BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON More than 400 locals have flocked to Brisbane City Council’s online traffic study to voice their opinion on issues in the Newstead, Teneriffe and New Farm areas, identifying several key areas for improvement. Data obtained by the Village News shows that about 1032 comments were made on the study, providing feedback for council to analyse and respond to with traffic works. Residents shared their opinions mostly about parking issues, with at least 222 comments. At least 201 comments were made about public transport, 160 on traffic volumes and pedestrian issues and 130 about speeding. Many residents want trafficcalming measures introduced around Teneriffe and New Farm. Several residents were especially concerned about the Dogget Street and Commercial Road intersection, with calls made for traffic lights and other mechanisms to reduce traffic issues at that corner. The Merthyr Road and Brunswick Street intersection attracted several suggestions for turning lights to improve safety. Metered parking was also a hot topic with many residents divided on the issue and putting forward

proposals such as metered parking across the peninsula with residents’ permits introduced to the area. Cycling issues were also a common theme, with at least 51 comments about the safety of cyclists and even cyclists being problematic to pedestrians and drivers in certain areas. Pedestrian crossings have been strongly pushed along Vernon Terrace, with respondents complaining about the lack of crossing opportunities in the Teneriffe promenade when busy. The Newstead focal point around Gasworks attracted substantial comment, especially by people seeking adequate pedestrian crossing facilities. Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard said that the comments allowed council to build a better picture of key issues within the area. “Council will now review this feedback to ensure that we can target residents’ specific traffic concerns, before finalising a plan for traffic improvements to respond to issues identified,” Cr Howard said. “Residents and businesses will have further opportunities to provide feedback, with Council anticipating to release the draft improvement plans later this year,” she said. “This financial year, Council has allocated $257,000 for this important traffic study to help formulate improvements to traffic conditions and make the city’s roads safer for residents, visitors and motorists in general.”

Appeal application made in Mactaggarts fence battle village comment MIKE O’CONNOR The Battle of the Mactaggarts Fence continues with the owners of the Eves on the River restaurant property making an application to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal for Leave to Appeal the Adjudicator’s Orders allowing the fence to remain. In their application, the owners of the lot claim the tribunal adjudicator erred in law in making this decision. They allege that the information provided to lot owners of Mactaggarts Place apartments by the body corporate when they voted to build a fence shutting off pedestrian access from Vernon Terrace to the river walk was incomplete and incorrect. As a result, they say, when lot owners voted to approve the fence they were not making an informed decision. The building of the fence also failed to properly consider the impact

on businesses operating out of the apartment block and was therefore unreasonable, they claim. The decision to build the fence, they say, was not balanced and not in the best interests of all lot owners. They are seeking to have the body corporate’s decision declared invalid and set aside and have asked that the body corporate be required to remove the fence. Alternately, they request that a section of the fence be removed to allow public access to the river or that any gate be left open during the trading hours of businesses in the block. The owners making the application and other lot owners who have supported moves to have the fence removed are to be congratulated. To my mind, erecting it was an ill-considered move at odds with the community spirit of the peninsula and allowing access during small business trading hours is both fair and reasonable. The next annual general meeting of the Mactaggarts Place lot owners is due to be held in June. It promises to be interesting.

Cameron Noble

Up to his neck in Youngcare An adventurous local resident will take on one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world to raise much-needed funds for Youngcare by attempting to swim the English Channel in August. New Farm-based banking executive Cameron Noble is well into his gruelling training schedule with the help of retired Australian longdistance swimmer Trent Grimsey. In 2012 Trent broke the world record, crossing the English Channel in 6 hours 55 minutes and it remains the record. Still five months out, Cameron’s training involves 30-40km of swimming each week either in the pool or in the ocean at Redcliffe or Burleigh. He also recently completed the iconic Rottnest Channel swim, 19.7km from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island in Western Australia in 8 hours 15 minutes. “I don’t think I’ll come close to Trent’s English Channel record,” Cameron said. “Most people take around 12-14 hours. I will just be happy to cross it.”

Cameron is hoping to raise $500,000 for Youngcare, enough to build much-needed housing in Wooloowin to help get young people with high-care needs out of aged care. The Youngcare Share House at Wooloowin in Brisbane gives young people with high-care needs the opportunity to experience the same lifestyle as others their age, with care provided by Wesley Mission Queensland. “After hearing about the great work Youngcare does in transitioning young people out of aged care, I couldn’t think of a better cause and it’s great to see their work brought to life right here in Brisbane,” Cameron said. “My wife was also keen to see me trim down, so that might be a nice flow-on benefit – although some might say this is an extreme measure to just lose a few kilos,” he said. School building to go ahead A new two-storey building has been approved for New Farm State School after a master planning exercise. This first stage of development (shown here) will be a general learning areas building, comprising seven learning spaces and 12 car parks. Consultation on the development and the master plan was led by the Department of Education and Training in collaboration with local stakeholders, including the principal, a representative of the Parents and Citizens group, the master planning architects and other community representatives. The member for Brisbane Central, Grace Grace, and the department said they expected that the project would be completed by the end of this year.

“Thanks to the masterplan and funding from the Palaszczuk Government, work has now commenced on a new two-storey building which will be home to much needed brand-new classrooms,” Ms Grace said. She said the project aimed to address short-to-medium-term incatchment enrolment growth, to be ready for the start of school next year.

Historic school prepares itself for future direction BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON

The pace of change in the world is increasing, not decreasing, and our young women are going out into a world where in their lifetime it will change substantially. - MS O’KANE

At present, All Hallows’ educates around 1550 students across its 3-hectare campus. “That’s the size we aim to maintain – we’re not looking to increase the size of our year levels,” Ms O’Kane said. “We’re blessed by our location and that we’re on every transport hub and are accessible from every part of the city. “We’re lucky that we have so many parents want their daughters at the

school,” she said. “We are a large school by any measure. It’s such a spacious and beautiful campus where there’s no sense of being squashed in. “The pace of change in the world is increasing, not decreasing, and our young women are going out into a world where in their lifetime it will change substantially,” she said. “We have to be preparing them to be people who can embrace change, take it, run with it and be leaders.”

