Vodafone commits to continue Traditional heartland in danger of mobile phone tower talks turning into the Valley of death MEMBER for Brisbane Teresa Gambaro has cautiously welcomed an undertaking by Vodafone to re-open stakeholder consultation about a controversial mobile phone tower proposal above 92-96 Merthyr Road in New Farm. Ms Gambaro wrote to Vodafone last month accusing the company of ignoring widespread community concerns about the location of the tower and the potential health implications of electromagnetic radiation emissions on students at the nearby Holy Spirit School. Vodafone has now committed to continuing the stakeholder consultation process to address community concerns and revealed it is now redesigning the proposed facility. Tim McPhail, Vodafone’s Head of Public Policy, has written to Ms Gambaro inviting her to convene a meeting of community group representatives to discuss the redesigned tower. Ms Gambaro said she remained concerned about whether a new consultation would be meaningful and not “orchestrated to simply create the appearance of listening to the community.” The next community meeting about the proposal is on 5 August.
Go Card top-up terminal a top result for commuters By Timothy Swanston RESIDENTS in the Teneriffe and Newstead area will now find it easier to add money to their go card with the creation of a top-up terminal at local newsagent, Gasworks News. Owner and Manager of Gasworks News, Chris Boon, said that the addition of the terminal was much-needed for this “booming” area. “There are a lot of Bank of Queensland staff here and they always ask for a go card top-up and we’ve never had it. Now, Grace Grace MP giving the green light we got it and it’ll be very convenient for to Gasworks News owners Chris and everyone,” Mr Boon said. Karen Boon for the go card terminal. The terminal is being added after State MP for Brisbane Central Grace Grace lobbied on behalf of the newsagent and local residents. “Many locals have told me there is a black spot for top up facilities here in Teneriffe and Newstead, making it unnecessarily difficult to use the public transport network,” Ms Grace said. “We are well on our way to seeing improved go card services for the residents of Teneriffe and Newstead.”The terminal is expected to be completed in coming weeks.

THE cameras rolled and the hyperbole flowed as Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk announced Echo Entertainment as the winner of the Queen’s Wharf redevelopment contest.
the comment By Mike O’Connor
“It will mark the biggest change to the tired George Street precinct since the construction of Parliament House in 1864 and the Parliamentary Annexe in 1979,” enthused the Premier. What she didn’t say was how much the good people of Queensland would be paid in return for handing over several hectares of prime riverfront real estate. Such minor detail, we have been told, will be revealed later, although there is no doubt it is a good and a great thing for the city. The danger inherent in this grand scheme, however, is that the city will be fractured. Shift your gaze, for a moment, from the glittering mirage of towers and bustling restaurants promised by
Echo to Fortitude Valley. Walk down Wickham Street where For Lease signs in empty, darkened shops and offices are the only window decoration. Walk from Fortitude Valley station along the scruffy corridor that leads into Wickham Street, and negotiate your way down the escalator that has been broken for months and is clogged with rubbish Take in the vacant shops in the Chinatown Mall and the faded, peeling facades of the buildings and you sense the seedy neglect. Newstead is booming, TeneriffeNew Farm continue to prosper and the George Street precinct is about to undergo a renaissance. This leaves the Valley, by-passed by the consumer dollar and destined to continue its downward spiral unless someone offers a financially viable vision for the future. Casinos and five star hotels are fine but when the For Lease sign goes up in the last shop standing in the Valley, the city will have lost part of its soul. mikeoconnor.com.au

