Golf & Golf Travel Get Away & Play Safely

T

HE GAME OF GOLF continues to grow throughout North American and across the globe. It is estimated that 60 million people play the game at nearly 40,000 golf courses worldwide. While we all begin the process on a local level at courses in the region where we live, it’s not long before we yearn for other pastures to test our skills. One of the greatest aspects of the game is that no two courses are alike, and every course presents a unique set of challenges to every player. For each of us, there soon becomes a bucket list of places and courses we want to visit; the longer we play the game, the longer the list becomes. Golf travel is as big as the game itself and an integral part of the lifestyle that surrounds the sport. The golf industry accounts for almost 85 billion in consumer spending yearly of which nearly 26 billion, nearly 30% of the total, is sectored in golf travel. It’s no secret that golf travelers spend more per trip than almost any other demographic in travel today. The National Golf Foundation reports that core golfers who play on a regular bases take at least one golf vacation, yearly. COVID 19 has severely affected the travel industry and golf travel, however, there is something to take away from all of this that is positive. While golf travel begins to ramp up again with drive golf vacations, some things in air travel have changed and many of these changes will have a positive effect for years to come. Nearly 20 years ago, 911 brought domestic and

international air travel to a halt. Since that time stringent safety and security procedures have made air travel the safest mode of transportation worldwide. Much of the same is happening in the travel industry once again during the COVID crises. Airlines are installing new HEPA filtration systems that filter out germs and bacteria, recirculating fresh clean air every 2-3 minutes. Airlines are also instituting full cleaning and disinfecting between flights on all aircraft, requiring allowable distancing and requiring mask for all passengers and crew. Hotels, restaurants and hospitality businesses have all instituted new regulations and cleaning procedures as well. Today, travel will now be safer than ever not just from this virus, but from colds, flu and many communicable diseases. The end result makes all travel safer and more secure for us all. Every year our August/September issue provides a look at many of the very best destinations for golf travel and a host of great facilities. As we begin to get back out there, visiting new places and some of our old favorites, be assured that your safety and well being are at the forefront of everyone in the industry. The future of Golf Travel is bright and better than ever!

a tale of When you think of links golf, what comes to mind? Slate-gray skies pelting you with sideways rain? Flask-toting caddies who critique your game in unintelligible accents? Seaside holes dominated by quirky humps and hollows—and guarded by towering bushes of ball-hungry gorse? According to the strict definition of the British Golf Museum, there are only 240-odd true links golf courses in the world. The above descriptions would hold true for most of them—especially those located in The British Isles. But the popularity of links golf has given rise to other “links-style” courses all around the globe. I’m a fan of every one of them. BY ALLEN ASKOV 10

Southworth happens to have two courses in its portfolio that illustrate the similarities and differences and between these two kinds of courses well: Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club in Scotland, and The Abaco Club in The Bahamas. Both feature design characteristics that are shared by links courses the world over. But there are important differences, too.

Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club —Scotland Machrihanish Dunes sits on a majestic stretch of environmentally protected shoreline on Scotland’s scenic Mull of Kintyre. The amazing thing about Mach Dunes is that it was created by Scots designer David McLay Kidd in 2009 pretty much the same way its famous neighbor, Machrihanish Golf Club, was built by Old Tom Morris way back in 1876. By hand. Using no heavy equipment. Only the tees and greens were shaped. The rest of the course is just as Kidd found it—just as nature created it. The result is an experience that’s like stepping back in time. In designing Mach Dunes, Kidd identified 27 natural golf holes on the site, and chose the best 18 of them to create what was named “Scotland’s Best Experience” by readers of Scotland’s Bunkered Magazine in 2013.

Sunset over the 9th green. Below: the severely sloping putting surface at the drivable par-4 4th.

