MAIN(E) ATTRACTION behind the camera of maura mcevoy Click. Scroll. Gasp. We all do it when we look at the beautiful things we love. Whether it is the gorgeous frothy whites of interior design magazines and blogs or the sumptuous and saturated colors you crave, there is one thing that brings you the design ideas you adore – the keen and creative eye of a photographer. Some of the best designers launched their career thanks to the epic photography of the world’s immensely talented image catchers. One of our absolute favorite new friends is the effortlessly charismatic powerhouse, Maura McEvoy.
With photo credits usually happening at the teensiest of fonts at the bottom corner of an image, you may not know if you have seen Maura’s incredible images. Let’s clear that up now… you have definitely seen her work. We can say that confidently because it is everywhere in the most epic ways you can possibly imagine. Maura is the veritable “it” girl in the design industry and everyone knows it. “Pottery Barn, Jonathan Adler, Nine West, Rockefeller Center, Banana Republic, Cole Haan, Michael Kors, Swarovski, Free People, Coach, and countless other brands and designers have gorgeous images because of Maura McEvoy behind the lens. And they’re bloody lucky!”
Even the most rabid design and décor followers often overlook the image credits while they yearn after the images that make their mouths water. Fortunately for us, Maura’s work transcended the obligatory image credit and grabbed our attention in an unexpected way. Maura collaborated on a book that has hit all New England lovers by storm. The Maine House is a strikingly beautiful coffee table book that was a passion project for McEvoy. Maura speaks so eloquently and nostalgically about the quintessential coastal Maine cottage and how painful it is to see the coast dismantled by multimillion dollar “anywhere USA houses” as Maura describes them. “The ease and beauty of Maine is what makes it so special. The quiet, unassuming charm. Embracing and honoring history and allowing age to remain… it is being taken from us. I knew I had to find a way to document the Maine I know. I had to do it before it was gone.”
Maura has a quiet fire inside her when she talks about homes and preserving history. It drives her to chronicle uniqueness of place - her skillful eye finding unexpected or overlooked beauty, whimsy, even decay. She sheds light and tells poignant stories of both constructed and natural environments. This page: Images courtesy of McEvoy. Opposite page, Maura McEvoy in front of her Maine cottage.
And they’re bloody lucky!” New England Pet & Home Magazine
Maura began her photography as an editorial assistant at Metropolitan Home magazine. That was her first job out of college. She recounts the day the editor in chief, Dorothy Kalins, said to her, "Hey, will you buy a tripod...I may publish some of these pictures someday." So she did. Maura explains, “So began a lifelong career of doing exactly what Dorothy told me to do! She's just that brilliant.”
It took a decade and an interim career as a stylist, working with amazingly talented photographers. They taught me so much about light and composition while working together on major advertising campaigns for Ikea, Karastan, Hunter Douglas, KitchenAid, Thomasville, and GE to name a few. Then the day came when Maura saw her own name beside an image in a national magazine. And the credits and career accolades haven’t stopped. Fast forward a few frames and Maura is one of the most well-known and sought-after photographers around. And what does an incredibly successful and talented human being do when they are also kind and compassionate? They give back. Maura as photographer joined forces with her friends and creative cohorts to create The Maine House book. Art Director, Basha Burwell and writer, Kathleen Hackett, complete the trio of roaring and passionate women who brought The Maine House book to life. The project had already started when, as for the rest of the world, life was turned upside down by global health concerns. The trio decided to throw themselves into the project rather than shy away because of challenges we all faced. It was a more than four year project with 3,000+ miles travelled. This page: Above is McEvoy and Lenu who was adopted during the pandemic. And the talented, take-charge trio Hackett, Burwell, and McEvoy. Opposite Page: McEvoy’s Maine cottage.
