Is It The Year of The Tiger Once Again Golf Ratings Soar with Woods Return
BY TIMOTHY BRANCO For the last 8 years, overall interest and the audience for golf has steadily declined. The effect of all of this has had a major impact on the golf industry. The question is and always has been, if Tiger returns will this all change, the answer is a resounding yes! If he can stay healthy all of golf will celebrate his return and the game once again will see a resurgence. The return of Tiger Woods to the game began somewhat quietly in December of 2017 at the Hero World Challenge but now after his 6th event, he has 5 top 25 finishes and nearly won at the Valspar Championship. Beginning at the Farmers Insurance Open in January, golf ratings have increased week over week. In March at the Valspar Championship, the ratings were the best of any PGA Tour event in many years. And at Bay Hill, it was once again much of the same with Tiger in contention on Sunday. Tiger Woods was born December 30th in 1975 in Southern California. In 1977 Tiger beat Bob Hope in a putting contest, he was only 2 years old. At 16 years old Tiger played in his first PGA Tour event, the Los Angeles Open. Over the next 3 years, Tiger played as a teenager in 11 tour events until he began his professional career in 1996 which arguably began the most storied golf career in the history of the game. In total Tiger Woods has over 135 wins as an amateur and professional through 2017. Tiger won his last PGA Tour event on August 4th, 2013 at the WGCBridgestone Invitational. With the way Tiger is playing today, there is little doubt he will win again. The 2018 Masters is on the horizon and for the first time since 2015 Tiger will tee it up. In his last 15 appearances at the Masters, Tiger has won 3 times and finished in the top 5 eleven times. I would not be surprised to see his name at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday at Augusta National. There is a smile on Tigers face again that we have not seen in years. It is shared by fans across the golf world and throughout the industry. The conversation in golf has now changed from will Tiger ever win again to when will Tiger win. If Tiger Woods is able to maintain his health and ability to compete, he will once again have a major impact on fan interest and growth of the game, and yes, he will win another Major as well.

COUNTRY CLUB OF NEW BEDFORD PLAY & PRACTICE The Country Club of New Bedford is one of the premier 18hole golf courses in the New England area. The Donald Rossdesigned course is located in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and features just over 6,400 yards of championship golf at a par-70. This is not your typical Par 70 though. There is only one par 5, three par 3s and water hazards are limited to just one hole. The course consists of narrow fairways and even more challenging approach shots typical of Donald Ross green complexes. There are several holes at Country Club of New Bedford that could be considered the signature hole, but the one that stands out the most is hole No. 12. The 12th hole is a downhill par 4. It plays about 380. The emphasis is the tee shot and then from there it’s a downhill shot into the green. Once on the putting surface, you’ve only solved half the battle because the green is very undulating. Every shot you need to practice around the green can be achieved in the short game practice area. Country Club of New Bedford is a perfect course for the golfer who loves a challenge, great greens and fast rounds! Home to one of the oldest Four Ball Tournaments in the country. CCNB also offers clinics, camps, and lessons.
FOOD & BEVERAGE The Country Club of New Bedford offers inside and outside dining. Home to a spacious, yet intimate Club House that has been recently remodeled to be more modern. The amazing food that comes out of the kitchen is an added bonus! Not only pleasing to the eye, each dish is rich with flavor and made to order. The Club 1902 offers the prefect atmosphere after a round or to watch a game with specialty seasonal brews on tap, all your favorite spirits and wines! Menus for Lunch, Dinner, Lounge, Bereavement, Showers, Golf Outings, Banquets and Hors D’oeuvres can all be found on their website.

Putters New 2018 Models BY ED TRAVIS
Argolf Merlin - $399 Classic blade shape modernized with a groove-less face and zero-offset shaft. Milled head is heavier at 380s grams making total club weight 560 grams. Weight distribution creates strong toe-down.
Bloodline R1-J/ RG-1 - $499.00 Grip integrated with carbon fiber shaft in either blade (R1-J) or mallet (RG-1). Weighted and balanced so putter will stand by itself allowing player to adjust aim from behind rather than in address position as with other putters.
Cleveland TFI 2135 Series - $150 Three mallets and two blades all with raised a raised alignment aid the same radius as the ball. Each shape is Speed Optimized milled and has a polymer insert behind face.

