Simulators today offer all aspects of the game outdoors on grass, including putting, chipping, sand, and all the rest.

The Death of Golf’s Off Season

I

F YOU CHERISHED THE AGE of putting your clubs away for the season, you have my condolences; it officially has passed! There will be no dust or cobwebs, no dried-out wrinkled-up golf gloves, crinkled-up hats that wintered over in your side bag pocket, and best of all, no rust in your game to shake off in the spring. Like the typewriter and fax machine, the off-season of golf is no more and for one, I am ready to skip the eulogy and just move on. Welcome to winter, no yard work, outdoor projects or cookouts to go to – It’s Indoor Golf and Fitness Season and it has never been better with more indoor golf facilities, more simulators, more courses to play, and plenty of leagues Newport Indoor Golf and tournaments. You can play Pebble Beach in two hours with your favorite foursome while watching the PGA Tour, NFL football, NHL Hockey while eating and having your favorite cocktail. Gone also are the days of less than realistic indoor golf. Simulators today offer all aspects of the game outdoors on grass, including putting, chipping, sand, and all the rest. If you think it’s cool to watch the PGA Tour’s shot tracker at every event on TV, then actually watching your shot being tracked with every imaginable stat on every swing is even better. You can even capture data, play competitions and tournaments against players all over the world and

even have a full player profile with all your rounds and stats shot by shot on an app on your phone. There were almost 37 million rounds of golf played in the U.S. last year, with over 12 million played indoors on simulators and golf entertainment centers. On your next winter golf trip, you will not only be amazed by the transition from very cold and grey to very warm and green, but also you will notice another great thing, mid-season form in your golf game. Not putting your golf swing away for the winter has distinct advantages and you will be amazed at the result. So now there are no excuses, no early seasons, no grove to search for, just the front door of your local Indoor Golf & Fitness Center and a tee time, yes, they’re still called tee times. Swing On, Play Through and Play Away….. Go Play! Be Your Best!

Golf

was a game conceived to play outdoors, exposed to the variables of weather and playing conditions. If Scotland is truly the home of golf, then they could not have picked a much more difficult place to invent and play this game. In most regions in the world today, weather makes it very difficult, and in many cases, impossible to play golf for nearly half of the calendar year. The invention of indoor golf has forever changed how we play the game and our ability to play anywhere, at any time, with anyone; it is truly amazing.

Norman Golf, the natural evolution was to create golf games that gave golfers a larger than life, experience. The next step was giving people the ability to hit real clubs and balls while delivering accurate measurements

next in interactive technology in golf and entertainment systems. Golf simulation and ball tracking has come a long way since the days of Microsoft Golf 1998. Revolutionary technology has allowed aboutGOLF to progress from radar in 2002 to the state-of-the-art machine vision tech they use in their simulators today. Golf simulator accuracy is determined by three main factors. First, is golf ball spin measured, or estimated. Second, how does the ball interact with the digital world after it has been struck. Finally, realistic interaction between the ball and the physical objects that it collides with on the course. At aG, they’ve been developing technology that puts a premium on accurate measurement and physics for over twenty years. Every aboutGOLF sim is custom built with 3Trak© technology that measures the three-dimensional position of the golf ball with stereo vision (multiple cameras) in the first few feet of flight after being hit by the golf club. These high-performance cameras use proprietary machine vision technology to precisely track every shot. From world long drive champions hitting drives at speeds of more than 220 miles per hour to short putts rolling at a leisurely 2 MPH, the tech was built from the ground up to ensure that every shot is measured and interacts with the digital golf course the same way you would expect to see it in the real world.

Indoor Golf:

aG Curve with Putting Green

Growing the Game Inside Out Golf, Competition, Training, Entertainment & Fitness

I

IT WAS ONLY 3 DECADES AGO that golf was just a seasonal game. In 1990 nearly 65% of all public and private golf courses in North America were closed for play from 3 months to 6 months annually. In fact, 20 out of 25 of the states with the most golfers per capita fell into seasonal limited play. Most players simply put away their clubs until spring of the next year. Off-season golf trips here and there in the winter months only reminded them that golf is a game you have to focus on to maintain skill levels. It is the primary reason professional golfers live in regions where they can play and practice year-round.

