Your classes On your first day of class you will be given your personal timetable, where your classes will be highlighted for you. The timetable will show the class(es) you have been allocated to, the classroom(s) where you will have to go to and the name of your teacher(s).
Main Classes Your main class will usually last for 3 hours (with a break of 15 minutes) and is usually either in the morning from 8:45 am to 12 pm or in the afternoon from 2:45 pm to 6 pm. Specialist classes such as IELTS preparation may follow a slightly different schedule, so make sure you check your personal timetable to find out the exact times of your class. Whether your main class is in the morning or in the afternoon depends on a variety of factors, such as your level and the availability of spaces in classes that are suitable for your level. Every Monday you will take a weekly test to help your teacher monitor your progress. You will also have regular one-toone sessions with your teacher.
Skills cLASSES If you have chosen an Intensive or Super-Intensive course, you will have to attend one (Intensive) or two (SuperIntensive) additional classes called Skills classes. These additional classes take place from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm and/or from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Skills classes, as the name suggests, will focus on additional skills that will help you improve your English even faster!
6
Social Activities
Taking part in social activities is a great way to make new friends and to practise English outside the classroom. Every week we publish a new social activity programme which is displayed in the classrooms and other areas around the school. To sign up for a social activity, speak to a member Student Support Team. It is important that you sign up in advance because an activity may be cancelled if fewer than 5 students sign up for it.
7
Police registration
Some international students have to register with the police. You can see if you have to register with the police by looking at your visa. If you do, it will say ‘Police Registration / Register with Police within 7 days’. You have to make the appointment within 7 days of arriving. To make the appointment you need to contact Merseyside Police by visiting the Merseyside Police website (www.merseyside. police.uk/about-us/our-services/overseasvisitor-registration). For your appointment, you will need to take the following:
•
Your passport (including your visa or BRP)
• • • • •
Proof of address Two recent photographs Registration fee Enrollment letter from the school Sponsor letter (if this applies to you)
The venue will be confirmed when the appointment is booked. Tel: 0151 777 5407 Email – OVRO@merseyside.police.uk A member of the student support team will assist you to make an appointment.
8
How to collect your brp If you have applied for your visa from outside the UK, you MUST collect your BRP before the vignette sticker in your travel document expires or within 10 days of arriving in the UK, whichever is later. The decision letter will tell you the address of the post office where you can collect your BRP from. The majority of students at NCG Liverpool are required to collect their BRPs from the Liverpool One, 1-3 South John Street, Liverpool, L1 8BN If you have applied for your visa from within the UK, the BRP will be posted to your address.
ncg rules Attendance You have to be at all your classes, all the time – with no exceptions. Why is my attendance so important? It is important for you to attend all of your classes because it helps you meet your goals. Your attendance is also important because it’s part of the rules for your visa – you have to attend all your classes. If your attendance rate falls below 85% you will receive warnings. You will not get a certificate if your attendance rate is lower than 80% at the end of your course. NCG make sure that we have a great environment and excellent teachers, to make sure that you succeed – so we need you to work hard, and attend all your lessons, on time!
You MUST make sure that: •
You are always on time
•
You set your alarm every night and make sure you have enough time to get ready and travel to College
•
You arrive at least 5 minutes before your class starts
•
You attend all your classes
What if I am late? • If you are up to 15 minutes late for your main class and up to 5 minutes late for your skills class, you may be allowed to enter your class. BE CAREFUL: if you are late three or more times during one week, you will be marked as absent for the full day on the third day. • If you are more than 15 minutes late and up to 30 minutes, you MUST phone +44(0)161 233 4290 and explain the reason for your being late. If the reason is valid, you will be give a LATE SLIP to enter the class. BE CAREFUL: we can give you a LATE SLIP only once per month. WHAT IF I CANNOT ATTEND? If you cannot attend, you MUST phone the school on +44(0) 151 236 2749, speak to a member of the reception staff and explain why you cannot attend. WHAT IF I WANT A HOLIDAY? You are allowed one week off for every 12 weeks of tuition that you have booked. To book your time off, please email your request to liverpool@ newcollegegroup.com and don’t forget to mention your name, student ID number and the dates you want to take off.

