Dear Black Diamond Members: March is here and while the rest of the country is suffering through one of the worst winters in history, we are enjoying some incredible golf and mild temperatures. The club is bustling with activity and it is great to have everyone here. While we have not had the greatest weather, it certainly beats shoveling snow every morning! I am very happy to announce the members on our new Advisory Committee. I would like to thank everyone for speaking with me about the Board, its purpose and what we hope to accomplish. The members who will serve on this committee are: Lisa Bishop, Dean Carhoun, Jim Filby, Ron Green, Kent Rinker, Dr. Marie Salvio, and Bob Savard. This Board will be instrumental in providing us with feedback and guidance from the membership as a whole. It will serve as a sounding board to bounce ideas and suggestions to help make Black Diamond the club everyone wants it to be. One of the first tasks for the new Board is to come up with new rules and regulations for the clubhouse and golf course. This board will be a work in progress and we are excited about working with them. I would like to give everyone a quick update on our real estate sales and membership campaign. Traffic at the welcome center has increased significantly since the new signage went
up at the entrance of the community. We have made a concerted effort to reach out to the local realtor community to give them accurate information on real estate opportunities, both existing inventory and new construction, within the gates. Thus far, these efforts are starting to pay off. We are now seeing more than a dozen walk-ins a week compared to only two prior to these efforts. We have closed three sales and have four pending. Two closings include new members through transfers and one new Full Golf member. Of the four pending, we will have one membership transfer, a social member and another Full Golf member by the end of this month. The fourth already has a membership and is purchasing a second home. You will be happy to know that these new members will trigger our first refund of an existing member. The new membership plan is being very well received and should help us bring new members and sell both new and existing real estate inventory. We are all looking forward to an outstanding March with all the member events planned, especially the Rider Cup event which is the club’s #1 event for the entire year. I want to personally thank Mr. & Mr. John Cushing for putting this event on year after year. They will be missed dearly at this year’s event. See you at the club, Doug

A Message from Bryan Richard, Director of Golf
Where has the time gone….it is hard to believe that we have reached March already. The past 2 months have been filled with great events and a wonderful Black Diamond Foundation Pro-Am Tournament and Fundraiser. The 11th Annual Pro-Am was a tremendous success due in large part to our numerous volunteers, our sponsors, and all of the gracious Black Diamond members. Thanks for your continued support of this event and we look forward to another spectacular event next year.
Our Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championship took place this past month and we are much honored to have four new champions this year. Carl Nanni was the winner of the Men’s Championship for a 3rd time defeating a strong field and edging out our 2012 Champion, Michael Zatzman, with a strong finish on the final round. Debbie MookSang won her 1st Black Diamond Club Championship with a great final round score of 79 to comeback from a two-shot deficit to finish with a 7-shot victory over 2011 Champion, Laura Monea. Our low nets Champions this year go out to Ed Shurly, who was the only competitor with 3-subpar net scores during the tournament and Joan Beasley who edged out Mary Ann Easton by only one shot. Great playing to all of our players and a special Thank You to all of you for supporting the Club with your participation in this event.

A Message from Matt DiMase Director of Golf Course Maintenance Attention Members: As we head into March, I would like to ask for assistance from members in repairing ball marks on the greens as well as using sand to fill divots throughout fairways/rough/tees. The Bermuda grass is beginning to “green up” and grow, however we have a lot of ball marks that are going unrepaired. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Certain members feel that our irrigation system has run non-stop day in and day out, but that is false. We have had record rainfall every month going all the way back to November. Not to mention several days of heavy fog and little to no sunlight in most of January and beginning of February. When we take days to dry out in the summer months with full sun and warmer temperatures, we are taking even longer in the winter with short days of sunlight and cooler temperatures. This has lead to moisture being held in low-lying/drain areas, and the Quarry Holes. We have also had several problematic greens and select areas on greens decline and have treated those greens accordingly. Examples are Ranch #4 back slope, Ranch #9, Select Perimeters on Ranch #13, Ranch #14, and back of Quarry #17. Many members also feel that weather is being used as an excuse for the conditions, but it is not. The weather is the biggest variable battled day in and day out by a Superintendent. We have many micro-climates throughout this property and we use various tools and training to try our best to manage them accordingly. We are working diligently upon improving several weak areas and expect a full recovery soon. We have a full growing season with the greens and will have no transition issues in areas where they had been historically bad. Also, we have completed all our herbicide applications in February and will be retreating where necessary in March. Thank you, Matt DiMase

