FROM THE EDITOR FA I R P L AY

“There is nothing quite like the anticipation of walking on the first tee and facing a new challenge in a new destination.”

Greener Pastures: Golf Travel is Back – Go Play!

I

T WAS LESS THAN A YEAR AGO when the idea of taking a golf vacation was almost impossible. While golf courses saw a boom in local play during the pandemic, golf resorts all over the U.S. and abroad experienced severe losses and if not for the “Drive Market,” many would not have survived. Management of golf facilities used creative approaches and realigned targeting to sustain during these difficult times. Golf resorts and golf travel destinations had to furlough most of their employees due to little or no occupancy and had little or no bailout relief from state and federal programs. Through all of this, golf was rediscovered as one of the only sporting activities that one could play and be socially distanced from others. Golf grew in popularity by nearly 15%, and more new players entered the game than almost any other time in history. If you play golf, golf travel is in your playbook. The list of places to visit and enjoy the game is literally endless. One of the greatest things in golf is the relationships and friendships we make in and around the game. After discovering the game, we all begin our bucket list of places we just have to visit to play. There is nothing quite like the anticipation of walking on the first tee and facing a new challenge in a new destination. I still remember my first golf trip with three friends to Cape Cod for a long

weekend. We played four rounds of golf at Captains, Old Barnstable and Dennis Pines. We stayed in the heart of downtown Hyannis at the Heritage House, it was quite simply epic. If you love golf, then teeing it up in some of the best travel destinations in the world is a must. One of the newest golf vacations gaining popularity is to stay, play and see a tour event live. Golf travel has evolved into one of the most diverse sectors in the travel industry, there is literally something for everyone. Golf was already the safest sport to play, now with new COVID protocols in place, it may just be the safest vacation travel option out there as well. Some of the greatest golf travel deals in decades are waiting for you; we got some catching up to do on our “Bucket Lists”. Be Your Best!

BOYNE Golf Anchors America’s Summer Golf Capital, Northern Michigan

COVER STORY BOYNE

First time

I traveled to Northern Michigan, I knew I’d be back. Seduced by gorgeous Lake Michigan panoramas along rapturous shorelines, “frozen in a golden era” small towns anywhere, and breathtaking nature, it was wild to process that anywhere this idyllic still exists today. Golf here embraces the majestic coastline to its rippling, verdant and forested interior, and must be experienced by anyone with a serious passion for the game. Our group experienced the elegant simplicity of booking rounds and accommodations through BOYNE Golf, the region’s one-source leader in first-rate resort golf.

uphill hole, with Lake Michigan on the right and fescue “Thislurking left, offer a strategic and aesthetic nod to the Irish courses Bay Harbor is patterned after. ”

The Links #3 and #4 at Bay Harbor Golf Club offer breathtaking views of Bay Harbor Village and Little Traverse Bay.

We put our expectations in BOYNE Golf’s hands because so many people have vouched for its collection of 10 area courses set over three unique resort properties – Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain and Bay Harbor. Meticulous conditioning, memorable scenery, shot values and pure fun were BOYNE’s selling points and its signature properties really delivered. A short, scenic and anticipation-fueled ride from Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) brought us to the iconic Victorian-style Inn at Bay Harbor. Laying eyes on the hotel, its adjacent yacht club and the beaming shoreline of Lake Michigan and Little Traverse Bay, it was immediately clear why many call this “The Pebble Beach of the Midwest.” First on the hit list was the region’s premier golfing experience, Bay Harbor Golf Club and its bucket-list Links/Quarry course. There are moments when you’re playing along the coastline and glance to the water, and you’ll swear you’re on an ocean. As your approach shot on the sweeping dogleg par-4 first on the Links nine takes flight, you catch your first glimpse of Lake Michigan to the left of a well-protected green. At the reachable, 490-yard, par-5 seventh providing big-time thrills and a shot at glory if you bomb a long drive into a narrow landing area. This uphill hole, with Lake Michigan on the right and fescue lurking left, offer a strategic and aesthetic nod to the Irish courses Bay Harbor is patterned after.