villagenews Bloody Long Walk for important research NEW Farm couple Vanessa and Mark Rotolone are in training for The Bloody Long Walk on 23 August to raise funds for research into mitochondrial disease (Mito), a genetic disorder which last year claimed the life of their son Ari. The 35-kilometre walk starts at Moora Park, Shorncliffe, and then goes through Sandgate, Deagon, Boondall, Nudgee and Ascot before ending at Kuripla Park in South Brisbane. The Rotolones formed the Ari’s Angels team for the walk last year, when they raised more than $22,000, and hope people and corporate teams will support this year’s event to fund research on the disorder, for which there is no cure and few effective treatments. WORLD champion boxer Jarrod Fletcher and wife Krista are in the midst of the fight of their lives to raise awareness of a genetic condition their two-year-old daughter Milla was diagnosed with earlier this year. Milla has Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) or 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, which is a genetic syndrome, and is so named because it is the result of a missing piece of genetic material in Chromosome 22 in the “q11” region. Jarrod has issued a public invitation to anyone who is willing to go toe-to-toe with him in one of 22 rounds at a special exhibition fight at a special VCFS Awareness Day on Saturday, 29 August. The event, 22 rounds for 22q, will be held from 12 noon at Phoenix Ellite - Home of Fortitude Boxing Gym, 12-14 Kyabra St, Newstead. Krista says she is almost certain that Jarrod will be kind to anyone who is game enough to enter the ring and go up against her world champion husband in the name of charity. “Jarrod will fight 22 rounds against anyone will to step in the ring with him for 60 seconds and
Jarrod and daughter Milla. try to wear him down,” Krista said. Krista believes it is crucial for every child who is misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all not to receive muchneeded specialised treatments. “It could mean the missing piece to a desperate parent’s struggle to find the reason behind their child’s challenges,” she said. “Too many medical professionals, educators and parents have never heard of this syndrome yet it is now just as popular as Downs Syndrome, the research results are scary.” Support the event by coming dressed in Pink or Blue or both and bring your children, family and friends along for this great event with jumping castles, food and drinks available on the day. If you can help by donating money, prizes for raffles, or would like to register for the fight, contact Krista on 0419 736 195. Follow the event on facebook - @22roundsfor22q

Engine Room protest splutters to a halt after council edict By Timothy Swanston
THE historic Engine Room in Teneriffe will be turned into a restaurant after an agreement was signed between the Brisbane City Council and The Historic Engine Room Supporters Group last month. State MP for Brisbane Central, Grace Grace, said the proposed development was a “bad application”. “I don’t support what the council is aiming to have for that historic, lovely building and I would have loved to have seen more of the options around something that was more community focused,” she said. Ms Grace has concerns for the site if the business applies for a liquor license, which would need to gain State Government approval. “They’re going to give me a headache as far as whoever wins this café - whoever it may be - then applies for a liquor license,” she said. The historic engine room site, next to the newly-developed Sub-Mariners Heritage Trail, has been the source of conflict between the council and nearby residents for some years. Local resident and spokesperson for The Historic Engine Room
Supporters Group, Ken Hoy, says he “‘reluctantly” signed off on the modified agreement. “We negotiated, or tried to negotiate, it down to the ‘End of the Road’ type of cafe, which is what the council said that it would be like in 2013. The council flatly refused, they just said no to everything at a mediation meeting,” Mr Hoy said. “That meant that they were absolutely determined to put this into the hands of someone who are going to put a restaurant down there.” Mr Hoy says the group, made up of private citizens, ended up paying thousands of dollars in legal fees to fight the project. “We ended up paying to have included in the plans the things that should have been included there in the first place”, Mr Hoy says. “We had to fight them to get smells, noise and privacy issues attended to.” The council will be announcing the development in coming months and is expected to seek tenders for the project at that time.

Dear Editor I LIVE in an apartment in the Ansonia Woolstores on the corner of Beeston Street and Macquarie Street. For the past two nights there has been construction work taking place in Beeston Street. The work has commenced at around 7pm each night and has generally gone into the earlier hours of the following morning. The work involves cutting through concrete and digging. It is extremely loud and as you can imagine in a densely populated area makes it impossible to sleep. I have approached the workmen on site on two occasions as well as the council. They state that the work involves the NBN and that the reason they work at night is that the Brisbane City Council does not permit them to work during the day. If that is the case it is quite unacceptable. Why the work could not be undertaken during the day is unclear and requiring it to be undertaken at night is causing maximum disruption to the local residents. The workmen have told me that last night they received multiple complaints from residents in the street. As I write this email the workmen have recommenced digging so another night of no sleep is anticipated.
Cr Howard said in response…. COUNCIL provided temporary road closure approval for several streets in Teneriffe to facilitate utilities works, which was also approved by Queensland Police Service. The road closure approval did not include permission to conduct noisy night works. Following reports of noise from residents, Council visited the worksite last night to investigate if there has been breaches to the Environmental Protection Act, due to the noise level. This investigation is continuing and Council will issue the contractor with infringements if they have breached the Environmental Protection Act.