Catherine O’Kane loves to learn and it’s a skill that has helped her tackle her first two years as principal of All Hallows’ School, Petrie Bight, with enthusiasm. “There’s still a lot more to learn – that’s part of the joy of the journey,” she said. Ms O’Kane said she was thrilled to be able to facilitate education of young women in this rapidly and everchanging world. “It’s a beautiful school and I’m so blessed to be principal of All Hallows’. It’s certainly the greatest honour of my career,” Ms O’Kane said. “It’s a school with such rich tradition and such an amazing history as the oldest secondary school in the state – the fact that it is an allgirls school as well, I feel, is quite significant for Queensland. “To follow the work of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy who came with such a strong vision for the importance of the education of

women and girls for the betterment of society is amazing.” The school has recently undertaken a three-year strategic exercise, to plan for and deal with coming challenges. Ms O’Kane said the school would now embark on a master facilities planning process, looking at the vision for the physical resources of the campus for the next 10 years. “There are two challenges: refurbishing is difficult because it is challenging to build in a school, but there’s also a difficulty in changing the way teachers teach – the pedagogy of it,” she said. One of the large storms in 2014 damaged a considerable amount of roofing at the school, hence the scaffolding that engulfs the site. “We’ve had a lot of comments over the past 18 months about the work that’s being done around the school,” Ms O’Kane said. “While it looks like we’re a massive construction site, we’re more of a massive ‘re-roofing’ site!”

Underhanded swipe at women’s choices village view BETH J LEACH There are a lot of confronting things about getting older but I didn’t foresee any associated with my choice of underwear until I saw the new Bonds ad on TV. As regular readers of my column will know, I’m really happy in my skin and with my age. I love my life and enjoy each birthday. But I recently watched one of the new Bonds “Comfytails” ads, filmed as if in flashback to the 90s, telling of the woes of choosing the “dental floss of Satin” or “fashionable underwear” and it really annoyed me. The story goes on to explain that in her 40s the woman became wise and started to choose comfort over style. What? I object! As if it’s not enough that there are ageist prejudices existing in our communities, work environments and culture, they have to take a swipe at our underwear now, too? Because “of course”, in our 40s,

we women wouldn’t need to be fashionable or feel sexy. No, we’re over that. We just want to put on those bed slippers and rub our varicose veins on a Saturday night. Oh, yes. Serve me up a whole load of beige please and let me age quietly in the corner without being noticed. Well, guess what, Bonds? I’m not interested in your comfy undies at 46 years old and I doubt I’ll be interested when I’m 80. Put them on me at my funeral, if you must. I will not be ushered into your seductively soft fabrics in exchange for visible elastic, thick-sided panty lines. Not ever! You have drawn the line, put an age on your target but you’ve missed it. Why not instead, aim at a certain personality type or mood, not an age bracket? I will always fight ferociously to defend my right to be myself and not conform to the stereotype of what’s expected, to defy the boxes that society tries to put me in. And as one ages, there are a whole lot of boxes people try to put you in. So, here I stand, defending my 40 plus, fashionable choices. And be warned, Bonds. Hands off my bras!

One of New Farm’s oldest gems has turned 100, with local resident Rosa Accornero celebrating her birthday earlier this year. Rosa’s son, Peter Accornero, said it was a wonderful afternoon. “I went through a list in my head of people who had meant something significant to Rosa over the years,” Mr Accornero said. “A number of relatives came, some making the trek from as far as North Queensland and Hong Kong.” Ms Accornero has lived in the same block in New Farm for 35 years, moving down to Brisbane from Ingham in 1956. Peter’s wife Elaine prepared a lavish afternoon tea. “She really enjoyed the afternoon and remembered everybody! She certainly had a few surprises seeing everyone.” Ms Accornero received letters from the Queen, the Governor General,

the Prime Minister, the Queensland Premier and the Governor of Queensland, Paul De Jersey. Governor de Jersey had an hourlong afternoon tea with Ms Accornero, where Mr Accornero said they “got out the special occasion biscuits”. April 2017 I villageNews

Bin move a rubbish idea Brisbane City Council, whatever were you thinking when you removed the permanent rubbish bin from the pavement in Macrossan Street in the city? With a convenience store, three high-rise residential unit blocks and a hotel in the cul de sac where the bin has been for years, now there is no bin within three city blocks of us. There are cigarettes on the ground, litter and takeaway coffee cups galore. So thank you, Council: now we the residents are your unpaid garbage collectors as we pick up any rubbish we see in order to keep our neighbourhood clean and litter free. There are huge regular campaigns to keep Brisbane clean and tidy and

having a bin removed is something we didn’t expect to see. Patricia A Heron, Petrie Bight

Street needs revamp I don’t think it’s enough to say something should be preserved because it’s old, if it’s rundown and/ or in a flood zone or if there are better alternatives in the community interest. Butterfield Street, Herston, near the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, includes a lot of old industrial buildings and really needs to be cleaned up. And the nine mostly-old houses parkside next to it (one of which is mine) are in a flood zone. At the risk of irking town planners and engineers whom I imagine saying: “No, you can’t do that, building up land against flood impacts on neighbours!”, it would be a public service to build up the land from opposite the hospital generally all the way to the Rasey Park bikeway and redevelop it with a supermarket, bistros, a boutique hotel for families of patients as well as business people, consulting suites and a lot of car parks under. John Dobinson, Herston

Suburb consultation goes around again BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON Residents will have another opportunity to voice their opinions on the draft Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan, two months after the document was rejected by the State Government and handed back to Brisbane City Council. City Planning chair Cr Julian Simmonds said Council was inviting submissions to provide feedback on the draft plan between April 19 and June 2. “Council received more than 70 submissions on the draft plan in mid2016 and after careful consideration has made changes in response to community concerns about the potential impact of new development on local character housing and residential amenity,” Cr Simmonds said. “With these changes in place, Council will now invite locally based

businesses and residents to comment on the draft document, before it is finalised, with the plan expected to be adopted into City Plan in late 2017.” The plan was not approved because of “technical advice” that was given to the Deputy Premier after Brisbane City Council submitted a document that was significantly different from that which underwent public consultation.