Kidd describes a round of golf at Mach Dunes as a “fullfledged mountaineering expedition.” The massive dunes that predominate the site offer myriad challenges, with uphill shots, downhill shots, blind shots and rollercoaster greens that’ll test every element of your short game. When the wind blows (as it almost always does), it’s a challenging day, but from start to finish, one that’s a non-stop thrill ride.

The par-5 finishing hole. Below: Paradise calls for perfect putting surfaces.

The Abaco Club —The Bahamas The same is true of the course at The Abaco Club— one of the world’s great sporting clubs. Technically, The Abaco Club is a private club with an exclusive membership of corporate titans from all around the globe. But the club does allow non-members to visit one time in order to determine if they’d like to join. You should take them up on their offer. Because the course at Abaco is off-the-charts good. The Abaco Club opened in 2004, its seaside course designed by Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie—two Britons who are masters of links golf design. And even though you’ll bathe in warm Bahamas sunshine when you play there, it’s every inch a links experience, with pot bunkers, rumpled fairways and greens that often feature dramatic swales. The wind blows here, too, so playing the ground game as most links courses demand is a must. But aside from the

14

weather, there’s another big difference between The Abaco Club course and the one at Mach Dunes. Like all true links courses, Mach Dunes features fescue grasses, while The Abaco Club’s turf is saltwater-tolerant paspalum. Balls run great on it, but it can grab chip shots. So you have to factor that in when you play there—as the players on the PGA Tour’s Korn-Ferry circuit do when they come to town each year. PGA Tour veteran and 2011 Open Champion Darren Clarke has a home at The Abaco Club, and you’ll find him playing and practicing there whenever he’s not on tour. “The Abaco course is a proper links,” Clarke says. And being from Northern Ireland, he ought to know. Clarke also traveled one week to Machrihanish just to play the Dunes course, and he described that Southworth course as “incredible, brilliant, sensational—the most natural, enjoyable links course maybe that I’ve ever played.” Which course would you find more enjoyable? I guess you’ll just have to visit them both and see.

MachrihanishDunes.com | TheAbacoClub.com

Pot bunkers and sandy waste areas are just two of The Abaco Club’s main challenges. Wind is another.

OR THOSE WHO LOVE THE GAME

OF GOLF, one bucket-list item is surely a pilgrimage to the “Home of American Golf.” For more than a century, the North Carolina Sandhills region — Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen and other quaint, surrounding communities — has delivered not only some of the country’s best golf, but also world-class dining, shopping, entertainment and more. The destination offers almost 40 golf courses within a 15-mile radius. The most storied of these, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s No. 2 Course, is currently prepping for the 2024 U.S. Open Championship — the fourth U.S. Open and 11th USGA championship contested at the famed Resort which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. During the summer of 2019, more history was made when No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 4 — recently redesigned by architect Gil Hanse — served as the site of the 36-hole match-play final of the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship. And, for some of the most

casual fun you will enjoy on a golf course, be sure to visit The Cradle, a 789-yard, nine-hole short course just steps outside the resort. One of Donald Ross’s most praiseworthy creations, Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club is slated to play host to its fourth U.S. Women’s Open Championship in 2022. Architect Kyle Franz renovated Pine Needles and he also impeccably restored another Ross gem Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club. Outside of Pinehurst No. 2, Southern Pines Golf Club is probably the most shining example of the Ross design philosophy. Now, Southern Pines GC is being run — and will eventually be acquired — by the company that owns and operates Pine Needles and Mid Pines. Pinehurst No. 2 will host its fourth U.S. Open in 2024

N 2018, THE NEW COURSE AT TALAMORE was tabbed the area’s “Course of the Year.” This came after a major greens restoration was performed on the Rees Jones design. A year later, Talamore’s partner property, the King’s Course at Mid South — the area’s only Arnold

Palmer Signature course — underwent a similar restoration and greens conversion, along with other club enhancements. A must-play for many, Tobacco Road is a course of such uncommon beauty it thrills and captures the imagination with its creativity. Carving his way through an old sand quarry, the late architect Mike Strantz created one of the most celebrated and talked about courses in the world. Throughout the Sandhills, there are plenty more outstanding, if lesser known, public layouts. There are also several highly regarded private courses that are worth a little extra effort. Ask your travel consultant about the Country Club of North Carolina, Forest Creek Golf Club and the area’s newest, Dormie Club.