Coffee guru still full of beans after grind of tough early years
COUNCIL CONNECTIONS Draft Local Government Boundaries Released by ECQ
The Electoral Commission of Queensland has announced their draft suggestions for the new Central and Hamilton Ward boundaries. We think the independent Electoral Commission has done creditably well with their suggestion to bring all of Teneriffe, Newstead and Bowen Hills into Central Ward with the new boundary being Breakfast Creek. Vicki is sad it appears she will no longer represent the areas of Wilston, Windsor, Newmarket and Kelvin Grove and David is sad that he will lose the areas south of Breakfast Creek, but it seems everyone wants to live close to the action in the City so we imagine it was always the case that Central and Hamilton Wards would become smaller. It also seems sensible to bring the entertainment district of Caxton Street into Central Ward and also ensure that all of postcode 4000 is contained within the one Ward. You can view the ECQ’s draft boundary through www.ecq.qld.gov.au - the current boundaries remain in place until the day of the Council elections in March 2016.
Teneriffe Festival Suggestions
Brisbane City Council is pleased to continue to support the Teneriffe Festival through our Festivals Sponsorship. It was a great day and we want to thank the organisers and all the volunteers who made the event more special. COFFEE entrepreneur Phillip Di Bella has developed a healthy relationship with failure throughout his life and says that in business, you need to get comfortable with the worst possible thing that can happen to you and let nothing stop you from moving forward. Speaking at a recent Valley Chamber of Commerce lunch he said, “Marketing is the art of telling a story so compelling that people choose you,” he said. “Successful people are great story tellers and so the people within their business must be too.” Phillip believes his drive to change the way coffee was presented to drinkers is what has created such success for Di Bella. He worked seven days each week when he first started out, connecting with the end user, pounding the pavements and building the business during the week, and selling at the markets on weekends. His ideology was to talk to people and work with people to build the business from the outside out, not the outside in. His message for Valley Chamber members was that the most successful people form a habit of doing what others aren’t prepared to do. “Build resilience and be truly passionate about what you do – if you aren’t you won’t succeed,” he said. “Good communication, making sure you have the right systems and the right people are all things that will catapult you to success.” He established the business in 2002 using the passion for coffee developed at an early age and his enthusiasm for observing people to take customer service to a new level.

Phillip Di Bella. “We’re all different and what’s comfortable for me doesn’t mean it will be comfortable for you and the same goes for business,” Phillip said. “There is no magic formula.” Phillip’s advice to local businesspeople was to ‘earn their voice’ by working hard at relationships, giving out business cards, pounding the pavement and putting in the effort to present the business to potential customers. “Poor communication equals failure,” Phillip said. “Clarify your vision and don’t forget the work that needs to go into the back end.” “You also need a healthy dose of ‘productive paranoia’ – be paranoid that tomorrow we need to be better than today, and that you could be one step away from failure at any time.”
United Chamber meets demands
THE Valley, Teneriffe and Spring Hill Chambers of Commerce will amalgamate into one organisation from 1 August in a move aimed at delivering greater value to members. The expanded entity will retain the title of the Valley Chamber of Commerce (VCC) and be led by current president Robin Maini. Mr Maini told members the impetus behind the amalgamation had been the “significant growth and popularity of the chambers during 2015, and in the spirit of the ongoing efforts to continuously deliver greater value Robin Maini. to our members.” He said the VCC Board had spent considerable time discussing the future strategy of the chambers, including reviewing the results of a recent member survey. “This survey identified ‘member’s expectations’ amongst other key items as a high priority,” Mr Maini said. “We believe that creating one focused Chamber, which encompasses the large geographical area of Fortitude Valley, Brisbane CBD, Spring Hill, Teneriffe, New Farm, Newstead and Bowen Hills is necessary to ensure the culture and communication is of one consistent voice.”

