“The state’s nickname, ‘The Ocean State’ is all about its coastlines. Along Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean this tiny state has over 400 miles of shoreline.”

The East Bay in the Ocean State A Land of Bridges and Bays

R

Newport, Jamestown, Tiverton and Little Compton. Miles of bridges connect the counties and towns across various rivers, and the Mt. Hope and Narragansett Bay. On approach to Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport from the south there are spectacular views of the coastline along the East Bay. One of the most unusual aspects of life in Rhode Island is if you are from the West Bay you rarely cross “the bridge” to the East Bay for anything; the same is true of the East Bay. This issue of Coastal Home Life is all about living in the East Bay and Aquidneck Island. The rivers, bays and beaches, the communities and regions, and all they have to offer. It is all about coastal living at its best, because if you live in the region you are literally just minutes from the shoreline. This region also is one of the few places on the East Coast where you can see the sun rise and set over water. From Barrington to Newport and Bristol to Little Compton you will cross the bridges of the East Bay and Aquidneck Island that offer some of the most spectacular vistas of the Ocean State, enjoy the journey and enjoy this issue of Coastal Home Life! •

HODE ISLAND IS HOME TO NARRAGANSETT BAY, New England’s largest estuary with more than 30 islands, over 196 square miles of waterways, and 560 miles of coastline. Rhode Island, the smallest state in the country, is comprised of just over 1200 square miles. The state’s nickname, “The Ocean State” is all about its coastlines. Along Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean this tiny state has over 400 miles of shoreline. Only 12% of Rhode Island’s population of 1.1 million residents live in the East Bay and Aquidneck Island. Narragansett Bay splits the state into two regions known as the West Bay and the East Bay. The East Bay and Aquidneck Island are only accessible by a series of bridges. In colonial days, ferries connected East Bay residents to the mainland at numerous points across the Providence and Seekonk Rivers, and at other various locations along the bay. Today over a dozen major bridges connect the East Bay to the mainland across the many rivers and bays that comprise the Narragansett Watershed. This region of Rhode Island may be very small, but it is home to some of the most pristine historic communities in the country. The East Bay encompasses two of the states 5 counties, Bristol County and Newport County. Bristol County makes up the upper bay communities of Barrington, Warren and Bristol, RI. The lower bay is Newport County which includes the towns of Portsmouth, Middletown,

Eat Well, Drink Well and Feel Good in Bristol, Rhode Island

AM ALWAYS HAPPIEST WHEN I am by the water (who isn’t, right?) which is one of the many reasons that I chose to spend my college years in Bristol, Rhode Island at Roger Williams University. After living in Bristol for four years, I know first-hand how much it has to offer – gorgeous views, a college campus that resembles a resort, the biggest and most exciting fourth of July of all time, some of the nicest people that I have ever met and, of course, the absolute best restaurants. Once my friends and I moved into a house off campus, we became regulars at many of the hottest restaurants and bars in the town. After absolutely falling in love with Bristol, now, four years later, I still find myself making trips back to specifically visit my favorite spots, order my favorite meals and enjoy my favorite views. If you are planning an upcoming day or weekend trip to Bristol, check out some of the spots that I love the most, and the tastiest items on the menus that are absolute must-tries.

marketplace best bites Next is Bristol Bagel Works, which was always my first stop before a morning class and especially on the weekend after a long, fun night out. Bristol Bagel Works has been open since 1994 and is a small, family-owned business that always serves fresh, quality food. Not to mention, has some of the nicest employees you will ever meet. It’s a great place to hang out with friends and catch up or to grab a bagel to-go if you are in the mood to walk around the cute streets of Bristol. My favorite item to order at Bristol Bagel Works has and always will be their Cracked Pepper Turkey sandwich on a spinach bagel. It is so flavorful, so filling and just downright delicious. They have so many different freshly baked bagels, a ton of different flavors of cream cheese and so many Boar’s Head cold cuts to choose from if you are in the mood for lunch. I can attest that Bristol Bagel The Wave

Works hands down has the most enjoyable, doughy bagels in all of Rhode Island.

