Old Cape Cod & The Islands
I
n the year 1957, Patti Page released a song that turned out to be the best tourism plug in history for the region, “Old Cape Cod;” it was an instant hit for the ages. In the 1950s Cape Cod’s total population was about 40,000, mostly living in the Upper-Cape and Mid-Cape regions. There were only about 6000 residents on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket at the time. By 1960, over 2500 summer homes were built in Cape Cod & The Islands. At that time, only 65% of the homes were for year-round living; ironically, in 2020 those numbers remain relatively the same. Summering on Cape Cod became the rage for many throughout the Northeast after new bridges built in the 1930s and the Mid-Cape Highway (US Route 6) completed in the 1950s, opened access to the Cape. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy, whose family summered in Hyannis Port, signed the legislation that established The Cape Cod National Seashore as a national treasure to be protected. Today, Cape Cod & The Islands are home to just over 250,000 year-round residents which swells to over 1 million in the summer months occupying 70,000 summer homes and more than 3500 hospitality and hotel facilities. Living on
Cape Cod is simply matchless by all measures, residents will tell you that in most cases the feel of the Cape life is alive and well even today. The Cape is 65 miles in length and ranges from 1 mile wide to 20 miles wide, no matter where you are, you’re not far from a beach or beautiful coastal area. All of the 15 towns on the Cape are in Barnstable County. Dukes County covers Martha’s Vineyard and The Elizabeth Islands. Nantucket is the only town in Nantucket County. We often take for granted what others consider special, especially in our own backyard. The Cape & Islands are nothing short of amazing. The lifestyle, the scenic beauty, and the small-town feel of its communities are truly unrivalled. In this issue we will take a peek at Cape Cod & The Islands. CShore is focused on serving up the most delicious American style cuisine with a southern influence, something that is totally unique to the Cape Cod dining scene. CShore understands the importance of a beautiful presentation, noting that in their kitchen they make art – not food! They have a gorgeous outdoor dining area, a full-size bar, a fire pit and spacious interior.
TWENTY-EIGHT ATLANTIC AT WEQUASSET RESORT AND GOLF CLUB HARWICH, MA Twenty-Eight Atlantic is likely one of the most beautiful restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure to visit. The restaurant recently became one of the 74 restaurants worldwide to receive the coveted Five-Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide – and for good reason. Twenty-Eight Atlantic offers seating both indoors and outdoors over 27 waterfront acres, and offers a menu that includes both elegant and casual options led by Executive Chef, James Hackney. When the restaurant opens back up for the season in April 2021, there are several items on the menu that you absolutely must try. First is the Native Lobster Carbonara, which is every pasta and seafood lover’s dream. This dish is made up of Bucatini, Craft Pancetta, Egg Yolk, MV Shittake and Caviar, topped with huge chunks of fresh lobster. The dish is aesthetically pleasing and colorful, and tastes even better than it looks.

New Technology for an Age-Old Problem One of the most innovating and newest technologies in foundations and footings for building of all kind, is screw piles. The technology has been around since the mid1800s and had stood the test of time and durability with all types of soil applications and weather conditions. The first screw-pile supported structures were lighthouses built by a blind Irish engineer Alexander Mitchell in 1838 at the mouth of the Thames River in Southern England. The innovating method of using screw piles which were sunk deep into sandy river bottoms provided a solid structural base for these lighthouses which are still operating today. In the United States, several screw-pile lighthouses were built in the Chesapeake Bay due to its estuarine soft bottom and in North Carolinas sounds and river entrances and through the Southeast including Florida and its many keys.
HE STRENGTH, DURABILITY AND INTEGRITY of any structure built above ground today is in the foundation it rests upon. Foundations are designed to accommodate weight bearing loads above them in any type of soil conditions and in colder climates, variable frost depths. The single most important factor in building any structure, including decks, additions, docks and raised structures is soil conditions. Throughout the country in all regions soil conditions vary from compacted dirt, to till, clay, ledge, rock, loose sand and particulates as well as combinations of all of the above. The secret to successful building projects of any kind is to get it right the first time, and with foundations there are no second chances.
