett, who also works with Samaritans, is one of 11 shortlisted finalists for the Optus Future Makers program and has a chance of securing a
$50,000 grant to make her app a reality. The app, iWareness, is a self-help tool for men, women and children to help identify if they or someone they know is in an abusive relationship. “It’s an interactive app that offers tips and scenarios about domestic violence while also dispelling the myths,” she said. “It also gives people the chance to learn about different types of abuse as well as the opportunity to be connected to relevant support services.” Penny said she believed the use of technology, especially in engaging young people, was integral to breaking the cycle of violence. “I think it’s essential,” she said. “Technology is such a big part of people’s lives, these days, and it’s a really good platform to engage people on a number of issues. Penny, along with ten other hopefuls, will attend a series of “Accelerator” workshops, hosted by mentors and experts before making a final pitch to a panel of judges on 20 July. - Stephen Bisset

news Lake Macquarie Shirley Club turns one Wanted DVDs
O
ver the past year, Shirley Arnold and Shirley Pollitt have been eating and drinking their way through Lake Macquarie. And they’ve been in good company. The pair have been travelling up and down the coast, from Warners Bay to The Entrance, on various social outings and excursions with 13 other Shirleys. Arnold and Pollitt formed the Lake Macquarie Shirley Club a year ago. As the name suggests, the club is open exclusively to Shirleys. The concept started in Perth, where the first Shirley Club was founded in 1996 by a woman named Shirley Brown, who was named after child actress Shirley Temple. It has since become a global phenomenon, with clubs cropping up all over Australia, New Zealand and parts of America. But until last year, Lake Macquarie had been Shirley club-less. So, Shirley Arnold and Shirley Pollitt, who had been travelling to Hunter Valley Shirley Club outings in Maitland, decided

to fix that. The pair now proudly reflect on how successful the Lake Macquarie club has been. “I’m pleased to meet such a nice group of people,” Shirley Pollitt said. To celebrate the club’s first birthday, it will host a luncheon at Awaba House in Booragul on Thursday 19 May. It will kick off with a tour of Awaba House at 11.45am, with lunch and birthday cake to follow at 12.30pm. The event is open to anyone named Shirley. Anyone interested in joining the club should phone Shirley Arnold on 4013 4437 or Shirley Pollitt on 4793 3936. - Georgia Osland

the kind of buzz that it did, so with this album, there was a definite sense of wanting to do better, but for me rather than anyone else.” Following the success of The Hurting Scene, Melody pulled up stumps and relocated from her native Kurri Kurri to the metropolis of Melbourne. She said that this change in geography and the
sense of isolation that engendered, informed much of the tone of Deep Dark Savage Heart. “I experienced definite feelings of isolation and feeling isolated in a big city is quite different to feeling isolated in a place like Kurri,” she said. Melody pulls no punches in delivering heart-onthe-sleeve themes –not least of which with the track Black Dog which deals with the songwriter’s own struggles with depression. However, the album also comes with an overarching sense of hope. “A lot of the characters on this record are my depression - something that I can’t avoid talking about anymore,’ she said. “Having said that, I like to think that there is a feeling that you don’t have to go through it alone.” Now, with Deep Dark Savage Heart winning hearts and minds across the country, Melody is set to return to where it all began with two shows in the Hunter this month – the first a sold-out show at the

FACEPLANT RETURN One of Newcastle’s favourite bands, FACEplant, will be making a welcome return to the Cambridge stage this weekend. Forming in 1993, FACEplant burst onto the scene winning the inaugural Northern NSW Battle Of The Bands challenge before embarking on a rigorous touring regime, cranking out 200 gigs over the next two years. In February 1995, they released their debut EP Upper Case Face (produced by Screaming Jets founder Grant Walmsley). The EP sold 2000 copies in the first two weeks and saw them land NO.83
on the national ARIA charts. A short time ago, the members of the band crossed paths again, and went into the rehearsal room to ‘see what would happen. A flame ignited – it burned with a blinding iridescence. Catch FACEplant, reborn for the new millennium, at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday 14 May.

A spoonful of creativity F
or Waratah creative Bec Stern, her life’s passion and what she does for a living are one and the same. Owner of handmade business House of Bec, the young entrepreneur and mother-of-one upcycles silverware sourced from op shops and antique shops. From teaspoons to soup spoons to cake servers, the pieces are flattened, one by one, in a bottle jack and stamped with individual letter blocks to bring each piece back to life with quotes, significant dates and other fine details. Bec takes custom orders to
mark milestones such as weddings, birthdays – even the passing of a family pet. She also makes jewellery - including rings, necklaces and earrings - cast from real succulents in sterling silver and gold. All of this is achieved from the confines of a cosy workshop in Mayfield East. Bec sells her items – both premade and custom-made – online on Etsy and at the Olive Tree Market and the Impossible Market in Newcastle and the Finders Keepers markets in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Bec started her business about three years ago.

