I remember sitting down four years ago and writing my first article for the Black Diamond newsletter. Escalante had just acquired the club and I was trying to meet with as many members as possible and also getting to know our team. It seems like yesterday, but so much has happened in those four years. I want to thank again all the members who so graciously welcomed me into your homes and made me feel like a part of the community. Black Diamond is a special place and I am proud to be part of its history. It is truly one of the best golf communities in the country and has a very bright future. Leaving a place you love is never an easy decision, but Nancy and I are both excited about the opportunity at Haig Point. We are keeping our house here so you will be seeing us around when we have a chance to come back. We have already started the process of identifying my replacement and I am working closely with the team to make sure there is a smooth transition. I hope that you give the new general manager the same opportunity to succeed as you did with me. As I said in my letter to the members, I am leaving a place I love, members I love and a company that I love. Best wishes to each of you and I look forward to seeing you up in South Carolina or back here at Black Diamond. Sincerely,
Doug and Nancy Egly

Membership and Real Estate Corner
Over the past several months, real estate traffic in the Welcome Center has picked up substantially. We have held a number of open houses and realtor events which has created more interest in the community and people coming through the gates. In the past, we held keys at the Welcome Center for vendors, contractors, real estate agents, etc. In an effort to increase your security in the community, we have made the decision to discontinue this key service at the Welcome Center. For homes that are for sale, we will be working with the owners to have lock boxes on their property so that owners and real estate agents will have controlled and secure access to these homes, as opposed to coming to the Welcome Center and picking up multiple sets of keys. Supra Lockbox’s with Bluetooth technology are the industry standard for Realtors nationwide. Beginning March 1, you will need to coordinate with vendors or contractors individually to gain access to your home. We want to ensure the safety of Black Diamond and eliminate the possibility that keys may be taken off property. Thank you for your consideration. If you have left a key with us, please come by the Welcome Center by March 1 and collect your keys. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 352-746-7400.

A Message from Matt DiMase Director of Golf Course Maintenance Attention Members: We continue to remain focused on our Arbor Care program which includes tree trimming and removal. We select our areas of concern during the winter months because the days are shorter and we get a better idea on what little sun light is provided where. Not to mention, in areas where we do not over seed, specifically in relation to greens, we need to make sure we have as much sun as possible during the winter months. We also have areas mapped out to complete the tree care process into the spring and summer. What we do this time of the year will pay off come spring when temperatures begin to rise. That leads me into the state of Ranch #9 green. Many of you know that green has not performed like any of the other 55 greens at Black Diamond. I have had many theories regarding that green; I have conducted many tests, yet I always felt that green suffered from a lack of sunlight and poor drainage. What we found in the recent weeks through a variety of testing and advanced technology is that Ranch #9 is in fact free of any turf disease, but has a significant drainage problem dating back to construction. We were able to see the actual drains through a scope and the drain pipes themselves are turned sideways and free and clear of any water. In fact, the drains actually had spider webs formed in them. This should not be the case for drain pipes that are 20 years old. This confirms there is a filtration/drainage issue in the first 18 inches of the profile. We are conducting one last and final test known as an ISTRC test to check the filtration rate and porosity of the soil profile. In the mean time, we will continue to spike and needle tine the green. We are doing our best to provide an adequate putting surface despite the aesthetic appearance of Ranch #9. I appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience in regards to Ranch #9 and we will have the condition rectified and corrected in the near future.

T ip of the Month:
The fitness tip of the month is on bone health. New research shows that by incorporating a weight training program into your lifestyle you can maintain and increase your muscle strength, along with a number of other benefits to your health and well-being. Plus, you can achieve this with as few as two strength training sessions each week. Strength training also reduces the amount of pain and increases the range of motion for people with arthritis. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Miriam E. Nelson PHD, and her colleagues at Tufts University found that regular strength training not only stopped bone loss but also strengthened bone mass by 1 percent during the year of the study. A bone’s strength tends to reflect that of the muscles attached to it. Exercise stimulates bone tissue to deposit more of the mineral salts that lend strength to those bones. At the same time, muscle movement causes stress and tension on the bone, which seems to trigger small electrical currents that tell the bone to repair and regenerate. Therefore, as you build muscle you build bone. If you don’t already work out with weights, add strength training to your routine. You will feel the results.
See you at the Fitness Center — Mary

A Message from Bryan Richard, Director of Golf The 12th Annual Black Diamond Foundation Pro-Am has come and gone and we have crowned a new Champion for both the team event and the Professional event. The team of General Manager Doug Egly, along with Black Diamond members Laura Monea, Dorothy Brice and Jennifer Polich came out with a three stroke victory with a tournament score of 21 under par, 123. The Professional division saw a new competitor to the event, Mike Van Sickle, take the low-pro honors with a 6-under par 66 for a single stroke victory over Roger Rowland and Black Diamond’s Jeff Seavey. We would like to thank all who contributed and for making the event this year a tremendous success.
Looking forward, Couples’ Member-Guest is right around the corner and invitations have gone out via email a couple of weeks ago. This year we have provided two different links with tournament information. The first link will provide all members with the tournament format, schedule of events and all other areas pertaining to the tournament. The second link is the tournament registration form. This year we once again hosted the Florida Challenge, which brings together women’s golf teams from the University of South Florida, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Miami and Florida International University to compete for the Florida Challenge Trophy. This year we had a tie between USF and Miami after 36 holes of competition, and a playoff took place on hole number 9 of the Quarry to determine the victor. Miami came out on top with a single shot victory in the sudden death playoff to be crowned Champions.

Black Diamond Foundation A Heartfelt Thank You!!! The Black Diamond Foundation Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped make our 12th Annual Pro-Am Golf Tournament a tremendous success. The tournament is a major fundraiser for the Foundation, and it could not happen without all those who lend a helping hand. The current estimate reflects the tournament will net a profit of roughly $55,000 this year. That certainly goes a long way in allowing the Foundation to help those in need throughout Citrus County. First on our “thank you list” are the 27+ volunteers who man the registration tables, assist on the golf course, serve as spotters, cook hot dogs, and serve beverages. Many of our volunteers have pitched in year after year. Their dedication is amazing, and they truly make the day work. Special thanks also go to our Title Sponsor, Crystal Automotive, the Hole Sponsors, and the various businesses that provided prizes and special on-course treats for the golfers, such as ice cream, brownies, cookies, jumbo shrimp, and hot dogs.
A big thank you goes to Escalante Golf, and its professional staff in the Pro Shop, Golf Maintenance Facility, and Clubhouse. The Quarry Course is always immaculately prepared for this special event, and our Director of Golf and his team truly goes the extra mile to help us ensure we have the right number of golf pros available to complete each foursome. Chef Kenny and the Club staff put out a great breakfast spread, creating a warm welcome for the many visitors who come to Black Diamond to play in this event. We thank the participants who “give back” to our local community via their tournament entry fees. A very special shout out this year goes to Dave Veracka, the winner of the Poker Run, who donated his $1,000 winnings back to the Foundation. And finally, thanks to all the golf professionals whose donation of time and talent allow this event to take place.
A Message from Chris Smilgin, Club Manager We have said our goodbyes to 2014 and moving quickly into 2015. I have posted some pictures of the New Year Eve’s Party. For February we will have a Sweetheart Dinner with a live band. The menu will be posted from Chef Kenny on our website and on the Black Diamond Network, Channel 95. There are a lot of events going on with golf, dance classes, music events, private functions and member requests. Please see myself, or Emma Bradley, if you have any needs for a meeting, event or party here at the clubhouse or your home. See you at the Clubhouse.