The Quarry nine (built on the site of a former working quarry) is an eye-popping thrill ride with each hole daring you to play hero shots. The 478-yard par-4 fifth features an all-carry approach over water to a shallow, firm green. The eighth, which plays into a picturesque Lake Michigan shoreline setting, is easily one of the most picturesque par-3s in America. The Preserve is a parkland routing that plays well up to the lofty standards of the Links and Quarry. Winding extensively through the hardwoods for much of the nine, it opens up to the calming Lake Michigan shoreline. A short drive away, scenic 18-hole Crooked Tree Golf Club delivers stellar panoramic views and an underrated stretch of quality, finely-maintained golf holes. More than one person in our group said Crooked Tree was a course they could play every day. The Inn at Bay Harbor features 116 guest rooms and suites and 35 two- and three-bedroom cottages at the Lakeside Cottages and Cottages at Crooked Tree. All provide views of 12

the renowned Million Dollar Sunsets. Dining and signature cocktails are next-level at Vintage Chophouse and Wine Bar. The hotel’s full-service spa and salon includes a private manicure/pedicure room and a private couples-massage room. Families can also enjoy the outdoor heated swimming pool and whirlpool, cabanas, beach area, lawn chess and croquet, exercise room and biking trails.

Boyne Highlands Resort Resembling a Scottish country estate with its deep wood accents, tartan plaids and massive fireplaces, Boyne Highlands is a cozy escape just 20 minutes north of Bay Harbor. Boyne Highlands is home to BOYNE Golf’s first golf course and a multi-course template many resorts have replicated through the years. A resort renovation is bringing fresh elegance, comfort and a tasteful sense of modern luxury to the property’s rooms and common areas, making The Highlands one

the region’s premier travel experiences. Accommodations abound in the resort’s Main Lodge, Heather Highlands Inn and Townhouses, Alpine Village and, most popular for golf buddies’ trips, the Ross Cottages. With four different courses, Boyne Highlands, makes for an ideal, one-stop buddies trip. The timeless, strategic parkland allure of the Heather (the original Boyne course by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.) and the natural beauty of the Arthur Hills course, which features a ten story drop from tee to green on the 13th, stand tall as must-plays on a visit to Northern Michigan. The Heather, along with the Links/ Quarry, is also on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and, in 2019, was named the National Golf Course Owners Association’s Golf Course of the Year. The Donald Ross Memorial is an extremely well-executed tribute course composed of holes inspired by famous Ross designs that have collectively hosted three Ryder Cups, eight U.S. Amateurs, 11 PGA Championships and 14 U.S. Opens. Seminole, Oakland Hills, Oak Hill, Pinehurst, Inverness, Bob O’Link,

and Aronomink are a few of the legendary courses represented. More than being a thoughtful, well-executed tribute course, The Ross stands apart as a great start-to-finish experience. Recent renovations make The Moor course more enjoyable for those game may not be “tournament ready”. For those who wisely plan golf trips around game improvement, the BOYNE Golf Academy works tirelessly to stay on the cutting edge. An award-winning pro staff uses GEARS and TrackMan in lessons, while expert club fittings and the new TrackMan Range feature on the 32 acre practice range brings working on your game to an unprecedented level. Hit shots and you’ll receive shot data on each swing. Or prep for your round on Boyne Highlands and Bay Harbor Golf Club courses by playing them virtually on TrackMan Range’s gamified version. Just 27 miles away, Boyne Mountain Resort, offers the walkable and family-friendly allure of a European alpine village. COVER STORY BOYNE