“I didn’t really set out to have a business, I just wanted to make stuff, because that’s what I’m passionate about,” she said. “I was at this point in my life where I didn’t really know what I was doing, so I just opened up an Etsy shop and it grew from there.” Today, House of Bec has more than 10,000 Instagram followers. “I’m proud that I’ve created
something that genuinely reflects what I believe and the way that I live and the things that are important to me,” Bec said. House of Bec items are available for purchase at etsy.com/au/shop/ HouseofBec with worldwide postage. Cutlery starts from as little as $12, while jewellery starts at $55 a piece. - Georgia Osland

Talk to us about our new season vinyl now in store, or, if you’re looking for carpet, we have plenty of new-stock carpets in our warehouse.
This year, I received a wonderful gift on Mother’s Day – my granddaughter Clare helped me at the nursery. The best present ever - the third generation of Sharpes! Many mums and grandmothers were given a living gift of a potted plant. As usual, flowering plants were the popular choice, although, obviously younger mums had asked for the latest trend - Ficus lyrata (fiddleleaf fig) and succulents. Some hints for those precious cyclamen, which look like hot house plants but, in fact, love the cold winter nights. If being displayed in a heated room, pop it outside at night in a sheltered spot. Water carefully under the foliage, being careful not to soak these beautiful plants. Chrissies, once the more popular choice, will continue for many weeks if dead blooms are removed to encourage new flowers. Give it a well-lit position and, when flowering has finished,
plant it out in the garden to produce again next year. I was pleased to see Begonia elator being selected from the many IN THE GARDEN choices including JUDY SHARPE newly flowering Cymbidium orchids. These hardy begonias provide blooms over a long period without a great deal of care – they don’t like to be overwatered!
THIS WEEK • Begin misting Maiden Hair each morning once indoor heating is switched on – this helps retain moisture that evaporated during the night. • Plant out spring bulbs – don’t forget those in the fridge! • Sprinkle lime around sweet peas. • Give parsley a kick with blood and bone and watch it green up. judy@newcastleweekly.com.au

Centrally located less than 10 minutes drive to the John Hunter Hospital and the University of Newcastle and less than 20 minutes to Newcastle CBD and beaches, this property certainly is within easy access of everything one needs. The home can be sold vacant so you can shift straight in. Alternatively you can benefit from also securing the tenancy of the current tenant of more than ten years who is very much wanting to stay and happy to pay $320 per week. This means not even a week would be lost in rent return, and you have the peace of mind knowing that a quality, tried and tested tenant is in place. Price: $295,000 - $324,500 FIRST OPEN THIS SATURDAY 14th May 11:00am - 11:30am

Introducing Lisa Spratt Australia is built on the backbone of the “Aussie Battler’ - the underdog. The one who refused to settle for average or ordinary, and risked absolutely everything knowing that they had something worthwhile to fight for - to share with others. Lisa is one such individual.
Lisa’s background is very different from that of most real estate agents. Having trained as a psychologist, mediator and family counsellor, Lisa worked for years in Community Health, private practice and with not-for-profit crisis support services such as Beyond Blue, Mensline and doing after-hours support work for a major national psychological group. She has felt privileged to be able to walk alongside those who were struggling and help them find hope again.
Lisa actually shifted from Melbourne to Newcastle to train to be a medical doctor but, after a few years, she started to realise that she didn’t NEED to be a one man band in order to change the world. She didn’t need to be the specialist trauma psychologist, all round rural doctor, down-to-earth minister and health and fitness expert to achieve the dreams she had in her heart. So, she left medicine nd went into renovating old, run-down miner’s cottages and homes in and around Newcastle. A love for property, design and an eye for detail have always been Lisa’s passions. Lisa thrived on turning history-filled properties that were unloved and discarded into something that would be loved and cherished for generations to come! Eventually though, after having dealt with dozens and dozens of local real estate agents while trying to find properties for her clients to purchase, and then through experiencing the selling process time and time again, one thing was very evident to her: Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland areas had very few exceptional, world-class real estate professionals!
After a range of experiences, she was convinced that she could provide the Hunter with a service that promised what it delivered and one that surpassed the expectations of her clients! Lisa brings the combined skills of her work in psychology, crisis negotiation, property development, renovation and design, and real estate sales and marketing, along with a friendly, approachable but ‘say-it-like-it-is’ manner, to present to you a real estate agency with a difference. While only a few months old, Lisa Spratt Real Estate has already had the privilege of selling property across both ends of the marketplace, from the two bedroom unit in Belmont ($335,000), through to the highest priced sale in Redhead over the last few years ($1.555 million). Lisa welcomes your call and would love to discuss your needs and situation. She is happy to provide you with a free market opinion on the price of your home, and provide a written report of her findings and justification.