At least a portion of Maura’s inspiration for The Maine House book was her own connection to coastal Maine. She moved to her coastal Maine home at the start of the pandemic. Her daughter was about to start her first NYC job in public relations and, instead of becoming an empty nester, the two became Maine cottage roommates. “I had loved the house for such a long time but had not considered making it my primary home. You realize a lot about yourself when you have to focus on what is essential. I only really needed one pair of shoes. We used a pellet stove to heat the entire house. I didn’t need lots of space. We had each other and, despite the worries of health, this time together was a gift.”
Maura and her daughter enjoyed opportunities for deep conversations, lots of laughter and a gift they acquired together – their new best friend, Lenu. The two wanted to have a cuddle bug with them in this new chapter. It was all so unknown, and they wanted to have a companion with them. Lenu was the perfect match bringing energy, joy, a quirky disposition, enjoyment of walks, as well as the anticipated cuddles. A charming little family in a charming little cottage. The house and the experience brought added inspiration for The Maine House book project. Maura was now living and breathing it.
With the worry and concern we all experienced, Maura had a trio of warrior women working on the book and a little personal trio cocooned off together on the Maine coast. Top left image down: a simple, chic dining area with pellet stove, a magical bath to start the day, a view worthy of looking closer and, above, just steps to the sand.
With Maura’s incredible inspiration backing the creation of the book, The Maine House has already seen critical acclaim with reviews from some of the most significant home-focused publications in the county. Our friends at Décor Maine shared about the book, “The Maine House crafts a plea to preserve a living history belonging to individual, family, and state; a visual call to recognize these homey structures and others like them as ‘extraordinary gifts.’. . . Maura, Basha, and Kathleen have gone into these old homes and salvaged something we’d do well to hold on to: the understanding that when the last cottage is crumbled and family farmhouse is flattened, so goes the unrenewable character and charm that is uniquely Maine.”
From The New York Post, “The Maine House [is] a visual journey through delightfully ramshackle saltwater farms and fish shacks, to stately stone houses and cozy coastal cottages.” New England Pet & Home favorite, Cottages & Bungalows, describes, “The Maine House is a detailed anthology of the charm, centuries-old nostalgia and various characteristics of these classic homes, and a historical documentation of many Maine cottages.” The New England Pet & Home Team fell in love with the beautiful images and the obvious love affair that was poured into each page and each painstakingly curated image. Like Maura, we hope you will go to your local bookshop to find The Maine House.

Maura’s book, her career, her Maine cottage, and her family are reflective of a single truth: You can find the most abundant beauty when you remember to focus on the simple things.
“The simple things are where your heart lingers.”
Our friends at Spring Hill Farm are the featured New England shop and we are, admittedly, in love with their gorgeous work. The proprietors of Spring Hill adopted the gorgeous cover photo cat, Hazel, from the Providence Animal Rescue League in 2014. Hazel had been there for nine months. She came in pregnant and they adopted out her entire litter. Hazel remained. She sat facing the back of her cage and never caught the attention of anyone. She wasn't the cat reaching out her paw or rubbing against the bars. “Funny enough, that is what attracted me to her,”
