Blakemans show their support for one of the nation’s favourite awareness days

Taking place on Friday the 4th of June 2021, National Fish & Chip day will see its 6th year in the calendar of national awareness days in the UK

The event, which is organised by NEODA (the National Edible Oil Distributors Association), encourages people from across the country to celebrate their love of Fish and Chips, whilst raising awareness and funds for the Fisherman’s Mission, the charity said:

“National fish and chip day is a fantastic event which brings together the very best of the industry. Fishing continues to be the most dangerous peacetime occupation with a 1 in 14 chance of being killed at work, the funds generated through National Fish & Chip day allows the Fisherman’s Mission to continue to provide welfare and emergency services to our fishermen and their families.”

The covid-19 pandemic caused a delay to last year’s celebrations, with them taking place in September, but the event was still a huge success for everyone involved. It caused its usual buzz with stories of the day’s events sweeping across TV, Radio, Newspapers and social media and the #nationalfishandchipday hashtag trending all day.

Throughout all of the challenges that the UK has faced in living memory, our chip shops have been there continuing to supply us with morale boosting comfort food. From being one of the only foods throughout world war 2 that was not rationed to jumping in to help to feed the children of struggling families during the October half term, when the free school meals were not available. Our chippies have proven themselves, as ever, to be a real centre point for community spirit throughout the pandemic and this day gives us the opportunity to celebrate each and every one of them.

This year, the event has returned to its usual spot on the first Friday in June and Blakemans were keen to offer their support. Phillip Blakeman, Managing Director said: “I feel that it is more important than ever for us to continue to show our support to the fish and chip industry. They have provided so much for their communities throughout the ups and downs of last 12 months; from the shops who had to adapt to constantly changing regulations to continue to operate, to those who sacrificed so much by closing their doors to keep us safe. I am hoping that the day will provide a great boost to the steadfast industry and I’m proud to be able to contribute financially towards the event as a way to thank them all for their continuing efforts”.

There are so many ways that you can join the celebrations from the simple purchase of a chip supper on the day to merchandise and even campaign kits. To find out more, please visit https://www.neoda.org.uk/national-fish-and-chip-day/
