IT HAS OFTEN BEEN SAID that nothing in our lifetime has had the same impact upon the game of golf than Tiger Woods created by his amazing career and legacy in the game. To this day, as seen in the 2021 Father / Son PNC Championship in December, Tiger’s return with his son, Charlie, pushed the Nielson numbers over the top as it yielded the largest audience over the last 20 years for the event. It begs the question from us all, what could ever be bigger than Tiger Woods in the game of golf? The answer is one that almost no one would expect but makes complete sense. The Game of Golf is greater than any of us, always has been, always will be. And if you are not convinced, let’s look at just a few things that points to this.

For years golf has been reinvented by adding diverse golf entertainment venues, indoor golf facilities, indoor simulators to golf clubs, sports centers, and homes at the most rapid rate ever seen. There are more golfers playing golf today at oncourse facilities and off-course facilities than at any time in history. Nearly 25 million people played golf in 2021 on courses in the U.S. and another 12 million played in off-course facilities. In simple terms, over 10% of the 330+ million residents in the U.S. played the game. In comparison to other sports played in the U.S., golf is a game for everyone at every age. Other sports like basketball, which had 26 million players, tennis - 18 million, baseball -15 million,

Golf Destinations for 2022 PLACES TO TAKE YOUR GAME

THE WINTER SEASON is now embedded across North America and those temperate fall conditions at the turn of the year have now given way to snow-covered, frozen fairways and greens. Over the last decade in the Northern States and Canada, the meteorological seasons have shifted by nearly 60 days ahead of traditional seasonal benchmarks. With these changes, we get to play more golf in the fall, but our winters start later and are extended through March and often April. Our April Showers are now in May and wind and cool temperatures now prevail throughout spring, shortening our best season for golf each year. In the past, prime season fall and winter golf travel prevailed from

November through March. Today warmweather destinations are in full swing by early November, and many golf travelers are booking golf vacations through spring and even into early summer.

Now is the Time to Plan & Book

Golf travel is experiencing a strong rebound throughout all facilities in North America. Partly because many international destinations are still facing challenges, making it very difficult to plan and execute golf vacations abroad. Because of this many of the top golf travel destinations in the U.S are seeing full occupancy through the fall and with reservations well into 2022. Some international destinations, like Los Cabos in Mexico, have launched an extensive full-scale “Los Cabos with Care” program backed by health professionals and all tourism partners to ensure safe travel for visitors. “As the travel and tourism industry continues to experience a steady recovery, we have continued to redefine what a ‘safe travel experience’ means for our travelers to increase confidence and boost travel loyalty.

Today, Los Cabos has recovered 100 percent of its travel and tourism activity with a 20 percent growth in tourism arrivals from May to August of 2021 when compared to the same period in 2019,” said Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

In March of 2021, Forbes named Los Cabos “The World’s First Health Secure Destination” noting Los Cabos was named the world’s first VERIFIED travel destination after nearly all of its hotels earned an independent health validation from digital health company Sharecare. The title is the first for the health security of hotels worldwide.

After over a year of very limited air travel by golf travelers, air travel is deemed safer than ever. Just about all carriers have installed hospital-grade HEPA passenger cabin filters which capture 99% of all viruses and bacteria, all cabin air is cycled every 2-3 minutes to maintain clean, safe airflow in every row on the plane. Airport protocols have added expanded cleaning procedures in

all areas and screening areas are rotated for disinfecting regularly throughout the day. It is safer to fly than it is to drive by all standards.

St. Patrick’s Day Special: Guinness, Good Times, & Golf

THECLADDAGH PUB & RESTAURANT was established in 1992 along the banks of the Merrimack River in the heart of downtown Lawrence, Massachusetts. This traditional Irish pub offers everything you would expect in such an establishment - food, live entertainment, and of course, an array of beverages to satisfy any thirst.

In this pub, however, there is another offering. Owner Brian Farrell has added Full Swing golf simulators. It has become an indoor golf destination point for golfers around the region, an unlikely and unique indoor golf paradise nestled in an historic immigrant city. As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in March, what better way to get your Irish on than with a little golf mixed into the season?

“The bar business has changed dramatically due to COVID,” says Farrell. “I am an avid golfer myself and I was looking for

a way to tie into the tremendous love of sports and golf here in New England. These simulators offer some great feedback for the average golfer. It is very user friendly.”