Council received more than 70 submissions on the draft plan in mid2016 and ...has made changes in response to community concerns ... - CR SIMMONDS

A spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning said that the State Government had no role in the plan during the consultation phase. “Brisbane City Council has been asked to undertake another round of public consultation,” the spokesperson said. “Following consultation Council is required to resubmit the plan for approval.”

More trees and traffic calming urged for peninsula to ensure our roads can handle the increase in traffic coming in and out of the peninsula. “We think it’s the opposite. We believe that people use the CityGlider and CityCat during the week and just use their cars on weekends. More car park spaces is not a negative,” Mr Cavallucci said. He said Cavcorp’s current project, the 15-storey “Lucent” in Longland Street, would include 2 acres (0.8 hectares) of green space in the form of a street-level piazza lined with restaurants and shops. “We’ll have everyone walking through our site from Gasworks and from the ferry. “One of the restaurants will have a bocce court attached to it. “When stage two, “Luminare”, is built there will be a further 17 retail outlets. “We’re looking for traders specializing in artisan food, health and wellness, a shoe repairer/cobbler, a dog groomer, a coffee roaster, a day spa and outdoor entertainment. “You have to get the right retail mix. You can’t just go for the highest rents. Some people will pay a lower rent

BY MIKE O’CONNOR Developer Damien Cavallucci has called for more tree planting, more walkable footpaths which will naturally reduce the speed of cars in the Newstead-Teneriffe precinct. The managing director of Cavcorp, Mr Cavallucci said he wanted to work with Mirvac and the other developers in the area to ensure a common vision. “I’m a big believer in trees and developers need to put in mature trees,” he said. “We need to light them with lanterns and make the footpaths more walkable and have more cars parked on the street, like in Europe. “Cars driving around looking for a park are increasing traffic. People are doing lap after lap looking for a car park. “Developers should also put in more parking spaces but the council has to carefully consider the numbers

Brisbane Central Scouts are looking for a new Group Leader because former leader Elizabeth West has stepped down after five years in the role. Ms West, now assistant Group Leader, said she formed the group five years ago after moving to the area. “My child was ready to start Joeys and the nearest group was at least 10-15 minutes’ drive from the area,” Ms West said. “I’d just moved into New Farm at that time and I’d been involved in Scouting for around 10 years already,” she said. “I thought there was probably enough demand in this area so I started up a group here.” The role of Group Leader involves managing the other adults involved in the Scouting group, with much of the Scout know-how and responsibilities already delegated to members of that group. “In this role, you’ll be leading the adults, not the kids – it’s well suited to someone who’s well organised and a good communicator,” Ms West said. “We have a great set-up in the group with a lot of jobs farmed out to a lot

The Submarines Association Australia (SAA) Queensland will conduct a dawn service on Anzac Day. It will start at 5:30am at the Submariner’s Walk Heritage Trail in Teneriffe, the third service there since it opened. About 700 people turned out to the service last year. The president of SAA Queensland, Don Currell OAM, said that he hoped to see as many locals as possible. “This year will be special. The sign called Submariners’ Heritage Trail will be energised by LED lighting and will be clearly visible from the riverside and the walkway,” Mr Currell said. “Also in front of the Engine Room Café will be silhouettes’ of six classes of submarine, all done to scale. “In the near future, directional signs will be installed to help visitors find their way either from New Farm ferry terminal, the Powerhouse restaurant or Teneriffe ferry terminal.” Another service will commence at 9am at the Sandakan memorial in New Farm Park, a memorial that commemorates those who died in the Sandakan death marches in World War II.

of people, so this person would be monitoring that workload,” she said. “You don’t have to be up on all the Scout technical stuff or be there every week, you just have to be keeping everyone organised and on track.” A Scouting group existed in the Peninsula from the 1930s to the 1990s, closing due to a lack of numbers. Since its re-establishment in May 2012, the number of Scouts has increased into the 30s, including Ms West’s two daughters. Ms West said that Scouting taught children a whole way of life that enabled them to be productive members of society. “There’s quite a lot of research that’s come out recently on adults

who have done Scouting and it’s found that they have a lot of resilience and fewer instances of depression,” Ms West said. “The real penny-drop moment for me about Scouts was when I borrowed a giant pop-up shelter for my backyard and my daughter Madeline took charge of three or four adults to get it up,” she said. “It’s a great thing to do with your kids. You can go on bushwalks and camps with them, along with a great group of other adults and their kids.” The group meets every Tuesday at New Farm State School. Hello possums, is there an elephant in the house? PAUL FAIRWEATHER A few years ago, the late New Zealand architect Ian Attfield recalled the story that when he was redesigning the Wellington Museum, part of the brief was to display a stored 100-year-old stuffed elephant. To his surprise, this elephant was still urinating. However, upon closer inspection, he discovered a family of possums had taken up residence inside the elephant and were relieving themselves through the elephant’s groin. Possums are very cute but when they take up residence in inappropriate places they can be real pests. Besides the screeching at night, they make an enormous racket when they have triple-jump races wearing hobnailed boots across my long flat roof. Sometimes I wonder whether there is a herd of elephants up there. A while back I would regularly wake in the middle of the night to a noise that sounded a lot like an elephant trumpeting. It was quite different from the sound of dogs howling, or cats (or neighbours for that matter) fighting or mating. In my half sleep between dreaming and thinking, the only logical, albeit drowsy explanation seemed to be that it was some unusual possum call. As I would doze off with the Baby Elephant Walk song playing in my mind, I would make a mental note to Google “possum sounds” but never remembered. Sometime later when de-cluttering the toy boxes in the TV room, I heard that possum call again. For half a moment, it occurred to me that the possums were nesting in