ncg rules Under 18s If you are under 18 years of age, to make sure that you are safe, happy and well we require you to follow the simple extra rules below: • Attend a very brief weekly catch-up meeting with a member of the Welfare Team on Tuesdays at 12 pm. • Be back at your homestay by 10 pm every night. • Always tell us if you are going to be absent. If you are absent and we cannot contact you, we will speak to your parents and the Police! • Obtain your parents’ written permission before you ask for a holiday. In addition to the above, if you are under 16 years of age: • You will only be placed in closed classes with other students who are under 18 years of age. • You will be supervised by a member of NCG staff all the time when you are in the college, including during break times and during toilet breaks. • You will also have to be back to your homestay by 8 pm every night!
10
ncg rules Accommodation Whether you have chosen to live with a homestay host or to stay in residence, if NCG is providing you with accommodation there are a few simple rules that we ask you to observe: • Always be polite with your host and their family or with the residence staff. Remember to say “please” and “thank you” when you ask them for something! • Keep your bedroom, the bathroom and the other common areas in your accommodation as tidy as possible at all times. • Keep the noise to a minimum between 10 pm and 8 am. • If you live with a host, always let them know if you are not going back for dinner or are spending the night out (only if you are over 18 years of age!). • If you smoke, always do it outside. • If you break anything or lose a key, you may be charged extra for the damages. • If you wish to leave your accommodation earlier than expected, remember that you have to give NCG some notice. For the exact length of the notice, please speak to the Accommodation Officer.
11
ncg rules CODE OF CONDUCT We want you to be successful, and for the College to be a happy and safe community for you to study in.
Please make sure that you: Always show respect and speak politely to everyone in the College Remember to use good manners. Say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ Attend ALL of your classes ALWAYS arrive on time to class Make sure that you bring your pencil and notebook Speak English when you’re in the College Always do your homework Always listen to your teacher and your classmates Do not speak over your fellow students Respect the College – treat the furniture and equipment as if it was your own Don’t take food into lessons or computer rooms - water and other drinks with a lid are allowed Keep the College tidy – put your rubbish in the bins Smoke outside and away from the entrance doors Always show respect for each others’ differences. Remember that students at the school are from many different countries and cultures. Their ideas may be different to the ones in your home country. At the school you must respect these differences including differences in religion, sexuality, race, ideas and philosophy. We will not accept language or behaviour that is offensive or might be offensive to others. Where a student’s actions towards another person are bad enough to be considered “abusive behaviour” or “bullying” the school will take immediate action which may include being expelled (made to leave) from the school.
12
Polite Behaviour in the UK Manners are important in every country, but are different for everyone. Here is an overview of what polite behaviour means in the UK:
DO: •
Stand in line: in the UK, we stand neatly in line, whether it’s in a shop or waiting to board the bus. Pushing is not acceptable.
•
Say ‘excuse me’: British people say ‘excuse me’ for many things. For example, if you need to get someone’s attention, or if you need someone to move. It cannot be used too much.
•
Say ‘please’ and’ thank you’: It is good manners to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and it is considered rude not to. If you are asking for something, always say ‘please’.
•
Cover your mouth: always cover your mouth with your hand when you are yawning, coughing or sneezing.
• •
Shake hands: when you are first introduced to someone it is polite to shake hands. Say ‘sorry’: if you bump into someone by accident, say sorry. It is normal for them to say it too, even if it is not their fault!
DON’T: • •
Push in front of a line when people are waiting
• • •
Talk loudly: very loud talking and disruptive behaviour should be avoided
Stare: it is impolite to stare at anyone in public or ask personal or intimate questions: British people are very private Spit: you should never spit in the street (or inside, for that matter!) Speak with your mouth full: it is considered impolite.

help and advice welfare We have a dedicated Welfare Officer available for students. You can find out who they are by asking reception or looking at the notice boards. You can speak to them about any personal problems or other issues that you might have. They are here to help.