The passion that surrounds the game of golf for everyone who has caught the bug, is pretty much the same. Watching golf on TV is great and we all love it, but it is for the most part, well short of the real experience of playing. Golf is a very personal chess game, much like life and it has to be played out to complete the process. It was only a matter of time and technology for this problem to be solved by some of the best visionary minds in and around the game. Much like computers, cell phones, and other advances in our history, the creation and acceptance of indoor golf have certainly arrived and it’s spectacular. Much like the game itself, once you have tried it, you’re hooked.

The earliest tales of indoor golf date back to 1890 in Ireland, when a group of Royal Dublin Golf Club members known as the” Syndicate” ventured by boat to a small island in Dublin and founded The Island Golf Club. With no structures for a

clubhouse, the small group acquired a large military tent to gather in. During inclement weather, white chalk circles were drawn on the back wall of the tent to practice hitting shots while enjoying libations. As the tale goes this was the first indoor hitting space in the game of golf, a primitive but effective solution to Ireland’s bitter weather for golf with refreshments. In the late 70’s simple indoor golf hitting nets and basic simulators with hitting screens were developed. There was little or no ability for measurement or accuracy, but microphones were used for target tracking. In the 1990’s as technology advanced, engineers began to design and build more

advanced indoor golf systems using optical sensors that measured pinpoint landing areas, ball spin, axis of exit, speed and trajectory. Soon after gaming software, which was emerging for all sports, was added to provide a more realistic experience. In 1989 Sony Corporation registered a patent on a golf gaming simulator invented by Bruce Hutchon using both a mechanical arm and options for players hitting golf shots; it was later abandoned. In the late 1990’s and at the turn of the century, numerous companies began to develop products for indoor golf simulation systems. Nearly 20 years ago at the PGA

Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, advanced technology full-scope golf simulators were on display for the first time. Golf professionals, golf clubs, resorts, and golf entertainment venues got an opportunity to test fully integrated simulators that offered advanced technology and accurate measurement and stats. It was a major hit at every level for residential and commercial applications in golf. It was the beginning of an industry that would boom in the next two decades, as dozens of companies entered the indoor golf simulator business offering a full suite of custom services.

Technology improved design and advanced engineering today allow golfers to play indoor golf in a golf simulator much like they play on a real golf course. They can play courses from all over the world and many famous courses that they otherwise would never get to play. The technical advancements have turned a practice tool into a way, players can experience a full round of golf without ever leaving a room. This makes it possible to do far more than simply practice your swing to see how far and accurately you can hit any particular kind of shot. You can now hit a variety of shots using different clubs and still get a very accurate readout of how NORTHE AS T.GOLF | D ECE MB E R 2021 / JAN UARY 2022

well you’re playing. From your tee shot to fairway shots, bunker shots, and short game chipping and putting, it’s all realistic, accurate, and offers more insight and information for game improvement than any on-course experience.

The Expanded Experience In the game of golf, we all face choices. One of the most common is to be on the course during major golf events or watch the event on TV from the comfort of our home and take in all the moments. It used to be a very difficult choice for us all, but indoor golf today offers us an opportunity

to play golf while enjoying watching golf at any time of the year, in any weather, with all of our friends and family. What could be better than watching the Players Championship while playing the same course the tournament is being held on, in our home, our club, or a nearby indoor golf entertainment center? Indoor golf has expanded our opportunities to play, train, improve, and enjoy the game we love so much. Today with cloud-based data and apps you can compete with others anywhere, be a part of indoor leagues, share rounds and information on your game, and play in regional and

There were almost 37 million Americans who played golf in 2020, over 12 million played in off-course facilities. This means one-third of all players are playing golf fully or partially indoors. In addition, over 100 million people in the country carry a strong interest in the game and follow golf, which is nearly 1/3 of our Nation’s population. With only 16,000 golf facilities in the country for the first time in history, golf has an available inventory problem, there are simply more golfers than prime open tee times available. With private country clubs making up nearly 20% of all clubs and golf resorts accounting for 5%, only 12,000 clubs have public access of some kind. Indoor golf has not only arrived, but it has arrived at the most opportune time in the history of the game. Indoor golf has removed the stigma and intimidation of playing on a real golf course for so many that want to learn to play the game.