Check that item off your bucket list. Plan your trip now to make a pilgrimage to the “Home of American Golf.” www.HomeofGolf.com

HEN YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR NEW CLUBS are you the

golfer that looks at the major brands or are you the player that wants a “swag bag” that is custom inside and out? The best place to start is to follow the top golf equipment influencers on Instagram and their hashtags. This will open up a whole new world of companies you can get one of a kind irons from, painted heads, stamps and more. A common trait is they produce “works of art” with quality and craftsmanship that mass-produced clubs cannot match. Boutique gear will most likely always cost more as you need to be custom fit by a club builder to get the true experience. Remember...first tee and social media bragging rights are paid for not earned when it comes to filling out your #SwagBag.

BUSINESS ACUMEN FRESCO

Fresco Golf – Accessories for the Enthusiast BY ED TRAVIS

T

HE PAST FEW MONTHS have been challenging for every business and the accessories segment of the golf apparel market is no exception. However, one maker of premium quality accessories named Fresco Golf has weathered the downturn successfully and according to owner Yulian Bardales their product line remains popular and is experiencing healthy growth. Golfers have shown continued interest in these top-of-the-line products and the company continues to receive inquiries from golf shops to become a retail outlet for Fresco’s lines. Bardales describes Fresco’s bespoke belts, travel bags and shoes as custom made to order for those wanting the best in modern designs constructed from quality materials to the highest manufacturing standards. “I have been in the bespoke clothing business for many years,” he said. “With many of my clients being golf enthusiasts, I decided to create my own company offering casual luxury accessories aimed towards them.” His track record is evident and in addition to sales made over the Internet at FrescoGolf.com and other sites he told me, “Fresco Golf has representatives in New York and Florida who make visits to golf clubs and private clientele.” What then makes this company standout in the crowded field of golf-oriented accessories? The answer is simple as shown by their catalog on FrescoGolf.com. Fresco’s aim is to attract the golf enthusiast wanting the absolute best, someone not satisfied with the typical cookie-cutter-look belts or shoes. Fresco’s signature Alligator Skin belt

When questioned the effects of the downturn on the high-end accessories business and in particular Fresco’s sales he said, “Our live event sales have decreased since the pandemic. We were invited to the Masters and U.S. Open, both which were postponed.” However, he was pleased to say, “We still sell on Amazon and our two websites, which have seen sales increased since March.” Finally talking about the future, we queried Bardales about his forecast for the golf accessory business, particularly the luxury segment, “Clients and prospects are still golfing. Sales are increasing and will continue to increase. Our product line is always expanding. ASEBALL AND GOLF are eternally intertwined, and not

It is a links-style course that plays left to right.” In Miami, Petrocelli favors a fabled PGA tournament course. “I’ve played in a few MLB tournaments at Trump National Doral in Miami. That is an amazing course if you ever get a chance to play it.

“My teammates Bob Montgomery, Ken Harrelson, and Jim Rice were probably the best golfers on the Red Sox, and they loved playing there. The course is long and beautiful. I had a long putt there once and swung down on the ball, leaving a huge divot. Harrelson said he never saw someone leave a divot on a green!” Certainly, there are a multitude of courses to tickle your golf fancy while taking in some Florida spring training baseball. AROUND THE GAME NEPGA JUNIOR TOUR

Amidst Pandemic, NEPGA Junior Tour Helps Golf Separates Itself From Other Youth Sports New England PGA Junior Tour provides much-needed competitive and social outlets for families across New England

FORE LEFT!

