Life by The Sea in Rhode Island’s East Bay
R
hode Island, the smallest state in the union, is home to Narragansett Bay, New England’s largest estuary covering almost 150 square miles. Little Rhody, as the locals call it, is connected by a series of magnificent bridges linking the East Bay to the West Bay. Much of the State’s population lives along Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in small historic communities that date back hundreds of years to our early settlements. Narragansett Bay is a major resource that provides food, recreation and commerce that is far-reaching. Rhode Island’s nickname, The Ocean State reflects life by the bay and by the ocean with some of the best fishing grounds, beaches and great summer tourism communities in the U.S. The Bay is home to over 30 islands and also connects the State of Rhode Island with Massachusetts coastal communities. The East Bay of Rhode is one of the most amazing places to live with easy access to Providence and the great eateries of Federal Hill as well as the charm of Bristol, Warren and Newport, “The City by The Sea,” with its amazing seafood delights and coastal waterfront dining. There is also the “Secret Coast” of Rhode Island. Detached from the rest of the state, Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island are truly a haven for year-round and summer seasonal residents. Throughout the Easy Bay, there are majestic summer cottages and mansions sprinkled along the coast with spectacular views of the Bay and Block Island Sound. We all know about the opulence of the Newport Mansions
built at the turn of the last century along Ocean Drive and Bellevue Avenue. Today, much like in years past crowds flock to Newport from all over the globe to take in the summer vibes of this eclectic place to be, there is nothing like Newport Rhode Island on a Summer day! One of the most spectacular features in the East Bay are the bridges that connect various communities in the region to each other and the rest of the state. There are 30 bridges over waterways in the East Bay, the most spectacular being the Jamestown Bridge, Newport Bridge, Mt Hope Bridge, Sakonnet River Bridge and the ornate community bridges between Barrington, Warren and Bristol. It seems wherever you are in the East Bay you are crossing a bridge with beautiful water views. It is ironic that Rhode Island, “The Ocean State” connects with Massachusetts, “The Bay State” along the coastal regions and rivers of the Southcoast. With all the coastlines across the country and along the East Coast, West Coast and the Gulf, we seem to have cornered the market for coastal nicknames for states. • All the Best,

ET ON A 4-ACRE PLOT OF LAND, this newly built contemporary estate graces the rural landscape with a modern design inspired by an Italian fortress the owners had seen in a James Bond film. They were so transfixed by the fortress they decided to book a trip to Italy so they could stay in that very same fortress. The goal of this project was to create a home that showcases the exterior structure and merges contemporary interiors so that the homeowners can live in a stylish but inviting space. Davitt Design Build was meticulous about crafting a home that brought their vision to life. Comfortable, soothing, and spacious, each level of this home features a walk out deck with expansive windows showcasing the dynamic 180-degree ocean views. The rooftop deck overlooks Narragansett Bay and the Beavertail Lighthouse, along with a manmade rock garden and lavender lined pool. started to craft this home, the existing rock ledge posed an early and formidable chal-
lenge. While blasting the ledge, the owners
made the decision to keep and utilize a portion of the rock outcroppings to blend the jagged edges into the patio. The effect is to extend
the modern feel into the outdoor living space. Boulders excavated were thoughtfully posi-
tioned on the property to add another element of the design to the landscaping.

HODE ISLAND is by far the smallest state in the United States. The nickname, “Ocean State” makes it seem much larger than it actually is. In fact, there are 30 countries in the world smaller than Rhode Island. In comparison, Delaware, the state most often thought to be the smallest state is twice the size of the Ocean State. The state is divided into two regions, the East Bay and the West Bay. The West Bay and mainland are separated from the East Bay area by Narragansett Bay and linked only by a series of rivers and bay bridges. One of the most unusual things about Rhode Island is the West Bay and mainland residents rarely visit the East Bay and vice versa; the locals refer to it as “crossing the bridge,” as if it were another country. The only exception of course is Newport, “The City by the Sea,” in summer which is simply a mecca for tourist from everywhere.

The East Bay itself is really three distinct areas all connected by a series of bridges: Bristol County, the closet to the capital city, Newport County and Tiverton and Little Compton that border Massachusetts. Each region is made up of small coastal communities each unique in their own special ways and all connected by over 30 bridges along the East Bay of Rhode Island. HE EAST BAY OF RHODE ISLAND is home to only 13% of the state’s total population of just
over one million residents and has deep historic roots dating back to the 1600’s when Roger Williams and his followers were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for their religious beliefs. They settled in what is now Providence and along the shores of Aquidneck Island in Newport County. Farmers, fisherman and boat builders were the first to occupy the East Bay region. The land had rich soils and safe harbor access for commerce and fishing along Narragansett Bay. Today there are still farms and homes in the region dating back hundreds of years and vast amounts of fieldstone walls that separate land areas, much like the coastlines of Eastern Ireland.
