“We have spent more time together, got to know each other for better or worse, and realized we are all in this together.”
Home Life & Living
S
OME THINGS IN LIFE are often taken for granted because we pass through our lives as creatures of habit and routine. Day to day we hardly notice the simple things that often are taken for granted. 2020 began like many other years with our focus centered around a new year, a new beginning, and for many a new optimism. Mid-March has often been referred to as the “Ides of March” a harbinger of ill fortune and a time to beware. In 2020, it certainly became pertinent for all of us. It may be hard to imagine that any good would come as a result of a pandemic like this. But in the most unexpected ways our lives were transformed to adapt to a new normal. One thing that drastically changed is life in our homes, our family relationships, and our connection with loved ones. Family units have been reunited by circumstance and our homes have become our living spaces and working places. We have transformed, adapted and modified our routines, our day to day lives, and our connections with each other. For many of us this transition has completely restructured what we do, and how we do it in an environment that is completely different.
We drive far less, shop far less, prepare more often for everything we have to do each and every day in a whole new and different way. If there is any good that has come from all of this, it would be a total reconnection of the family unit for the first time in decades. We have spent more time together, got to know each other for better or worse, and realized we are all in this together. There have been natural disasters, blackouts and blizzards that confined us in similar ways numerous times in history, but nothing quite like this. We will endure, and life will return to new normal, very much like after 9/11 and a host of other historical challenges our nation has faced. “Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and repeat to yourself, the most comforting words of all; this, too, shall pass.” Ann Landers! • All the Best,

The Best Spots in Hingham, MA to Order Takeout
N OUR CURRENT ENVIRONMENT TODAY, many people may feel uncomfortable going out as much as they usually would. While many restaurants around the country have re-opened with indoor and outdoor seating, these restaurants are also still implementing their takeout, curbside pickup and depending on the location, delivery services. Getting takeout can be a great way to try some new restaurants that are on your list from the comfort of your own home. Or, better yet, from somewhere scenic like the beach! If you live in or find yourself in the Hingham area, I have rounded up some of the best spots in Hingham, MA for takeout that you can count on being easy, convenient, safe and – downright delicious.

CAFFE TOSCA Caffe Tosca is a contemporary Italian restaurant that serves a variety of your favorite, familiar comfort dishes with cozy indoor and patio seating available. Being part Italian, I could not have been more excited to try Caffe Tosca’s Double-Breasted Chicken Parmesan as well as their Spaghetti and Mama DeCarli’s Meatballs. If you’re an Italian food lover, then you know first-hand that there is nothing better than some homemade pasta, and Caffe Tosca both lived up to and exceeded my expectations. The Double-Breasted Chicken Parmesan is made with two generously sized pieces of chicken over a spicy marinara sauce, mozzarella and perfectly cooked homemade spaghetti. The Spaghetti and Mama DeCarli’s Meatballs includes a very generous amount of meatballs served over The Wave
homemade spaghetti with romano and parmigiano and basil. These dishes are both outstanding portions and so delicious. If you’re in the mood for an Italian themed dinner, let Caffe Tosca handle the cooking!
TOSCA
Bristol Bagel Works
Tosca is an absolutely beautiful, upscale restaurant that features an Italian-focused and seasonal menu. When the pandemic began, in addition to their standing menu, Tosca began offering full meal packages that were precooked. With these meal packages, guests are able to take home the par cooked items and, with finishing instructions provided by Tosca, complete the meal in their own kitchen! With this program, guests can have the authentic Tosca experience with the luxury of staying home. For takeout, Tosca provided me with a meal for two, both fully cooked and in the “finish at home” style. The meal, packed in an oven-ready pan side, included two reserve 8-ounce filet mignons, broccolini, white roasted garlic, rosemary salt, Tosca steak sauce and rustic potato souffle on the side. The rustic potato souffle, which is hands down the most mouthwatering side dish of all time, is whipped potatoes mixed with five cheeses and smoked paprika. Not to mention, the filet mignon was truly cooked to perfection, being incredibly tender and flavorful. 18 COASTALHOMELI FE.CO M