Farrell spared no expense in choosing the brand of simulator. Full Swing has adeptly positioned itself in the golf marketplace due largely to their PGA Tour affiliations.

Their PGA TOUR ambassadors have included the likes of Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Jim Furyk, Padraig Harrington, and Brandt Snedecker. The company touts its patented Dual Tracking Technology which provides instant feedback as shots transition from real world to virtual.

There are most likely no Jason Day-level golfers at your local bar, but when winter hits the Northeast, Farrell attracts golfers from around the region looking to keep their golf games sharp.

He relates, “This is a great attraction from November through April. It is not just for the serious golfer either. The simulator features Showdown Golf and competitions in an arcade style that measure distance and accuracy. You can play games where you break windows or hit the cart guy on the range. It is fun for everyone.”

Full Swing works with the upper echelon of golf, but they also see small businesses like the Claddagh as beneficiaries of the company’s ever-dynamic technology.

So, how has a small businessman like Farrell marketed the simulators to his customers in these difficult economic and health times? He responds, “This has been a really unique attraction for our customers. We are set in an inner city, so it can be a tough location for golf, but as people come in, the word grows, and we have attracted a wide range of users.”

Farrell’s simulators are no joke. They analyze the golfer, providing accurate ball speed tracking and flight direction, as well as launch angles and flight data. Club head speed and face angle are also measured. The courses are virtual, but the fun is quite real.

Says Farrell, “I love a lot of the local courses around New England, but everyone wants to play places like Pebble Beach. With the simulators, people can choose from 66 different courses worldwide and compete with each other.

“We have golf leagues using the simulators, and I also donate time to the Lawrence High School golf team to practice. These simulators have been a great way to bring golf not only to my business, but to the community.”.

Sometimes the best way to test golf clubs built for the average golfer is to find an average golfer to test them. It was not hard to find a beginner who had just enough experience with the frustration of choosing a set of golf clubs amidst all the advice and confusion. This mission statement encapsulates the essence of The Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA). With chapters around the country, SMGA is bringing the joy and release of golf to post 9-11 Veterans returning from service.

The organization was founded in 2006 by former PGA Tour player Jim Estes and longtime friend Jamie Winslow. They both realized the healing strength that golf could provide for wounded warriors. SMGA began with the purpose of creating a therapeutic outlet for Post 9-11 veterans undergoing prolonged medical treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland.

Jerry Shanahan, 78, is the head of SMGA’s New England chapter. He talks about the genesis of SMGA in the Northeast. There are several prongs to SMGA. “Warrior Golf Clinics are the core of our programs. They consist of an 8-week series of lessons taught by PGA Instructors. Eligible Post 9-11 combat wounded/ injured Veterans strive to complete 6 of 8 lessons to qualify for a custom fit set of 11 TaylorMade Golf Clubs and SMGA Logo Golf Bag. Veterans learn the basics of the game and just enjoy the ease and relaxation of golf. The most common comment I get from Veterans is ‘This game has saved my life.’

It really started for SMGA New England in 2013 with six Veterans at Weathervane Golf Range in Hingham, MA and has grown to

accommodate 45 new Veterans annually. Shanahan connected with SMGA through a personal struggle of his own. His son Patrick was paralyzed in a shooting incident. Through Patrick’s rehabilitation, Shanahan met Bob Beach PGA and Veterans he was giving lessons to and he eventually got involved with an SMGA Chapter start up in Boston. While not a Veteran, Patrick Shanahan has come back from his own physical and emotional challenges stronger than ever. He is involved with several SMGA programs and has written a book about his life, rehab, and faith entitled “They Called Me Boston.”

This is how we have also affected the families of Veterans.”

SMGA’s “Chip in Fore SMGA Veterans” program is an online auction where you can bid on items with proceeds going to the program. Shanahan relates, “We have close to thirty clubs and their members donating foursomes.

“We are talking about private courses with iconic backgrounds like Myopia, The Country Club, TPC Norton, Old Sandwich, Eastward Ho, Sankaty Head etc. We are in the planning stages of this year’s auction right now. Last year, we raised over $48,000.” For information and updates on the auction and

Shanahan and company host golf clinics and academies for Veterans throughout the year. They have also offered golf trips to The Masters, Ireland, Scotland, Myrtle Beach, Cabot Links and other spectacular locales, but the very roots of the rehabilitation that SMGA provides lay in the most basic aspects of golf.

