“Collecting happiness is in the small moments every day: hugs hello and goodbye, a morning cup of tea on the bench with too many good biscuits, enjoying the flowers on my walk to nursery to pick up my daughter. It is concentrating on these things that keeps my stress less and my love for life more. Just like love, happiness is there to be found and collected. You have to choose stress or choose happiness, and in the end life is a heady mix of both because being human is not easy, but the flowers will always outweigh the bills. Acknowledge their beauty, and thank them as you pass, because someday we will all be dead in the grass”. Emily Powell, 2024

This vibrant exhibition of intensely coloured floral landscapes and still life works celebrates the beauty of the season and expresses the artist’s immense sense of gratitude for summer’s wealth of natural beauty. It has been proven again and again that being in nature is hugely important for improving our wellbeing, and that colour supercharges our mood. Emily’s work brings these two ideas together on canvas to highlight the wonder of being alive. Painted in her distinctive bold and brilliant palette, this collection demonstrates her talent for touching allegory, subtle wit and powerful emotion. Expressions of love and joy are central to Emily’s work, characterized by a host of exotic flying creatures amid scenes filled with curious trees and vivid flowers, and enhanced by her preference for painting on a monumental scale in a way that immerses the viewer in a world of colour and fantasy.

Emily studied at Norwich School of Art and at the Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Rouen in France. She has exhibited with the Royal Society of Art, collaborated with MoMA, National Galleries Scotland and The British Museum, and in 2022 she was invited to paint the entrance of London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
