FEATURES
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to the latest issue of Newell’s Cruise News dedicated entirely to cruising and a prelude to our forthcoming Cruise Show. You will find all the details of our forthcoming Show on pages 14 - 15. As you know from previous Newell’s Cruise News features, Newell’s TRAVEL has invested in the growing cruise industry. You will recall that Nick Pritchard joined us as our Cruise Manager, supported by 11 Cruise Ambassadors, one in each of our offices. Since October last year many of my staff have experienced life on board several ships courtesy of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruises, P&O, Saga, Cunard, AmaWaterways, Avalon and Celebrity Cruises. They have enjoyed ship visits and short familiarisation cruises giving them first-hand knowledge of the facilities afforded to guests whilst on board. This information has been passed on to their colleagues and in turn to our blossoming cruising clients. We have also worked closely with individual cruise companies who have held in-store days and presentations throughout the year. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, our Cruise Show head-line sponsor, have recently held presentations and cream teas in two venues so that all of our clients in Devon and Cornwall had an opportunity to participate. Saga Cruises have visited Tavistock, Saltash and Falmouth for in-store promotions and Star Clippers are holding a presentation and cream tea at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in September, so there’s been a lot going on. This Issue is full of information from cruise companies but don’t forget our own snippets of in-house news on pages 22 & 24.

f you are considering a river cruise, look no further than Avalon Waterways. I was extremely fortunate and excited to experience one of their amazing river cruises along the Danube at the end of April this year, a beautiful time to explore the wonderful cities and picturesque towns along the scenic river, from Budapest to Linz. After we were greeted at our arrival airport by our efficient tour manager, we began our itinerary in the stunning city of Budapest where we stayed overnight at the hotel Intercontinental. This gave us the opportunity that evening to become well acquainted with the other lovely guests that would be joining us on the river cruise. The next day we went on a brilliant tour of Budapest, where we saw the main sights of the city but there was also plenty of time to wander around at leisure. An extra treat from Avalon was a tour of the State Opera which included a short exclusive performance observed with some complimentary canapés and champagne. Later that day, we were taken to board our five star ship; the Avalon Impression which was definitely very impressive and elegantly unique. We were greeted by the professional crew in the marbled entrance, provided with hot towels and a beverage before heading to the pleasant lounge/bar area for a warm welcome introduction. Of course, everyone was eager to check into their staterooms and we were not disappointed. I stayed in a deluxe panoramic stateroom, which was extremely spacious with light, modern décor with a large stylish bathroom that exceeded my wildest expectations. The main feature of this stateroom is the wall to wall, ceiling to floor panoramic sliding doors and the extra comfortable beds (with various mattress and pillow options) which face outwards to ever changing glorious views, a very nice touch. 4

I was thrilled that the exquisite Avalon Impression would be home for the next week; with its efficient and friendly crew, delicious and plentiful cuisine, relaxed atmosphere and happy guests. Needless to say we were looked after exceedingly well during our tour on the Danube and you could be as active or as relaxed as you wished. Avalon ensured this by offering a range of various excursions in each of the incredible destinations from interesting guided tours and wine tasting to the rewarding views from Dracula’s castle after a good hike not to mention cycling through your favourite city or through a stunning valley surrounded by vineyards (at a pace that suits you). Thanks to Avalon Waterways I have some of the best memories and they are without a doubt my first thought when I think of river cruising! Faye Carroll, Travel Consultant – Saltash