The proper putter is one that both fits your natural stroke by allowing the face to square up at impact and a shape that “fits your eye.” Each year dozens of models hit the market from large and small manufacturers each hoping to attract players with their uniqueness and performance. Northeast Golf surveyed the most recently available models and here are the ones we like the most.
Bettinardi Golf BB Series - $300 Update of popular BB1 shape with Flymill milling of face, a traditional heel-toe BB29 with Super-Fly face milling and the B56 mallet milled from 6061 military grade aluminum. All have Stealth Black finish.
Brainstorm Golf Happy - $130 Either blade or mallet, each comes with three alignment guides and two sets of sole weights so putter can be built to fit player’s eye alignment tendency.
Cure CX 2018 Series - $280 Two five-inch-long blade shapes with six removable weights in black, platinum or red finish and two mallets, also five-inches long, with eight removable weights in black or red finish.
Edel Golf Torque Balanced - $330 Nine models (three mallets, six blades), all 345 grams with 12-gram weight included. Double bend counterweighted shaft to fit alignment tendency. Choice of three finishes: Gold, Black and Platinum.
Odyssey O-Works Red & Black - $199 Red has choice of nine shapes and Black 16, all with the Microhinge face insert co-molded into an elastomer layer. Designs include the popular two-ball and a wide variety of shaft configurations.
SeeMore mini Giant Stealth Deep Flange - $395 SeeMore alignment system in the mini Giant shape but with a deeper flange and four sets on non-adjustable copper weights in heel and toe. Two finishes, platinum or black.
Titleist Scotty Cameron Futura 5.5M - $379 Compact mallet 10% smaller than the 7M and shorter single bend shaft with more toe hang. Wrap around face-sole mid-milled from aircraft aluminum with stainless steel body.

The whole idea of carrying wedges is to hit the ball close to the hole, close enough so that making the putt becomes more likely. Most players don’t realize that wedges should be fitted to your swing, course conditions and that in addition to wedge loft the leading-edge bounce and sole grind are major factors. Lofts should be selected to produce 10 to 15 yards difference in distance starting with the pitching wedge which most often came with your set of irons. For example, if your pitching wedge is 46 degrees then adding wedges of 50, 54 and 58 degrees makes sense. If conditions at your course are firm think in terms of low bounce and if soft, higher bounce will be a help. Similarly, the proper sole grind will help you hit a variety of scoring shots especially close around the green. Every year, lots of new wedges are introduced to the market. For 2018, here are a few of the newest that we like.
Cleveland Golf CBX - $130 Forgiving cavity back construction with Dual-V sole and Rotex Tour Zip laser milled grooves. Hosel has microcavity that moves center of gravity closer to center of face. Eight lofts and bounce angles.

Mizuno S18 – $150 High strength forged clubhead with head shape, sole grind and bounce matched to loft. Higher lofts have mass higher in head which has beveled top line. Seven lofts from 46 to 60 degrees. White Satin or Gen Metal finishes.

New Golf Balls for the New Season By ED TRAVIS
Bridgestone Golf Tour B series - $45 X, XS 3-piece urethane 330-dimple cover with gradational core. RX, RXS 3-piece urethane 388-dimple cover with lower compression core. S models have more spin than X models and all have SlipRes cover.
Ball fitting is as important as club fitting and selecting the right ball starts with making a side by side comparison of several different models. Choose two or three whose price is in your comfort zone and see what the differences are for the scoring shots‌chips, pitches and ones from less than 100-yard. You will soon be able to evaluate how easily each ball is to control and spin to the correct distance. After you are satisfied with the scoring shot differences hit some mid irons and then back to the longer clubs including tee shots. Here the differences will most likely be less obvious, but one model may standout. That’s all it takes, just an hour of time and you will be playing with a ball that helps you make lower scores. Here is information on the latest of the new golf balls that we believe are worth evaluating.
Cut Golf Blue - $20 4-piece 338-dimple urethane cover with 90 compression. High spin core and mantle.
Callaway Golf Chrome Soft/Chrome Soft X - $45 4-piece dual core with graphene in outer core so inner core can made larger. Urethane cover with HEX dimple pattern. Chrome Soft softer feel with more forgiveness, Chrome Soft X more workable.