What we’ve seen for years, and are seeing today, is a lot of spending on consulting and design, deficient planning, and a surprisingly consistent lack of ability to obtain the right knowledge from which to make intelligent design and buying decisions. This has led me to launch Clarity, which provides private golf facilities and their members a resource for best practices and procedures to follow as well as recommendations for various applications. One of the indoor golf simulators large growth sectors is private and semi-private golf facilities and resorts for new review streams and extended seasons.

Indoor Golf & Entertainment Centers There are nearly 100 huge golf entertainment centers by Topgolf, Bigshots, Drive Shack, and others that pack golfers in for a golf-like entertainment experience with dining and celebrations. In the next year, the industry model is expected to grow by over 50% nationwide. In 1990, there were no indoor golf centers in the New England market. Today there are over 50 indoor golf businesses and over 500 golf simulators in homes, golf clubs, sports facilities, and resorts. The residential market will see the largest growth with systems offering more features and more competitive pricing for in-home indoor golf simulators. The key element of indoor simulators’ popularity in homes is the expanded applications and uses. Indoor golf simulators offer home theatre, multiple sports applications, TV viewing, work centers for meetings, and interactive health and fitness suites. In a sense, simulators are becoming family activity and entertainment centers. Once mostly found in garages and other remote areas, today’s home simulators are front and center in the home and part of the integral living space.

Industry Professionals Insights One of the top experts in golf simulators is Bill Bales of Clarity.Golf. Bill shared some insights with Northeast Golf recently. Bill said, “I have seen this industry emerge from its conception. As the founder of aboutGOLF, I was at ground level with the technology, design, building and installation of over 4000 indoor golf systems. Like any planned project in a home, golf club, or golf entertainment venue the first and most important thing is proper planning. Golf simulators are often squeezed into areas that are not viable for best-case outcomes.

The Rise of Indoor Golf How technology is changing the way we train

A

S AN INSTRUCTOR, I’ve always been fascinated by technology and how it can help players improve.

In 2010, I moved to Miami and learned directly under Jim McLean for 3 years. Jim was one of the first to get TrackMan, which was the latest technology at the time. TrackMan gave golfers an inside look into their golf swing by measuring exactly what happened at impact. Jim and I studied the differences between amateurs and professionals and eventually wrote a book together on how to help players improve with this technology.

I believe we are at the beginning of a major boom in indoor golf due to the advancement in technology, like TrackMan, and the continued growth in the game. Of course, nothing will ever replace the experience of playing outside, but there’s so much you can now do indoors. Do you want to get fit for a new driver? Do you want to play a quick 9? Need a lesson? All these things can be done indoors, and done well, with the right technology. From a performance standpoint, practicing indoors has many advantages. You are in a controlled environment with feedback that can be tailored depending on what you’re working on. Outside on the range, your feedback is the ball flight and

what you thought you did in your swing. If you’re not careful, this can open the door to working on the wrong things if you misdiagnose your swing. For many years I knew the importance of feedback during the improvement process, which is why I opened Pure Drive Golf in 2018. My vision was to blend the highest quality instruction with the best available technology and build an environment where serious golfers could train all aspects of their game. My staff and I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity we have helping golfers in the Boston area improve their game. It will be exciting in the years to come as we continue to grow the Pure Drive community alongside the growth of the game.

