CONGRATULATIONS

2010 LADIES’ SHOOTOUT

Celebrity Chef Night

Runner-up Joan Weaver and Champion, Eileen Jango

I want to thank all the Members who supported the first Celebrity Chef night. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work to make the menu work. I especially enjoyed working with Chef Victor on the preparation of the entrees, however I don’t plan on giving up my day job as some of you suggested. I wish Jim Houle well when he takes on the Celebrity Chef role and would ask for everyone to support him as you did me. Finally, someone asked me if I would be included to do it again. I replied that I would love to do it again in 2020! Thank you again, Ed Rogers

David Court, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Our overseeding procedures should be wrapping up with the back nine of the Ranch Course when this article is published. So far the weather has cooperated and the results of the Highlands Course have turned out great. I am anticipating the same results for the Quarry and the Ranch as long as the weather continues to be “Chamber of Commerce” perfect. The total success of the overseeding program will depend on golf play and the adherence to proper etiquette. By this, I mean filling of divots with the proper divot sand, repairing ball marks, and raking bunkers. Excuse me if I am getting repetitive, but it doesn’t hurt to mention this occasionally. In November, we will be visited by our wildflower experts again and adding to the inventory throughout the

courses. What flowers came up last spring should be more beautiful with the reseeding from the flowers, which died off and add seed to the ground. The wildflower program is part of a grant from the wildflower coop which offered to use Black Diamond in their research work on what works best in the golf course environment. As always, should you have any comments for golf maintenance that you would like to share with me, I am open for any discussion and will try to accommodate requests as long as they are in the best interest of the Club, and within the budgetary guidelines. I do hold safety meetings with the staff and bring up information that may pertain to the betterment of our Golf Course Maintenance operation. See you on the course.

Welcome

I want to particularly thank my general board and special committee chairs who did an excellent job in performing their duties. I want to thank the Executive Committee for their time and combined efforts in making us such a strong organization. The Black Diamond staff, including pro shop, course management, and clubhouse staff, all contributed to help make our weekly Tuesdays events go off, for the most part without a hitch (you can’t control the weather)!

It has been a very quick year as your President. We grew to 164 members which shows how supportive the Black Diamond ladies are for their organized golf. I think the men envy us our numbers!!

Black Diamond Paddlers Take to the Water The new paddle season begins with a paddle on Friday morning, November 5th. If the migrating birds are back, we will begin with Lake Rousseau on the Withlacoochee River west of Dunnellon. Two additional paddles are scheduled for Thursday, November 18th and Friday, December 3rd. Destinations will include Lake Panosoffkee, Ozello or another segment of the Withlacoochee River. The paddles take place in the mornings in November and December, in the afternoons in January and February and back to the mornings in March and April. Aardvark Florida’s Kayak Company in Crystal River will provide rental boats and Matt, an experienced kayaker and marine biologist, will serve as our guide. We will be offering two levels of paddles. The first level will be appropriate for all, including advanced

beginners. The second will consist of longer paddles that may require a car shuttle for more advanced paddlers. If you are new to kayaking, we ask that you take a two hour introductory lesson with Matt at Aardvark or at Kayaks and Beyond, also in Crystal River, before you join Black Diamond paddles. This is for your safety and comfort on the water. Matt and Susan would also like to invite everyone to a paddlers’ picnic in Wallace Brook Park in Inverness on Saturday, November 13th beginning at 9AM. Bring a chair, a picnic lunch and cookies to swap. Paddling is available on the lake, if you want to bring a kayak. Paddling announcements are sent out via email. If you haven’t received an email in October and would like to join the group, send a request to be placed on the list to susanhpratt@aol.com.