Spring Hill Farm 1820 explains Hazel’s mom. “She has been part of our family ever since and we all fight for space on the couch every evening.” The family and farm also boasts seven chickens. They free range when the family is outside and able to protect them from predators. The whole family loves the gardens. The chickens’ home is in one of the property’s post & beam outbuildings. It is split to be a potting shed and chicken coop. “We call our business Spring Hill Farm 1820. Our little farm was originally a dairy farm, called Spring Hill Farm and, you guessed it, built in 1820. I have loved collecting and styling country pieces since I was little. I used to go with my mom to auctions, mainly for french fries & soda, but learned to love every minute of it.” Spring Hill Farm 1820 curates a variety of vintage and antique pieces. You can always find English pine, garden pieces, and nautical items amongst their collections. The gorgeous property and shop is located in Rhode Island and is available by appointment for larger items. You can also find them at select New England Vintage Markets. Make a point to visit the cover girl, Hazel, and her hen sisters! You can also visit the family on Instagram to see their antiquing adventures and styling of their farmhouse @springhillfarm1820. Pet lovers and animal advocates, Spring Hill Farm 1820 is part of the New England Local Love Campaign. We promote businesses that support animal welfare. www.springhillfarm1820.com

Intro by Charles Stanton, Creative Director of New England Pet & Home and Executive Director of NH Humane Society. I met many dear friends when I was singing with an ensemble called Dozan Wa Awtar and the Jordanian National Orchestra conducted by another wonderful friend and colleague. In a recent conversation, I told one friend that I am in New England, and she shared that her relatives live in Sharon, Massachusetts. I was struck by the unexpected global connection. She encouraged me to visit Sharon and connect with her family. They are involved at the Islamic Cultural Center of New England in Sharon which is not only a Mosque but also serves as a cultural anchor for the community. While I had unique opportunities to learn about other cultures when I was singing professionally, I knew little about animal welfare in other cultures. I sought the insight of one of my favorite activists and writers and asked him to explore the topic from his own unique perspective. I hope you enjoy it. KINDNESS
TRANSCENDS exploring the universality of compassion Qasim Rashid, Guest Contributor Qasim Rashid is a human rights lawyer and author. He and his wife Ayesha reside in Virginia with their three children. You can find Qasim on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook @QasimRashid or reach him via email at qasim.rashid@gmail.com.
“There was once a man travelling along a road and felt extremely thirsty,” the Prophet Muhammad related a story to his companions, “so he climbed down a well and drank water.” His companions listened intently. “When he came up, he saw a dog panting with thirst and licking the moist earth. ‘This animal’, the man said to himself, ‘is suffering from thirst just as much as I was.’ The man returned down the well again, filled his shoe with water, and taking it in his teeth, climbed out of the well. He then gave the water to the dog. God was so pleased with his act that He granted him pardon for all his sins.” The companions of Prophet Muhammad then asked, “O God’s Prophet! Is there a reward for us in serving animals?” He replied, “Yes, there is a reward for serving all living creatures.” Growing up we had many different pets, each more beloved than the last. I’ll never forget my two parakeets aptly named Green and Blue, our guinea pigs named Gus and Gary, and my precious cat named Eek. Even after all these years, the memory of them fills my heart with warmth and comfort, even as I miss them. Growing up in a Muslim household, our parents reminded us that according to Islamic teachings, keeping pets wasn’t a right, but a privilege and a trust. It was a privilege to have the companionship of pets who love unconditionally, and it was a trust to ensure we took care of their needs. And not only their needs of food and water, but of time and affection as well. In the West we’ve all heard the common refrain that dogs are “man’s best friend.” The religion of Islam teaches Muslims and advises all humanity to exhibit immense, mercy, compassion, and empathy for all animals as acts of morality and virtue. This is no accident. The Holy Qur’an, which is the holy scripture for Muslims, acclaims the Prophet Muhammad as “the Mercy for all creation.” The same Creator that created humanity also created every creature of the animal kingdom.
As Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the fourth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community once implored, “If you love the artist, you must love his art. Similarly, if you love the Creator, you must love His creation.” Many of the world’s great religions and philosophies including Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism implore teachings on some level or another about respecting God’s creatures. Building upon these great teachings, Islam provides a comprehensive guidance on the treatment of animals in every sphere of life - including as pets, for agriculture and travel, and certainly for diet and consumption. The constant theme throughout the Islamic teaching stems from mercy. Leading by example, Prophet Muhammad forbade animal branding, torture, and mutilation. He taught Muslims to respect the sentiments and feelings of animals, forbade forcing animals to bear too much weight while working, and condemned cruelty even to ants. Indeed, once when he learned a few people had set fire to an anthill, the Prophet vehemently condemned the act as cruel and forbade using fire to kill any living thing. Let’s start with pets. Prophet Muhammad particularly loved cats. One of his closest and most famous companions was a man named Abu Hurairah Abd al-Rahman ibn Sakhr AdDausi. But he was better known as Abu Hurairah, which literally means “Father of the cats.” He was nicknamed so because he endearingly had a cat or kitten with him wherever he went. As a juxtaposition to the earlier story about God forgiving a man’s sins because he fed a stray dog, Prophet Muhammad also admonished that, “A woman
was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger. God said to the woman, 'You neither fed it nor gave it water when you locked it up, nor did you set it free to eat the vermin of the earth.'” This lesson from Prophet Muhammad details the gravity of sin and immorality that is animal abuse and animal torture—so much so that engaging in this grotesque act can land someone in Divine punishment. Nowadays, my kids have a pet parakeet named Pato. Upon bringing Pato home my wife, Ayesha, and I sat down each of our kids and walked through their responsibilities, and the accountability they face for mistreating Pato. They’ve fortunately taken this responsibility seriously, always making sure Pato has clean water to drink, plenty of healthy food to eat, and a clean cage full of toys and gadgets. My eldest has even trained Pato well enough to sit on his shoulder as he goes about his day. And I began by sharing with my kids a story about Zaid and Umayr. Today we commonly refer to ourselves as a “cat dad” or “dog mom,” viewing our pets as an extension of our families. Endearingly, in the 7th century Arabia, the Prophet Muhammad recognized this love people exhibit for their pets. It is reported that once a small child named Zaid, who was only about 5 years old, had a pet bird. Zaid named his pet bird Umayr. Accordingly, Prophet Muhammad affectionately called Zaid by the name of “Abu Umayr,” which means “The father of Umayr.” A short while later when Umayr died, the Prophet paid a special visit to Zaid, held him in his lap, and consoled him for the loss of his beloved pet bird. In doing so Prophet Muhammad recognized the special relationship people have with their pets, and extended empathy to those who’ve

suffered the loss of a beloved pet. Such is a model truly worth following in all walks of life for people of all faiths and no faith. Indeed, when my childhood pets died, it was comforting for me to know of this precious example and find solace. Beyond keeping animals as pets, and throughout most of human history, animals were used for assistance in agriculture, trade and commerce, and transportation. While modern technology has drastically transformed the role animals play in these arenas, the principles set forth on animal welfare are evergreen. For example, while Islam teaches that humanity is God’s greatest creation, the Qur’an Chapter 6 verse 39 also lays out the principle that, “There is not an animal that crawls in the earth, nor a bird that flies on its two wings, but they are communities like you.” This message reminds humanity that animals enjoy life in communities, are social creatures, and deserve respect and empathy. Accordingly, in using animals for transportation of carrying a load, Prophet Muhammad commanded mercy. Whenever he saw that a person was abusing or overburdening an animal he would admonish, “Fear God in your treatment of animals.” He would likewise remind Muslims, “Verily, there is heavenly reward for every act of kindness done to a living animal.” Similarly, once Prophet Muhammad passed by a camel whose stomach almost touched it’s back (from lack of food). Seeing the camel’s emaciated condition he expressed his displeasure at its treatment, saying: “Fear God in treating these unspeaking animals! Ride them while they are in good health and eat them while they are in good health.” On numerous occasions he reminded and restricted his companions from separating a mother bird from her children. So attuned was the Prophet Muhammad to respect for animals that in his famous rules of war which categorically forbade offensive attacks, the killing of women, children, religious figures, and the elderly, he also forbade the wastage of crops, destroying of trees, or killing of animals. Similar themes of mercy and empathy extend to Islamic dietary habits. To begin with, Islam forbids beating or gorging an animal to death. Likewise, the animal must not be sick, aged, diseased, or dying, but instead healthy and strong. Even the