the toy box but it turned out that the sound was emanating from an infant’s puzzle book. There were four buttons that made different noises: a fire-engine, a racing car, a duck and an elephant! Inexplicably the elephant button was going off at random times during the night, trumpeting through the house. Finally, I could sleep easy as the elephant in the room had been addressed. That left only the possums. While there are many resident possums around the house, I don’t have to do constant battle with bush turkeys, as many Teneriffe residents do. Mind you, the attention that they would give my often-neglected yard could only benefit it. While bush turkeys and possums are protected wildlife, when people complain of the former, I pass on my mother’s outback recipe. The bush turkey meat is very tough, so to cook it, you boil the turkey in a large pot along with a stone of equal size. When the rock is soft, you can eat the turkey! Maybe I could have found a possum solution had the Kiwi architect given me a recipe for possum pie. Then the problem might have been solved, not just the puzzle.

Founding historian dies One of the founding members of the New Farm Historical Society, Isabelle Davis, died at her home on February 14. Isabelle was born in 1930 in South Grafton, New South Wales, and moved to the family home at 22 Abbott Street, New Farm, aged 7 after the death of her father. After a move to Goondiwindi in the 1940s during World War II, Isabelle and her mother returned to “Yarrawonga”, the family home in Abbott Street. Isabelle attended the New Farm State School, Somerville House and Brisbane Girls Grammar, and on graduating from school worked as a clerk at IBC where she met her husband Ken. Isabelle and Ken shared not only their lives but the same birthday: February 24, 1930.

They were married on June 16, 1956, at the Valley Presbyterian Church which is now a night club. Isabelle was a volunteer with a range of local community organisations including Archibald House and Lady Musgrave Lodge, refuges and safe hostels for single women, and Meals on Wheels. Her financial expertise included acting as auditor for several voluntary organisations and as the first treasurer for the New Farm Historical Society. Isabelle had a phenomenal memory and was the “go-to” person for information on people, places, houses and events in the New Farm peninsula.

Team teaching scores goals BY JAMES JESSUP

Holy Spirit School New Farm is proving that team-based teaching which personalises a program for each student can improve children’s learning outcomes. Primary learning leader Mrs Rebecca McAlister-Visic said the carefocused program had been tweaked

over three years to serve the school community better. “The program is really an approach where we get to know every single student in the school and then we respond to their needs. “We’re getting terrific results. “We’ve just found out we’re one of the leading Brisbane primary schools. We’ve got really impressive NAPLAN results.” According to myschool.edu.au, Holy Spirit performs above the national average in most categories of NAPLAN testing. Rebecca said the teaching style differed from most other schools because it used a team approach involving diverse skillsets.

HISTORY

The third name on the honour board historical society GERARD BENJAMIN On Saturday June 9, 1917, New Farm Bowls Club members gathered to unveil a handsome honour board, the gift of Ben Winston, the quality billiard table maker of Browne Street. With World War I in its fourth year, the honour board listed more than 30 names of members and members’ sons who were at the Front. Sure to be present would have been Mr Seaton Dun Scougall, a commercial traveller of Bowen Terrace, whose son’s name was third from the top. Frank Burdett Scougall, 25 and a clerk, had enlisted just 15 days after the declaration of war in August 1914,

F.B. Scougall, the third name on the New Farm Bowls Club’s honour board. (The Qlder, 10 Nov 1917)

possibly impatient that hostilities might be “over by Christmas”. Scougall was at the Gallipoli landing in April 1915 where he gained his commission as second-lieutenant. Wounded shortly afterwards, he was sent to England for treatment. By the time the honour board was unveiled, (First) Lieutenant Scougall had been on active duty in France with the 9th Battalion for more than 18 months. For club members with Darling Downs connections, the name

Scougall would have rung a bell. “Any chance you’re related to Richard Todd Scougall?” someone may have ventured. S.D. Scougall’s reply? “He was my father.” Richard Todd Scougall, whose own grandfather had been a prominent Scots shipowner and merchant, arrived in Australia in 1832. In 1840, he married Catherine Dun, whose father owned a New South Wales property called “Duninald”, a name echoed for the Scougall residence in Bowen Terrace. This coincided with the period pastoral pioneer Patrick Leslie overlanded sheep from New South Wales to take up land near Warwick. At the same time, R.T. Scougall sent his superintendent, Henry Dennis, north to seek new sheep pastures. Taking a route through where Goondiwindi now stands, Dennis crossed the Darling Downs and took up Jimbour (about 200,000 acres) for his employer, and chose Jondaryan (around 100,000 acres) for himself. Writing in 1938, journalist Clem Lack (then a resident of Harcourt Street, Teneriffe) stated what was folklore in the Scougall family: “The first wool to cross the Toowoomba Main Range belonged to Richard Todd Scougall at Jimbour.

