What a great time to be at Black Diamond! The weather is perfect, the courses are in terrific shape and there are some great events coming up. I have to say what a pleasure it was attending the annual Christmas Chorale. My musical talents are severely limited, but I was so impressed with the professionalism and talents of our members. Many thanks to everyone who made the Chorale such a success and we are all looking forward to next year’s concert. We have received numerous compliments about our recent community event. It was great getting all the members and residents together to “Turn the Page” and start a new chapter at Black Diamond. We had several goals for the event, but, most importantly, we wanted to bring the community together. I want take a moment to thank everyone who was involved in making it a success, but most especially, Merideth Rossetti and her team. So many details went into the event, from entertainment, transportation, name tags, fire pits, etc. I think one of the highlights of the evening was lighting the Quarry. It certainly is as beautiful at night as it is during the day. My entire team worked tireless to make the event a success and I want to thank them for all their hard work. Looking ahead, we have a very busy schedule of member events including the Men’s Member-Guest on March 28th – 30th and the Ladies’ Member-Guest on April 18th – 20th. These will both be special events with a few new surprises.

I would encourage you to bring your friends and family and show off Black Diamond. We have new inventory coming into the Golf Shop and have a number of demo days scheduled in the near future. Also, we are starting to get some prospective members looking at Black Diamond and would ask if you see a new face that you introduce yourself and welcome them to the club. I hope everyone had a terrific holiday season whether you were here at Black Diamond or traveling to visit family and friends. We all look forward to a wonderful 2012!

Welcome New Black Diamond Members

Happy New Year! Like any “New Year,” 2012 will be significant to people for a wide variety of reasons. But this year holds particular significance to golfers, as it represents the quadrennial revise of the Rules of Golf. In an effort to be faithful to the games principles while maintaining relevance to today’s game, the USGA and the R&A regularly review The Rules of Golf. The Rules of Golf we recognize today have roots all the way back to The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in 1744. Their original set of rules (13 in all) were adopted by the R&A around 1754 and went on to become the basis for the first set of rules drawn up by the USGA when it was founded in 1894. It was not until 1951 that the R&A and USGA worked co-operatively to produce the uniform set of rules of golf we essentially know today. The 2012 revision includes one change in the Definitions (Addressing the Ball), seven to the rules themselves and the addition of a new Appendix IV

to prescribe general regulations for the design of devices and other equipment, such as tees, gloves and distance measuring devices. You can log on to www.usga.org for the official publication of principle changes for 2012, and while you’re there be sure to spend some time perusing the entire site. The USGA web site contains tons of great information on a wide variety of golf topics – not just The Rules of Golf. While we’re on the topic of the “Rules of Golf ” and the New Year, it may also be appropriate to think about some new year’s “golf ” resolutions. Consider the current state of your golf game. Are you devoting a portion of your golf time to practice? There is no doubt that some people love to practice, and others hate to practice; but it is undeniable that practice is an integral part of maintaining and improving your performance. If you love to practice, be sure you are spending your time efficiently. Are you engaged in the activity? Are you practicing with attention and intention to the task? Aside from a poor use of time, sloppy practice can lead to sloppy play. And if you hate to practice, try to determine why. Is it because

you don’t know what to work on or how to organize your efforts? What ever the case may be, Rick can help you with some great practice games and exercises to make practice more compelling and enjoyable. After all that talk about golf rules and practice, you should be ready to start filling in your tournament schedule for 2012. First up be sure to take a little time to check out the junior golfers Saturday January 14th and Sunday January 15th as Black Diamond hosts the Future Collegiate World Tour. There’s nothing like watching youthful exuberance to help get you fired up to play some great golf yourself. From the Black Diamond Foundation Tournament January 25th through the Club Championship and Match Play in February, Couples Member Guest, Rider Cup and Men’s Member-Guest in March and Ladies Member-Guest in April; there certainly is no lack of opportunities to test your skill. Be sure to pick up a complete list of tournaments and events in the golf shop. Oh yeah, and while you’re there you can purchase a copy of the 2012 Rules of Golf.