method of slaughter is done with three factors in mind—minimizing pain and suffering, protecting the animals emotions and feelings, and maintaining cleanliness and good hygiene. Thus, for animal slaughter Prophet Muhammad taught, “Every one of you should sharpen his knife, and let the slaughtered animal die comfortably.’” Islam obliges Muslims to slaughter humanly, and the method verbatim adheres to the 1958 Humane Slaughter Act which allows, “…slaughtering in accordance with the ritual requirements of the Jewish faith or any other religious faith that prescribes a method of slaughter whereby the animal suffers loss of consciousness by the simultaneous and instantaneous severance of the carotid arteries with a sharp instrument and handling.” This method of slaughter results in near instant death in about 2-8 seconds. In one notable incident a man intended to slaughter his sheep. After laying the sheep down, he continued preparation for the slaughter by sharpening his knife in plain view of the sheep. Upon seeing this, Prophet Muhammad rebuked him saying: “Do you want to kill it twice? Wouldn’t it have been better for you to sharpen your knife before laying it down?” Unsurprisingly, Islam forbids hunting animals for mere sport. Instead, Islam only permits hunting animals for food and to sustain life. In doing so, Islam adopts a moderate and merciful approach that is beneficial for the animal kingdom and humanity alike. Such an approach ensures the continuity of species, the sustainability of an ecosystem, and the sufficient food resources for humanity. In closing, I must mention that given the immense level of respect and dignity Islam affords animals, one can imagine how much more sacred Islam holds human life. The actions of extremists are not only contrary to Islam, but stand antithetical to Islam’s teachings of grace and mercy inherent to every living being. In fact, in Chapter 5, Verse 33, the Qur’an embraces and echoes the Talmudic teaching that “to take one innocent life is to kill all humanity, and likewise to save one life is akin to saving all humanity.” Indeed, all life is sacred in Islam. Whether a Muslim purchases a farm animal to help cultivate her land, slaughters an animal to consume for herself and her family, distributes or sells its meat for food, or adopts a beloved kitten; the burden of responsibility remains the same. Muslims must lead with mercy, compassion, and empathy, even taking into account the feelings of animals by treating them with dignity and respect. Accordingly, Prophet Muhammad famously declared, “All the creatures are the children of God and the best among you is he who treats His creatures well.” Sources and References: Sahih Bukhari, Sunan Abu Daud, Abu Dawud, Sahih Muslim, Al-Tabarani and Al-Hakim, Mishkat.

WHAT’S COOKIN'? GUEST CONTRIBUTOR, EMILY GREGORY OF WWW.MEATLESSMEALS.NET
Intro from the New England Pet & Home team: We are delving into some lifestyle-focused articles that also connect to our good friends at the Humane Society. We thought it might be fun to explore a variety of recipes that brings some diversity to your homemade meals. __________
A plant-based diet involves well... eating plants. Simple enough, right? The terms vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and plant-based can get a little confusing. All these types of diets center around not eating animals. Pescatarians do not eat cows, pigs, or fowl, but do consume fish. A vegetarian on the other hand, consumes no meat, and a vegan also does not eat dairy products or eggs. Vegans also do not use animal products or anything that is tested on animals. So no leather, fur, or feathers and no products often tested on animals like many skincare and haircare products. Often there is a strong ethical component to these dietary decisions. A whole food plant-based diet involves eating whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes. The list of foods to avoid includes meat, dairy, oil, processed foods, and refined sugar. Typically, those that choose to eat this way do so for health reasons. The goal is to eat whole-foods in their natural state to promote optimal health Now we make it tasty! Plants have always gotten a bad rap. Ever seen one of those old black and white video clips where the family is sitting around the dinner table and Johnny is refusing to eat his brussels sprouts? This fictitious scenario happens all the time in real life... with grown adults. Oftentimes kids grow up hating vegetables which translates to them being anti-plant adults. Whether you are interested in fully transitioning into a plant-based lifestyle or just want to incorporate more of these nutrient dense foods into your diet, step one is to be open to the idea that eating plants can be quite tasty and satisfying.
WHY EAT PLANTS? There are numerous reasons eating plants makes sense. From a health standpoint alone, plants are superior. According to T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, by “adopt[ing] a whole food, plant-based lifestyle you can increase the odds that you will lower risk of prostate, breast, & other cancers, prevent, even reverse, heart disease, prevent & treat diabetes, lose weight & have more energy, and live longer. Eating plants can prevent and reverse heart disease. When Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine”, he wasn’t joking. The right foods can literally heal your body and create a powerhouse of homeostasis that keeps disease at bay. Transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle can be challenging, but the reward can be a healthier and happier way of life. If this way of eating interests you but you feel you may need some assistance, please make a point to reach out to me regarding my plant-based nutrition coaching services at www.meatlessmeals.net!

ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF:
WAYWARD NORTHEAST
A SHOP FOR KIND PEOPLE + THEIR BEST FRIENDS
Charles Stanton, Founder When I came to New England in 2019, I knew I wanted to create a pet and home retail outlet of some kind. I wanted something unique that offered highly curated items for people and the pets they love. Two years later, I am better acquainted with the beautiful message of kindness from the founders of Beekman 1802. It resonated with me. Beekman 1802 is an ethically produced goat’s milk beauty line. It is not just the flagship brand carried by Wayward NorthEast shop. Instead, Beekman is the very inspiration for every piece of merchandise that will be available at Wayward. Their philosophy of kindness is reflected in every item we have chosen. Espousing that motto, we have painstakingly selected sustainably harvested items from the country’s best vendors while also partnering with local New England artisans. We have researched each vendor to learn about their impact on the environment, the ways they value their employees, their philosophies regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, and (of course) the humane treatment of animals with no animal testing ever! That kindness quest has yielded unique collections for home, self-care, and the pets we love.

There are few things better than sharing time with friends. Reminiscing, reflecting, even just updating one another… through all the ups and downs, our dearest friends are often the first call or visit we make when we need an ear and many of our most memorable milestones involve those special people in our lives. World-renowned musician and storyteller, Betty Buckley, has never taken a moment of her career for granted. Her immense talents on stage and screen alike are incredibly impressive and this dynamic firecracker of a human being exudes power and energy even through a casual zoom conversation. There is a magnetism she possesses, and it is almost palpable. That is tempered and balanced with an incredible kindness, authenticity, and gentleness one might not expect from a star of her caliber. She sinks into a conversation wholeheartedly and makes it abundantly clear why the world has fallen in love with this diva many times over. We met Betty by way of one of her closest friends, Thomas Fennessey, whose career is equally as impressive on the other side of the camera. Thom’s brilliant wit, contagious laugh, and abundant personality and humor make it easy to understand how these two powerhouses became integral parts of one another’s lives. Throughout the conversation, the pair finished each other’s sentences and occasionally interrupted one another to poke fun and evoke a laugh or eye roll. After a bit of catchup between the two, they shared some of their story with us.
Growing up as an American living in London, Thom was surrounded by immense talent in the film and live Thom with Andra Day and Director theater industry and knew from a very early age that he wanted to forge a path in the industry as filming well. This Myriam Santos for Joe conscious and deliberate choice to pursue a creative career is something Thom and Betty share. Biden’s Inauguration parade.
Thom lovingly described his earliest memories of his New York-born parents and how their appreciation for music, theater, and art so deeply influenced him. Thom’s parents took their three children to see the best theater, museums, and concert halls that London had to offer. His ever-expanding childhood appreciation for cinema, art, and music, influenced the passionate and beautiful life he has forged. Similarly, Betty reflected on her earliest experiences as a young singer and actress and particularly recalled an experience attending a performance. She envisioned herself onstage and the powerful and almost out of body experience was a realization for her. The experience was a vision and further confirmed what she knew her life could and should be. That moment was one of many affirmations along the path to international stardom. Thom and Tallulah competing for who is best looking.
The beauty of their respective stories is that each of them knew with perfect clarity where they belonged and where they were headed. The path for each of them was self-forged and very much intentional.
Betty on stage with her band and with her biggest fans. It’s a lucky bunch!
