Some Thoughts for the New Season BY TIMOTHY BRANCO Spring has finally opened the door to the 2018 golf season here in the Northeast. In May, we had Golf / Ski Resorts in New England for the first time in many years offering a single pass for skiing and golf on the same day. While this may be common for Tahoe or Hawaii, it is rare here in the Northeast. At the Players Championship Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ricky Fowler were paired together for the opening two rounds, the crowds and the TV ratings soared. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are two players that move the needle in golf. Over the past 26 years in golf, Tiger and Phil combined have won over 120 Tour events. It is incredible that Phil who will be 48 in June has 6 top 10 finishes and already a win this year at the WGC Mexico. He will most likely be a lock for the Ryder Cup in France this Fall. Tiger Woods at 42 years old has had 3 top 10 finishes and was just one back in March at the Valspar Championship. Tiger is still searching for the confidence and mental toughness that made him so dominant in the past. It seems every week there is another new face on the Tour chasing their first PGA Tour win making it even more difficult for both Tiger and Phil to win. A New book just released by Chris Rodell on the life of Arnold Palmer gives a very unique perspective on the personal life of the King. It is called, Arnold Palmer

Homespun Stories of The King and provides a very close-up view of the impact Mr. Palmer had on so many people over his lifetime. The things he did and people he touched had an immeasurable effect on the lives of thousands around the world. The book brings you inside the moments that shaped one of the most iconic heroes of golf and life the world has ever known. I am one who was blessed to have had a few moments with Mr. Palmer that I cherish and will never forget, and yes, I too was touched by his magic and charisma.

Rhode Island: The Ocean State Here’s a question that’s a drink winner after a round every time. What state has the highest concentration of golf courses per square mile? And, the answer is Rhode Island with 56 courses on only 1500 square miles. I 95 cuts right through Rhode Island along the coast and is blessed with great golf and great communities to visit. Providence is a city known for its Italian restaurants on Federal Hill and throughout the city. You can’t go anywhere in this tiny state without running into a golf

course and most are spectacular. Spend some time in Providence at the historic Biltmore Hotel, and play Triggs Memorial another great Donald Ross design. Hit the Hill for drinks and dinner a short walk from the Biltmore; stop in at one of the local Italian bakeries for decadent pastries like cannolis and zeppoles. Head over to the East Bay through historic Bristol RI, home of America’s Cup Yachts, the Herreshoff Marine Museum, and the nation’s longest continuously-run Independence Day celebration. PARALLELS BETWEEN LIFE AND THE GAME OF GOLF ABOUND. TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE AND IN GOLF, WE MUST TRY TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY MENTAL FRAMEWORK AND PERSPECTIVE IN ORDER TO NAVIGATE SOMETIMES-UNFORESEEN HAZARDS.

Golf can teach us a lot about adjusting our goals and expectations when things don’t go the way we planned. I might tee off with the objective of making par on a hole, but if my tee shot lands in the woods, requiring me to play out into the fairway, my objective might change to making bogey. The challenge is to stay focused, try not to let calamities unravel you, and manage your expectations. We can’t replay holes or shots. As Ben Hogan once remarked, “the most important shot in golf is the next one.” I learned that life does not always go as planned. I once appeared headed to the pinnacle of the legal world in Washington, D.C., but encountered severe episodes of clinical depression – the treacherous water hazards of mental illness.

Ultimately, I plummeted into a dark abyss of hopelessness from which I very nearly did not emerge. But I restarted my life in New England, where I rekindled the soul that had withered away. I found happiness in connecting with people who did not judge me by my career status but by who I was as a person. And I rediscovered the game of golf. I spent many summer evenings walking the wonderful Donald Ross layout at Petersham Country Club -- often by myself -- developing a satisfying harmony with my game and my inner self. My favorite spot was the fourth tee, perched on a knoll with a breathtaking view of the course and the surrounding valley. Those serene evenings marked an important threshold in my life: I had fully emerged from the

darkness, and was living again. I rebounded by adjusting my expectations and goals for my life. I had to come to terms with who I was, fundamentally, as a person – my values, gifts and passions. The answers emerged gradually but unmistakably. I was able to combine my passions for golf and writing. Although I suffered a series of quadruple bogeys (or worse) in the middle of my round, I learned that it was still possible to finish the course. By the lofty standards of Washington, I might have ballooned from shooting a 68 to a 90, but I now feel like I’m even par for life. I have dealt with some pretty nasty bunkers and water hazards and am still in the game. Tragically, my youngest son isn’t. He would have graduated from Yale this

He was on a path to shoot 59, and, I think, was imprisoned by a mindset that nothing less than that score was acceptable. These relentless expectations generated anxiety and depression. He took his life in October 2016. His round can’t be restarted. I wish that Hale had understood that he could have worked through those bad holes and completed his round. He was a kind and compassionate soul loved by all, and the course of life would be a vastly better place if he were still playing. Hogan said that “golf is a game of misses, and those who miss the best win.” Suicide is the ultimate miss.
