WELCOME! Hello! It’s our fifth birthday this season. And what a five years it’s been – exceeding every hope and expectation we had when we opened New Diorama in 2010. Over the past five years we’ve welcomed over 100,000 audience members, worked with theatres of all sizes from across the country, supported almost 100 of the very best emerging theatre companies and had several productions transfer internationally. We couldn’t have done it without you and we can’t wait to see what the next five years hold. The brochure you are reading contains the line-up for our 2015/16 season – a selection of brilliant theatre companies from all over the UK. The season starts with PIG, from Silent Uproar, a brand new company to New Diorama, that transfers to us from a successful run at Hull Truck Theatre. The season continues with DOG SHOW, a world premiere from another new company to NDT, the multi-award winning Kandinsky. In amongst these new treats there are, of course, many familiar faces that audiences will know and love. This season sees the return of NDT Associate Ensemble Idle Motion’s sell-out hit Shooting with Light, back for a strictly limited run. Idle Motion are also reviving their Bletchley Park show, That Is All You Need To Know, as a Christmas treat for audiences and premiering a brand new show with us in Spring. NDT Associates The Faction return in 2016 with a stunning new production of RICHARD III, their most ambitious production to date with an ensemble of 21 actors. The season also sees the return of the Suspense Puppetry Festival to New Diorama (details on our website) and the third INCOMING Festival, presented with A Younger Theatre. We really think there’s something for everyone to enjoy over the next year, and we look forward to welcoming you at the Box Office! Team NDT

Tangled The first film we’ll be showing is Walt Disney’s 2010 classic, Tangled. Based on the fairy tale “Rapunzel” and the 50th animated feature in the Disney Classic Series, what better way to kick off a month of Summer Cinema!
Flubber The second in our line-up takes us back to the 90s for another Disney movie, in the shape of comedy film Flubber, starring the legendary Robin Williams. Settle in for some flubbery fun and silliness!
When the kingdom’s most-wanted bandit, Flynn Rider, hides in a convenient tower, he immediately becomes a captive of Rapunzel, the spire’s longtime resident. Crowned with 70 feet of magical golden hair, she has been locked away for years and desperately wants freedom. The feisty teenager strikes a deal with Flynn, and together they begin a whirlwind adventure.
Professor Philip Brainard is experimenting with new kinds of energy, and he thinks this project will save struggling Medfield College, where his girlfriend, Sara, is president. But when he discovers a lively, rubber-like substance dubbed “flubber,” he gets so excited, he absent-mindedly misses his own wedding. Sara dumps him, so he tries to use his discovery to win her back; unfortunately, the mischievous flubber seems to have a mind of its own…

The Boxtrolls Next up is 2014 hit, The Boxtrolls. A family movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman”, we are introduced to a new breed of family - The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who take us on a whirlwind adventure! Eggs, an orphan, lives with the Boxtrolls, who inhabit a cavern beneath the city of Cheesebridge. When villainous Archibald Snatcher hatches a plan to get rid of the pretty harmless beings, Eggs decides to go above ground, where he meets and befriends feisty Winnifred. Together, Eggs and Winnifred devise a daring plan to save the Boxtrolls from extermination…

Frozen To finish off the Season, we invite audiences to join us for Disney’s 2013 mega-hit, Frozen, and what better movie to end on! Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen”, Frozen takes us on an icy, magical adventure. When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, fearless Anna joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna’s sister, Snow Queen Elsa, and break her icy spell. Although their epic journey leads them to encounters with mystical trolls, a comedic snowman, harsh conditions, and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff bravely push onward in a race to save their kingdom from winter’s cold grip.

This August, following on from the success of our first run of films in 2014, New Diorama Theatre are teaming up with the lovely people at British Land’s Regent’s Place campus to present a Summer Cinema. Throughout August we’ll be showing four brilliant family films on the big screen at Regent’s Place Plaza for all of our local residents to enjoy (just down the road from New Diorama Theatre – see map at back of brochure for details). And the best thing about all of this? Firstly, it’s totally free of charge for everyone to attend and watch the films – just turn up on the day and enjoy with no need to book. And secondly, the films start at a perfect time for family audiences! So why not come down, grab a colourful deck chair, perhaps bring a picnic or some popcorn, and join us at the movies! In response to anonymous interviews with serving officers and those affected by the force, Silent Uproar with playwright Alex Oates (previous work includes Silk Road the Play) bring a dark comedy with live music that looks at how the world either side of the thin blue line isn’t black and white, just many shades of grey. Hours of e-forms, stolen gnomes, fractured skulls; another day in the war on crime gone mad. DOG SHOW The Hong Kong Dog Serial Killer’s been at large since the late 1980s. Nobody knows what drives them to leave poison-laced meat on popular dog-walking routes – but they’ve been killing strangers’ pets for more than twenty years. In DOG SHOW, Kandinsky transposes this bizarre mystery to London, to explore the strange life of dogs in a city home to more than 200,000 of them. Part-silent film, part-thriller, DOG SHOW considers what man’s best friend has to tell us about love and loneliness, the city and the wild – and what it means to be human.

