HE WORD “BEST” signifies outstanding achievement at the highest level of excellence and accomplishment by its peers. It is a term used in golf to describe a level above and beyond the norm and at a higher standard of quality. For each of us in the today, our individual experiences on courses we play, resorts that we visit, equipment we use, and individuals who have changed the way we play the have made impressions that are life-long. A quote from a golfer during the pandemic, “I am trapped inside my home each day with very little to follow for live sporting events on television. But I can walk the links, gather my thoughts and focus on a few good things through it all with golf. The best in golf, is golf itself, thank God we all had it to keep our sanity and enjoy these beautiful places called golf courses.” I could not agree more! We all have favorite courses, favorite travel destinations, and our own personal bucket list. One of the greatest things about golf is that it is a of discovery.

Playing Here In June of 2020, the Club at New Seabury completed renovations of its Ocean Course and restored their 7,131 yard track to its original glory! nine keeps you surrounded by water as you navigate your way through a consistent breeze, well positioned bunkers and fast greens. The back nine winds its way through nine tree-lined holes. Much like the Dunes, the back nine at the Ocean Course demands strategy and precision to shoot a low score.“We have improved the ambiance, playability and maintainability of the Ocean Course with

Located in a separate location from the courses, you have a driving range with four target greens, a two-acre short game area with a 100-yard sand bunker and 20,000 sqft. putting green. The Center is also home to a full fitting center with two trackmen. All members of the New Seabury golf and fitness staff are TPI Certified so that they can empower members and their guests to get fit, preparing them to play their best golf.

The Turning Stone Resort, just 30 miles east of Syracuse, New York, offers 707 guest rooms, a casino, nightclubs, restaurants, a 33,000-square-foot spa with cardio training and whirlpool, and a 5,000-seat theater. Its best attraction, though, may be its five golf courses. Turning Stone was named Golf Digests “Top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses”, “Golf Digest’s Editors’ Choice Award for Best Travel” in 2017, Golfweek Magazine’s “Top 15 Courses in New York State” and “Most Excellent Golf Resort” in 2010 by Condé Nast Johansens. CEO Ray Halbritter led the Oneida Indian Nation in turning the first American Indian gaming facility on sovereign land into a premier entertainment and golf destination. in various formats with his college roommate, Tiger Woods and other leading pros. A massive bronze gate intertwining branches, eagles and animals sets the stage for a story land experience in Central New York. The long entrance road is bordered

by native vegetation in colors for every season, creating a heightened sense of nature. Meandering between the trees and marshlands, Tom Fazio’s Atunyote, is a great track to measure oneself with the tour players. Stories unfold on Shenandoah as the yardage books for each course give the Oneida translation for the name of the hole and an explanation of the nature attached to it. For example, number 6 is Tamarack, a tree whose tough roots were used by American Indians to bind canoes. Bunkers are plentiful among beautifully arranged flowers and natural landscaping in this Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary where nearly 100 species of birds and lots of wildlife dwell. Kaluhyat is one of the most challenging golf courses in the Northeast. With a 150-slope rating, the A game is a must to conquer this monster. Almost all fairways are tree framed but not
claustrophobically so. The silver of birch, the deep green of pines, and the royal shades of maples merge on Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s golf canvas. Elevation changes are bold, doglegs abound, and greens are stunningly positioned into the environment. If time is short, Pleasant Knolls is a nine-hole par 36 course on 70 acres with fast greens and challenging water features. Sandstone Hollow is another nine-hole course designed by Rick Smith with the executive in mind. This pretty layout of par 3 holes dashes
through the upstate landscape of woodlands and wetlands with fescue and rock outcroppings, it is ranked as one of the top par 3 courses in the nation. Four Casinos include 125,000-square-feet of Vegasstyle gaming space connected to The Hotel in the heart of the resort property. Patrons spin the wheels of fortune with 2,000 slot machines, 66 table games, the best Bingo hall and the largest poker room in New York. Satellite casinos nearby include Yellow Brick Road in Chittenango, home to Wizard of Oz author, L. Frank Baum. Point Place in Bridgeport and Lake House at Sylvan Beach on the Oneida Lake shore add to the variety.