Finally, BOYNE Golf is centered amid one of America’s most beautiful vacation spots. Scenic Lake Michigan beach towns Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, and Petoskey are minutes away, and making a side trip to Mackinac Island is easy. This area has some of the best and most memorable before-or after-golf activities anywhere. Marinas, wineries and waterfront dining abound along with the chance to walk Ernest Hemingway’s steps of the summer destination of his youth on the quaint, charming streets of Petoskey. With 10 acclaimed golf courses sprawling

Mountain plays up the ski village theme. The charming and vast resort includes accommodations from standard rooms to suites and condos, situated right at the base of the mountain. The Spa at Boyne Mountain, Michigan’s largest at 18,500 square feet, offer treatment rooms along with access to exercise equipment, steam, sauna and whirlpool facilities. Terrific dining options abound at Boyne Mountain too! Boyne Mountain offers two fun golf courses, the 7,045-yard Alpine and 7,061-yard Monument, which both offer tremendous views of nearby Deer Lake. Both courses zigzag through tree-lined slopes before winding down to tamer, rolling terrain. They each begin with a scenic 10-minute cart ride up the ski hill to their respective first tees. With sweeping drops to narrow fairways carved from the forest, Monument requires more heroic shots. Holes here are dedicated to golfing legends like Sam Snead, Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson. Playing in a similar fashion down the mountain, the neighboring Alpine course features a more parkland layout with classic strategic bunkering and large green complexes that can challenge the best golfers. After golf, don’t miss one of the region’s best lunch and dinner destinations, across the street at the lakefront Beach House. 14

The Alpine #15 at Boyne Mountain Resort The Alpine and Monument courses offer numerous views of Deer Lake as you play down from the top of the mountain.

All of BOYNE Golf’s courses are maintained to meticulous and consistent standards. While there, a staffer showed us that every green on all 10 courses were rolling with much less than one foot of variance on the Stimpmeter. That’s impressive, especially considering the courses were all in good enough shape to host a top-tier tournament at the drop of a hat.

A COUPLE OF TRAVELERS BIG CEDAR & OZARKS

Big Cedar Lodge

The Ozark Mountains of Missouri By Alice & Danny Scott

The Destination

T

HE ENTERTAINMENT CAPITAL OF BRANSON is evolving, in great part due to the vision of Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops. The Ozark Mountains of Missouri are a geographical anomaly where limestone formations are a work of art. Pristine lakes and streams offer outdoor activities year-round.

The Venue Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge, America’s Premier Wilderness Resort is HUGE. The long entrance on Nature Drive passes Summit Overlook and crosses streams with little falls, setting the stage for wilderness fun in all parts of the 4600 acres. Walls at registration are lined with animal trophies and the giant shop is filled with everything you didn’t know you need. Many grand lodges and Camp Long Creek offer a variety of rustic décor and views with modern amenities. There is no shortage of activities at Fun Mountain, the Marina, Beach, Brushy Creek water park and the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum. The Lost Canyon Cave Trail is a golf cart excursion through waterfalls and a cave with a drive-up Bat Bar inside. Holy cocktail Batman! 30

AU GU S T / S E P TE M B E R 2 02 1 | NORTHE AST.G OLF

The Golf Big Cedar Golf comprises five of Branson’s nine public courses, incorporating the astounding Ozark scenery in a Disneyesque golf experience. Jack Nicklaus’s Top of the Rock was the only short course played on the PGA Tour. A stunning first tee delivers an endless view of Table Rock Lake with Chapel of the Ozarks and Jack’s Cabin. The course meanders through an enchanting forest, encircling two ponds with a gliding swan and a heron that habitually perches on top of one rock. Buffalo Ridge Springs is the former 18-hole Branson Creek built by Fazio and yes, a herd of buffalo graze the hillsides. Gary Player’s Mountain Top is a 13-hole walking course that really feels like the top of the world with infinity edge greens. The course ascends and descends with metal skywalks leading golfers over cavernous formations. Ozarks National is Big Cedar’s 2019 Coore & Crenshaw design. The high plain position exposes golfers to the elements. Watch the wind and hit the fairway or your ball disappears in native grasses. Halfway cabins offer soothing treats. Tiger Woods fulfilled his design dream with Payne’s Valley, paying tribute to the late, great, Ozarkite Payne Stewart. It culminates with a bonus 19th par 3 island green