Different Strokes for Different Folks – Making Putting Perfect PuttOUT Tour Studio

The Tour Studio from PuttOUT is a 12-foot by 3-foot mat with graphics to aid correct alignment, five targets marked on the surface and measured 10-foot markings. The training system’s primary tool is the Premium Pressure Putt Trainer, a cup sized parabolically curved ramp with a “micro-target” on the slope that stops the ball when it is struck with exactly the proper speed and line. Missed putts roll up the ramp are returned to the player by the Trainer the same distance as they would have travelled past the hole. For added help the Trainer has a small hole to fit an included alignment stick that extends down the line of the putt. The Tour Studio comes with a PuttOUT Putting Mirror having an anti-scratch coating and steel base, plus there are training gates to aid starting the ball on the correct line.

The complete Tour Studio is $475.99.

M

uch has been written over the years about putting— proper alignment, stance, setup plus how to hold the club and the best club grip and then there’s the weighting of the head and shaft…should it be face balanced or toe down and if toe down how much? How about the path of the stroke? Should it be straight back to straight through or back to the inside, squaring at the ball and finishing with the putter travelling back to the inside? Oh, did I mention shaft length and how it affects everything about how you putt?

PRO SHOP PUTTING GREENS

The topic of putting is studied by some for an entire lifetime and even they readily admit they still don’t know everything there is to know. When you have some time find a putting “guru” and ask him or her about ball compression, cover hardness, Surlyn versus urethane and how the type of a face insert changes the roll. We at Northeast Golf however are sure of one truth about putting. The more you practice the better you will become and hopefully be able to answer some of these questions for your game. When the weather cooperates a beneficial practice routine can be as simple as an hour after work at your local club but for much of the year it is too cold or snowing or just plain unpleasant spending time outdoors when you have to be dressed as though you were going skiing rather than putting. An indoor practice putting mat is a solution and those with realistic surfaces that give feedback similar to a real putting green will make a difference to your putting whether you are looking to never miss a three-footer or two putt every time from over 20 feet. Here is a selection of several models covering a range of prices to fit most any budget.

48

Birdieball – Classic Indoor Putting Green The base is made from a patented ½-inch thick aerated foam and a surface that putts like real grass. The Classic offers practice into and against

the grain and the five sizes (4 feet x 10 feet to 4 feet x 18 feet) come with a choice of three speeds from slow to medium to fast. Corresponding Stimpmeter readings are respectively 9-10, 10-11 and 11-13. Included are six precut holes with cups and flags and rubber bumpers for each end which form a U-shape to contain the ball. Also in the package are six shims to create breaking putts over the entire length of the putt or just around the cup and there are six reducers that decrease hole diameter to improve accuracy. The Classic rolls up for storage and lays flat when unrolled and Birdieball also adds to the package a putting mirror for help with alignment and eye positioning. The 4 feet x 10 feet model is $311.98 while the largest, 4 feet x 18 feet, is $398.98.

PRO SHOP PUTTING GREENS

The Green Monster assembles and disassembles without tools and easily portable for change of location room to room or out into the backyard. Single and double breaking putts can be created with a kit which Pro Putt sells as an option. The entire package weighs 435 lbs. and sells for $4,723.

PUTTVIEW P7

PUTTR Green The folks at PUTTR know putting practice can be less than exciting, in fact some may consider it boring, so they have developed a smart putting green that connects to an app on your phone to provide crucial statistics with a course-like practice routine. The green unrolls from the storage box that has a computer with analysis software tied to an onboard camera which, using a Bluetooth connection to a PUTTR app, shows statistics, proper putting drills and games plus allows competitions with others. The storage box/technology center has a USB charger in the rear so your phone or tablet can rest on top of the box to be easily visible while the battery is replenished. Variable tee positions allow practice of straight and breaking putts up the slope where the end of the green mat is contained in the box. The PUTTR Twosome right now has a special price of $899 with shipment in April of 2022. A range of other models is also available.

Pro Putt Systems Green Monster If your needs call for a large putting practice green that accommodates several players at the same time the Green Monster covering 194 square feet is the answer. The six-cup surface allows putts up to 18 feet long and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The base is comprised of interlocking panels—50 in total—covered with a quality putting surface that rolls up for storage with a 10-year warranty.

