Attention Members: Fall is here and over-seed is just about complete. We have the Highlands, Diamond Dunes, and the Driving Range left to over-seed. We will complete those areas the 2nd week of November. I wanted to let everyone know when we over-seed, we will generally put the “first-cut” on the course 12-18 days after seed is down. Why that time frame? Generally seed takes 3-5 days to “pop” - that is when the seed swells, splits, begins to root - hence the phrase “pop.” After the seed pops we monitor the water and make sure the seed stays moist and does not dry out. At that point the grass will grow and fill in. It is very important to be patient enough to make sure the seed is mature to withstand the mowers and not get pulled out of the ground. Depending on growing conditions you can mow as early as 12 days and usually no later then 18 days. Another topic involving over-seed is “why aren’t the roughs on the Highlands and the Ranch being over-seeded?” The explanation is below and hopefully answers that question.
We are not over-seeding the rough on the Ranch or HL for the following reasons:
1. We are using multiple herbicides to clean up the rough as much as possible We are spraying both a post-emergent and pre-emergent that will clean up the Ranch and Highland Courses. Unfortunately you cannot over-seed with those herbicides in the soil. 2. Since we decided not to over-seeding the rough, we chose these herbicides due to the success rate of weed population reduction - however the rye grass has no chance to grow at this point. 3. We also just completed a fertilizer application 2-2 weeks ago to keep pushing Bermuda growth. We will continue to fertilize the rough throughout the winter.
Ultimately the goal by doing this is to clean up the rough and get healthy turf.
The last and most important variable that many members do not realize is the irrigation system design. If you look at the rough now and again during the summer, we have a lot of areas that the sprinkler heads do not reach. A good example is the left side of 18 Ranch, so even if we were to over-seed, we would have a hard time growing seed due to the lack of irrigation to get the seed established. Another area is left rough of Ranch 15. Highlands right side of 1 is another example of poor irrigation coverage. There are many, those are just a few that stand out. Toro Irrigation Specialist did come out and inspect our system and we are currently working on a long-term plan to update and retro fit heads, pipes, and tubes. We have already begun on some chronic areas and are seeing healthier turf as a result. Lastly, I would like to welcome back those members who have traveled down here over the past few weeks and I would also like to acknowledge the members who were here throughout the summer and say thank you for your cooperation while we conducted multiple projects to enhance the golf courses and improve turf conditions. Black Diamond Foundation Kicks Off a New Season of Activities As many of our residents return from cooler climates, the Black Diamond Foundation Board of Governors will resume monthly meetings on November 4th, at 2pm in the Clubhouse Board Room. Black Diamond Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to “Make a Difference” in Citrus County by inspiring donors, building partnerships and mobilizing resources to support community needs. The Foundation’s efforts are directed solely to help our fellow Citrus County residents, and focus on education, family assistance, youth activities, hunger and homelessness, Veterans’ assistance, fire/rescue services, and disaster relief. Over the past 10 years, Black Diamond Foundation has raised and distributed over $1,000,000 in community grants to local charities and organizations. A recent example of how Black Diamond Foundation “makes a difference” in the community was the award of a community grant for $1750 to the Path of Citrus County to repair its freezer unit. The Path is well-known for its efforts in fighting hunger and homelessness
in Citrus County. It also provides temporary food storage for the Thanksgiving Feeding Alliance, which provides healthy food to countless low-income Citrus County families during the holiday season. Your contributions to Black Diamond Foundation truly help provide focused funding to those in need within our community, and the local charitable organizations that strive to help them. Black Diamond Foundation’s largest, single fundraising initiative is its yearly Pro-Am Golf Tournament. Mark your calendars - the 11th annual event is scheduled for January 21, 2014! We’ll continue to use this column throughout the winter and spring to tell you how your generosity impacts our local community and improves the lives of local residents. Black Diamond residents are always welcome to attend Foundation Board meetings, normally the first Monday of each month between October and May, in the Club Boardroom. Meetings start at 2pm in October, November and December; and at 4pm from January through May.
A Message from Brad T. Reid, Club Manager Welcome to November & welcome back to the northerners. It’s GREAT to see the club getting busier and busier. As we continue to adjust to “new” things here at The Clubhouse, we are always thinking of new ways that we can better our services to you. Tuesday nights are now busier than I can remember as we are moving into our next season together. I want to assure you that I will listen to all suggestions and look forward to hearing some responses on some of the new things coming down the path. Black Diamond Wine Society continues to evolve as well. I hope you all have noticed the new wine selections and specific attention to the pricing. Membership has it’s privileges! We WILL BE OPEN ON A SATURDAY this month as well! The Clubhouse will be featuring Chef Tufo’s Pizza Bar that was a hit over the summer on November 16th, let’s see how many people we can get in this clubhouse on a Saturday night! Casually hang out with friends, eat many different types of pizza, salad, and don’t forget the wine ..... we will be featuring some of our favorite Italian wines so I look forward to seeing many bottles around the room as we all can try something new and enjoy. The dinner will be featuring South African wines and cuisine, what do you think Kenny will do? Should we dive into the jungle and try some new interesting foods paired with world class wines? Sounds like fun! See you at The Clubhouse! Page 5