“When you think about the things that these Veterans have seen and the places they have been, the joy of just being outside in nice weather playing golf cannot be understated,” says Shanahan. “It is about having fun in the sunshine and playing the game. They just love getting out there. That simple experience has been life-changing.”

THE 2022 U.S. OPEN RETURNS TO ITS HISTORIC ROOTS AT THE COUNTRY CLUB IN BROOKLINE

IN THE HISTORIC 1913 U.S. OPEN at The Country Club in Brookline, 20-year-old amateur Francis Ouimet clawed his way into an 18-hole playoff against the best players in Britain, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Ouimet, a club caddie, stood on the tee of the short par-3 10th hole tied with his seasoned competitors, and proceeded to record a par to their bogeys to take the lead which he never relinquished. His improbable victory launched a distinguished career as an amateur golfer which inspired the creation of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.

When the U.S. Open returns for the fourth time to The Country Club this June, that famed par-3 hole will once again be part of the layout – for the first time since 1913. But this year it will play as the 11th hole, a downhill 131-yard wedge shot to a green defended by four bunkers and a fronting brook. Jeff Hall, USGA managing director of Rules and Open Championships, remarked: “Let’s

face it, it’s a wedge for these guys, and yet there will be some players walking to the 12th tee having just marked a 4 on their card and wondering what happened.”

New England golf fans will have the chance to witness the U.S. Open in their backyard for the first time since Curtis Strange defeated Nick Faldo at The Country Club in 1988. The venerable club, founded in 1882, is one of the five founding clubs of the United States Golf Association. It has hosted 16 USGA championships, most recently the 2013 U.S. Amateur, and was the site of the 1999 Ryder Cup – the “Battle of Brookline” where the U.S. team rallied from a 10-6 deficit on Sunday to win the Cup.

The Country Club course was carved out of a racetrack incrementally over a number of years. Club members laid out the first six holes in 1893. Over the following six years, Willie Campbell, the first golf professional, expanded the course to 18 holes. Reese Jones was brought in to update the course for the 1988 U.S. Open, and in 2019 Gil Hanse began a restoration to create a cohesive design dating back to its original form.

To accommodate the inclusion of the par-3 11th hole, the par-4 fourth hole will be taken out of play. In addition, Hanse

Golf’s Growth Equation = Women

Golf is undergoing an unprecedented growth and women are a big part of the increase in the number of players. Consider some statistics provided by the National Golf Foundation (NGF). Last year the total number of people participating in some form of golf was 37.5 million almost equally divided between on-course only (12.6 million), off-course entertainment venues only (12.4 million), and both on and off-course (12.5 million). NGF says the total of all three categories is 17% higher than five years ago.

The measure of participation industry insiders pay close attention to though is the number of rounds played, and in 2021 rounds are up 5% versus 2020 on top of the 13% growth from 2019 to 2020.

In the critical category of those participants teeing it up on a golf course, the NGF reported 6.2 million are women which is a 2.5% increase in just the past year and a

gain of 6.3% over five years.

These numbers though don’t tell the whole story since 3.2 million new golfers were continuing a trend since 2016 that totals 18 million beginners and women were a major portion of these first-timers.

Women’s interest in the game is reflected across the entire industry. Purchases by women are larger than any individual golf product category according to Golf Datatech at more than $1.53 billion in equipment and apparel in 2021. Retailers are selling more women’s clubs, packaged sets, and apparel, and are working hard to capitalize on this trend. The largest golf-specific chain, PGA Tour Superstore (PGATSS), is a strong supporter of programs to bring more women into golf such as Women’s Golf Day, and has instituted an instore lesson series called “Get Golf Ready.”

Dick Sullivan, the CEO and President of PGATSS told me, “A major part of the increase [in new players] was due to women finding the game fun and recent

data shows about 40% of new participants on and off course are women.” According to the company in 2021, women’s apparel sales increased by 59% and women’s footwear was up 67% from 2020 reflecting women’s desire for a more relaxed lifestyle and clothing that can be worn on and off the course.

Other retailers are also targeting the increased interest with women-specific displays, inventory, and in-store programs. We asked women in the know, industry insiders, for their observations and comments. The list includes: Kay McMahon, a renowned instructor and owner of EduKaytion Golf schools, an award-winning teacher who is a member of the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame plus the president of the trade group Women in the Golf Industry; Elisa Gaudet, industry executive and founder in 2016 of Women’s Golf Day; Janeen Driscoll, Director of Brand Communications for the United States Golf

Association (USGA); Catherine Carmignani the Director of Communications & Marketing at Mass Golf, the state golf association for Massachusetts.