A Note from BDLGA President Nancy Carey
Well here we are coming up on St. Patrick’s Day and the wearin’ o’ the green...quite literally as spring starts blossoming out all around us at Black Diamond. And we are sooooo glad to see the sun! In addition to our Black Diamond St. Patrick’s Day Tournament, I’m sure you are all aware that this month features four of our Special tournaments: Couples Member-Guest, Rider Cup, Mens’ Member-Guest and BDLGA’s C4 (Conquering Cancer in Citrus County). All of these are traditionally hugely supported. It is amazing how much hard work and long hours go into the organization of these major events. We can all really appreciate seeing these efforts pay off with such successful stagings as they reflect so well on our Black Diamond Community. I sincerely hope you are able to participate in all of them!

A WORD FROM BLACK DIAMOND PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION We have CHANGES at the Architectural Review Board (ARB)! More members on the ARB Faster approvals Support and consultation Fees only for new construction and additions 3 paint color schemes will soon be approved for all village homes What do we do and why are we here? The Architectural Review Board is a group of people from your neighborhood who volunteer their time to help ensure this community continues to thrive and grow in a consistent, quality way. Our mission statement is “To promote high quality, well maintained homes blending with the natural surroundings for the purpose of enhancing the values of all properties in Black Diamond while fostering cooperation and collaboration with the community at large.” ARB review of improvement plans for compliance with your ARB Guidelines protects all property owners and helps maintain property values. Who are we and when do we meet? The ARB will be increasing its number to seven members. This will allow us to assemble a quorum more easily. We will meet more often so that we may promptly review your proposed changes to the exterior of your homes. We are pleased to announce the new board for 2014 consisting of five full time residents and two part time: Don Hasek, Chair, Dave Miklavcic, Escalante Construction Mgr, Susan Savard, Mary Jane Bower and Dawn Hertz. The two new members will be announced shortly. We meet on the second and fourth (approvals only) Wednesdays of the month in order to afford more timely approvals. The meetings are open and homeowners are welcome. When do you need approval from the ARB? Any work done on the outside of your house must first have approval from the ARB. This includes new construction, additions, new roofing, RE-paint, landscaping, lighting, mailboxes, well partitions, tree removal, sidewalks, planters and the like. All homeowners need to have a signed approval letter from the ARB prior to the commencement of work whether the work is done by you or a contractor. We have communicated to contractors that commencing improvements without ARB approval may result in a ban on their entry into Black Diamond. If you have any doubt about ARB approval, call the POA manager at 352-465-6933. We are there to help. To maintain a community that is attractive and up to date it is essential that we all work together to create and maintain the exteriors of our homes in a consistent fashion. What do you need to include in your application? We want the application process to be easy. You can get an application form and ARB Guidelines from the POA website or pick one up at the Welcome Center. You will need to include exact product specifications and samples of construction materials as requested (i.e. brick pavers, ROCK SAMPLES) if possible. Landscaping plans must include a clear drawing with types and sizes of plants. The more information you give us the better. Pictures of your site and proposed changes help us make a quicker decision! An example of an acceptable landscape plan submission will now be included in the ARB application packet to help you. Completed applications should be submitted at the Welcome Center and can be given to POA manager, Jennifer Stauff. They will be considered by the ARB within 2 weeks. We are committed to working with Black Diamond residents to maintain a fresh up to date look for our community. In the last year with member input we approved the installation of metal roofs in two villages that look like tile but weigh less and require little or no maintenance. We welcome your input. We also are willing to share our knowledge on issues surrounding modifications to Black Diamond properties. We look forward to working with the community.

The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd follows their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship.