Innovation, a word often overused in the golf industry, simply
means a new idea, method or process to recreate something to make it uniquely better. There’s a long history of shapeshifting products in golf, radical departures that break the mold and completely reconceive the way we experience equipment. Callaway’s original Big Bertha driver, Ping Zing irons, Odyssey’s 2-ball putter, and Super Stroke’s oversized Fatso putter grips all turned heads upon release before becoming ubiquitous. In golf shoes there has been almost no drastic changes in the overall design process in the golf shoe since the introduction of non-metal spikes in the early 90’s to better protect greens. The idea of Sqairz Golf Shoes was conceived on a driving range one day after work when Robert Winskowicz decided to hit a few shots in his square toed dress shoes. He quickly noticed the square toe design allowed for a better alignment and more comfortable and stable contact with the ground. The Sqairz journey was under way, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Robert and his experience in and around golf set the stage for assembling the very best team possible.
A New Beginning for Golf Shoe Design The shoe industry has strong roots in the Boston area which is home to Reebok, New Balance, Converse and Puma, so connecting with a few top industry designers to design a square toed golf shoe was the first step. A podiatrist was further consulted to tweak the design to

achieve optimum range of motion and comfort in design. Additional provisions for a heal stabilizer and moving cleats under pressure point zones for stability were added as well. “Over my career, I haven’t seen a golf shoe with this much technology. This is the best golf shoe I have ever seen,” said Jon Bacon who spent twelve years as a lead design director at FootJoy, co-creating several notable releases including the D.N.A and XPS-1 Sole, before taking on his current role as SQAIRZ director of design and development. “The wide platform creates the best stability and balance in any golf shoe that I have played in or designed. Also, the grip from the unique cleat placement and the innovative secondary rubber traction is by far the best in the industry.” The spikes themselves are pushed further to the edge of the forefoot and the heel to curtail any type of rocking motion. There are only two connections we have in the game of golf, our hands on the club and our feet to the surface of the ground. No matter how perfect your grip is on the club, without stability, freedom of movement, comfort and performance in your golf shoe, you will struggle with balance and consistency in your game. In fact, golf shoes made today have added softer materials that actually make their golf shoes less stable and more difficult to maintain balance during the golf swing. This is not the case with Sqairz, they are designed and built for an optimum ground connection with comfort and performance in mind. The New Distance Golf Shoes™ A recent Golf Laboratories independent test of SQAIRZ vs leading golf footwear brands, amateur golfers ranging from a +2 to an 18 handicap saw the following results: Increased swing speed by 2.2%, increased distance by +8.8 yards, achieved better balance and ground connection. In September, amateur golf moves to Massachusetts. Sankaty Head Golf Club in Siasconset will host the U.S. Mid-Amateur (Sept 25-30). Miacomet Golf Course on Nantucket will host part of the preliminary stroke play competition. Sankaty Head opened in 1923 with a design by Emerson Armstrong, which was modified by Tillinghast in 1928. The Mid-Amateur was inaugurated in 1981 for golfers at least 25 years of age. The winner receives an exemption into the U.S. Open, and since 1988 every winner has been invited to play in the Masters. Looking ahead to 2022, the 122nd U.S. Open will return to The Country Club in Brookline, MA. The fabled course has hosted three previous U.S. Opens, and most famously was the site of Francis Ouimet’s historic victory over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in 1913. The Country Club was one of the five founding members of the USGA. “We are thrilled to bring the 122nd U.S. Open Championship to such a storied golf course and a great club,” said USGA president Thomas O’Toole, Jr. So, gear up for the “best of the USGA” in the Northeast. While many hotels are fighting for survival, the Owl’s Nest Resort in Thornton is expanding to become the largest resort in New England. The multimillion-dollar expansion, which began two years ago, includes a recently completed excavation of a 10-acre lake (the largest man-made recreational lake approved in NH). The lake provides guests with boating, swimming and kayaking and there will also be a lake house that can host events for 500. Other outside activities include eight tennis courts (six clay and two grass) and four paddle courts with heated decks for winter play. And, on the docket for 2021, the resort will open eight pickleball courts, a new executive nine-hole golf course that goes around the lake (set to open in the fall), and a 10-mile paved loop for jogging, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