PICK OF THE WEEK Title
Fight Club
Sunday, ONE, 9.30pm, MA15+ (1999) This masterpiece from David Fincher (The Social Network) is pure rock ’n’ roll cinema. A disillusioned white-collar worker (Edward Norton, left) – known only as “Jack” or “the Narrator” – takes drastic measures toward self-fulfilment after befriending the free-thinking Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), who encourages him to shelve his conventional lifestyle and consumerist habits in favour of living without a safety net.
Friday
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Title
Young Adult
Monday, SBS2, 9.25pm, M (2011) From writer Diablo Cody and director by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air), this is an unsettlingly cynical comedy drama. Carrying the film is Charlize Theron (left) who plays Mavis Gary, a vindictive 37-year-old author who acts like the young adults for whom she writes novels. Mavis takes her bad attitude back to her hometown of Mercury, Minnesota, on a mission to break up a marriage and manipulate anyone who gets in her way.
Saturday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2013) This second instalment of the three-part series picks up where part one concluded. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, right) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) have become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparked a rebellion among the districts of Panem. Philip Seymour Hoffman joins the cast as new head game-maker and conspires with President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in an attempt to manipulate Katniss and use her as a puppet in the struggle for power.

On the career front this could be a very confusing month, you're being challenged to think very carefully before you move ahead. You need to review and revise your goals whether they involve a job change, a move of property, a relationship or a trip away.
Life unfolding will encourage you to be open to new ways of thinking, while someone or something you used to dislike may turn into a new positive experience. With Venus in Taurus, love is at the top of your agenda. Prepare to have some fun with those you love!
On the career front, stay flexible when it comes to certain work duties and your pay; the less you try to control everything, the more successful you will be. There is a successful new chapter starting in your money zone; play things right and you will prosper!
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
Tried and tested methods with certain tasks won't cut it, so let your imagination soar for inspiration. A sport or interest may become quite intense, be sure to focus on your personal best or the stress of competition could detract from the joy of actually doing it.
Wading through legal matters or documents with a financial arrangement or shared venture will be an exercise in patience. Looking to the future, to build security or achieve a long-term goal, will require a well thought-out strategy. You'll start to see life very differently and discover new priorities.
To reach a compromise at work, recognise what is yours to manage and what is someone else's responsibility. Avoid coming on too strong with colleagues or clients or driving a deal too hard. Don't be too proud to admit if you’ve made a mistake, then others will be more prepared to help.
A surge of chores to help a loved one may be stressful, so keep your cool and work to a plan, or friction could develop. A purchase or expense you've been preparing for will still be a stretch but there'll be personal satisfaction in reaching your goal.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
With Mercury retrograde in your own sign, you may feel as if you are in the eye of the storm emotionally speaking and that life is going backwards. You would do best to focus on the present moment and not try to forge ahead with new projects.
This is the ideal month to start all over again when it comes to your career. It's never too late for a complete career change, if that's what you think you need. Getting clear about what you are aiming for is the key to happiness.
Supporting someone close with their fitness endeavours will bring thought-provoking discoveries. Labours of love may push up the pressure gauge; to balance a desire to help but not be imposed upon, draw a line in the sand. Counselling a loved one through their troubles will take patience.

It is important that you weigh up how much you want to be there for your friends and how much you need to look after yourself. One of your major challenges this year is to trim your social life back to the events that really matter.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 A getaway will be an education, so observe, listen and there will be a lot to learn. You’re likely to be feeling a lot of pressure this month to work very hard whilst trying to maintain a personal life; this work pressure is likely to stay with you throughout 2016.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN THE HUNTER On May 7 1966, Lifeline moved into its first premises in Lawson St Hamilton to start taking calls from people in crisis. One of our first volunteers was Sandra Crabtree from Cardiff who was a telephone counsellor for almost 20 years. Sandra is still giving to us. She sent us a beautiful 50th birthday card with a very generous cheque donation. Thanks Sandra.

THE DESIGNER DEPOT – A HUNTER FIRST.
MELLIE OWEN REACHES OUT FOR LIFELINE
Our new weekend pop up store gives people a space to sell their designer clothing. Space in the store is free but we ask sellers for a donation from their sales to support our life saving services. This means that at the Designer Depot local women have an ‘absolutely fabulous’ chance to buy quality high end fashion at a fraction of the original cost. Think Ralph Lauren, Moschino, Lisa Ho, Country Road and MORE.
Also performing her debut single Reach Out For You at Equinox is Newcastle singer Mellie Owen. Mellie experienced suicidal thoughts but was helped by Lifeline. She is donating some proceeds from the sale of the single to support our local services.