2019 Will Bring
Major Changes to the Rules of Golf
AFTER STUDYING VOLUMINOUS FEEDBACK ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE RULES OF GOLF ANNOUNCED LAST YEAR, THE USGA AND THE R&A RECENTLY RELEASED THE FINAL VERSION OF THE SWEEPING CHANGES THAT WILL BECOME EFFECTIVE IN 2019. THE FIRST MAJOR OVERHAUL OF THE RULES IN OVER THIRTY YEARS IS INTENDED TO MAKE THEM MORE CONSISTENT, SIMPLE, AND EASILY UNDERSTOOD, AS WELL AS TO ENCOURAGE FASTER PACE OF PLAY.
To make the rules more accessible and user-friendly for the average golfer, the USGA and R&A will issue both a formal rule book and an explanation written from the

Ball Moved During Search. A player will not be penalized for accidentally moving a ball while searching for it. The ball must be replaced as near as possible to the original spot.
Causing ball on green to move. Players will no longer be penalized for causing their ball to move on a putting green. (A local rule implementing this change has been authorized since 2017.)
Ball Striking Flagstick While Putting. Players will no longer be penalized if a ball played from the putting green strikes the flagstick in the hole. This change is intended to speed play; players facing long putts will not have to wait for someone

to tend the flagstick, and short putts may be tapped in without removing the flagstick. Moving loose impediments in bunkers. Players will be permitted to touch and move loose impediments bunkers and touch the sand with a club or other object, provided that they do not (1) test the condition of the sand, or (2) touch the sand while making a practice swing, grounding the club, or making a backswing.

Simplified dropping procedure. The procedure for dropping a ball under the current rules was deemed to be overly complicated. Under the new rules, the ball must be dropped from knee height and come to rest in a relief area measured one
or two club-lengths from a reference point. Repairing damage on green. Players will be permitted to repair all types of damage on the green (not just ball marks as under the current rule), including shoe damage, indentations from a club or flagstick, or animal damage. Aeration holes or natural surface imperfections may not be repaired, and any permitted repair may not unreasonably delay play.

YOUR GAME. ONLY BETTER. Searching for lost balls. The time permitted for searching for a lost ball has been reduced from five minutes to three minutes. Touching loose impediments and grounding club in penalty areas. A player will not be penalized for touching or removing loose impediments, or grounding the club, in a “penalty area” (a term that replaces “water hazards”). Alternative maximum scores form of stroke play. The new rules will authorize an alternative form of stroke play (limited to recreational or
club play) whereby players will record no higher than a specified maximum number of strokes per hole, allowing players to pick up on a hole and avoid disqualification. Local rule mitigating strokeand-distance penalty. Although the USGA and R&A declined to eliminate the stroke-and-distance penalty for balls that are lost or come to rest out of bounds. The new rules authorize a local rule to provide an alternative for recreational play. Players utilizing this option are subject to a twostroke penalty.

“I've yet to play a ball that has the versatility of the ELIXR™ OnCore golf ball. The ball is extremely hot coming off the driver face and has given me more ball speed, but it has an extremely soft touch around the greens to execute any type of shot that I may need.”
Michael Hebert web.com tour “I have played professional golf for 37 years. As I have aged, I have been searching for a golf ball that can make up the distance I’ve lost, without sacrificing the soft feel around the greens. The ELIXR™ gave me 12 extra yards off the tee and was actually softer around the greens than other top brands. I was truly amazed at the results. Finally, a ball that goes further and is easy to control. Well done to the developer and all his staff! I think this ball will win a Major in the next 2-3 years.”
