The Roaring 20’s Are Back! Golf’s Huge Comeback

T

HE LAST DECADE by all measures has been a challenge for the golf industry. Declining revenues, additional course closures, private club challenges, increased operations cost and a general lack of interest had a huge impact on the game’s popularity. As we head into 2020 there is much to be positive about as golf just may have finally found a new beginning that will make the next decade one of the best ever. Golf is an $84 billion industry that is adapting to cultural and behavioral shifts, like many other aspects of society. If “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”, then reinvention will always be the key to maintaining relevance and need. Against all traditions and age-old stubborn logic, golf has evolved and found new life. Golfers play, watch, engage and consume the game in different ways than in years past. Their spending habits are changing too, not only what they’re buying, but how they’re buying and how often they’re buying. Over the last decade the largest ambassador of the game, Tiger Woods, was removed from the limelight. There were plenty of great players that entered the game but none that had the Woods, Palmer, Nicklaus type impact on the growth of the game. Tiger Woods coming back to the winner’s circle, especially his major at the Masters and leadership at the Presidents Cup in December of 2019 has brought golf back to the world limelight. But golf’s resurgence is deeper than one person now and is rebuilt on innovation, relevance and most of all inclusion.

“If Necessity is the Mother of Invention,” then reinvention will always be the key to maintaining relevance and need. Since 2011 almost 750 golf facilities were closed leading most to think golf was in a deep decline as a sport. During the same period, new forms of golf like disc golf and foot golf tested the waters of reinvention. But it is the newest emerging trend that has quickly taken the industry by storm that has had the greatest impactalternative golf facilities. Over 2300 practice facilities, indoor golf centers, majestic TopGolf entertainment venues, and golf learning centers have brought over 1.5 billion in revenue back into the golf industry raising golf participation to over 33.5 million from 24 billion, an increase of over 30%. More importantly, alternative golf for all age groups and genders has become the number one seeding platform for golf. In 2018 and 2019, heavier precipitation levels than normal across the country had a major impact on golf course revenues. But for the first time in 14 years, golf rounds increased. Golf’s total reach of 107 million overall is noteworthy, representing more than one-third (36%) of the U.S. population over the age of five who play, watch, volunteer or are interested in the game.

As timeless and legendary

a destination as Pinehurst is within the history of golf, the question usually being asked these days by savvy golf travelers is: What’s the next new thing happening in the Pinehurst area of North Carolina? This globally-recognized destination is certainly not resting on its laurels as new ones have recently been added to the list of accolades. Golf Digest currently ranks Pinehurst No. 4 second in America among its list for “Best New Public Golf Courses.” The Gil Hanse redesign has received dozens of accolades since the revamped course was unveiled in the fall of 2018. Plus, the venerable Pinehurst No. 2 has risen to 16th on Golf.com’s 2020-21 World’s Top 100 list. Last summer, those two courses played host to the 119th U.S. Amateur and became the first facility in the history of the event to host the final championship matches.

Legacy Golf Links

While those historic courses are surely on any golfer’s bucket list when they visit the Sandhills region of North Carolina, there are a total of 38 courses within a 15-mile radius that allow golfers of all skill levels and budgets to score an ace whether you are playing as a single, couple, buddy trip, or girls golf getaway. The historic Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club has been renovating their hotel guestrooms as well. The Manor Inn, part of Pinehurst Resort, completed a full renovation this past fall – a complete transformation from the hotel that was originally build in 1923. Golf is primarily why people flock to the Pinehurst area and have for more than 125 years. About 75 percent of the courses are rated 4-stars or better by Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” In 2019, out of nearly 600 golf courses throughout North Carolina, courses in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen area earned 17 spots in the list of Top 100 Golf

Some of the more popular courses include Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, a Donald Ross course recently renovated by Kyle Franz and a venue that will host the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open and their sister course, Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, which is a step back in time on an expertly manicured Ross gem. Other great golf recommendations include Talamore Golf Resort, Mid South Club, Tobacco Road, Legacy Golf Links, Longleaf Golf & Family Club and Southern Pines Golf Club. Off the course, there are four craft breweries in the destination, including the newest, Hatchet Brewing in Southern Pines. Railhouse Brewery in Aberdeen and Southern Pines Brewing Company are popular favorites and create some of the best craft beers around. Pinehurst Brewing Company is a must visit on any trip to the area, offering great beer and BBQ, all retrofitted into an old steam plant that originally opened in 1895 and once powered the entire Village of Pinehurst. Dining options are abundant with amazing farm to table dining from places like Elliott’s on Linden, Ashten’s, Ironwood, and Curt’s Cucina. Add to that a variety of local shopping options in the Village of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen and throughout Moore County, and a spring golf vacation to the Home of American Golf is on the list of things to do in 2020. DESTINATIONS ABACO CLUB