Dealing with abusive behaviour
If you have problems with bullying (another student making you feel very uncomfortable or upset) or your behaviour is a concern to the College, this is what happens: Step one: The Director of Studies or welfare officer will speak with the student in question. They will be warned about their conduct, and a note of warning will be made in their file. Step two: If the problem continues, they will receive a written warning from the Director of Studies. (If the student is sponsored, the sponsoring organisation will be informed). A meeting will be held with the Director of Studies to agree on a plan of improvement. The student will be sent a copy of this plan. Step three: If there is no improvement after the student has been given the plan, the student will be asked to leave the College. Appeals procedure: If the student feels that they have been dealt with unfairly, they may write to the Principal to explain 18
what has happened and why they think it is unfair. A meeting will be arranged to listen to the student’s point of view. The Principal and the Director of Studies will be at the meeting and the student may bring a friend to support them. The meeting will review the request of leaving the College, and decide to uphold it or not.
Opening a bank account You can request a letter at reception for police registration, opening a bank account, etcetera. Your letters will be ready the following day.
Change of address If your address changes before the end of your course, you MUST let us know. This is a requirement for your visa – NCG must always have a current address for you. You can give us your new address at reception.
help and advice complaints At New College Group we aim to provide the highest quality service, and we want you to be happy whilst you are studying with us. We understand that sometimes a student might feel unhappy with something in the College. We want to help put this right as soon as possible. To help us to do this, please follow these steps: Step one: talk to your teacher/Welfare Officer. They will try to help you solve the problem. Step two: If you do not think the problem has been solved, you can arrange a meeting with the Director of Studies. At this meeting a written record will be made of the problem and suggestions for solutions will be recorded. You will be given a copy of this. The suggestions will be tried, and hopefully the problem will be resolved.
Appeal to an independent body
If you are unhappy with the College’s response, you can appeal to English UK, to help with your problem. You must appeal in English and must write in person (you have to write to them yourself, not your parents, family or an agent). The email address is: info@englishuk.com. You can only do this after you have gone through the College’s own procedure. You are advised to keep attending your classes the whole time – if you simply leave and stop attending your classes, the College or English UK are unlikely to respond to your complaint. If you are studying on a visa, you will be breaking the terms and conditions of your visa if you do not attend your classes.
Step three: if you do not think that the problem has been solved, you should speak with the Principal. They will try to address the problem. You can bring a friend or another student with you to discuss the complaint.

safety
Security
For your safety, NCG uses a key card system to enter the building. All members of staff and students wear lanyards with a keycard that identifies them. You can recognise staff by their yellow lanyards that say STAFF. You can recognise students by their pink, purple or blue lanyards. You must ALWAYS WEAR YOUR LANYARD AND KEYCARD. You need this to enter the College if you go outside or to the bathroom. If you forget your keycard, you must let reception know, and you will get a replacement. If you have lost your keycard, note that a replacement keycard will cost £5. If you spot ANYONE in the school not wearing a lanyard or keycard, please tell a member of staff about them immediately. Never let anyone in through the locked doors if you can not see their lanyard!
Visitors All visitors to NCG have to sign in at reception, and will have to wear an ID card identifying them as a visitor. Visitors will always be accompanied in the College by a member of staff and cannot go around the College unsupervised.
20
Never let someone in through the doors if they are not wearing a NCG ID card! If you see anyone walking around without an ID card, tell a member of staff immediately.
safety IN THE SCHOOL Fire and Emergency
first aid There are several first-aid trained members of staff in the school. If you require first aid, let any member of staff know as soon as possible. There are signs up throughout the school telling you who the first-aid trained members of staff are, and where the nearest first-aid kit is.
Inappropriate use of pcs Accessing, storing or communicating pornography or other obscene materials will lead to disciplinary procedures. This includes e-mails and college/accommodation IT facilities.
evacuation
If there is a fire or any other emergency, the fire alarm will go off. If the alarm goes off, leave all of your items behind and leave the building by the nearest exit. If you are in class, do as your teacher says. You have to go to the meeting point, which is Queen Victoria Monument in Derby Square.