elen & I have really caught the cruising bug. After our first full cruise to the Mediterranean in June 2018, we immediately turned our attention to 2019 and selected Celebrity Cruises ‘Silhouette’ cruise to the Baltics largely because of its wonderful itinerary that visited Denmark, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Germany. Although the ship is quite big at 122,000 tonnes it still had an intimate atmosphere and we always felt very comfortable. Our cabin, with balcony, gave us the opportunity to relax privately or participate in any of the numerous activities available. Having taken advantage of our door-to-door transfer service (making the journey so simple and stress free) we set sail from Southampton on 2nd June 2019 and after a day at sea we arrived at Copenhagen. Rather than booking an organised excursion we took a local bus into the centre to explore the city making our way to Nyhaven where we enjoyed a boat trip around the canals and waterways of the city, finishing up with an obligatory beer sat beside the canal. Onwards, we next came to Tallinn where we pre-booked 6
a private guided tour in the morning. We finished in town and stayed for lunch before making our own way back to the ship. Our very interesting young tour guide explaining the recent histories of independence, etc. Still travelling eastwards, we sailed to the undoubted high-light, St Petersburg. Our 48 hours (an overnight stay is a must) in this amazing city were filled to the full. We left each morning by 8am and returned again some 8 or 9 hours later. We even added in the ballet on our first night. What better place to watch Swan Lake? We couldn’t decide if the highlight of the trip was the Peterhof Palace, the Hermitage or the Church on the Spilled Blood. Again we prebooked this trip privately, which only enhanced our short time here. No rest for the wicked, as the following day we arrived in Helsinki. Today we joined a ship excursion to the Winter World Centre – Ice Cups with Vodka (at 10 in the morning!) husky sled ride, kick sleds, snow igloos and will never forget Helen doing “star shapes” in the snow! Back into Helsinki to visit the Church in the Rock before a bit of shopping and the shuttle back to the ship.

Our beautiful early morning arrival into Stockholm.
NEWS
Until you study a map of the region you don’t appreciate the close proximity of these countries to one another and you then realise there is so much Russian influence in all the Baltic States. Stockholm was our next port of call and again it did not disappoint. One of the additional highlights is the sail into and out of the city not just the city itself. Our last visit, on our way home, was a surprise package, Warnemunde in Northern Germany where we found their superb beach – yes, a beach! Rostock was worth a visit too. The people, the history, the culture and scenery were highlights in equal measure. Roger Hawke, Managing Director Top Tips: • Book early to get the best cabins situated midship and also to take advantage of early booking incentives such as, in our case, free drinks package – very important! A balcony is also a must for this itinerary. • Use our Door-to-Door transfer service to start and finish your holiday off in style. • Pre-book certain excursions in advance. With our contacts we use local providers that are very efficient and considerably cheaper than the prices offered by the cruise line. • Take advantage of the Dining Package where you can enjoy a number of fine dining experiences in the superb speciality restaurants.

Spirit of Discovery
H
aving sailed on Saga Sapphire in December 2016 I was delighted to be offered two nights on board Saga’s brand new ship Spirit of Discovery which is based in Dover until October but then commences her Southampton sailings. Spirit of Discovery is slightly larger than Saga Sapphire but both have plenty of space on board and neither ships ever felt crowded, the cabins are large with good sized bathrooms and all toiletries are included. The restaurants are spacious and very well served and the food, as always, is amazing. We didn’t eat in any of the speciality restaurants but we did have a look at them and, again, all were lovely restaurants. The ship has a large library with a café which is well stocked, making it a great place for relaxing and meeting friends. 8
The bar areas have been really well laid out and there is a separate whiskey and gin bar which was great! The entertainment was completely different to my last Saga cruise; it was very snazzy, upbeat and great fun. Spirit of Discovery is a boutique, mid-size ship taking 999 passengers with 530 crew members. However, by modern standards she is classed as a small ship and, as an alternative to P&O’s former Oriana, is a great alternative. She is distinctly British in style. The décor is elegant and most importantly very comfortable. As she is a Saga ship passengers must be over 50, but travelling companions can be as young as 45! Spirit of Discovery is most suited to couples and solo travellers. All cabins have a balcony as standard. This is fantastic as everyone has their own private outside space. For single travellers there are 109 single balcony cabins; more

than any other cruise line. When I first looked at the fares, I thought they were rather expensive. However, with Saga, the fares are very inclusive. Included is the complimentary return chauffeur service (within 250 miles) or free port car parking. All meals and snacks are included, plus a selection of wines, served by the glass at lunch and dinner. A free shuttle bus service at most ports, day and night entertainment. Complimentary afternoon tea and 24 hour room service are included together with unlimited tea, coffee, fruit juices and freshly-baked snacks. All tips are included, free Wi-Fi and selected drinks from the bar including beers, wines and house brand spirits. PLUS your cabin has a balcony. With all this, it makes the fares very competitive. The standard of food and service is very high and although only on board for two days, I am looking forward to my next cruise aboard Saga’s Spirit of Discovery. Nick Pritchard, Cruising Manager