Golf News JAY MULLEN

Director of Golf Course Operations

Winter in Florida! I love this time of year because we are blessed to live in a part of the country that is not covered in snow. Of course, putting up the Christmas lights while wearing shorts can seem a little odd, but it sure beats shoveling snow. Thus far we have had only one frost delay, but I am sure more are on the way. We could actually benefit from some cooler weather to help the Bermuda grass go dormant and encourage growth of the overseeded Rye. As warm as it has been, the Bermuda grass is still trying to grow which creates some competition with the Rye. There are some thin and inconsistent areas where the Rye has not fully come in, but we will resolve this with a light seed dusting and some cooler weather. Overall, I am pleased with the courses and the greens are all rolling very well. The Ranch greens are still slightly behind the others, but they should be in very good condition by the time this newsletter is published. We have a number of ongoing projects that we will complete through the winter. Thank you for the many positive comments about our tree trimming project. The visual impact of lifting the canopies of certain trees is tremendous. As always, please let me know if I can be of assistance. My family and I are looking forward to a terrific Christmas. My oldest daughter, Sydney, is 2 1/2, and this will be our first Christmas with our baby, Zoey, who is 10 months old. I hope each of you have a terrific holiday season and I look forward to seeing you on the course.

Black Diamond Jr. Volunteer Corps 2011

It’s been another busy year for us, the Black Diamond Jr. Volunteer Corps (BDJVC). We have enjoyed helping others and keeping our community clean. January started it off with our commitment to “Adopt A Highway.” Our 2 mile stretch of street cleaning is Pine Ridge Blvd. off of Norvell Bryant. No worries, we wear neon orange vests and clearly display a sign, of the same hue, way before we begin our clean-up. In October we cleaned our road once again. This year has been VERY special because we helped launch a 5k Run/1 mile Walk fundraiser for “Blessings in a Backpack” in April. Altogether we raised over $20,000. Needless to say, we are very proud of this accomplishment! This money will help put food in elementary school kids backpacks to eat over the weekend. These kids go hungry over the weekends when they are not at school to eat school breakfast or lunch. Thank you to everyone that helped us with this huge 5k project. To all the residents, employees of Black Diamond, business owners, friends and the Black Diamond Foundation that believed in us, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! We continue to pack backpacks for the program once a month, the 4th Wednesday, while school is in session. It is a challenge because we all have different schedules and extracurricular activities but we manage. We hold a brief monthly meeting right after we pack because it’s a school night and everyone has homework to finish. In May we volunteered with the food drive that several food recovery organizations participate in along with the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers). This year we volunteered at the Family Resource Center.

In September we did a peanut butter drive around here were we live to benefit the kids on the Blessings program. We collected 380 lbs!! Thank you! November 13th we joined many at the club house for the Arts and Craft sale. We sold baked goods for human and canine consumption. The doggie treats were a BIG hit!! We raised $315.00! Later that week we joined members of the Black Diamond Foundation, for the third year in a row, to pack thousands of dinner boxes for the Thanksgiving Alliance. They help bring Thanksgiving dinners to needy families in Citrus County. It’s been a busy year indeed, and it has all been worth it! Soon we will be out for the holiday break and many of us will volunteer at the Family Resource Center to wrap Christmas presents for children. Last year there were so many of us there to pack we took up the entire gift wrapping room! It’s a great way to end the year! What is in the future for BDJVC? The 2nd Blessings in a Backpack 5k Run/1 mile Walk on February 25th! Sending Care packages to soldiers abroad, and volunteering at an animal shelter, are just a few. Thank you to Mrs. Pratt, our BDF liaison, and all its members for your support, all our parents who some how come together to get us from here to there. Thank you Andrea delaCruz (LHS sophomore) for our Facebook page! Our newest member Caroline Damron, welcome!! Valerie Anderson, BDJVC VP (LHS Jr) Welcome new members that are in Middle schoolHigh school, please email us at BDJVC@live.com. page 7

Louie Zamperini was one of the greatest runners that America has ever seen. As he was getting ready for the 1940 Olympics in Berlin, World War II started. Louie joined the Army Air Corps flying over the Pacific until the engines on his bomber failed and he was stranded on a tiny raft surrounded by sharks for weeks ultimately ending in Japan’s brutal POW camps. The book club will be discussing the life of Louie Zamperini as told by Laura Hillenbrand in “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” on Thursday, January 19th at 4 pm. Future selections include Ann Pachetts “The State of Wonder” on February 16th and “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot on March 15th. Contact Faeth Houle for questions.