Passionate advocate honoured by Rotary
I’M WHAT I call a ‘shy extrovert’. An oxymoron perhaps, but for me it describes my personality’s natural resting places; we’re complex creatures, after all.
LOCAL solicitor Will Sit has been honoured with a Pride of Workmanship award from the Rotary Club of New Farm. Mr Sit is the Solicitor and Operations Manager for Hodgson lawyers, which has an office on Brunswick Street. Principal Solicitor of Hodgson lawyers and past President of the New Farm Rotary Club, John O’Byrne, said Mr Sit was an example of why the Pride of Workmanship award was created. “He just exudes excitement and his passion and intense pace at times has brought me close to another heart attack, fortunately I have managed to keep up with him,” Mr O’Byrne said. Mr Sit has a background with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions while completing an Arts/Law degree at the University of Queensland. “Will now has a passion for ensuring justice is done and he sees the role lawyers play in the criminal justice system,” Mr O’Byrne said. Mr Sit said receiving the award was a surprise. “It’s good to have your efforts recognised. Access to justice is something I’m really passionate about and a lot of people don’t know that pro-bono legal advice services exist,” he said. Twice a year I travel to remote Fiji as a health volunteer and teach the locals about diet, exercise, avoidable disease and general wellness. We’re gearing up for our next trip and again I’ll push through the discomfort of public speaking because I passionately believe that it’s my duty, as an educated citizen of the world, to share my knowledge and I know I’m making a difference to this community. In the ‘first world’, what constitutes good lifestyle choices, provides us with options that affect our life expectancy. But what if you didn’t
know that too much sugar in your diet meant you may develop diabetes, or that it may reduce your life by 10 years, or your children’s lives? What if there were no PT’s, no treadmills, and no calorie counters? What if a pair of trainers cost a week and a half’s wages? And that’s if there were any to buy in the first place. This is the reality in the developing world and the reason why I’m appealing for your support, to please help me create a life-changing event for these people. Will you please donate your old trainers to me to take to the people of Savusavu? The larger the shoe size the better. If I can deliver my message of health to the community and give them a tool in which to implement change, then the impact of this is quantifiable. So far, the New Farm community and New Farm Chiropractic patient base has donated over 1500 bras to the women of Savusavu and I was able to witness something magical when delivering your generosity. Thank you for your past benevolence and I thank you in advance now. Please drop your old sports shoes to New Farm Chiropractic Clinic at Merthyr Village before 25 August, washed and dried, and give them a second life by improving someone else’s.

Hinkler visit to Bowen Hills gets record-setting aviatrice airborne
BERT HINKLER was the toast of the nation in February 1928 when he completed the first solo flight from England to Australia. He landed in Darwin, flew on to Bundaberg, then touched down at Ascot Racetrack, greeted by an estimated 12,000 spectators.
historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin Two days later, the national celebrity found himself at “Montana”, 15 Jordan Terrace, Bowen Hills, the beautiful home of his cousin, leather goods manufacturer Harry Bonney (1889-1965) and his wife Maude Rose “Lores” (1897-1994). The 20 or so guests at the Bonneys’ afternoon tea, including members of the airman’s family, were greeted with a “profusion of cream roses and zinnias [which] decorated the reception rooms, and tea was served at tables arranged with roses.” 31-year-old Mrs Bonney was reportedly more enthused by the aviator’s exploits than social chit-chat. Indeed, she managed to tee up a flight
with Hinkler the next day. The mission was to fly over the home of one of her friends at Yeerongpilly to deliver a bunch of home-grown roses. She deftly directed Hinkler across Brisbane to the right spot. As the friend windmilled her arms below, the plane swooped down, and Mrs Bonney released the floral cargo at the right moment. Back at the aerodrome, Hinkler complimented her on her navigation, something she never forgot. The following week, Mrs Bonney accompanied the hero’s family to a series of grand occasions at the new national capital. Hinkler met the Prime