Betty’s unparalleled and award-winning career has encompassed TV, film, stage, and concert work around the globe. She is probably best known as the quintessential musical theatre actress. Highlights of her astounding stage career starring in eleven Broadway shows in New York City and in London, which include her Tony-winning performance as Grizabella the Glamour Cat in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “CATS”, her Olivier Awardnominated performance as the deluded, silentscreen star Norma Desmond in “SUNSET BOULEVARD", and her recent year-long US National tour playing the titular role in “HELLO DOLLY”. Some memorable television and movie highlights include everyone’s favorite stepmother, Abby Bradford, in “Eight is Enough”, recurring roles in “Preacher”, “Oz” and “Pretty Little Liars”. Other notable appearances include Dixie Scott in the Academy Award winning “Tender Mercies”, Ms. Collins in the cult hit film
“Carrie”, Virginia Earp in “Wyatt Earp”, and Mrs. Jones in M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening”. Most recently she starred as Dr. Fletcher in the International Box Office hit “Split”. With her band of musicians, she has recorded an incredible eighteen albums! Reviewing just a few moments of Betty’s career leaves anyone wondering which of her genres is most impressive. Thom is a multiple award-winning producer whose career has traversed many mediums in entertainment. He has worked with some of the finest directors and artists in the business to create memorable entertainment and advertising. Notable milestones include his first job out of college with Julia Phillips who was Producer of “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind” and “Taxi Driver”, producing the initial interviews with Bob Durst for what would become HBO’s groundbreaking series “The Jinx: The lives and Deaths of Robert Durst”, and he is especially proud of the recent short film he produced for Director David Nutter (“Game of Thrones”) called “RISING", addressing diversity in America for the AD Council of America. Thom’s impressive work yielded an equally impressive path producing music videos and concert broadcast media for artists such as Mariah Carey, The Chainsmokers, Katy Perry, Andra Day, Selena Gomez, Creed, Foo Fighters, Chemical Brothers, James Blunt, Alicia Thom with M. Night Shyamalan and Audra Keys, OKGO, Rage Against the Day while filming the “Rise Up” video Machine, Lifehouse, Shinedown, Smashmouth among many others. He also was Production Manager of Betty’s album “Ghostlight” produced by T Bone Burnett. The New England Pet & Home Creative team voiced a collective “wow” at that list and particularly noted Thom’s work with the late icon of our time, Michael Jackson, on the Grammy-nominated “Earth Song” video from the History Album. Thom and Betty had a unique opportunity to collaborate when they were individually (and unbeknown to one another) hired on simultaneous projects with acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan. Betty was cast in a lead role in the film “Split”, while Thom was hired to produce Night’s music video for Andra Day’s hit anthem “Rise Up”. Their time together overlapped in Philadelphia while both projects were being filmed. Thom’s work and career indicate his remarkable talent. When complimented, he simply shrugs, smiles, and responds, “I enjoy it.” As the person fortunate enough to interview Betty and Thom, I can assure you it isn’t an overstatement to say that I was in awe during the conversation. Despite plenty of interviews with famous and powerful people, I admit to I needed to take a few breaths before starting the zoom call. My own love and connection to music made this a very special opportunity for me to speak to two people for whom I have tremendous respect. Fortunately, Thom and Betty are incredibly kind, generous in spirit, painfully funny, and incredibly welcoming.
The zoom call gets crashed! So cute!
The greatest joy of the conversation emerged in tandem with the mention of their respective pets. Thom’s eyes light up when he talks about his beloved Havanese pup, Tallulah, and Betty became even more lovable when she reached down to bring her adorable Shih Tzu on screen. It was so very endearing to see that such abundant lives and talents are so fully enamored with their pet companions. To give insight into their level of compassion for and devotion to animals, each of them have included their pets as part of professional contract negotiations so they can make sure they don’t have to be without their best friends during lengthy professional engagements or while on the road. Tallulah joins Thom at his office every day. Those of us at New England Pet and Home are completely on board with the idea that no contract is complete without a clause for the claws!