Highlighting CUN A R D A
s a cruise ambassador for the Truro branch, I was extremely fortunate to enjoy a 7 night cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria, taking in Guernsey, Rotterdam, Bruges and Cherbourg. Embarking Queen Victoria felt like a special occasion with the beautiful, grand stair case and iconic Cunard bell boy’s welcoming guests. My balcony stateroom was on deck 5, towards the middle of the ship. The stateroom was beautifully decorated with plush bedding, draped curtains and royal blue cushions with gold embroidery. The bathroom was adequate in size with a shower and lovely Penhaligon toiletries. I had plenty of wardrobe space and a vanity area with a big mirror, plug sockets and a hair dryer. Life on board during the day was casual. I enjoyed daily activities to explore more of the ship, such as relaxing in the spa, working out in the gym, team quizzes and much more. I experienced special Cunard moments, like Afternoon Tea in the Queens room. Evenings on the ship were relaxing, with the option to have a three course meal in the main dining room or the Lido Buffet restaurant, which offered a huge choice of food for all dietary requests. I found the food on board extremely delicious, no matter where you chose to dine. They also held two themed Gala Evening’s, where the guests took the opportunity to dress smartly and socialise, whilst enjoying the variety of great entertainment on board. All in all, I really enjoyed my cruise with Cunard. I had misconceptions beforehand that it would be too formal and that there would be a class separation. It is safe to say that this is not the case with the amazing staff, friendly guests and the mixed dress code of casual days and elegant evenings. I would recommend cruising with them if you would like to explore different places, whilst truly relaxing and enjoying great service from their friendly staff. Alex Marlow, Travel Consultant - Truro
“I was so surprised by Cunard I had the impression it was a very Upper Class style ship but how wrong I was, the ship is extremely relaxed and the people are wonderful. The ship had that “Titanic” feel of elegance and White Star Service but I never felt out of place. The itinerary was fantastic and my highlight was Bruges. I loved it so much I am going back in December and saving the pennies to do Cunard’s Trans-Atlantic sailing to New York! So many highlights there are too many to mention from the excellent food to the facilities on the ship. I look forward to my next trip with Cunard.” Carley Gower, Manager - Helston 11

S OUTHE R N CARIBBEAN
with Holland America S
o, we had been invited to a wedding in Florida. However, it’s a long flight for just four
days. Therefore, we wanted to add on a week relaxing to make the whole journey worthwhile. With so many cruise departure ports in Florida, a cruise is a great extension to a holiday in this state. Port Canaveral, Tampa, Miami & Fort Lauderdale, all major cruise terminals. We chose Holland America’s new ship Nieuw Statendam sailing from Fort Lauderdale. The ship is just under 100,000 tons, carries up to 2,600 passengers with 1,025 crew. This Pinnacle class ship includes up-to-date features but, maintaining its Dutch heritage. We had a balcony cabin, which was very elegantly appointed in a contemporary style. The main dining room is on two levels with two seating times or an open seating option that we opted for. As with most new ships there is choice of specialist dining options. The Pinnacle Grill for premium steaks and seafood. Sel de Mer French seafood brasserie, Tamarind is for Asian, which includes a sushi bar. Normally there is a supplement to pay. The Grand Dutch Café was perfect for pastries and coffee and, for casual eating, the Lido Market, buffet-style eatery. The itinerary was for seven nights around the Eastern Caribbean. The check-in at Fort Lauderdale terminal was very smooth as it’s a staggered check-in. After a day at sea on day two we arrived in Grand Turk. Although there were a number of excursions we decided to spend the day on the beach which is within walking distance of the ship; all very clean and with plenty of sun loungers and bars. Our next stop was Puerto Rico and San Juan where we selected the walking tour of the old historic town - a wonderful atmosphere and deep history. 12
On day four we reached St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Here we took the aerial tram up to Paradise Point for a fantastic view of the island’s capital Charlotte Amalie. Then it was down to the town for some duty free shopping! After another relaxing sea day, we visited Holland America’s private island Half Moon Cay.
This is really a day on the beach or, as we did, a cycle tour of the island. This was great fun and as the island is very flat, an easy cycle. Half Moon Cay is a real Caribbean dream island with wonderful beaches and deep blue sea. The following morning it was back to Fort Lauderdale, where the disembarkation was once more very smooth and time to fly home. Although Nieuw Statendam is for families there are some adult only areas, aft deck space and pool. I would recommend the ship for couples who like good food and service. The entertainment is the best that I have experienced at sea, for my age!
SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN WAYFARER
In the main World Stage there are 270 degree LED screens that make the shows something special. Also, wonderful live music shows in BB Kings Blues Club for R&B and funk music, Rolling Stone for a live rock band and Billboard Onboard for chart music. During the day, the Lincoln Centre Stage showcases programmes of chamber music. Drinks on board are not cheap and the drinks packages are expensive and the currency used is US dollars. We just bought as we went. Overall, one of the best cruises I have done, love the ship and will be sailing on Nieuw Statendam again very soon. Loved it! Nick Pritchard, Cruising Manager