When the coronavirus pandemic blindsided the world this spring, the $19.2 billion youth sports industry felt the blow just like everyone else. Travel tournaments terminated, competitions canceled, and team practices postponed. Even as sports and leagues begin to reopen today, many are unrecognizable from their previous existence. Golf, however, has bounced back into the short grass quicker than its proverbial playing partners; soccer, football and lacrosse, to name a few. Given golf’s expansive outdoor playing field and natural spacing, making the sport pandemic-proof, or at least pandemicapproved, required only a few tweaks. Bring your own water, touchless ball removers in holes, and air high-fives quickly became the new normal as golf not only reopened much earlier than other sports, but stormed back much stronger than many people anticipated. About 1,000 juniors tee it up each year on the New England PGA Junior Tour, with competitions ranging from 9-hole tournaments to two-day, 36-hole championships. Families flocked to the tour when tournament season began in mid-June with safety procedures in place, as the tour offers not only a competitive outlet for juniors, but a much-needed social outlet as well. “Playing in the Junior Tour Tournaments is a fun way to meet new friends,” said NEPGA Junior Tour member Kyzar Joshi. “It’s also a

Jones’ playoff win in 1929 to the wild 72nd-hole histrionics in 2006. Here’s a brief look at what transpired in those championships:

Jones Collects Third Open Title Bob Jones’ legacy was all but cemented when Winged Foot hosted the 1929 U.S. Open, just six years after opening. Jones, the distinguished amateur from Atlanta, Ga., had already produced two U.S. Open victories and

four other runner-up finishes, with one victory and two defeats coming in playoffs. Although Jones carried a three-stroke lead into the final round, two uncharacteristic triple bogeys left Jones needing a par on the 72nd hole to force a 36-hole playoff with Al Espinosa. He rolled in a curling 12-footer to forge a tie, then left little doubt the next day, dusting Espinosa by a whopping 23 strokes in the playoff. The next year, Jones would win all four major championships – the U.S. Open, British Open, U.S. Amateur and British Amateur – and promptly retire at the age of 28.

Casper’s Mighty Sword Carries Him to 1959 Title Noted as one of the game’s best putters, Billy Casper needed only 114 strokes on Winged Foot’s challenging greens en route to a one-stroke victory over Bob Rosburg. Casper, who laid up short of the green in all

Bob Jones needed to sink a curling 12-foot putt on the 72nd hole to get into a playoff for the 1929 U.S. Open, which he won handily the next day.

U.S. OPEN WINGED FOOT

Irwin Survives ‘Massacre’ in 1974 for First of Three Titles The demanding setup on Winged Foot’s West Course, especially the firm greens, confounded the field that assembled for the 74th U.S. Open, leading to a famous quote by Championship Committee chairman Sandy Tatum: “We’re not trying to embarrass the best players in the game. We’re trying to identify them.” Sportswriter Dick Schaap later wrote a book entitled, “Massacre at Winged Foot,” recounting the trials and tribulations of the competitors. Tom Watson, the 54-hole leader and a future U.S. Open champion, carded a final-round 79, and Hale Irwin took advantage by shooting a 3-over 73 to earn the first of his three U.S. Open titles. His 72-hole total was 7-over 287, two strokes better than runner-up Forrest Fezler.

Geoff Ogilvy of Australia saluted the crowd after he finished at 5-over-par 285, good for a one-shot win over three players in the 2006 U.S. Open.

Winged Foot Waves White Flag to Zoeller There seems to be some discrepancy in the details surrounding Fuzzy Zoeller waving a white towel after Greg Norman holed a 40-foot par putt on the 72nd hole of the 1984 championship. Some believed he was surrendering to Norman, but Zoeller has stated that he waved the towel as a light-hearted gesture. Zoeller managed a par on the Fuzzy Zoeller shot the lowest score ever recorded in a U.S. Open playoff, a 5-under 67, to overwhelm Greg Norman by eight strokes and win the 1984 U.S. Open.