My first stop was Plant City in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Wave also has a great outdoor patio that you can enjoy in warmer weather. I visited The Wave countless times and it was also always my go-to for takeout if I needed a quick bite or wanted to enjoy some food by the water. The best part about dining in, or taking out/ getting delivery from The Wave, is that you always know that you can rely on them for a delicious meal and great service – nothing less. The Wave has been voted to have the best wings in the East Bay, and let me tell you, that does not even begin to describe how amazing they are. The Wave’s Citrus Chipotle BBQ wings are tossed in the most mouthwatering, perfect sauce that you could ever imagine. If you are as into spice as I am, it is the prefect medium of a hot barbecue while also incorporating a hint of citrus. With features like 9-foot ceilings and spacious, open floor plans, the luxurious residences at Riverbend are more like opulent homes than townhomes.

T

HE CAPE COD REAL ESTATE MARKET always heats up in summer, as beachgoers from far and near look to buy their own little piece of heaven on the Cape. But this year—whoa! In the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown that we all grudgingly endured, homes on the Cape are moving fast. The timing couldn’t have been better for the private club community of Willowbend in Mashpee to introduce its luxurious new Riverbend Townhomes neighborhood. If ever a product were ideally suited for people who want to escape the congestion of the city and live like a king on the Cape, this is it.

22 COASTALHOMELI FE.CO M

JULY • AUGUST 2020

“We certainly didn’t know that we’d all be confined to quarters for two months in the spring,” said David Southworth, Founder and CEO of Southworth Development, owner of Willowbend. “But we did expect there to be high demand for the townhomes in our new Riverbend neighborhood. So we haven’t been surprised by all the attention they’ve received and the interest they’ve gotten from buyers. The Riverbend Townhomes are a unique product in many ways, and one that fits the needs of people looking to enjoy a relaxing Cape Cod club lifestyle perfectly.” One of the things that makes the Riverbend Townhomes so unique is that they’re situated in a neighborhood within a neighborhood. Or maybe better said—in a resort within a resort. Willowbend is a gated community to begin with—one with an amazing array of amenities that residents and club members alike view as the best on the Cape. But the Riverbend community offers an even higher level of privacy and seclusion—and its own exclusive amenities to boot.

One of the Riverbend Townhomes’ key features is the privacy each residence enjoys.

The Riverbend lifestyle is all about options, including the option to create highly customized living spaces, both indoors and out.

Nestled between the picturesque Santuit River and Willowbend’s beautifully manicured 27-hole golf course, the elegantly appointed two-story townhomes at Riverbend are just a short golf cart ride from the Willowbend clubhouse, fitness facilities, tennis center and golf shop. But the Riverbend neighborhood will also feature its own amenities that are exclusively for the use of Riverbend residents, including a swank swimming pool, men’s and ladies pool house facilities, and a lavish outdoor entertainment area with deluxe grilling stations and landscaped firepit. So residents can go for a dip or host a gathering within steps of their doors. Or, take a short stroll to the Willowbend clubhouse, where a world of other five-star club amenities await.

The Riverbend neighborhood will feature just 22 newconstruction townhomes, with a choice of two expansive floor plans that range from 2735 to 3295 square feet. Standard in each three-bedroom Riverbend townhome are beautiful trim work and architectural details, spacious bathrooms with soaking tubs, nine-foot-plus ceilings—and one design even includes an upstairs bonus room that can be used as a fourth bedroom. Their quiet setting offers the ultimate in privacy and many offer sweeping views of the golf course. “Another thing people love about the Riverbend Townhomes is all the different ways they can be customized,” said Eileen Peros of Willowbend’s real estate sales team. “Buyers love that they have so many choices, both inside and out. Many are creating wonderful outdoor living spaces with enlarged patios that expand the way they can enjoy their home. We love helping buyers tailor-make their townhomes to suit their own personal style and lifestyle preferences.” Riverbend is maintenance-free living on a grand scale—and the perfect choice for anyone looking for a safe harbor that’s far from the madding crowd of modern life. You won’t find a better place to celebrate life on the Cape with your family and friends. •