and tall cascading falls over a limestone canvas where a hole in one wins a $1k gift card. From there, Cliff Hanger Drive rises dramatically for a mile up the winding trail, skirting caves and waterfalls to the clubhouse with a wraparound patio for panoramic views. The “19th wonder of the world” claim is spot on. The clubhouse at Top of the Rock includes Arnie’s Barn, relocated from Palmer’s family farm in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Laden with memorabilia and good food, it leads to the Buffalo Bar and patio where a bagpipe and canon ceremony is performed at sunset. A valiant Native American statue on horseback overlooking Table Rock Lake far below has become iconic.

And More Missouri is the “Show Me State” after all, and Branson boasts over 40 live theaters showcasing music, comedy, and magic. Relocated city performers and superior local talent have elevated the Hillbilly Broadway theme. Illusionist Rick Thomas mentored with Siegfried and Roy and performs mind boggling feats in his Dream Mansion. Beautiful family vocals, dance moves and instrumentation entertain in the popular Haygoods Show. NORTHE AS T.GOLF | AUGU S T / S E P T E MB E R 2021

A COUPLE OF TRAVELERS BIG CEDAR & OZARKS

Dozens of amusement parks, including Silver Dollar City, thrill all ages. The Titanic Museum sensationalizes the experience of hanging on to the ship’s rail as the vessel shifts. Historic Branson riverfront shops and restaurants are electrified by the “mini-Bellagio fountain show” set to music.

Our Takeaway Middle America’s most visited destination truly rivals Bandon Dunes and Pinehurst for quality of golf including more public courses. A lifetime of visits might never cover all the activities and entertainment that Branson has to offer. While Branson is worthy on its own, Johnny Morris is the wizard of wilderness business and fun. Big Cedar Lodge is everything it is cracked up to be, so go Big or stay home. 32

Golf’s Version of

Titletown USA

The Home of American Golf is steeped in more than a century of history and tradition. While folks around the Sandhills region of North Carolina will always treasure their past, these days they are more firmly focused on their future. The region’s excitement boils down to two words: championship golf. One of the game’s two governing bodies, the United States Golf Association (USGA), is establishing a second home in Pinehurst. “Golf House Pinehurst” will eventually be the site of the USGA’s equipment research and testing center, and turfgrass agronomy and management offices, as well as a museum and welcome center — all of which will be accessible to the public. The USGA also tabbed the resort’s No. 2 Course at its first U.S Open anchor site, with five championships scheduled through 2047. The total $25 million investment over the next several years includes the construction of two buildings to be located near the clubhouse on the historic Pinehurst Resort property, housing 50 full-time USGA staff members. Other exciting news includes approval of The Lodge at Pinehurst hotel, a new, 64,000-square-foot, 34-room hotel on Pinehurst Resort’s campus. Plans for the hotel 34

AU G U S T / S E P TE M B E R 2 02 1 | NORTHE AST.G OLF

include meeting spaces, locker rooms, a fitness center and bar. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2022 and be complete in time for the next U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2024. All 34 guest rooms and suites will overlook The Cradle short course — offering the only golf course views available at any Pinehurst Resort hotel. The Lodge factors into Pinehurst Resort’s overall vision as both a modern complement to the resort’s three existing hotels and as a venue that will elevate athletes’ experience of the U.S. Open and other USGA championships. The Sandhills’ next championship will be the 77th U.S. Women’s Open Championship at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines. The event is slated for June 2-5, 2022. This will be the seventh USGA championship at Pine Needles, but the first time since 2007 the resort has hosted the U.S. Women’s Open. Pine Needles hosted the U.S. Senior Women’s Open in 2019. Weekly tickets are now available for sale at USWomensOpen.com. Ticket options include a weekly gallery package that includes VIP parking and TuesdaySunday access to the event. There’s also a Bell Pavilion

