A summer of crowd pleasing musicals in Chatham

The Mac-Haydn Theater’s 56th summer season includes six musicals you’ll be able to hum along with and two new shows with more limited runs.

If you’ve never been, the theater was started in 1969 by Linda MacNish and Lynne Haydn. The pair decided to try putting on musicals in a Chatham, NY cow barn. What was to be a one-summer wonder caused enough buzz that the pair continued producing, outgrowing barn and moving to their current location.

Fish is tricky to get right. Overdo it and you get a dried out piece of cardboard. Underdo it and it’s anisakiasis time. Don’t worry. Our Berkshires restaurateurs know what they’re doing. That’s why it was so hard to pull only a few places to get great seafood. We excluded sushi places. We excluded fish tacos. We looked for places with multiple seafood options and expert or unusual approaches to sea creatures. Here they are. And no playing “See — Food?” with your brother.

aegean breeze

327 Stockbridge Road, Great Barrington

Being a nation bounded by water, Greek cuisine knows a thing or two about fish. This restaurant does fish simply, mostly char-grilled, letting the delicate fish flavor speak for itself. Our recommendations for fish-forward choices include, in the appetizer area, the grilled octopus with capers, EVOO and a light vinaigrette. Mussels Santorini is another great choice. For your main you can opt for Fresh Lavraki — a whole grilled bronzino, prepared Greek style. Other choices are Calamari Santorini, Filet of Sole “Plaki”, Mykonos Seafood over pasta or anything from the list of grilled fish, our suggestion being the whole jumbo sardines.

alpamayo

60 Main St., Lee

This unassuming storefront in Lee serves very fresh fish in very surprising ways. For appetizers, go with the Ceviche Misto. The Shrimp in Anticucho sauce is another winner. Parihuela is a seafood soup with fish, shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams. Yum. There are no less than 8 house specialties so pick your species. We recommend the halibut, especially if there is a special preparation offered on the evening you go. There is more — Cau Cau, Pescado a lo Macho and on and on.

salmon run fish house

78 Main St., Lee

The name says it all. This fixture in Lee, just down the street from Alpamayo, is a must-visit fish joint in the Berkshires. The offerings are numerous. We suggest starting with Pub Style Steamed Clams, progressing to Pan Roasted Salmon in a honey maple glaze, or perhaps Seafood Stew, which is a bowl of everything with potatoes and broth.

cafe triskele

150 Main St., Lee

Formerly Chez Nous, also in Lee (what is it about Lee and fish?), it’s not so much the length of the list as the excellent preparation that rates the mention. Coquilles St. Jacques is an excellent starter as is the Smoked Salmon Tartine. Triskele offers four different preparations of Moule Frites — in tarragon cream sauce; wine, yellow curry and cream; shallot white wine sauce or white wine, blue cheese and cream. Hard to choose, I know. As an entree, the Loup de Mer is the one fish entrée: a sea bass filet with goodies on the side.

boston sea foods

109 First St., Pittsfield

Don’t be put off by the trucks in the parking lot as you make your way inside the former Rainbow Room, situated almost on the railroad tracks in Pittsfield. You’ll be transported to a place working hard to deliver good food consistently. Their appetizers in the undersea category include mussels, the ubiquitous shrimp cocktail and fried calamari straight or Arrabiata. I’m a big Arrabiata fan. There are crab cakes and even a seafood tower with raw items that comes in big or bigger. You can get zuppa di pesce, that mix of sea creatures over pasta in red sauce, shrimp Alfredo, scampi, and shrimp several other ways. The salmon is available Cajun or oreganata. There is much more. This is a fine place for fish with an Italian accent.

160 American Legion Drive, North Adams

If your idea of seafood heaven is anything fried, this is your spot. You can get steamers and stuffed clams, but the heart of this menu is out of the fryer — fish and chips, fried shrimp or clams, scallops, fish fillets, jumbo fish fries and fisherman’s platters with everything are all on the menu. Or you can opt for the fried seafood dinner which gives you the fish of your choice fried up and next to potatoes, coleslaw or salad. You can get a casseroles or lobster in butter, baked stuffed items and things over pasta.

Tips for successful dog training

All dogs can benefit from learning basic commands, and the RSPCA says successful training is a rewarding part of dog ownership. There are many things one might want to teach a pet and a variety of strategies to pursue that training. These tips can help anyone successfully train their dog, leading to a an even stronger relationship between owner and pet.

Elect a dog trainer. If a dog resides with many people in the household, select one person who will be the primary trainer to establish the ground rules of the training sessions. If multiple people bring various styles to the dog training, that could result in inconsistencies that confuse the animal. Once the training sessions have proven successful, the trainer can share what he or she is doing with others in the home and they can mimic the same commands and gestures.

Use positive reinforcement. According to Small Door Veterinary, almost all vets agree that positive reinforcement training is the most effective method of training a companion animal. This type of training rewards good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior. The American Kennel Club says training is more successful when owners identify what the dog finds rewarding. Some dogs are very food-motivated, while others might be willing to work for play sessions or just verbal praise.

Consistency is best. Always use the same word and intonation when asking a dog to do something.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? Lost & Found and Free pet ads are no charge for 20 words and can be placed for 2 weeks. Place your ad online at shoppersguideinc.com

Everyone in the home also needs to be on the same page with rules, which means that if one person says "no" to the dog on the furniture and another says "yes," the dog will end up confused.

Patience is key. Although dogs can read human body language and gestures, they do not actually comprehend all language, says the AKC. It can be some time before a dog understands all training requests.

Start small and build up. Teach a dog commands incrementally and reward each step of the learning process. For example, reward the "stay" command even if the puppy only stays for a second or two. Later on, build up to longer durations of staying still. Praise small things. It is easy to get caught up in the end goal of training, but experts note little victories are equally important. Praising the pet when he or she does something right, even if it is a small thing, will keep the motivation going.

Finish positively. End all training sessions with something the dog knows so that the session will end on a high note.

If training does not come easily after many weeks of going it alone, pet owners may want to seek the help of a professional dog trainer. Professionals also can be helpful for those pet owners who want to break dogs out of unsavory behaviors, such as leash aggression or excessive barking. TF251566