BOATHOUSE BISTRO & PIZZERIA Boathouse Bistro & Pizzeria has something for everyone on the menu, whether you’re looking for a seafood related dish, something Italian or a steak dinner! Located right at The Historic Hingham Shipyard, Boathouse Bistro ties together your favorite Italian dishes with the Cape Cod cuisine that all of us New Englanders know and love. At Boathouse Bistro, I was so excited to try the Eggplant Rollatini, which is breaded eggplant that is wrapped around a 3-cheese blend. The Eggplant Rollatini is a fan favorite, and for good reason, as it puts a unique twist on the classic mozzarella stick – and blows it out of the water! It is perfect to split as an appetizer, or for your entire meal (trust me – you’ll want to eat the entire serving!) This dish is a must try and can be ordered for takeout from Boathouse Bistro’s dinner menu. I could not have been more pleased with the amazing service that I received from these restaurants in Hingham. When you are ordering takeout, you want to ensure that you are receiving the same quality of food that you would when dining in, and that is exactly what Tosca, Caffe Tosca, Stars on Hingham and Boathouse Bistro provided. The attention to detail for takeout orders that the staff at these locations have is beyond impressive, with each meal being packaged up flawlessly and the takeout process being totally quick and reliable. So, next time you are not in the mood to cook, order some takeout from these locations and sit back, relax and enjoy! •
STARS ON HINGHAM HARBOR For all of my seafood lovers, I could not stop in
Aidan’s Pub
Hingham without grabbing takeout from one of the top seafood restaurants in the area – Stars on Hingham Harbor. Stars on Hingham is a lively waterfront must-visit restaurant that offers fresh, tasty seafood dishes and is known for its extensive microbrew selection. For takeout, I picked up two New England classics – a lobster roll and some homemade clam chowder. The Lobster roll is served on a buttered and grilled Brioche bun, filled with 6 ounces of freshly picked Maine lobster salad, mixed with chopped celery, light mayonnaise and sea salt. And, of course, you cannot fully enjoy a lobster roll without some salty, crunchy fries! Stars on Hingham’s New England Classic Clam Chowder is also a must and is available in 16-ounces or 8-ounces. This clam chowder does not disappoint as it is perfectly thick, creamy and flavorful! SEPTEMBER • OCTOBER 2020

WATERFRONT LUXURY LIVING
Margaritaville on Cape Cod
J
ennifer Birnstiel, Principal of Archiplicity, LLC worked with their clients in Mashpee to create this custom shingle style home. “Margaritaville” as this home is affectionately known is a nod to the relaxed seaside feel that these homeowners wanted to embrace. The new house was designed and constructed in the footprint of existing home which was razed and then replaced. For the owners it was important to take advantage of the waterfront location and the views further down the inlet waterway. The site has water views on two sides with occluded water views on a third side. The indoor and outdoor living spaces are designed to interact seamlessly at both the first floor and the lower level. The living areas on these two levels are connected with an outdoor staircase from the deck on the first floor. This home was designed to be a family retreat where they can entertain and spend time together with family and friends in a relaxing open floor plan. The decks, indoor/outdoor bar, and fire pit add to the ambiance of the outdoor retreat. SEPTEMBER • OCTOBER 2020

The dock at the exterior lower level allows the homeowner convenient access to their boat. There is a folding glass window to give the interior bar at the lower level, indoor and outdoor access for entertaining. A bathroom at the lower level and the outdoor shower are also accessed from the outside close to the dock. This layout provides easy interaction from boat to home. The master suite is located on the first floor with its own private deck. The master bath is adjacent on the street side of the home to act as a sound buffer and provide more privacy. Additional bedrooms are located on the second floor with a secondary sitting area central to all rooms and a private roof deck over the home office to take full advantage of the inlet views.

A cupola over the staircase acts as a light well to the circulation space below. The bathrooms and utility spaces are located toward the street side to give the major views to the bedrooms and living spaces. On the first floor the layout is an open living floor plan with kitchen. Living and dining located on the inlet end of the home. A home office is located off the living areas and master suite. This allows the homeowner to have a quiet workspace with water views to make working from home even more enjoyable. Many of the interior finishes were selected by the homeowners.
The bold colors for the office and blue and orange palette make this one of the most dynamic spaces in the home. The brackets and battered shingle details are indicative of the shingle style design. The stone at the base on the home on the street side helps to ground this building with its landscaped walls. The only element of the existing house to remain is the front door with a sailboat etched into the glass. This door welcomes you into this new home as it did into the home it replaced. This house is an example of the relaxed elegance of the New England Shingle Style. •

DESIGN BUILD custom cabinetry
Crown Point Cabinetry Building On A Legacy CROWN POINT CABINETRY has been
Early on, the business took shape in the hands of Norm Stowell, and his wife, Deanna. From a garage, Norm worked tirelessly to build cabinetry that would provide clients real value for their money; handcrafted, rugged and beautiful. And his honest word to back up what he built. But the intent at that time wasn’t to become the nationally recognized company they are today. He would be the first to admit it was to contribute to the family income to feed and clothe their seven children.
creating beautiful custom kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, bedrooms and more for over 40 years. From their sole location in New Hampshire, Crown Point has provided cabinetry for clients in all 50 states, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. Pretty impressive for a business that started out as a means to help keep a roof over a family’s head. 30 COASTALHOMELIFE .CO M

With Norm’s quality workmanship and Deanna’s business acumen, the number of clients increased, as did the number of their adult children joining the business. Outgrowing the garage, a “real” cabinetmaking facility was moved into, and soon all seven children were working together with Norm and Deanna. Norm instilled the same qualities in his children that he held true: building the finest cabinet, keeping promises you make, and standing behind what you create.