pass, named for Peggy Kirk Bell, which will include the first two options plus access to an open-air sports bar and one weekday round of golf at Pine Needles. Of course, there are plenty more reasons for excitement around the Sandhills, including a renovation of Southern Pines Golf Club, a vintage Donald Rossdesigned course dating to the early 1900s that is now under management of the company that owns and operates Pine Needles and Mid Pines. Among many improvements, every fairway at Southern Pines GC is being widened to make them more inviting for beginning players, but also allow more advanced players to strategize, while detailing work will make each green complex feel and play the way Ross originally intended. There’s also a new, 16,000-square-foot clubhouse, 15 cottages and a standalone pro shop being constructed among numerous other upgrades at the private Dormie Club, the only original Bill Coore-Ben Crenshaw design in North Carolina. The Home of American Golf remains proud of its past — and equally excited for its future. www.HomeofGolf.com

PRO SHOP TECHNOLOGY

V1 Game and V1 Golf Apps Advanced Game Improvement Need data to inform your improvement process?

The V1 Game mobile app delivers an innovative combination of on-course GPS data plus deep-dive performance analytics – including numerous Stroke Gained categories – that help golfers understand their on-course tendencies and pinpoint the skills they need to practice most in order to improve. The app requires no external hardware or second screens to provide its A.I.-powered game improvement platform. It’s unique, and convenient, in that regard. V1 Game’s A.I. Shot Tracking uses sensors in your smartphone or Apple Watch to detect shots and automatically track your round. An Apple Watch helps V1 Game detect when you swing, marks your location, and emits a soft vibration to confirm your swing detection. 46

AU GU S T / S E P TE M B E R 2 02 1 | NORTHE AST.G OLF

If you don't have an Apple Watch, simply start a round and keep your phone in a front or back pocket, or in the cart or golf bag. V1 Game uses the phone’s GPS and accelerometer data, to determine where and when you potentially hit a shot. You may need to do some slight post-round editing - as with every shot-tracking software on the market - by simply dragging shot locations with your finger on the hole map, in places the A.I. marked shots. Virtual Caddie goes beyond anything else available, using A.I. to provide adjusted ‘Plays Like’ yardages but also building a history of how you perform from various situations based on club use, lie, distance to the hole and weather conditions. It then offers simplified insights during rounds, giving club recommendations and a quick

snapshot of the data – just like a Tour caddie. It even warns what to watch for on approach shots, based on miss tendency data. The feature-loaded Virtual Coach uses A.I. to analyze the data and advise users what to work on specifically. It displays advice, such as “Work on Approach Shots First” and “You are losing the most strokes on putts from 6-10 ft. Practice this range to improve the fastest.” Virtual Coach ‘trends’ plots to quickly see what areas of their game are improving with practice or declining from neglect. Pairing this data with a V1 instructor can further accelerate progress, especially if that teacher is armed with the V1 Coach app for instructors.

SEE YOURSELF IMPROVE On the video analysis and instruction side, V1’s mainstay V1 Golf Plus app was recently updated for a faster, sleeker user interface. Users can send video of their swings to the pro of their choice (V1 is affiliated with more than 13,000 professional teaching pros) and receive custom lessons with voice over instruction, telestration and useful drills for targeted improvement from the pro. V1 is now offering the “Summer Swing & Score Special” until August 31. Act now and you can take 25% off of a V1 Golf Plus premium subscription, to improve your swing, and 25% off any V1 Game premium subscription tier, to improve your score. Use Code: SUMMER25 to redeem. The Proper Ball for Your Game There is an old saying, “The golf ball is your most important piece of equipment because it’s used for every shot.” Unquestionably true so paying attention to selecting the proper ball only makes sense. One way is to start around the green— putting, chipping, pitching—not on the tee. In fact, the distance difference in modern golf balls is best determined by computerized swing analyzer and it may not be that great. On-course factors such as how the ball reacts in the wind do make a difference. Does a ball have too little spin on short iron shots or too much? How does it feel off your putter? Makes sense, doesn’t it? Two or three yards or even ten yards off the tee probably will not affect your score nearly as much as being able to stop a wedge shot next to the pin.

