Changing our Living Spaces

he events in our lives over the last year have had a dramatic impact on all of us. For most of our lives, our homes have provided shelter from the elements and a place to share and make memories with family and friends. With the pandemic our homes were transformed into shelters, as the term “Shelter in Place” garnished a new reality for us all. Our living spaces were never intended to be work spaces, education spaces, heath care centers or even spaces designed for sheltering for that matter. The events over the last year will transform our living spaces as a society more than at any other time in the last 50 years. Last year we saw an incredible shift in the day-today operations of the world. Offices shuttered, daily commutes ended, and we tried to do it all from home. According to a study, 36.2 million Americans (22% of the workforce) will be working remotely by 2025, an 87% increase from 2019. The permanence from these events will change our lives forever, but more so change our homes and living spaces in the years ahead, redefining a new directive. Day-to-day living has had to adapt dramatically with ‘stay at home’ directives, heralding a new era where our needs are fundamentally more homecentric. As new home builders shift quickly for the ever-changing market, they are adding more flex-

space to designs, outdoor living options, designs for multi-generational living, more antimicrobial surface materials and changing open floor plans to accommodate offices, libraries and personal spaces. Mud rooms are taking center stage for more distinguishable boundaries between exterior and interior settings for cleanliness and sanitation. It is predicted that we will see less overall communicable disease because of new standards in cleanliness society wide. With so many looking to do home improvements, DYI projects will grow to new heights as pre-pandemic shortage of building trade professionals was already an issue. Homeowners will focus on repurposing and expanding indoor living areas, expanding outdoor spaces and creating safer and more environmentally efficient homes. Families will create better homes for living and make better use of space both inside and outside. Necessity has once again become the mother of reinvention for us all. • All the Best,