“Whether it be true or not that Henry Dennis, his superintendent, was the first white man to set foot on the Downs, the fact remains that he must have reached the Downs, travelling by a different route, about the same time as Leslie or very shortly afterwards.” The claim came from the copy of a letter, held by an aged granddaughter of R.T. Scougall’s, which had been written by the woman’s father many years before. In it he outlined the route followed by Dennis in 1840, and he went on to say that Patrick Leslie was travelling through New England about the same time. Needless to say, mention of Jimbour and Jondaryan would have pricked up the ears of several New Farm Bowls Club members, since descendants of pioneering families such as Bell, Coxen, Deuchar and Kent had town residences in New Farm in the early days. Sometime after October 1917, a signwriter was given the melancholy task of placing the letters “K.A.” in front of the third name on the honour board. Lieutenant F.B. Scougall was killed in action near Ypres in Belgium on 20 September 1917.

Research urges steps to health senior voice TONY TOWNSEND Researchers at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Newcastle have found that increasing the number of steps taken each day from 4500 to 8800 or about 3km can lead to one day fewer in hospital every three years. An analysis of hospital records showed that for every increase of 1000 daily steps, the estimated overall number of hospital bed-days a year dropped by 9 per cent. An issues paper prepared by researchers from the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation suggested that treating acutely ill patients at home could slash treatment costs by up to 50 per cent and reduce mortality rates by 20 per cent. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) wants the hearing clinics industry to reconsider commissions, disclosure

and sales practices. In its report, Issues around the sale of hearing aids, the ACCC urges consumers to be aware that hearing clinics are mostly profit-making businesses like any other store. Consumers should shop around for the best hearing aid to suit their needs and at the best price. COUNCIL CONNECTIONS 2,000 HOSPITALITY JOBS CREATED FOR THE INNER CITY Brisbane’s tourism industry employment continues to gallop ahead because of our sensible employment creation policies here at Brisbane City Council. We were missing 121,000 visitors each year due to a lack of hotel supply but since we announced an incentive to attract new hotels to Brisbane, hotel supply has grown by 4,200 rooms, with 17 new hotels and a further 10 under construction here in the inner city. These new hotels alone are contributing an additional 2,000 jobs to the city - we are building our local economy and creating new jobs. The Alex Perry Hotel in Newstead, The Johnson in Spring Hill, and the recently opened Sage Hotel in James Street are our newest local economy heavy lifters. We’re looking forward the start of operations for the Calile Hotel in James Street too.

SPRING HILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATE Residents will have another opportunity to provide feedback on the Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan, with Council inviting submissions on the draft plan between 19 April and 2 June 2017. We received more than 70 submissions on the draft plan in mid-2016 and after careful consideration have made changes in response to community concerns. With these changes in place, Council will now invite locally based businesses and residents to comment on the draft document, before it is finalised, with the plan expected to be adopted into City Plan in late 2017.

VERNON TERRACE TREES We all agree that the tree lined boulevard along Vernon Terrace and Macquarie Street is magnificent, and I thank residents who contacted the office recently about this area. Damage to properties, due to the planting of inappropriate species, will need to be addressed and I have convened a community group of locals, relevant bodies corporate, and Council arborists to develop a tree management plan.

Have about Brisbane Metro by Friday 28 April 2017.

An audit will be conducted to identify all trees in this precinct so that the tree management plan can be prepared for short, medium and long term planning and future plantings.

DO YOU HAVE AN “OFF-THEBEATEN” TRACK STORY?

When in Switzerland, we decided to walk to the border with the Principality of Lichtenstein, having been told it was a mere 15 minutes away. We had walked for a solid hour before discovering, by chance, that you’d need to be on a well-equipped, highspeed road bike in order to reach the border in that time! Trekking back, we stopped at a restaurant in the town of Sargans, where we met an idiosyncratic and well-travelled Hungarian fellow and his friend. Having chatted for a bit, he then very kindly “secretly” shouted us dinner and drinks, having taken pity on us for our ill-fated border crossing attempt! A REALLY MEMORABLE DINING EXPERIENCE?

Enjoyed an amazing four-course “never-ending” dinner at a cliffside restaurant in Positano, Italy. For just €36 per person, it included more wonderful food than we could possibly eat. At the end of the dinner, we were then cajoled into eating complementary home-made biscuits and cakes and then finally, sent on our way with some take-home spices!

Maven Dental New Farm is a peaceful dental practice located in the heart of New Farm just 2km from the CBD. Their friendly team are committed to making every visit a pleasant and comfortable experience, and catering for patients’ general, cosmetic, emergency and family dental needs. They say the first step to a beautiful smile is healthy teeth and gums and they strongly believe that going back to basics and educating people about a healthy diet and correct oral maintenance is the key to having excellent oral health. Poor oral health has been linked to several health concerns including cardiovascular disease, increased risk

of stroke and heart attack, premature birth with low birth-weight in babies and increased risk of pneumonia, particularly in elderly patients. Some of the signs to look for are bleeding gums, swollen and inflamed gums, loose teeth, receding gums and bad breath. At each visit with Maven Dental New Farm, a dentist and dental hygienist will assess the overall health of each patient’s teeth and do a professional clean and polish. This process removes any bacterial deposits and plaque from above and below the gum surface. Once plaque has been removed, the teeth are polished, leaving them feeling smooth and fresh.

The dentist or dental hygienist will then illustrate how to care for teeth at home and recommend the correct products to use. Healthy teeth and gums lay the foundations not only for good oral health but also for future treatments including teeth whitening. Two simple steps to maintaining healthy teeth and gums are regular visits to a dentist and dental hygienist and good home care. For most people, twice-yearly visits to a dentist and dental hygienist are recommended. The team at Maven Dental New Farm are on duty six days a week to assist with any dental needs and questions about your oral health.

Beau makes it a dog day for flying villain BY TONY JONES Australia is famous for creatures that can kill you. They lurk in our oceans, our bushlands and our backyards. We have the doubtful honour of possessing the world’s most deadly snake, the Inland Taipan. It’s rapid delivery of venom – high in neurotoxins – can kill an adult in 45 minutes with symptoms including headache, nausea and paralysis. I have experienced these symptoms often. Thank god it was alcohol poisoning and not the result of an encounter with an Inland Taipan! In our gardens resides the deadliest spider on the planet, the funnel web. This fearsome arachnid can kill a person within an hour with just a single bite. It’s renowned for being aggressive and its fangs so large they can pierce fingernails or the sole of a rubber thong.