Another selection method is to look back at the past few rounds and figure out which shot, or shots could the ball be of more help? It might be a few yards more length or straighter tee shots or maybe more control of chip shots or…well, you get the idea. Then find the ball to provide the performance you want with that type of shot. A urethane cover ball with three or more layers offering lots of short shot spin may give your scoring the boost it needs. On the other hand, if you need some more distance with the driver or have trouble with a “banana ball” slice a two-piece ionomer cover (Surlyn) distance ball may provide the answer. Regarding price consider your budget first and do not pay for performance you don’t need. Try a sleeve of the ball you think may be the right one, a sleeve of a lower priced

ball and one higher priced over 18 holes, 6 holes each, to see what difference if any you can find. It may be the more expensive ball has the distance, spin and control you are looking for or perhaps the less expensive and mid-price balls perform the same or close to the same. This simple testing can make a lot of difference but remember ball technology is constantly evolving so it doesn’t hurt to redo the selection process every year. The final advice is to forget about what your buddies play and what the professionals on TV are teeing up. Do not mistake the ball performance that will improve your score for the cachet of a paid endorser. Most manufacturers offer a range of balls from pure distance to premium professional models. Here are some of the balls we recommend.

Mizuno RB 566 ($22 dozen) and RB 566V ($30 dozen) The RB 566 is a low compression two-layer ball with an ionomer

cover and an instantly recognizable pattern of 566 dimples using both regular size and micro-dimples. The RB 566V also has an

ionomer cover but is three layers still with a soft feel. The cover has a 566 D-dimple design and the 566V has a higher launch

angle. The dimple pattern of each is designed to keep the ball in the air longer for more carry.

Callaway Golf Chrome Soft Family ($48 dozen)

Each has a four-piece construction and urethane cover with the

Chrome Soft being higher launch with lower spin than the Chrome Soft X which has faster ball speed off the driver and a soft inner

mantle with firmer outer mantle. The Chrome Soft X LS is targeted

for very high swing speed players such as professionals looking for lower driver spin and short iron control. Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm play the Chrome Soft X.

OnCore Golf Vero X-1 ($40 dozen)

The premium category Vero X-1 is meant for players of mid-

handicap or better. It is constructed with four layers including a cast urethane 318-dimple cover plus a larger core and has an

80 to 84 compression rating. The transition layer between cover and mantle is nano-engineered and the mantle has a small amount of metal powder to improve flight stability.

Bridgestone Golf Tour B Family ($45 dozen)

All have three-piece construction, a Gradational Compression

Core with urethane cover. Tour B X and Tour B XS are for players

with driver swings greater than 105 mph. XS is softer for short iron spin and X is firmer. Tour B RX and Tour B RXS for swing speeds

less than 105mph. RXS has softer cover and RX is firmer. Bryson DeChambeau plays the Tour B X and Tiger Woods a signature version of the Tour B X.

Liking Lefty When Phil Mickelson defied the odds, competition, and Father Time to win this year’s PGA Championship, he confirmed his metamorphosis from an inscrutable, inconsistent player who could not win a Major to a respected grand champion. While the golf world as a whole rejoiced in the victory, baseball author and sportscaster Bob Halloran must have felt a special sense of joy. Halloran, an avid golfer as well as a brain aneurysm survivor, has patterned his approach to the game after Mickelson’s. He relates, “I think Phil Mickelson’s got the right perspective.