As word of mouth grew, so did Crown Point. Sales were up. And up. And up! The size of the cabinetmaking crew expanded. But like any fledgling business, it wasn’t without challenges. Growing pains began to surface. Hiring and internal quality issues were making themselves known. The head of production at that time, son Brian Stowell, addressed the situation by reworking the cabinetmaking process into a quality-first approach. At the same time, his wife Rebecca implemented a true, team-based manufacturing system. Thanks to those two key components, Crown Point began to fire again on all eight cylinders, and was poised for a new leap: Direct sales.
COA S TA L H OMEL IFE.COM 31
DESIGN BUILD custom cabinetry
Traditionally, if someone wanted to purchase cabinetry, it was usually through kitchen showrooms or lumber yards, who were the dealers for the manufacturers. And Crown Point at that time had a 75-dealer network providing clients, but sales were stagnating. Looking to supplement what the dealers were able to provide, it was Brian again with a plan: create a Direct Division to specifically handle direct sales. It was a risky move, as the internet was quite new, and nobody sold custom cabinetry across the country to people they never met. It took a tremendous amount of work, but with the effort of the entire crew and countless hours, it became reality. And from there, the Direct Division grew, to the point where Crown Point only sells direct. While selling direct benefits the customer by reducing costs (no middleman), an indirect benefit is the experience itself. Clients are welcome to come visit the cabinetmaking facility, and take in the large, wellappointed showroom and meet with their designer.
This grand kitchen features abundant storage, a butler’s pantry in the alcove, and room for multiple chefs
A few years after direct sales had taken well hold, Norm and Deanna were at the stage of their lives where retirement beckoned. Always being fair with all their children, each was asked in their desire to own the business. While every one of them enjoyed working there, each understood the complexities and demands of actually running the business. And some were thinking of possibly starting businesses of their own. Brian, with his wife Rebecca, became the new owners, with the siblings in full agreement that Crown Point was in the best of hands.

One of their recent purchases, which is up and running with room to grow, has been a state-of-the-art million dollar finish system that produces a consistent oven-baked finish that cannot be matched with hand-spraying and air drying.
After a full day at the beach, this kitchen is the perfect gathering place for a large family dinner
You can have the most advanced equipment in the world, but it is meaningless without great people. The solid foundation of respect and appreciation that Norm and Deanna fostered carried through to the next generation. And the smiles on the faces of the crew at Crown Point tell the story. •

Explore. Experience. Enjoy Life on the South Shore “Along the shorelines of Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay is a special place called the South Shore, it’s a place for living. Away from the masses, these shores are a hideaway blessed with natural beauty and pristine communities for the perfect seaside life. Much like Ireland, it is a place we can call home.” This note was found by an anonymous source on Long Wharf in Boston at the immigration facility in 1860s.
Y
OU MAY CONCLUDE THE IRISH RIVIERA resulted from suburban flight from the working-class neighborhoods of Boston. But well before the exodus to
Braintree, Hull and Marshfield, well-heeled Irish families had built seaside Victorian mansions along the coast south of Boston. And even before that, the Irish gained a toehold in what is now the most Irish town in America, Scituate, Mass. To this day, 6 of the top 10 most Irish towns in America are located in the South Shore of Massachusetts. The South shore in Massachusetts includes the communities of Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, Hanover, Marshfield, Pembroke, Duxbury, Kingston, and Plymouth. The right mix of small historic towns strewn along the bay has become one of New England’s most treasured places to be for so many. Small but completely embraced by a quality of life unmatched by few places anywhere, the South Shore steeps in community, family and celebration of life itself.