I always knew rubber thongs could cause death and I don’t mean just in a sartorial sense. I mean, quite literally, they could cause you to die! A trip to the beach can bring almost instant death when frolicking at the water’s edge and that’s not from the well-known killers like the great white shark or the deadly box jellyfish. No, it’s a bite from a lesser-known creature called the cone snail. The most likely way to encounter this snail is by stepping on one or picking up what looks like a pretty shell. One sting from this pretty killer carries enough venom to kill 15 healthy adults in hours. Living in Australia is most definitely for the brave and the strong. But I’m enough of an Australian not to worry overly about the aforementioned killers. My chance of encountering any of them is slim except perhaps for the cone snail. Beau and I are fond of an early morning dip in the ocean. However, the last person to die from the bite of a cone snail was in 1935. So I think the odds are in my favour that I won’t die from the bite of an angry mollusc. No, the creature to cause me the greatest of heart palpitations, and to break out in a cold sweat with fear and horror, is the ghastly cockroach!

Women In

business

I’m not talking about the little household cocky, as loathsome as they are. It’s their cousin, the much larger garden cockroach that frightens and appals me. The other evening while preparing dinner, I heard the dreaded whirr of wings and a large shadow fell across the kitchen benchtop. Looking up from chopping onions, my worst nightmare was realised: an enormous cockroach had landed on the floor not a metre from me. So large was it that, if you had two, you could have strapped them to your feet and used them as a means of transportation. This was going to be a bloody and awful battle to the death. It fought with a great and terrible determination and just at that moment, when humiliating defeat was staring me in the eye and I thought I would have to abandon the house, Beau came to the rescue. He rushed in from the courtyard – attracted no doubt by my shrieks for help – and so fast was his volition, his feet couldn’t find purchase on the polished timber floor and he fell awkwardly, sliding with unstoppable momentum into the leg of the dining table, hitting it with considerable force. A giant can of insect spray – I had abandoned it earlier as an ineffective

and useless tool against such a formidable enemy – sat precariously close to the side of the table’s edge. Beau’s violent bump sent it flying off the table in a wide arc where the force of gravity took control and bought it to land with sickening and annihilating precision on to the back of the marauding cockroach! A perfect bullseye! The insect was squashed as flat as a pancake, its innards a messy explosion across the polished floor. My intrepidly canine had saved the day.

magnificent model my mother created now that she is no longer able to oversee them.” Although there are very successful Jan Power Farmers’ Markets in the CBD, Manly and Mitchelton, it is New Farm that shines. Sammy puts that down to the fact of having very loyal regular stall holders, an efficient business model and only top-quality produce. As we wander through the crowds, Sammy introduces me to many of the vendors, each of whom have interesting back stories including international chefs turned growers, fashion designers now farming and TV chefs selling gourmet tastes. “Although this is an efficiently run business, everything still comes from the heart, and that’s what I want from my stall holders. I love those who take pride in what they grow and how they sell it.” Her genuine desire to revitalise her mother’s vision is obvious. “Now that mum has a ‘forgetful’ disease, I am her full-time carer and I knew I had to take over the markets.

Jan and Sammy Power

“It took me two years to learn the craft and now five years of running the markets as a professional business. “After 30 years in the media and radio, this was really a huge learning curve.” She explains that in the first six months after making changes she felt too scared to come to New Farm. “But my mum taught me how to be amazing. I remembered her words of advice, grabbed my courage and kept going. “One day in July 2015 I waltzed down the middle of the markets and screamed inside ‘It’s working!’ “And from then on I feel absolute pride that I am honouring my mother’s dream. I only hope others feel the love that Jan began all this with.” When the legendary foodie started to become frail, Sammy knew she needed to look after Jan and at first she admits it was tough. “I look after my mum every single day, working in the morning and

looking after her in the afternoon and night. “I am certainly no saint but I found that turning the responsibility of caring around, I now see it as an utter joy. “We have such fun eating beautifully presented delicious food, watching her favourite shows on TV and playing with our 25-year-old cats.” Never one to be complacent, a newly slim and health conscious Sammy sees a vibrant future for the New Farm Markets. “Keeping true to the core essence of the markets, I want to introduce a ‘WELLth and Happiness’ component with all sorts of foods and natural goods conducive to creating and maintaining vitality. “Watch this space.” And with that, the dynamo bounces off to mingle with those in her market village.

Sammy Power is a whirling dervish. She strides through her “village”, as she calls the Powerhouse Farmer’s Markets, saying hello to her vendors, enquiring after people’s health, commenting on their stall displays and encouraging visitors to enjoy themselves. She is a powerhouse herself, speaking rapidly and excitedly about the pride she feels in managing her mother Jan’s brainchild markets. Jan Power and Peta Hackworth created the Farmers’ Markets in Brisbane more than 25 years ago after running the successful concept at Marina Mirage. They first set up in James Street, establishing stalls in the old carpark before moving to the New Farm site in 2000 when Brisbane’s original Powerhouse was renovated as a public arts precinct. “And we are still here as one of Brisbane’s best marketplaces,” says Sammy proudly. “There is certainly a sense of responsibility to continue the

FOOD

From hammers to hospitality village food ANNABELLE CHAPPLE James Street café owner Michael Hatzifotis talks so passionately about food, both the cooking and eating of it, that it’s hard to imagine this hasn’t been his career all along. Just seven years ago Michael owned and operated one of Queensland’s largest Mitre 10 hardware stores. After 18 years of hard work, the Indooroopilly business was his retirement plan. In fact that’s exactly what he was preparing to do at the end of 2010 but Mother Nature made other plans for him. The floods of January 2011 affected his shop and in the process crushed a deal he’d brokered to sell the business. As his dreams of slower days were snatched away, Michael went to work

for his father before his passion for cooking and people lead him to open a café. In just two years “Cantinho” has developed a loyal following, churning out more than 500 coffees daily and serving up countless meals from a kitchen that’s run by his aunt Tina. On a humid, rainy afternoon I caught up with Michael at the shop to discover how he transitioned from hardware man to hospitality hero, why people call him the “Mayor of James Street” and to get his mother’s Greek lamb recipe for Easter.