New Farm celebrates our community THOUSANDS of locals and supporters visited New Farm State School for its much-loved biennial fete. True to its ‘celebrating our community’ theme, the fete showcased a diverse range of entertainment, food and stalls – with something for everyone. One of the many highlights was vibrant drumming band Hello Africa, which got toes tapping both far and wide. And of course, NFSS students put on some great performances – from the staple concert band to a Chinese choir. The auctions attracted strong interest. Adeptly called by Place New Farm’s Peter Burgin, the live auction generated some feisty bidding, with crowd favourites – including the David Hinchliffe painting of Annie Street and an Ibsen chair – all finding new homes. The raffle was the fete’s biggest fundraiser and was particularly lucky for one Kent Street resident, who won a weeklong trip to Queenstown. All fete stalls enjoyed solid success, including the Lucky Jars and Chocolate Drop stall (which moved 90 large blocks of chocolate, 40 chocolate bars and some 400 fun-size chocolates), the pie stall (which dished out 300 pies and rolls) and the massive kids’ treasure stall (which almost sold out on the day and then did so at a post-fete ‘jumble sale’)! The Best of New Farm competition judges were unanimous in choosing overall winner Judi Howard for her stunning shawl. P&C President Fiona Murcott said the day was a great success and would help the P&C continue to support the school with resources and infrastructure. “The raffle, auctions, stalls and rides were all very well supported, and the beautiful July weather was icing on the Best of New Farm cake,” she said. “Money raised will go towards such initiatives as installing the old Fortitude Valley State School playground that we purchased last year and air-conditioning the library. “We are extremely grateful to all of our fete supporters and sponsors – particularly our platinum sponsors Place New Farm, Councillor Vicki Howard, Fabulous Pilates and Yoga, and Ray White New Farm. “Thanks also to our fabulous fete convenor, Nyasha Mukandi and her excellent team – all members of which were volunteers and parents/carers at the school.”
Will Sit honoured.

No waning in growth of waxing specialists MOTHER-AND-DAUGHTER duo Jo-Anne Maree and Nadia Enkuzis are passionate about looking great and with over 25 years combined experience in the beauty industry, they know how to create and maintain the look you want in no time at all. When they opened The Brazilian Hut in 2006, they broke new ground by identifying a need for full body waxing and spray tanning in an environment dedicated to specialised services. Their signature treatments are Brazilians and brow waxing, and the salons have a reputation with their clients for being the fastest and best Brazilian waxers in Australia. “Our passion for providing perfected customer service and specialised waxing is what drives us,” Jo-Anne said. “Being in the industry a long time, I identified a gap in beauty therapy for specialised waxing services. Waxing needed to be out of a spa and beauty salon and to become a specialty service, which the consumer deserves.” Since opening the first salon in Mooloolaba in September 2006, the brand has grown to seven salons, with the new City and Teneriffe salons now open, joining the existing salons in Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Noosa Heads, Carindale, Wilston. The Teneriffe salon is located in a fantastic area at Double One Three on Commercial Road, with great access to carparking and conveniently located a few blocks from the heart of Teneriffe, James Street and Gas works. Jo-Anne said expert waxing and tanning is why The Brazilian Hut is a success. “We have been providing fast and professional

Advocates advise strata title owners INDIVIDUAL owners of strata titled properties will now have their interests served and protected with a new service in the strata industry. Wright + Lee will act for individual owner’s interests—in contrast to the traditional model of a committee, body corporate management firm, and body corporate as the collective of all owners in a strata property. Wright + Lee have cut-through the inherent problems that the current body corporate model holds. The body corporate industry has had this gap in service for decades, and with Wright + Lee open for business, this will be an issue of the past. With more than two million strata title properties across Australia, and projections saying the population is set to double, high-density living is a key strategy to manage urban growth. New dwelling approvals and builds have hit multi-decade highs on the back of recent low interest rates. TO understand Brisbane man and international businessman Stewart Wilms-Harvey, it further intrigues, yet defines the man, when I asked a good friend what it is that Stewart does.
villagepeople by Gary Balkin
Stewart’s friend related to me that, “These days he is basically your oldfashioned door-to-door salesman who travels the world flying first and business class, staying at the Hiltons then ‘does a Clark Kent’ and dons overalls to go sell his patented miracle tool that fits on a welder.” Since then I have met Stewart several times, and I was struck by his worldly knowledge and opinions, his freespeaking of his life experiences, of his other idiosyncrasies, of his love of motor bikes and his cars that he shares with others in some countries he visits, and of his constant quest, usually overseas, for the love of a good woman. He states more broadly, “I have met several B Grade actresses along the way, a couple of C Grade, and one Academy Award winner too.” His amazing tool is the Atmostool – check it out on YouTube. He has 2500 distributors in many countries, with just two manufacturing bases, in France and Australia. His sales since 1990 are in the multi-million dollar revenue bracket. Yet he still travels door-to-door, mainly industrial estates. “I am my own salesman, a one man band,” he states unequivocally. Those idiosyncrasies? Well, says he: “I do carry my own cutlery and linen serviette into an eatery, as I abhor plastic dining implements and thin serviettes; I bring a French coffee press and my own coffee on occasions. “My father was born in Germany, was a brilliant engineer, inventor and businessman. He may have influenced me here, as he would always carry a knife sharpener; he had a thing about blunt knives, and he would screw his grinder to the restaurant table, sparks would fly everywhere!” Stewart works just enough to maintain a certain lifestyle, where money is not his god. He has made and lost fortunes prior to this latter 25 years of his life. He was formerly a well-known successful Brisbane restaurateur, owning French restaurant Chevaliers at Milton, and Four Steps on Mary in Mary Street in the city. Born in Sydney of well-to-do parents, educated at Knox Grammar where he made the rugby First XV and was 16