Building on Hope IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE DORIAN, THE ABACO CLUB COUNTS ITS BLESSINGS When Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas on Labor Day, 2019, it left death and destruction in its wake. In Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco, and at the Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club on Great Guana Cay, the destruction was almost total. Yet just 18 miles away, The Abaco Club fared well enough to reopen in just a matter of weeks. Hurricanes are fickle that way. But what began as a tragedy has become an inspirational tale of overcoming obstacles and building on hope. In the week after Dorian struck, the focus of everyone at The Abaco Club was on the safety of its 178 employees, their families and the other island residents. The club

destruction that Baker’s Bay and other Abaco businesses did, it was able to reopen on October 30. More than 60 club members returned to the island that weekend to lend their support and give hugs to the employees—their longtime friends. It was a glorious celebration, capped off by the grand opening of The Abaco Yacht Club in nearby Little Harbour. This beautiful new marina facility had been under development by the club for over a year, and like the club’s homes, its sensational golf course, and its other luxury amenities, it fared much better in the destructive winds than other parts of the island did. “We’re very optimistic about the future of Abaco—and the future of The

ways—from purchasing a mobile medical unit for the island’s doctor to securing dozens of brand-new trailer homes for club employees to live in while their homes are being rebuilt. “You prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” said David Southworth, Founder and CEO of Southworth Development, an affiliate of which owns The Abaco Club. “In this case, it was nothing short of a miracle that all the club’s staff members survived. That’s the thing we’re most grateful for. The club itself was lucky to have been spared the very worst of Dorian. But without our staff, The Abaco Club is just some really nice homes and a beach.” Today, Marsh Harbour is recovering. The airport reopened to U.S. flights in December, and because The Abaco Club didn’t suffer the kind of catastrophic

We’re just grateful to be playing a role in the renaissance taking place, and to be helping the people of Abaco create the kind of future they deserve.” Much more will need to be done to restore the town of Marsh Harbour to the vibrant place it once was. But at The Abaco Club, they’re welcoming new guests, new club members, and new island home buyers with open arms. Most importantly, they’re helping lead the way toward a time when Hurricane Dorian will be but a distant memory. To contribute to the Abaco-Winding Bay Relief Fund, go to: TheAbacoClub.com

The USGA expects 100,000 people to descend upon Newport June 25-28 during the peak of the Newport tourist season. “It’s not like throwing a family reunion,” said championship director Hank Thompson. “I like to say it’s a big jigsaw puzzle, where you take all these pieces and start fitting them together. I think the Senior Open will be a great fit for Newport.” Club president Barclay Douglas Jr. remarked that “our ‘City by the Sea’ will

be enhanced by having the world’s best senior players compete on our historic Tillinghast course.” Redesigned by Tillinghast in 1923, winds are always a factor on the scenic seaside course. Sorenstam observed that “course management will be key, along with the ability to control your ball under windy conditions.” Some of golf’s luminaries will have hit the 50-year eligibility mark for the Senior Open for the first time this year: Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, K.J. Choi, and Angel Cabrera. All the more reason to make the trek to Newport in June. Rounding out the 2020 Northeast championship circuit, venerable Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, CT will host the U.S. Senior Women’s Open July 9-12. Brooklawn was founded in 1895, and in 1930 hired Tillinghast to design an 18-hole course. The club has hosted five USGA championships, including the 1979 U.S. Women’s Open and the 1987 U.S. Senior Open.

The Senior Women’s Open is the newest USGA championship, inaugurated in 2018. “To have Brooklawn Country Club host our newest championship is truly special for the USGA family and will continue to build the strong momentum we have created,” said USGA senior managing director John Bodenhamer. Rick Ryan, Brooklawn’s championship chairman, noted: “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our club’s 125th anniversary than hosting this significant USGA championship.” So mark your calendars, buy your tickets and take advantage of this opportunity to experience championship golf at some of the Northeast’s most prestigious venues. You won’t be disappointed.