When not on the road, both Thom and Betty have created incredibly beautiful lives for themselves. They both include comfort, music, and pets in their lists for what makes a house a home. Thom’s gorgeous and perfectly appointed apartment in Los Angeles is filled to the brim with books, music of all kinds, and an impressive art collection. It was his attendance at the musical Sunset Boulevard on Broadway that gave him the opportunity to meet Betty the first time when she was performing the lead role. Amazed with her powerful performance and her unfailing ability to fully inhabit the characters she portrays; he went backstage to meet Betty. They immediately hit it off and a beautiful new friendship was formed. Seeing Thom’s incredible home during our conversation, I was struck by the charm and beauty. Art abounds on every wall and stacks of books so abundant that some serve as end tables. It’s a beautiful place surrounded by inspiration. Like Thom’s home in Los Angeles, Betty’s expansive, sprawling ranch in Texas is simultaneously approachable and impressive. Surrounded by animals and a bevy of natural assets, Betty has established a reputation for herself as a voice for the voiceless. She has rescued and rehomed countless animals of various kinds including once accepting a semi-feral cat from Morgan Fairchild. She laughs about her many rescue experiences and says in the most charmingly effortless way, “Of course I will help. Why wouldn’t I?” Betty shared with us that she recently took on a litter of kittens with the intent of helping find a long-term home. Certainly famous for many reasons, many of us know Betty’s iconic singing because of her unparalleled rendition of “Memory” in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS. With that performance paired with her animal rescue work, one might say that Betty has gone from cats to kittens. Despite my initial feelings of nervousness, the conversation with Betty and Thom can be summed up very simply by acknowledging the kindness of both these incredible people. Our conversation was interrupted by life and phone calls and countless people needing each of them during our conversation and it struck me how incredibly kind they both were with me and everyone else. It was both inspiring and refreshing and the world would do well to emulate the lives they both lead and the kindness and care they emanate. It makes perfect sense why these two would have so intentionally invested in one another and it certainly makes sense that these kind and caring people would also devote so much time to their beloved animal companions. It all serves as a beautiful reminder that, whether human or animal, life is infinitely better when enjoyed with our best friends.
A PARTNERSHIP WITH HISTORICAL SOCIETIES THROUGHOUT NEW ENGLAND
T A I L S T H R O Uexploring G Hnew england’s TIM E pet history New Englanders tend to adapt love of and time with pets based on our four unique seasons and how we engage with one another. Whether a Fall foliage hike with pups through the White Mountains, cat cuddles in Vermont during Spring showers, or Summer dog walks through Boston’s quintessentially “New England” brownstones in Back Bay or Beacon Hill; our love of nature and animals provides a strong sense of place for those of us fortunate enough to call New England “home”. New England Pet & Home reached out to historical societies in the New England region requesting images and information related to pet history. The responses have been extraordinary. Each issue of NEPH will feature images submitted to us by one of our new partners as a way to share a love of pets and explore the rich history of our region.
This image is of Blanche M. Gerrish with her dog, “Phil Sheridan,” on “Miss Harriet P. Dame’s Rock,” at the New Hampshire Veterans’ Association campground at the Weirs, 1896. Dame was one of the most decorated nurses of the Civil War. She served with the New Hampshire Second Regiment for nearly the length of the war, insisting on traveling to the front lines to tend to her “boys.” The namesake for Blanche’s dog, Major General Philip H. Sheridan of the Union Army, is known to have pursued General Robert E. Lee’s army with “dogged determination.” Courtesy of the New Hampshire Historical Society. This photograph is part of a collection of more than 250,000 photographic images preserved in the collection of the New Hampshire Historical Society. Founded in 1823, the Society is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving, preserving, and sharing New Hampshire history. Nowhere will you find a more extensive collection of objects, archives, and photographs related to the state's history. The Society shares these vast collections through its library, museum, website, publications, exhibitions, and youth and adult educational programs. In 2019, the Society launched a new online educational resource for students and educators called “Moose on the Loose: Social Studies for Granite State Kids.” Located in downtown Concord, the Society’s 1911 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Hampshire Historical Society is not a state-funded agency; all of its work is made possible by membership dues and contributions.