a champion miler in the Sydney Associated Schools; he holidayed often with the family at their Gold Coast home on the Isle of Capri. It was from there that he discovered Brisbane. One night the family drove to Brisbane to dine at the Mark Twain theatre restaurant, and Stewart, 16, was most impressed, seeing his future in operating a good eatery. After schooldays, he worked in a pub and restaurant in London for a year, then returned to the Gold Coast where the then Captain’s Table was a top seafood spot in Cavill Avenue. He was dining there when he saw this beautiful waitress. He applied for a job next day with the owner Pete Smith, who saw something in this young man. Stewart’s request was that he work the same shift as Megan, his ‘vision’ of the night before. Soon Stewart was working with and living with “the love of his life”. “Those three years with Megan were my happiest,” he said. “I accepted an offer to work at a Chicago hotel. This was much to my mother’s disapproval. I worked at his hotel for a very interesting 12 months, and my stories abound. “Back in Sydney, Megan and I parted. It was at the restaurant Moncur that I met chef Michel Bonnet, who was later to make his name here in Queensland in 23 successive French restaurants. “I invited Michel to join me in Brisbane and we opened Chevaliers at Milton, in 1978. It was an instant hit. As it prospered, I married a Brisbane girl, bought Michel out, and later I sold to Robert Rubis and Anne Seiersen. I had a year off. “I then invested in a sandwich shop, The Good Loaf, on the corner of Queen and Edward Streets opposite Rowes Arcade. We delivered to industrial estates in two vans carrying big baskets full of sandwiches. “This expanded to The Good Loaf Catering Company, with five Honda Civic vans and a transit truck, doing corporate catering. We were doing 50 per cent sales from the shop, 30 per cent by vans and 20 per cent corporate. Then we noticed the next-door Coles personnel were watching us. “Coles copied us, expanded their food section, cut the price of sandwiches, we went broke, closed our doors, unable to pay the rent. I next lived on a farm outside Canberra, applying for over 100 jobs for middle-management, all unsuccessfully. ‘Failure can do that, under-estimating your own ability’, I was told by Deloittes on a visit to Sydney. So I searched for Senior Management jobs. “I was soon appointed National Manager of Unilever Food Service; then after 12 months I was head-hunted by the owner of another large catering business. I erred, because after my short time there, he told me the companies had lost over $1 billion in