Q

WAS IT DAUNTING OPENING CANTINHO WITH NO HOSPITALITY EXPERIENCE?

Being of Greek origin or heritage I’ve got a really big passion for cooking. The whole family gets involved. Everyone used to tell me, “Oh you should open a restaurant.” I always said, “One day, one day.” Then I thought, okay let’s start with a coffee shop.

Q

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE NEW FARM?

I’ve always liked this area. I call James Street the Rodeo Drive of Brisbane and with that clientele, they know what they want. If you give them a good product they will keep coming back to you and so far that formula

has proved right. Customers call me the unofficial mayor of James Street. Maybe it’s because I know what’s going on with them. I talk with them, I help out with community events around here. That’s how I ran my other business as well. It was getting to know the customers, having a chat with them and asking how they’re going.

Q

IS THAT YOUR SUCCESS FORMULA?

Yes, I think that attitude makes us stand out among our competitors. Our name “Cantinho” is actually Portuguese for cosy space. I’m Greek but that name really reflects where we are and how the place looks. We pride ourselves on the fact that everything’s made fresh daily on site, it’s got that “home” feel about it.

Q

EXPLAIN YOUR “SOUVLA DAY”.

I started it about four months after opening the café because customers were enjoying the Greek food we were doing, like spanakopita, moussaka, Greek soups in the winter and I thought, we should start doing a charcoal spit. They (the customers) want us to do it every week but we tease them, keep their mouths watering and do it the last Friday of every month. It’s so popular we’re adding almost 10kg to the barbecue

every month. It’s now up to 50-60kg of meat and then 30kg of octopus legs … that’s a lot of octopus.

Q

1.5kg 3 8 ¾ cup ½ cup to taste 1 packet

IT’S A DAY YOUR WHOLE FAMILY GETS INVOLVED IN?

Yes, on the day it’s me, my dad who’s 68 and if he’s not at school, my 17-year-old son. My mum does the octopus legs the whole day and night before. She boils them first: that’s one of the tricks of the trade. So she boils them with certain techniques and on the day we throw them straight on to the charcoal so they finish with that charcoal taste and the marinade that we put on top as well.

Q

SERVES 8

WHERE DOES THIS PROCESS COME FROM?

Straight from Greece, my mum’s from an island call Zakynthos and my dad’s from Crete. It’s traditionally how the octopus is cooked over there. The lamb is prepared in a similar way and marinated for 24 hours. That process actually tenderises the meat so when it comes off, it’s like fairy floss: that’s how tender it is and tasty at the same time. We serve it with a nice traditional Greek salad on toasted pita bread.

Michael Hatzifotis

boned lamb shoulder brown onions, diced garlic cloves, crushed olive oil dried oregano salt and pepper wooden skewers

ingredients

Michael’s Greek Lamb Souvla

method Slice lamb into fist-sized pieces and place in a large dish. Combine onions, garlic, oil, half the oregano, salt and pepper in a bowl or pulse ingredients in a food processor. Pour this marinade over lamb, being sure to coat every piece. Cover dish with cling film and place in fridge to marinate overnight. Before cooking, soak wooden skewers in water for at least 10 minutes. This will stop them from burning.

Prepare charcoal barbecue or preheat gas barbecue to low. Take meat out of fridge and thread onto skewers. Place skewers on heat and cook for 1-1½ hours. Baste the skewers every 15-20 minutes with the marinade left behind in the dish and sprinkle them with the remaining dried oregano. Add desired salt to the skewers 10 minutes before taking them off the grill.

ANNABELLE’S NOTES

A brilliant recipe for Easter Sunday. Just follow these three key commandments and your lamb will be soft as butter: lots of onions, lots of time (marinating) and go easy on the salt. To explain, the onions are vital in tenderising the lamb so make sure you coat the meat with the marinade and leave it at least overnight to work its magic. Adding salt to the lamb during the grilling process will make the meat tough, so heed the instructions and wait until the final 10 minutes to add more. Though this recipe was designed for the Greek-style charcoal spit roast, a very low barbecue will work but you might have to cut back on cooking time by 15-30 minutes. The lamb should be blushing pink inside when it’s served. Serve with Greek salad and warm pita bread.

Actors in a class of their own … now you can too

TIMOTHY SWANSTON

Restoration Zone launch

Local co-creators of Double Act Studio, Dianne Eden and Jennifer Flowers, are running a series of exciting and spirited acting and voice courses in May and June. Eden and Flowers said they were very excited at the upcoming courses in New Farm and Hamilton. “This isn’t just for people who want to be actors, it’s for everyone who wants to improve their communication skills all round,” Ms Eden said. “We encourage everyone to come along, from complete beginners, people who did drama at school to professionals who wish to upskill,” she said. “We’ve been putting our tentacles out there for the past two years and people have been really liking our classes and coming back and doing it again!” Ms Flowers said. The pair offers a lifetime of expertise, with Ms Eden fresh from her time at QUT as head of acting and Ms Flowers as a veteran of acting, directing and teaching. Double Act Studio references the two having worked together on and off for more than three decades. “We met each other when we were teenagers in Brisbane and we’ve got such respect for each other’s work,” Ms Eden said.

