Meet One of Your Scholarship Winners In previous columns, Black Diamond Foundation has described many of the programs and projects that your generous donations make possible. Education, and children and families are two favored areas. This month, we’re pleased to introduce Chef Ben DeFazio, who is a staff member in Black Diamond’s fine kitchen. Ben is a recent graduate of the culinary arts program at Withlacoochee Technical Institute, where he received a Foundation scholarship – and where he studied under Chef Bob Anderson, a former Executive Chef at Black Diamond Club. Ben’s life is one of family, food and accomplishment. On his mother’s side, he can trace his heritage to John Adams. His grandfather told him that hard work will bring happiness, and Ben recalls spending hours in the garden at his grandparents’ home. Those fresh flavors and beautiful food shaped his passion for food. Ben started at WTI with his parents’ support, but his 99.8% average after the first semester helped him obtain a scholarship sponsored by Nature Coast Restaurants. Following his second semester, he applied for a Black Diamond Foundation scholarship, and worked on his five-page letter of application for a month. That award paid 80% of his tuition. Ben graduated with a 3.6 gpa, and with 2300 hours. He met Chef Rich Crisanti at an American Culinary Federation event, and started working part-time in the Black Diamond kitchen in July 2009, when he was still in school. WTI recognized that employment in a “program related job.” Ben has been a full-time employee for almost a year. In 2010, he was named “Employee of the Year.” Ben loves working with Chef Victor at Black Diamond, whose enthusiastic personality and skill fosters a sense of camaraderie. Ben feels his fellow kitchen staff and dining room staff are his second family, and he feels privileged to work in “this beautiful, beautiful place.” Ben wants to be the best, and is thriving in this environment of expectations and encouragement. “It’s perfect.” He believes he owes much to Black Diamond Foundation and Black Diamond Club – opportunities, support, recognition. And, Ben returns his good fortune to the community. He supports Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and has cooked for charity functions. He feels privileged to be an American, living in this great country. And with a name like “DeFazio,” he’s working in the perfect golf course community! page 4

Employee of the Month Mary Moore from the Dining Room Staff
Reading & Discussion Group On Thursday, June 16th at 4 pm “The Paris Wife: A Novel” by Paula McLain will be discussed by the Black Diamond Book Club. McLain takes on the task of telling us the story of Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemingway’s first wife as they fall in love and move to Paris where eventually their marriage begins to fall apart. Through Hadley’s eyes and plain-speaking voice, we see all of twenties Paris and the larger than life artists who
gather in the cafes drinking tea or champagne, travel to Pamplona Spain to see the running of the bulls, and spend winters in alpine chalets, and watch as the young Hemingway becomes the “Papa” of legend. For the third Thursday in July, the book club will be reading “Caleb’s Crossing: A Novel” by Geraldine Brooks. In 1665 Caleb, a Wampanoag on Martha’s Vineyard, became the first Native American
to graduate Harvard College. From a few details, Brooks rounds out the story of Caleb’s transition from an “intellectually impaired savage” to a Harvard graduate through the voice of the daughter of the island’s Calvinist minister who aches for the education her father wastes on her dull brother. Further readings will include “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. For more information contact Faeth Houle.