CRUISE THE NILE
In style
E
gypt is a country full of wonder and has been drawing travellers to its historic civilisation for thousands of years – and today is no exception. Here are our top five tips to inspire your Egyptian adventure.
• Unmissable Cairo
Kick off your trip down the Nile with a pre-cruise jaunt to Egypt’s capital, Cairo. This chaotic, yet vibrant city is where you’ll find the Cairo Museum, home to thousands of the most important artefacts found from Pharaonic times, including those Howard Carter discovered in Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1922. Make sure you also visit the Pyramids of Giza, the only wonder of the Ancient World which is still standing today. For those who want to delve deeper, A&K can arrange an Insider Access visit to the unopened Grand Egyptian Museum, where you can see archaeologists actively restoring artefacts.
•Hire a dahabiya
Sanctuary Retreats are still amongst the most exclusive and intimate boats cruising the Nile today. Their private docks offer ease and security while on-board the excellent facilities and crew provide an exceptional level of service and comfort. We recommend the stylish Art-Deco Sanctuary Sun Boat IV, as it’s perfect for individuals or families. However, if you are looking for a group or large family getaway, the Sanctuary Zein Nile Chateau dahabiya or the Sanctuary Sun Boat III offers that extra degree of privacy and luxury. Exclusive use of these boats allows us to tailor itineraries and the duration of the cruise, giving you time to take everything in at a relaxed pace. 16

NEWS
•Upgrade to a private Egyptologist on the Sun Boat IV
If you’re travelling with your family or in a group, it may be wise to have your own private guide on the Sun Boat IV. This means that the tour can be tailored to your needs, which is particularly useful should you have the attention spans of mini Egyptologists to factor into the equation. Your guide will stay on the boat with you and you can dine with them.
• Completely immerse yourself
Embrace and absorb everything. The best way to do this is to enjoy some Egyptian delicacies, whether that’s sipping mint tea at a souk or helping yourself to some delicious Umm ‘Ali - an Egyptian bread pudding. If you are looking at a more leisurely holiday in Egypt, you may wish to include experiences such as a visit to Howard Carter’s home or even a meal with a local Nubian family.
• Relaxing back on dry land
Once you’ve explored the wonders of the Pharaonic world, treat yourself to a few days of pure rest and relaxation. For the homebodies amongst us, stay at The Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor, the culture vultures at The Old Cataract, the spa lovers at The Hilton Luxor or the water babies at The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh. It’s no secret that Egypt has had its fair share of struggles in recent years, but now is an exciting time to travel there, especially if you’re keen to experience the main sites at their best and even possibly, their quietest, as tourism regains momentum.