The P7 Home Series from PUTTVIEW combines interactive practice with entertainment using an overhead projector that produces aim lines on to the 6 feet x 10 feet artificial green. Control of the projections is provided by a tablet remote that also analyzes putting performance. Priced at $9,980 the P7 bundle is assembled in the home by the user and offers guided practice routines for multiple players. The software is interactive and includes actual ball path, competitive games plus putting statistics all of which are fully customizable with templates matched to individuals. The green has a variety of putts integral to the design and a slope of up to 3% for uphill straight and breaking putts. Software included with the Home Series allows both free and guided practice with several predefined practice sequences offering a challenge to players of every skill level..

The new bunkers on the Oaks Course achieve exactly that and are some of the best I have ever seen. compensation for giving instruction (with some exceptions), is employed as a golf club or driving range professional, or holds membership in an association of professional golfers. Once lost, amateur status may be reinstated. The new rules also clarify that the restrictions on prizes apply only to “tee-to-hole” competitions played on a golf course or on a simulator, but not to skills competitions such as long-drive, target, or putting competitions. Winter stressed that the elimination of restrictions on expense reimbursements and sponsorships will enable local communities and business to support developing golfers. “This is about being inclusive and bringing a new face to the game. This is about local communities getting behind local golfers and allowing them to play at the next level. It’s about the democratization of golf.” So next year, if you are an elite amateur travelling to competitions, you won’t need to worry about receiving expense reimbursements or sponsorships. But if you accept an $1,100 set of clubs as a prize in a competition at your club, you’ll lose your amateur status. Of course, you are always free to trade the clubs for a less valuable prize..

hen looking for luxury golf accessories look no further than Fresco Golf, makers of premium quality belts, travel bags, shoes and wallets. Owner, Yulian Bardales describes Fresco’s product lines as custom made to order for those wanting the best in modern designs constructed from quality materials to the highest manufacturing standards. “I have been in the bespoke clothing business for many years,” he said. “With many of my clients being golf enthusiasts, I decided to create my own company offering casual luxury accessories aimed towards them.” His track record is evident and in addition to sales made over the Internet at FrescoGolf.com and other sites he told me, “Fresco Golf has representatives in New York and Florida who

make visits to golf clubs and private clientele.” What then makes this company standout in the crowded field of golf-oriented accessories? The answer is simple as shown by their catalog on FrescoGolf.com. Fresco’s aim is to

attract the golf enthusiast wanting the absolute best, someone not satisfied with the typical cookie-cutter-look belts or shoes. Fresco’s signature Alligator Skin belt ($495.00) comes in a matte or glossy finish plus there is a hand painted version for $100 additional. Each is made to order after an accurate to the fraction of an inch measurement of the wearer’s waist plus they offer a choice of belts in python, caiman, ostrich and several other leathers and a cotton stretch model selling for $125. The travel bags are also special and we like the Marco Polo Club bag of vegetable tanned leather made by hand in Florence, Italy. It is a convenient size for weekend travel with a lined interior, double handles and a shoulder strap priced at $625. Fresco’s shoe lineup includes sneakers, spikeless and plastic cleated models which are also made to order in Florence from custom leathers. To ensure each wearer receives a precise fit providing the maxi-

mum comfort Fresco measures each foot individually with their 3D foot scanner. He added in that in addition to Internet sales, “We sell in person at trunk shows, private events and golf tournaments. Our products are on display for purchase at country club pro shops. We measure clients in person at these shows and events, and we train employees at golf clubs on how to properly measure belts and provide them the tools.” A large part of Fresco’s marketing plan is event-specific and corporate gifting that Bardales pointed out, “…clients have the ability to customize products to their liking. Clients may contact us with whatever modifications they want. Fresco Golf offers event and corporate gifting programs as well. We have a reputation for providing handcrafted leather belts as premium gifts for corporations.” Fresco Golf’s ultra-premium selection of products may not be for everyone but for golf enthusiasts looking for unique styling and outstanding craftmanship their shoes, belts and other items are a must-have.