designs have followed a simple and classic set of rules for hundreds of years. For architects and custom builders, the harsh environment in the Northeast imposes limitations that present unique challenges for function and design in coastal home construction. Coastal living by all standards is best defined by simplicity and respect for the natural seasonal elements a design faces in the Northeast. Standing the test of time, often defines excellence more here than almost anywhere. For hundreds of years in New England coastal homes designs have endured and set a standard for excellence in design and building.

1977 and is located in Portsmouth, RI. The house sits on over an acre of vast landscape and offers beautiful waterfront views. The objective for this interior remodel was to create a cozy living environment to enjoy with family that would also function as a space to entertain guests. The existing kitchen and living spaces were outdated with choppy rooms and old fixtures and furniture.

This beautiful coastal home now features a newly renovated first floor interior with a spacious kitchen and living areas. The original cramped and outdated kitchen was modernized into a spacious kitchen with a functional island, bright white cabinetry, gorgeous white tile behind the cook top and new hardwood flooring. The living areas have been updated and expanded to offer ample space for entertaining family and guests. Stunning views of the water can be seen from every room in the home. 30 COASTALHOMELIFE .CO M

Experience the Davitt Difference “It took us two years to find the perfect “forever” home on Aquidneck Island to enjoy with our family and friends. When we saw this house we knew the location was absolutely perfect, but the house was chopped up and needed work to take advantage of the spectacular views of the Sakonnet. It was also important to us that the house flow in a way that made gathering easy. Enter Davitt Design Build! After the first meeting at our new home we knew we were in good hands- the Davitt design team immediately understood what we were trying to do and to say they nailed our vision is an understatement. They listened carefully when we talked about how we wanted to live in the house, and a year after moving in we are still marveling at the way the space works so well for us while also capturing the beautiful views. The process was seamless from design through construction, and the professionalism of the entire team who worked on our project made the whole thing a true pleasure. I don’t know how many people can say that at the end of a home renovation!” •

Building Your Custom Dream Home BY CHL STAFF

REAM HOMES don’t just appear like magic. Successful custom homes are the result of meticulous planning, quality craftsmanship, and a thoughtful infusion of personal style. Buying a production home is easy. The steps are simple and take little effort on your part. Building a custom home is much more involved. It’s a major undertaking demanding a lot of your time, effort and, of course, money. It consists of a number of major steps or actions that demand your participation and decisions. With a custom home nothing is pre-planned, pre-selected or pre-designed. Because of this, taking a custom home from concept to completion takes significantly more time. If you want different, unique, spectacular and perfect for your life, you have to create it!

Selecting Your Home Site Think of your land as the canvas upon which to paint your dream home. Do you want waterfront or water view, wooded privacy, sweeping land views, city-side building close to urban centers? Once you decide on a region, you can focus on the physical characteristics of the terrain. If you dream of sweeping views, you will want to make sure you can situate windows to maximize panoramic vistas. If building an energy-efficient home is a priority, your residence should face south to maximize the potential of solar energy. Again, professional advice in your land acquisition will ensure you will get the most critical piece of the custom home building process right the first time. OUTDOOR SPACES

landscapes, pools & patios Create gorgeous pathways

A yard with only landscaping or only hardscaping doesn’t reach its full potential—pathways can add a bit of magic to your home’s outdoor space. Installing gorgeous pathways throughout your yard can create sections and make it easier to get from point A to point B. You can lay stones in your yard to create magical-looking pathways or pave a sidewalk, depending on your yard’s existing style. Choose a material that stands out but still complements your home. The actual pathways should be direct but stylish. Curved designs are typically the most popular. North Shore Estate - LANDD International rpmarzilli.co 508-533-3718 Photo by Eric Roth