REVOLUTION AFOOT?
Is a device the size of a 10 pence piece the next giant leap for the cruise industry? Cruise Trade News’ deputy editor Gary Peters reports
“T
his is something that does not exist anywhere else. We are very excited about where we take this next.” Those are the words of Princess Cruises’ vice-president UK & Europe, Tony Roberts, when explaining the concept that is Ocean Medallion – a small, wearable device, roughly the same size as a 10p piece, that includes a raft of features intended to improve the passenger experience and personalise each cruise. From touchless stateroom entry, on-demand services such as drinks, food and retail items, games, a family and friends locator and an interactive voyage timeline, there’s very little that hasn’t received the Medallion treatment. Speaking to agents in Southampton on board Crown Princess – the latest ship to be Medallion activated – Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald said: “Medallion evolved from one principle – providing a great experience. We talked a lot about technology and we wanted to make it real. Medallion is customised, as we want individual travel experiences for all of our guests. It’s their ideal holiday experience and we want to remove all the friction that exists for people when they travel.” 18

Changing the landscape
It all sounds great on paper, but after using the device first hand in Southampton on Crown Princess, there’s little doubt that the device – and the technology infrastructure behind it – represents a seismic shift in how passengers travel and interact with their ship. At its heart, Medallion, which was first announced in 2017, acts as an extension of the passenger, in essence their digital key to access the best of what Princess Cruises has to offer. It is now live on four ships – Caribbean Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess and Crown Princess – and will be rolled out across more over the coming years, with a further seven Medallion Class ships by 2020. It’s a quick turnaround; it takes approximately 12 days
NEWS
in dry dock to fit the necessary elements, according to John Padgett, Carnival Corporation’s chief experience and innovation officer, who revelled in showing guests how he can simply walk towards his stateroom door and, bingo, it is unlocked. Padgett – who added that Medallion’s touchless payment system is “far beyond Apple Pay or Amazon Pay” – said that approximately 99.5 per cent of guests are embracing Medallion. There is some hesitancy from guests with pacemakers, however, as the technology can interfere with the system. In a time where more and more cruise lines are embracing technology in an effort to differentiate their brand – think MSC Zoe (similar to the Amazon Echo), or the Le Petit Chef 3D animation on Celebrity Edge and Silhouette – it could be argued that it is Princess Cruises that has taken the biggest plunge. So far the plaudits have come in thick and fast. Time will tell if this is the start of the great cruise technology revolution. 19

Star Clippers W
ow, wow and wow are the words that spring to mind when I talk to anyone about our cruises on the Star Clippers fleet of tall sailing ships. We have been lucky enough to have experienced 3 cruises now and visited Barbados and the Grenadines on the Royal Clipper, St Maarten and the British Virgin Islands on Star Clipper and then in the last few months Singapore to Phuket on Star Clipper! Each time we arrive at the port for embarkation I still have to pinch myself that this beautiful ship is going to be our home for the next 7 days and we are going to be sailing away from port waving goodbye to the mad 21st century world and stepping back in time with a feeling of luxury, peacefulness and pure joy. We originally chose a cruise with Star Clippers back in 2011 on the advice of our travel representative at Newell’s TRAVEL. We wanted a cruise (having never done one before) but didn’t want to do the usual cruise destinations with hundreds or even thousands of other passengers!! Our desire was to feel as though we were on our own private yacht but without the responsibility of having to sail it. With Star Clippers you are treated from the outset of your arrival at the embarkation port as though you are a VIP! The check in is quick and painless and before you know it, having filled out a few port document requirements, you are whisked on board for a celebratory cocktail party on the deck 20
at the Tropical Bar. This will definitely get you in the mood for the holiday and with background music by a pianist/ singer and the bar staff dressed in their tropical shirts – you will soon feel in the holiday mood. The cabins are extremely comfortable with lots of different levels of choice depending on your budget and all have well fitted out bathrooms, very comfortable beds and luxury toiletries. Some of the luxury cabins on the top decks also provide fabulous white dressing gowns and slippers. Sailing away from port on your first night is an exceptional experience. The full crew will be on top deck and, weather permitting, they will haul up all the sails on either the 4 or 5 masts depending on which ship you are on. The captain will welcome all the guests onto the bridge and music from the ship’s speakers will be playing a piece of music at full volume synonymous with ships and sailing “Conquest of Paradise” by Vangelis. Trust me it is a goosepimply moment as crew and passengers wave goodbye to port and embark on this special adventure. The days on board are leisurely and exciting. Each day you will receive a newsletter to your cabin explaining where the ship will be for the coming day; the programme of events on-board, the trips off the ship and the meal arrangements for the day. Some days almost everyone will be off the ship on prebooked trips leaving the crew doing their on-board jobs and
Newell’s C R U I S E
a few passengers who might have elected to remain on deck on one of the sun loungers. There will be opportunities for passengers to climb the mast to the crow’s nest – an exhilarating experience I thoroughly recommend! There will be other days where you are at sea all day and sailing through some stunning seascapes – always with something interesting going on on-board. The stunning dining room is the place where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style with the evening meal being full waiter service. Each evening there is usually a themed food and dress event for the crew incorporating some local tradition associated with the area you are travelling through. There are also afternoon teas served on deck in the Tropical Bar with hot and cold snacks as well as beautiful platters of sculpted fruit and vegetables. On the last evening before disembarkation there is the Captain’s Dinner. Hosted by the Captain on the top table, the crew and chef seriously go to town on the menu, the food presentation and the staff procession with flaming Baked Alaska’s held aloft by the crew and marched through the dining room; quite something to behold. The crew are always keen to get passengers involved with as many activities as possible and will gently encourage at every opportunity and there are lots of things to consider trying out.

