JAY MULLEN Director of Golf Course Operations

I would like to start out by thanking all of you that have gone out of your way to compliment the conditions of the courses this past month. It has been very encouraging to hear we are providing conditions that meet and exceed your expectations. As Matt Pederson continues to do a great job on the Quarry, we have made some changes in the Superintendent positions on the other two courses. The Ranch Course will now be run by John Merkyl, and the Highlands Course Superintendent is now Bruce Chestnutt. The changes have shown immediate results by bringing in new energy, dedication, and attention to detail. I assure you that our crew, from top to bottom, is here to make this property the very best it can be, and will work diligently to continue to improve the overall conditions of the courses. The transition from Poa Trivialis back to Bermuda on the greens has been very smooth. I do not anticipate any decline in playability or aesthetics due to “checking out” of the overseed for the rest of spring. We have very healthy turf under the little bit of Triv that still remains. We do however, have more Rye grass on the fairways and tees than we would like for this time of the year. It was our decision to keep everything as green as possible throughout the month of April because of the amount of events that were scheduled. The extra water we were using allowed us to keep the courses green, but

Congratulations

it also kept the fairways and tees from transitioning at the pace we would prefer. You will most likely see a few brown, dry looking areas as we transition from Rye to the Bermuda. This is a common occurrence that should last a short period of time. The faster we get rid of the Rye, the healthier the Bermuda will be this summer. We are nearing the end of the busiest part of the year for golf, and heading into the busiest part of the year for course maintenance. This is the time when we spend our efforts keeping up with fast growing grass, ornamentals, and prepping the course for next season. For those of you who stay here all year, we apologize in advance for the cultural practices that disturb the playing conditions throughout the summer. They are necessary “evils” that allow us to continue to improve, and will help us achieve our goal of providing pristine playing conditions year after year. Our aerification schedule will stay similar to last years, starting with the Quarry course on May 31st. We will have 9 holes closed per week, leaving 36 open at all times. For those of you that will be heading up north for the summer, I wish you all a safe trip and I look forward to seeing you in the fall. And for the rest, I’ll see you on the course.

THANK YOU, Black Diamond! Bravo!! Your participation and support enabled us to raise a grand total of $10,652. Your generosity will positively impact the lives of many through both of these valuable programs. We enjoyed a beautiful golf course, fabulous weather and great scores! We had 21 ladies’ teams and 8 men’s teams as well as 9 additional contributors who were unable to play. A total of $580 was collected for prizes through the $45 registration fee and paid on a sliding scale to 3 men’s teams and 7 ladies’ teams , representing one-third of the field as per U.S.G.A. guidelines. First place in the ladies’ flight were Lisa Bishop, Pam Ford, Jeanette McCormick, and Lynn Michael. First gross in the men’s flight were John Bower, John Collick, Bob Ficke, and Kent Rinker. First net in the men’s flight was taken by Don Hasek , David Michael, Jim Bob Plunkett and Bob Savard. It was a good day in the Michael household! When the last putt was sunk, the total raised through the golf tournament for the Rally for the Cure was $2,480. We were joined by an additional 26 members and guests for lunch, the raffle and live auction. Many thanks to all the raffle donors, hole sponsors and other donors for their incredible support of this year’s Rally. The raffle raised $2,395, the live auction $2,600, Buy a Drive $312 and hole sponsorships $2,675. With the addition of other donations, we raised a total of $8,172 for the BDGLA Breast and Prostate Cancer Screening Project for Citrus County individuals through the services of the Family Resource Center. This is an increase of $1,086 from 2010! A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who made this special event possible. I would particularly like to thank Clare Rodes, Mary Laukka, Nancy Richards and all our Black Diamond artists for their contributions to the raffle and the production of our handpainted wine glasses. Hopefully these will be beautiful reminders to all our members to do those monthly checks and have those mammograms. Please remember that early detection saves lives!!