T he joy of community theatre is that it is a more relaxed environment to that of a professional company. - MR CARNEY

“New Farm Nash is quite well known in the theatre world but not so well known to a lot of New Farm-ites and locals,” Mr Carney said. “Why? Perhaps because we are in the inner city and people have a greater range of options and theatrical experiences open to us,” he said. “The joy of community theatre is that it is a more relaxed environment to that of a professional company.” Nash’s impressive resume of 130 productions demonstrates how much a powerhouse this group is, averaging five or six shows per year. “When you think that every production would have between eight

It’s been 10 years since Nash Theatre made its home in New Farm, which is a testament to the quality of community theatre on display and the dedication of all those involved. Phil Carney, president of New Farm Nash Theatre, said that it had flourished because of people with “theatre in their blood”. “It’s survived because of the dedication and devotion of people in the community who have a passion for theatre,” Mr Carney said. “The people who present community theatre usually have a fulltime job and want another outlet. “They’ve got much more than a few theatre bones in their body – it’s an absolute joy to be a part of.” Nash Theatre began in 2004 in Nash Street in Rosalie, moving over to New Farm a few years later. Mr Carney took the reins as president last year, having been a part of Nash for several years and on the community theatre scene for around 30 years.

and 12 people on stage, it’s a really healthy number of people getting involved,” Mr Carney said. “We’ve just finished our first production for 2017 which was a radio play. Now we’re in rehearsals for The Taming of the Shrew. “We tackle theatre from a range of genres, from the old through to the contemporary. “Up until very recently, NF Nash has relied upon its own fundraising by way of patronage. “It’s only been in the past two years we’ve applied for and received grants for new equipment and the like.” Audiences can purchase single

tickets, along with discounted season tickets for three, four or five shows. Mr Carney is keen to see Peninsula residents coming along to some of Nash’s four shows tabled for the year. “It would be great to see New Farm residents identify with and come to a New Farm Nash Theatre show,” he said. “Being involved is so much fun. It’s not all hard work because it’s a great environment. “It’s also a cheap night’s entertainment – with a bar on the night and the great space of the Merthyr Uniting Church.” For more information visit http://nashtheatre.com

New Farm Neighbourhood Centre worker Phil Neil will have his Australian Rules Football documentary It’s Just a Dream screened on NITV/SBS in mid-April. The film, which has been endorsed by the AFL, documents the Aspley Hornets’ rise in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) from bottom of the ladder to making a grand final – two seasons in a row. “I went (to the club) because my son was there as an under-19 and I was looking for a new doco to shoot,”

Phil said. “I saw this guy John who had come to the club and I thought … there could be a story in this guy.” That was the Hornet’s new coach, John Blair, who has coached Australian Rules for 19 years, including as assistant coach for the Brisbane Lions – and his teams have made the finals in 18 of them. Filmed over a two-year period, it’s a local story, documenting a pursuit of the ultimate sporting dream and all that comes with it.

Harmony Day last month was a highlight of the calendar at RSL Care Treetops in New Farm. This year, residential aged care staff from more than 20 different cultural backgrounds celebrated with a party featuring cultural food, colourful costumes and a strong sense of community.

Dianne Eden with Jennifer Flowers

“The business just happened one day in my office! “I think you get to a certain point in your career, where you can either back off and fade into the distance or you can be proactive,” Ms Flowers said. “Neither of us was ready to fade away so we’ve joined forces and create a niche for ourselves,” she said. The charismatic pair will be teaching primarily through Shakespeare’s works, with both having a passion for the Bard. “People feel daunted by Shakespeare but it’s such a vigorous, imaginative, strong spoken word to grapple with,” Ms Flowers said. “We start people with Shakespeare and before they know it, they’re speaking Shakespeare!” Ms Eden said. “People don’t realise how clever they are.” For more information on their courses visit www.doubleactstudio.com.au

Residential manager Cherry Le Ray said she was proud of how diverse and harmonious her team members were. “Harmony Day is not only special for the staff but our residents love today as well. “They enjoy seeing the staff in traditional dress and learning about different cultures and customs,” she said.

In the last month the Brisbane prestige market added a trophy to the Australian property mantle with a new record sale of $18million+ in Kangaroo Point. 1 Leopard Street a home that sits on the cliffs of Kangaroo Point attracted international interest last month as news of the sale filtered through news agencies. This property has also bought with it a wake of sales above $5million. Local New Farm agent Matt Lancashire made the huge sale and watching his social media pages you’d suggest there are more to come. But despite this movement in the top part of the market Brisbane is still representing exceptional value when compared to our southern neighbours, even with a significant population discount. Both Sydney and Melbourne are still enjoying strong interest with record sales are occurring every weekend. For those investors in Brisbane there is also positive news coming from the unit rental market. We have rented roughly 150 properties this year and I am thrilled to share that many of those have been inner city units. I genuinely wasn’t expecting to see the tenants continue to step up this year. January was a thumper and the following months have tracked in line with previously years. We are renting properties through all the price ranges from the entry level all the way up. The have rented a number over $1000p/w and the top end rental market is also performing well. The area that is of most concern to inner city property watchers is the financial lenders. It is still the area where home owners and buyers are exposed to unnecessary costs and restrictions. The difference between lenders can mean substantial variations in required deposits, the amount of money available and of course the interest rate. Any owner should be readdressing their home loan rates every 18months and buyers that aren’t shopping around could be discounting properties that could easily be in their price range. April will come with some challenges as school and public holidays will occur from start to finish. This usually sees many buyers take a break from Saturday opens. The sales that will occur will come from the experienced agents, they’re the ones that will be prepared to accommodate the needs of the buyer and will be able to navigate the mine fields to ensure sales are made.