When asked about the reason women are taking up golf in increasing numbers McMahon told me, “The obvious one would be social. Women want to be out and interact with each other. Golf is also a game that can put them on equal footing with men, meaning that you can play golf with people of various skill levels because it is

differently now, being able to combine so many of these important elements in one package is extremely appealing.” Carnignani went on to say, “Golf is a great family activity, and any parent out there that plays would be thrilled to have their children get into the game. I think you’ll see that as more parents and guardians pick up the sport, the juniors are being brought along on that journey as well because of the programming that is available to them. The more we can do as an industry to facilitate entry into the sport for the decision-makers in a household, the more juniors we will see.”

Certainly interesting points and Gaudet expanded them. “In the past two years, I believe many women have taken up golf due to the Covid situation and that it is one of the only things people could do and be outside in a safe environment. As a result, I also think it has been a relaxed environment with not taking the flag out and people just getting out and wanting to enjoy the beauty of golf as opposed to league play and getting their handicap down.”

We went a little deeper and asked Gaudet about juniors taking up golf because of more women playing. “Absolutely, if the female plays she is more inclined to get her children involved or at least exposed

Driscoll told me the number of women with a USGA handicap in 2021 topped a half-million to 503,466 having an average handicap of 27.7 and stressed the Association actively supported bringing girls into the game with the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program with over $3M in grants to Girls Golf chapters since 2015. She went on to say that in 2000, only 15% of junior golfers were female but last year females counted for onethird of junior golfers—the most in history according to the NGF. LPGA-USGA Girls Golf which has shown an encouraging increase from 4,500 girls in 2010 to 90,000 girls in 2021, more than a 1,800% increase. last year. Founder Gaudet emphasized the future and that women bring to the game missing aspects. “I think it is really important we retain the new ones, 450,000 according to NGF, that came into the game in the past one to two years. From our perspective, I see increases year over year.”

She continued, “We have a campaign #BringAFriend and that encourages women to ask someone to participate with them and the word spreads. Each year we see the events grow in size as well. We have firmly established ourselves and the consistency of the first Tuesday in June being Women’s Golf Day, they can rely on that and participate.” Addressing support for Women’s Golf Day from the industry, Gaudet said, “We are constantly looking to work with governing bodies and golf industry leaders. All our partners have found depth and growth and synergy like the active promotion by PGA TOUR Superstore to have a Women’s Golf Day table in the front of every store for a few weeks before the first Tuesday in June and we work with them to engage our partners like Callaway, Titleist, FootJoy, and Glove It. We would like to see more engagement and support from the governing bodies. What we are doing is creating a feeder market for PGA teaching pros to take these women and put them in the appropriate program for their interest level for continuing with golf ass well. Our global audience can play a role in engaging with the various professional golf tours through viewership, attendance at events, and social media. We have had a very good relationship with the R&A for the past 3 years and we work together to share messaging and encourage engagement on many levels.”

Creating a welcoming transition for women to go from nonplayer to player is key and groups working to do that will continue to attract players but the second often forgotten factor is helping “newbies” see success playing this maddening game. Further strengthening of the programs to bring girls into the game will ensure a bright future for women’s golf.

THE GAME OF GOLF BESTOWS, for those of us inclined to become immersed in the ride, a journey of singularly wonderful and engrossing proportions. We who make golf our own personal passion can find ourselves, transcendent, in a state of suspended disbelief we want to never end. There’s a sanctity, a purity to the game that can perhaps best be compared to those intensely lucid Technicolor dreams we experience only a precious, few times in life.

I came from the video game business–the original video game business–before the suits took over and we stopped having fun. That’s when I moved to indoor golf, simulators in particular. As a game developer I quickly learned that the most

key driver of great simulation is consistent “suspension of disbelief”. Indoor golf simulators, to be really good, must suspend disbelief.

The indoor golf industry as a whole has continued to progress, in half lives, toward perfecting the art of simulating outdoor golf. But folks, make no mistake, indoor golf is golf. Did you know that 1/3rd of U.S. golfers, only play off-course? There are nearly as many off-course golfers as on-course golfers, and every one of them are golfers.

Northeast Golf Magazine has flatteringly asked me to produce a regular column to address the most important elements of choosing, aggregating, or integrating an indoor golf simulator. My business has a
