The South Coast of Massachusetts

T

his issue features the South Coast, the communities along the southern shorelines of Massachusetts. The region is full of farms, wineries, beaches, and history, providing a far more relaxing environment than the major cities along the east coast. The South Coast of Massachusetts extends from Cape Cod, east to the Rhode Island border and along the shorelines of Buzzards Bay. The region is also the only coastline along the entire eastern U.S. seaboard that actually faces straight south; so the name, South Coast, is fitting. The Gulf Steam makes its turn just off the coast of this region providing milder New England winters and cool summer breezes. The South Coast has a population of a little over 300,000 living in 11 communities. It is a very diverse part of the country with breathtaking scenery and some of the nation’s best seafood and local grown food sources along its expansive coastline. At one time, this region was actually called the Farm Coast because much of the area supplied fresh, locally grown food for much of the Northeast. Still today, the South

Coast fishing industry is the leading supplier of fresh seafood in America. On the South Coast there are unlimited choices for homes from seaside living, water view homes and exclusive waterfront homes and estates. If you are into boating and fishing, chances are you have made a trip down to the South Coast, where they are tons of activities to do along with some of best restaurants, for seafood specifically! Seafood restaurants are extremely popular during the warmer months, especially when it comes to visitors and tourists, however just because the weather is chilly does not mean your gourmet seafood dishes have to come to a halt. Check out some of the absolute best restaurants on the South Coast of Massachusetts that you should visit this season, along with some recommendations of the most delicious food and drinks that you can get on their menus.

THE BLACK WHALE KITCHEN & BAR NEW BEDFORD, MA The Black Whale Kitchen & Bar is an innovative seafood kitchen with the mission to always serve unique, bold, and fresh dishes that reflect the New Bedford culture. The Black Whale was started by New Bedford locals to honor the heritage of the town, which is known for having world-famous seafood. At The Black Whale, not only can you count on delicious food and a gorgeous atmosphere, but also outstanding hospitality. When visiting The Black Whale Kitchen & Bar, there are a few dishes that are an absolute must that you order. If you are into spicy food like I am, your mouth will immediately water upon smelling (and seeing!) the Boom Boom Shrimp, which is crispy shrimp with sweet and hot sriracha sauce and ginger-sesame dressed greens. This dish is an appetizer made to share, but can easily be ordered as your entrée. Next, check out their best-selling Lobster Thermidor, which is a giant lobster stuffed with scallops, shrimp and cod, topped with creamy gruyere cognac sauce, with garlicky green beans and herb roasted fingerling potatoes on the side. This lobster is extremely rich and downright scrumptious, filled with all of your favorite seafood. It is great to share, or all for yourself if you have worked up an appetite! Another tasty entrée is the Latin Crusted Grilled Salmon – for lunch or dinner! This salmon is topped with Salsa Verde with grilled avocado and glazed sweet potatoes on the side. And, of course, The Black Whale is known for its amazing sushi selection; some of my favorites include their classic California Veggie Roll, the Spicy Tuna Crunch as well as the Tempura Shrimp. For a drink, be sure to order one of their Pomegranate Lemon Drops, mixed with Absolut Citron, pomegranate liqueur, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. This cocktail tastes as refreshing and fruity as it looks!

SEAPORT INN & GRILL, FAIRHAVEN, MA The Seaport Inn & Grill is a new inviting, upscale dining experience known for fresh ingredients and passion for quality dishes. This restaurant is located right by the water’s edge and is an awesome place to go with family and friends, or to stop by for a nice appetizer and cocktail! During the summer months, they feature outdoor dining and entertainment, and when it gets chillier, you can cozy up inside with their beautiful ambience. The Chef is known for using fresh and thoughtful flavor combinations that are guaranteed to leave your tastebuds wanting more. There are so many great items on the Seaport Inn & Grill menu, with a few of my personal favorites including the Thai Short Rib as well as the Scallop and Brussels. The Thai Short Rib is tender short ribs cooked in a Thai-style sauce, garnished with cilantro and Thai chili peppers, served over white rice. The short rib was extremely tender and seasoned to absolute perfection. The Scallop and Brussels is seared scallops served over butternut squash and roasted Brussel sprout risotto. Anything involving Brussel sprouts and you can immediately count me in. With a dish this yummy, you may want to order a second one to-go! Not only are these meals served up beautifully, but they taste just as good! If you’re a sangria lover like me, you cannot leave The Seaport Inn & Grill without ordering one (or two!) of the Fall Sangrias. This cocktail is mixed with Smirnoff caramel vodka, green apple Crown Royal, Dr. Loosen Riesling as well as Apple Cider, topped with a cinnamon sugar rim and garnished with Anise, Cinnamon Stix as well as fresh apples.