NCG Emergency number +44 (0)777 470 7622
safety Outside School We want to make sure all of our students feel safe and are as safe as possible during their stay in Liverpool. Liverpool is a safe city – but like any big city, it’s wise to take some precautions to make sure you are safe. If you have any questions or concerns during your stay in Liverpool, you can come and see our Welfare Officer at NCG and we will do our best to make the situation easier for you. If you feel more comfortable talking to a teacher or other member of staff, you are also welcome to do so. 21
safety Outside School Personal information Always be suspicious of emails, texts or phone calls where you are being asked for personal information, especially passwords, PIN numbers, or account details. Never give this information out. Ask a member of NCG staff if you are not sure. Make sure you always completely destroy papers, letters and receipts. When you move house or flat, make sure that you update your address with all organisations. You don’t want any bank or credit card statements to go to your old address. Keep a record of your bank account numbers, driving license and passport details somewhere safe. This way, if you lose something or suspect it has been stolen, you will have the right information to hand. If you are destroying an old bank card, cut through the chip and magnetic strip.
when you are out and about Here are some ideas of how to take care of yourself and others during your time in Liverpool: •
Know how you will get home: plan ahead, particularly if you’re going to a part of town you don’t know.
•
Let someone know where you’re going and what time you expect to be back.
•
Ensure your mobile phone is charged and is in credit.
22
•
Watch how much you drink if you are on a night out. It is much more likely that you will do something risky or foolish if you have consumed alcohol, and you are much more likely to lose your keys, cash, or phone.
•
Always leave a club or pub with your friends.
•
If you use public transport to get home, sit near the driver.
•
Don’t walk home alone when it is dark. Avoid areas that are badly lit, like parks and bridges.
•
Pre-book a licensed taxi or know the locations of official taxi ranks. Never get in someone’s car if you are not sure if they are a real taxi.
Your belongings Don’t make it easy for a potential thief to help themselves to your belongings! Make sure you have contents insurance or travel insurance that covers you for theft. Don’t leave cash, jewellery, or other valuables lying around the house or college. Keep them out of sight or in a safe place. Don’t carry large amounts of cash on you. Don’t use your phone in an empty street or park, or late at night. Remember – texting can distract you from what is going on around you! If you have a bike, invest in a good quality lock and use it.
ROAD safety road safety - cycling If you decide that you want to cycle, please wear a cycling helmet and make sure that you have working lights on the front and the back of your bicycle. Please remember: You can be fined for riding your bike on the pavement. You can be fined for not using lights on your bike at night. Learn the road signs – you need to know where you can and cannot cycle . Always follow the Highway Code (the UK’s book of road rules) and obey traffic signals. Red means STOP! Don’t cycle in busy pedestrian areas. Get off and push the bicycle instead. Use your arms to indicate where you are going.
Road safety - Driving In the UK, people drive in the left hand lane. Speeding is an offence, and there are cameras that can catch you if you are speeding. The speed limit on the motorway is 70 mph, or 112 kmph. The speed limit in towns and cities is usually 30 mph, or 48.2kmph. It is illegal to drink alcohol and drive. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. You have to wear a seat belt. You cannot use your mobile phone in the car when driving, you can be fined up to £1000.
Always follow the UK’s book of road rules. It is called the highway code and you can read it, download it or get the app from http://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk
Get one, but preferably two, bicycle locks and always lock your bicycle to a solid object, like a bicycle rack.

Do I need to pay for my healthcare? All doctors and hospitals that aren’t private are run by the NHS. If you are a citizen of a country that has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, you will be covered for most treatment needs. If you are subject to immigration control, you must have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa application. Regardless of where you are from, some NHS services or treatments are free to all (although prescription, dentistry and other charges may still apply). These include: •
Accident and emergency services – not including emergency treatment if admitted to hospital.
•
Family planning services – this does not include termination of pregnancy or infertility treatment.
•
Treatment for most infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Should I get private medical insurance? Even if you are entitled to free NHS treatment whilst in the UK, you should consider taking out insurance which covers other medical-related costs. An insurance policy may cover, for example:
•
Costs of returning home if a relative is ill.
•
Costs of a relative visiting you in the UK if you fall ill.
•
Cost of returning to your home country for treatment.
There is often a long wait for NHS treatment, sometimes many months. An insurance policy which gives you access to private medical care could give you much quicker access to the treatment you need. Medical questions phone line Do you want to talk to someone right away? The NHS have a helpline that you can call to get advice on what you should do. All you have to do is ring ‘111’ on your phone. Pharmacy If you have something like a cough or cold, eye infection, or something else minor, you can go to the Pharmacy in Boots and ask their advice on medicine. If you need to see a doctor, they will tell you.
