The History of the South Shore Massachusetts

t is unclear in history where or when the term The South Shore became the reference to the coastal communities along Massachusetts Bay from Boston to the Cape Cod Canal. Some say Statesman Daniel Webster who in 1832 purchased a 150-acre farm in Marshfield first used the term on the senate floor in State House while debating the importance of protecting coastal lands south of Boston. He often referred to both the South Shore and to the Farm Coast (Which is now called The South Coast) as regions that needed to be protected for farming and trade. Webster was known Scituate Harbor as the “Farmer of Marshfield” raising cattle and planting extensive arboretums with trees from all over the world. He taught locals to use fish and seaweed as natural fertilizers in their fields. When Webster died in 1852 he was the Secretary of State, an office he held under three U.S. Presidents. He was best known as a defender of the Constitution with over 150 cases presented to the Supreme Court. Over 33 Million Americans trace their heritage back to the small island of Ireland, which is amazing considering Ireland has a present population of just under 5 million today. Irish immigrants fled their homeland in the 1800s because of starvation from a potato famine and oppression from English landowners; most all of Ireland’s farmers were tenant farmers and were not allowed land ownership. Irish immigrants flooded to

Boston with the hope of a new life in the New World. They settled in Boston’s East End and South End. Their oppression in America was in some ways worse than the homeland as the Irish were looked down upon and not accepted socially or religiously in the New World. By 1880 the Irish and their nativeborn children represented nearly one-third of Boston’s population. In the late 1800s, with banks refusing to lend money to the Irish to buy homes in the city, Irish families began moving to the South Shore where opportunity and land ownership were plentiful. What began in Braintree quickly spread to Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Marshfield and Duxbury. Soon after the region was referred to as the “Irish Riviera”. Scituate is the most “Irish Town in America” where nearly 50% of its residents have Irish Heritage. Sixteen Communities in the South Shore have the highest percentage of people of Irish descent in the United States. The state of Massachusetts’s Irish population accounts for nearly 25% of its 6.8 million residents. • All the Best,