From historic seaside residences to spectacular waterfront homes and estates, this region has it all - shopping, dining, culture and proximity to one of the country’s most magnificent cities, Boston, Massachusetts.
Hingham / Cohasset At the southern tip of Boston Harbor along Mass Bay, just 20 miles from Boston sits Hingham and Cohasset on a coastal neck along the northern tip of the South Shore. Hingham and Cohasset have the charm of the typical New England town with a rich history, quaint downtown shops, classic historic homes, steepled churches, tree-lined main streets, sandy beaches, great schools, open spaces and parks, and a wide range of home styles. Cohasset and Hingham both have median home prices of over $800,000, but this is coastal living at its best in the metro-Boston market with a short commute of under 40 minutes or water shuttle to downtown in just over 30 minutes. 4 2 COASTALHOMELIFE .CO M

Scituate The most Irish town in the U.S., Scituate, is a small to mid-sized seacoast community located equidistant between Boston and Plymouth. In the 375 years since its incorporation, it has evolved from a summer colony to a residential community but has managed to retain some of the flavor of its past. Ocean-related recreational activities make it a very desirable place in which to live and to raise families. Its Town Pier accommodates a working fishing fleet and that, coupled with three business areas, represents commercial interests in the town. Scituate also has a strong sense of its history and commemorates its founding in August each year via the celebration of “Heritage Days”. With a population of 18,591 the town is relatively small, but large by south shore standards and ranked as one of the best places to live in Massachusetts. INSIDE probiotics self improvement
For or Against Probiotics?
W
What are Probiotics? Probiotics are microorganisms that can help to
promote a balance of bacteria in your gut. Typically, they come as a strain of bacteria or yeast. There have been many up and coming studies on the pros and cons to probiotics and taking them as a supplement, or through fermented foods, like yogurt. Balancing the bacteria in your gut is important and linked to a person’s overall health. There are also some unknowns with probiotics that are still being studied as we speak. We are here to give you a quick summary of the benefits and bewares of this bacteria.
54 COASTALHOMELI FE.CO M
BY MEGAN WARD
S E P TEMB ER • OCTOB ER 2020
THE UNKNOWNS: Those with compromised immune systems may want to avoid them. Many researchers are still studying which probiotics are helpful. Everyone is different and we do not know who is most likely to benefit from probiotics and how much an individual should take.
THE POSITIVES: Probiotics help balance the good bacteria in your body, specifically your digestive system and heart. They can lower “bad” cholesterol and blood pressure. Probiotics help the body return to, or maintain, a strong community of microorganisms to keep your gut healthy too!
Sometimes they can take awhile to work. The more balanced the bacteria in your intestinal tract is, the less inflammation it will cause and your digestive health will improve. This could take weeks for your gut to adjust to the probiotic, making it less of an instant fix and more of a lifestyle change to benefit your well-being. 10 Effective Daily Principles

ny aspiring individual or company needs a clear vision and business strategy to
produce results if they want real success. From the smallest objectives to long term goals, each person or employee in a company has to maintain that focus and mindfulness in their decision-making process. It’s not always a fast track or an easy path to get to the finish line, and the target may not be precisely hit. However, being accountable and having a sense of direction is crucial to get there eventually, and small increments should be considered an achievement. Mr. Gorra said, “imagine 1% daily growth personally & professionally, what could you accomplish in 365 days?”

GOLF COURSE LIVING
Homes for Living, Communities for Life
L
Ocean Reef Club - Florida Photo by: Braxton Freeman Jr.
IVING IN A GOLF COURSE COMMUNITY is a dream for many of us. Life in a pristine golf course community is very much like living in a sanctuary or park. Gently rolling greens, families of mature trees, ponds, lakes, fountains, and the occasional wildlife sightings welcome you on a daily basis. Today golf courses are enclaves for living that encompass a vast array of activities and interests offering residents complete access to not only golf, racket sports and pools, and also fitness centers, and much more.

Living Florida & Georgia Style A Place to Escape the Inevitable
T
his month in Golf Course Living we are going to take a
look at a few communities in Georgia and Florida. While Florida has been the staple for golf course homes over the last 30 years with its warm winters and beautiful beach communities, Georgia is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations south of the border. Georgia offers seashore, mountain and lakefront golf course homes at a variety of price points and styles, and unlike Florida, you will get a taste of the seasons much like the Northeast. There are hundreds of choices in these two southern states to choose from, let’s take a look at just a few.
The Harbor Club-Lake Oconee, Georgia The Harbor Club has 9 miles of lakefront with one of the top-ranked golf courses in the state of Georgia. There are 550 homes in the community which was originally planned for 900-1000 homes. The Harbor Club is a gated community with a 15,000 sq. ft. clubhouse and fitness facility. The Harbor Club golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The majority of the property owners are full-time residents in retirement and are actively involved in the many neighborhood, self-organized social clubs.