BITTERSWEET FARM & TAVERN, WESTPORT, MA The Bittersweet Farm & Tavern is a rustic space that features fireside dining as well as upscale American fare in a cozy tavern atmosphere that is a great spot to hang out with family and friends, celebrate a special occasion or spend a date night – especially when live local bands are entertaining on the weekends. Not to mention, on the first Sunday of every month, Bittersweet Farm & Tavern hosts a special brunch. The overall atmosphere of this restaurant is everything you could dream of – it is absolutely gorgeous, homey and an ideal spot for an event. Their menu spans from local raw bar items to chicken and pasta as well as sandwiches and classic comfort foods – and so much more! At Bittersweet Farm & Tavern, I got a taste of one of their absolute best-selling dishes, the Autumn Scallops. These scallops are pan-seared, super tender and flavorful and are served over butternut squash risotto, which is beyond outstanding. Next, I sipped on their heavenly Peanut Butter Cup Martini, which is every chocolate and peanut butter lover’s perfect drink, that can double as a cocktail and a dessert all in itself. This cocktail is mixed with Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Godiva creamy chocolate liqueur, White Crème de Cacao and drizzled with Chocolate and Peanut Butter sauce. If you’re in the mood for a savory, sweet beverage that will satisfy your sweet tooth – this is it! •

Four-season living has become popular with families and retirees for second homes, vacation homes as well as primary residences. Since 1987, Davis Frame Company has been a leader in timber homes, panel homes and barns in the Northeast. Recently we spoke to the team at Davis Frame for their comments on the current market. They said, “In 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have received a skyrocketing increase in inquiries from folks wanting to build primary and vacation homes in New Hampshire. Most of these inquiries are from people interested in building a vacation home here, but some are looking to move here permanently from other states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. One of New England’s most prestigious country club, The Kittansett Club in Marion, sits on a seaside neck overlooking the harbor. Mattapoisett, MA c1750 The town of Mattapoisett in Plymouth County has historic roots dating back to 1750 and is known as one of the finest shipbuilding communities in New England. Over 400 ships were built in the town’s shipyards including The Acushnet, the ship that Moby Dick author Herman Melville sailed on and later deserted. Fairhaven, MA c1659 Fairhaven borders Mattapoisett to the east and New Bedford to the west with a shared harbor that houses the largest North Atlantic fishing fleet in the U.S. supplying much of the world with scrod, scallops and other seafood; it is home to one of the last remaining fish auctions in the country. Located on Buzzards Bay and bordered to the east by the Acushnet River, Fairhaven has several commercial wharfs along its waterfront, a yacht club, and several marinas for recreational craft. There are also several small beaches and parks in Fairhaven, the largest at Ft. Phoenix State Park. A bike path runs along the shore on an abandoned rail line connecting shoreline communities along Buzzards Bay. Most of the town’s population lives either in the west side of town, along Sconticut Neck or in the village of East Fairhaven; the northeast quarter of the town’s land is much more sparsely populated. The center area of town has charming historic New England designed homes and shops along small one-way streets. Dartmouth, MA c1650 Dartmouth was one of the first areas of southeastern Massachusetts settled nearly 300 years ago. Dartmouth itself is part of the Farm Coast New England, comprised of historic coastal villages, vineyards and farms. There are several waterways including Lake Noquochoke, Cornell Pond, Shingle Island River and Paskamansett River. There are several working farms and vineyards in town which are part of the region’s Coastal Wine Tour. The villages of Hixville, Bliss Corner, Padanaram, Smith Mills, and Russells Mills are located within the town. Dartmouth shares borders with Westport,

Freetown, Fall River, Buzzards Bay, and New Bedford with boat shuttles traveling multiple times daily to Martha’s Vineyard and Cuttyhunk Island. Two distinct areas of Dartmouth are separated by Route 6, North Dartmouth which is very rural, and South Dartmouth along the sea with extraordinary coastal villages like Padanaram. Dartmouth is home to the University of Massachusetts, the largest educational center in the Southcoast. Once inside, you’re instantly consumed by the remarkable architecture, luxury, and feel of history surrounding you. It’s an experience unlike any mountain destination we have visited. Their world class customer service continues as we stop in for a chat with the friendly concierge offering seemingly endless activity options ranging from their full service spa, multiple dining options, Sleigh Rides, Snowshoeing, and of course lift tickets to the spectacular Bretton Woods. We stayed in one of the ‘Corner Vista’ rooms which was tastefully appointed and very cozy for a cold winter night. Our room had a large gas fireplace with sitting area including large windows offering a perfect sprawling view of the Bretton Woods ski area. With so much to conquer in a short trip, we didn’t spend a great amount of time in the room, but after a long day on the slopes, it was the just the inviting home base we needed. We slept like babies in the super comfy king size bed awaiting us. Our personal favorite restaurant on site was Stickney’s Steak Chop & Pub located on