The style, quality and uniqueness of Star Clippers will keep us coming back time after time and on every cruise the repeat customers are always in high numbers; always a good indication of a great holiday. This really is a top-class holiday, we would recommend Star Clippers to anyone who likes an adventure and loves the sea. Stunning on every level! Jackie Harmer – client

AWARD WINNERS
A
s all our readers will know, Newell’s TRAVEL has been acknowledged at the celebrated AAA Awards on many occasions and this year we were nominated for 2 categories; South West & South Wales Travel Agency of the Year and ATAS Ambassador of the Year. This year was made even more special because Jetset and Newmarket Holidays very generously ran a staff competition and the lucky winners would join Helen & Roger at the prestigious AAA Awards at London’s Park Plaza Hotel on 11th July. The 2 lucky members of staff to be drawn out of the hat were Carol Sleep, Tavistock, who joined the Jetset table and Beverley Townsend, Truro, who joined Newmarket Holidays. Another twist to the plot, Mercury Holidays very kindly invited Rachel Gill, Saltash, to join them at their table because Rachel is escorting their “Essence of North India” tour in October this year. The scene is set; the suspense is palpable can Newell’s TRAVEL win again? Imagine the excitement at this glittering event when Newell’s TRAVEL was honoured, yet again, with the South West England & South Wales Travel Agency of the Year Award. Roger said: “It is always a great honour to be recognised by the nation’s leading tour operators at the AAA’s, the most prestigious Awards in the whole travel industry. Our success is down to hard work, excellent professional staff and innovative thinking and our close working relationship with the country’s leading tour operators”. 22

Team Newell’s TRAVEL took part in the Race for Life in aid of fighting Cancer in Truro on 7th July 2019. 27 members of Newell’s TRAVEL ran, jogged and walked the 5K course and raised a whopping £4,663.34 including gift aid. Everyone involved had a personal connection to this great cause which not only made it a massive achievement but a really special event. There were plenty of tears but plenty of fun also. Helen & Roger invited everyone back to their home for a celebratory Hog Roast joined by our sponsors Newmarket Holidays and Jetset which ended such a marvellous day on a very high note. We would like to send a massive “thank you” to everyone who donated and supported us.

n October last year I was very lucky to be able to go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise with a colleague around the Mediterranean and visit places I had only dreamed about. The ship itself was the Freedom of the Seas and was packed with activities to enjoy, entertainment and a great array of dining facilities suitable for all ages, as the Royal Caribbean fleet is very family orientated.