SHOOTING WITH LIGHT Since the invention of photography we have collectively taken over 3.5 trillion photographs. Total Theatre Award nominated Idle Motion search within these snapshots to expose one of the most remarkable untold stories of our age. It is 1933 and a young German refugee flees to Paris, reinventing herself as Gerda Taro. Discovering the wonder of photography, she falls in love with a fellow refugee who teaches her, ‘if your pictures aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough’. Together they venture to the Spanish Civil War and capture the tyranny of fascism. As pioneers of frontline photo journalism, he would go on to receive international recognition as the iconic war photographer Robert Capa – she would be forgotten. Using innovative staging, physicality and multimedia, internationally renowned company Idle Motion piece together the life of an exceptional woman, glimpsed through the lost photographs she risked her life to take.

SUSPENSE FESTIVAL 2015 suspense is a London-wide festival of puppetry for older audiences. B’s got some memories he wants to share with you. He wants to tell you about how he ended up on a cruise ship, playing chess against the current world chess champion. He wants to tell you all about his life and the choices he’s made. The problem? He’s been split into four and can’t remember what happened. THE CANTERBURY TALES Expect tales of love, lust, murder and mayhem as Impulse Collective bring their mischievous storytelling style to THE CANTERBURY TALES. A contemporary take on a 14th century classic, join the five performers on a journey from Southwalk to Canterbury as they deliver their own anarchic twist on stories such as The Miller’s Tale, The Knight’s Tale, The Wife of Bath and many more. Using a fast paced mix of physical theatre, live music and verbatim, THE CANTERBURY TALES switches seamlessly between moments of laughout-loud silliness and serious questions about the extent to which society has really moved on since the time of Chaucer’s writing. Impulse Collective have adapted the text to suit a modern audience, but fans of Chaucer’s writing will find much to love in a whistle-stop tour through the stories.

When the stunning Scarlett Addison walks in, Sam is thrown headlong into a shadowy world of murder, corruption and double crosses. A man’s gone missing, electricity blackouts are more frequent than a loser at a blackjack table and the city’s in chaos. From LA’s dark streets to decadent hillside mansions, the deeper Sam digs the dirtier his hands get, until he discovers the true meaning of being a good guy in a bad world.

DOWN & OUT IN PARIS AND LONDON Having survived Eton, young George Orwell disappears into the underworld of 1920s Paris in search for something to write about. Meanwhile, a modern-day journalist goes undercover on a London council estate at the turn of the millennium. Multi-award winning New Diorama and PIT transfer their brand new show back to London after its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015. A new, modern satire inspired by Orwell’s autobiographical tale and combined with Polly Toynbee’s 2003 book Hard Work, this production is written and directed by New Diorama Theatre’s Artistic & Executive Director, David Byrne. Winners of Writers’ Guild and List Magazine Award for Drama, and Les Enfants Terribles prize 2013.

Hiring the Theatre New Diorama Theatre is a versatile space which can be tailored to suit a variety of different events. With a range of seating configurations (maximum seated capacity of 81) our team are here to style your event to your specific requirements. Perfect for product launches, seminars, conferences and film screenings, the theatre space also comes equipped with a projector and theatre-style lighting. The seating is also fully retractable, providing a great space for rehearsals and workshops.

Your Visit The New Diorama Theatre Box Office is open an hour before each performance for audience members to collect their tickets. All tickets ordered over the telephone and on the internet are held by the Box Office and are available to pick up in person before each show. At the box office you can also purchase tickets for future performances.
The ND Café & Bar is open from 7.30am Monday– Friday (and an hour before each performance at weekends) serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and other light snacks New Diorama Theatre is located in Regent’s Place, just off Regent’s Park. Regent’s Place is a pedestrian campus, that is well-lit and features many pieces of public art - including works by Anthony Gormley and Julian Opie - as well as bars and restaurants. Ticket Info & Access For shows where a concessionary price is offered, we extend these tickets to anyone who is “unwaged”, those audience members who are full time students, unemployed, retired or children. We also offer concessionary priced tickets to full time carers who visit with disabled patrons.