Natural beauty

Creating a gorgeous garden area is one of the best ideas for designing a breathtaking yard. You can customize your garden to your preferences. There are many different designs to base your garden off of: forest designs with plenty of trees and high shrubbery, butterfly gardens with native flowers to attract birds and butterflies, raised vegetable beds and more. Decide which base appeals to you most and which is the most practical for your budget and space. Prepare your yard for landscaping before you begin, and try to incorporate as many native plant species as possible to give your yard an authentic and naturally lush look. Yardzen Online Landscape Design Package yardzen.com 888-927-3936

Divide and conquer

You can use your yard for several different things, and dividing it into sections can really help you make the most of it. Yard division is one of the best design ideas you can use to customize your yard and make it perfect for you. For example, if you throw a lot of parties, you can make an outdoor bar section, a section for seating, and a garden. If you have children, you can make a play area, a space to watch movies, and an outdoor kitchen to make plenty of meals and snacks. Division is the best way to take full advantage of your outdoor space’s potential. Outdoor Living by Belgard jjmaterials.com 508-336-5363

ISTORIC FAMILY COMPOUND Overlooking Sakonnet Harbor Located on 1 plus acres at 10 and 9 Minnesota Road, the Compound consists of The Big House, built in 1900, an adjacent bungalow, the nearby White House built in 1935 and a mooring. The Big House, #10, a classic 3 floor summer home built on a ledge above the flood zone, and further protected by the Sakonnet Harbor Breakwater, has survived all the hurricanes that nature could throw at it, including the catastrophic one in 1938. A porch which overlooks a large lawn, the mooring and rocks where people swim, provide a commanding place for gatherings and viewing the Harbor with all of its activities and spectacular sunsets. The first floor living room, with a fireplace, and a sunroom also over- look to the harbor. A kitchen, dining room, butler’s pantry and a half bath round out the first floor. 4 tastefully decorated bedrooms with two full baths are on the second floor and there is a bedroom, bath and storage on the third floor. A 2 bedroom 1 bath bungalow, affectionately called the Guest House is nestled on the north side of the house. Across the expansive lawn to the east is #9, The White House, an adorable 3 bedroom 2 bath summer cottage, the front of which is covered with climbing roses. The large garage is ideal for storing a car, bikes, or a boat over the winter. This historic place says “Sakonnet” like no other. It is time for another family to make its memories. Many people struggle with staying in shape during the hot and humid summer months. How are you supposed to run in 90 degree weather with 99% humidity? We have some quick tips to keep your workout routine alive. BY MEGAN WARD

6 0 COASTALHOMELIFE .CO M

JULY • AUGUST 2020

Avoid mid-afternoon. The hours between 11am and 3pm are always the hottest in July and August. This makes it difficult to complete physical exercise outdoors. Make a note to try and workout in the early morning or around sunset, even if this means just taking a daily walk. This will keep you energized and avoid the possibility of heat exhaustion or another heat-related illness.

Walking. Taking a long, or short, stroll around your neighborhood can be considered a workout. Running long distances is difficult when the weather is keeping you inside. By walking, you will still get a sweat and burn calories without feeling the extreme heat. Walking can boost your mood, strengthen your bones, and improve your coordination. Sounds better than not exercising at all, right?

Load up on Liquids. Water is vital no matter what time of the year while exercising, but it is critical through the summer months. Drinking a sports drink or anything with high electrolytes a couple hours before working out will also help your body stay hydrated. It is best to try and avoid the sugar-filled sports drinks. Just plenty of H2O before and after working out can do the trick!

Reward Yourself. Set small goals and reward yourself when they are completed. It could be something as small as taking a 5 minute break in the middle of a workout or ending your week with a professional massage. These things can help to motivate you to get through a workout, especially when it is hot out and it may be the last thing you want to do. If cardio seems impossible in the heat of the summer, start lifting