Stewart Wilms-Harvey your old fashioned door-to-door salesman. recent years and so went under. “Next, my accountant went with me to Brisbane and signed a loan guarantee for a restaurant in Mary Street in the city, naming it Four Steps on Mary. “A beautiful, superb young Chef was manager of my all-girl-kitchen; her name was Gillian Hirst, a chef who became one of Queensland’s finest. “The restaurant was busy at lunch but there was no parking at night. The Eagle Street Pier was the hub at night, and once again we had to sell before going bust. “The talented Gillian Hirst was hired at Andy & Marcia Georges’ Il Centro and she brought her successful Sandcrab Lasagne recipe with her. “Then one day I was browsing through my brother’s garage and tool shed for some of my stuff and came across this discarded invention of our father. I was a bit of a handyman so figured it out. It was an amazing tool, and finding this relic of my father’s inventions changed my life forever. “I had 100 of these tools made, having to borrow the money to do so, packed my motorbike saddlebag with some, and set off to a Taringa shop to give my first sales pitch. “Nervously, I showed the shop owner how it worked – how, when connected to the welding tool, it sends a flame around the pipe! He asked how much? I pondered, then suggested $65, and I had made my first sale. He took three. “I had soon sold 18, and I thought: ‘I’ll do this for three months until I get a job.’ But sales continued, it paid for the rent and food, and I could see a future. Then I started riding longer distances to make sales. My first long trip on the road was around Australia with 50 tools in my saddlebag. “On that first trip around Australia, I rode my Kawasaki Zephyr via Roma, Charleville, Mt Isa, Darwin, would stay overnight and sell maybe three, and I ended up in Victoria at Lakes Entrance, where a man asked me how many I had left. I said 13. He said ‘Okay’! So I thought maybe I should start looking for a few buyers like him. “I later tried New Zealand, and that went okay, so I thought: ‘Why not the UK?’ So I saved up to go to London, naively without thinking it through. I forwarded some stock, arrived, rented a cottage in West Sussex, but it wasn’t long before I was back home, again
broke, with my tail between my legs! I saved again, re-thought my strategy and headed off again to the UK. “I sat at a table, studied a map of England, and decided to start at St David, Wales. I arrived on a Sunday evening, couldn’t find accommodation, and it was cold, wet and windy. “Finally I was offered a caravan overnight. I stayed for a week, I visited a village workshop in the morning; the owner played with it, and asked how much? I said ‘Fifty quid?’ He agreed. At that time, the currency of the pound and our dollar was 3:1 so the sale price was good. “I was learning that business is done differently everywhere. In America I would present myself as a humble mechanic, dressed accordingly; first to an owner-mechanic, next to a sales manager; next to a corporation, dressed in my best suit, with a call card announcing I was Company President, which impresses American executives. I have sold thousands in cold-calls to farmers, again adapting.” Stewart spends about four months at home each year, about eight months in the USA, France and the rest of Europe. His next goal is to succeed in Poland. It gets lonely sometimes in foreign countries. “Overseas, when I can, I tune in to 2CH Sydney to listen to the great Bob Rogers, at 92, still filling the airwaves in the 9am-1pm slot. Last Christmas, Bob asked listeners: ‘When was the last time you discussed Johnny O’Keefe (the Aussie rock legend)?’ I emailed from France: ‘… at Claude Carnell’s Playroom at Tallebudgera, also featuring Normie Rowe, Marcia Hines and Wendy Cook.’ That really excited Bob, and he sometimes phones me when he knows where I am overseas, at a pre-arranged time. The by-product of Stewart’s enterprise and self-discoveries is that he is in high demand as a guest speaker to corporate clients on his sales success stories – of selling the old-fashioned way. And he doesn’t use the word ‘motivation’ once. Stewart also is a well-followed blogger, which keeps him off his motorbike a bit; unless he’s out selling, or out for lunch, when his idiosyncrasies come out to play – his thick serviette, his good cutlery, and even his French press with coffee.

Teen’s street art livens up Bowen Hills
COOPER Brown, a 14-year-old from Holland Park, is one of eight south-east Queensland artists whose winning work will be showcased in Bowen Hills’ newest inner-city street, King Street. His work is entitled Strawberry Ice Cream and was created using a graffiti paint technique. The emerging street artist was very excited to have his artwork chosen. “I didn’t think my picture was good enough and I nearly didn’t enter, but I got the courage and I can’t believe the judges liked what I created,” he said. Lendlease’s Brisbane Showground’s Project Director, Andrew Hay said there was excitement about showcasing a variety of artists’ work that reflected the interpretation of the site’s past, present and future when the new street is completed.

Gravity defying poetry challenges and intrigues By Timothy Swanston POETRY, spoken word, film, performance, installations, slam, comedy, hip-hop, music, circus and more will be showcased at the 17th annual Queensland Poetry Festival (QPF) from 28-30 of August at The Judith Wright Centre. Creative Directors, Annie Te Whiu and David Stavanger, say this year’s festival, Language is a Virus, is about showing that poetry is “more than just words on a page”. “This is poetry that is willing to defy gravity. QPF 2015 will remind you what the moon is for and challenge the notion of what poetry is today,” they say. “It’s very much about dropping into the Centre, catching some art, catching some theatre, buying some great books, meeting with people and seeing and talking to poets to learn and be challenged throughout the whole weekend.” The festival features New Farm based author Krissy Kneen who will be presenting her Thomas Shapcott Award winning poetry collection Eating My Grandmother. Ms Kneen says she is also involved in a naked open mic night, where clothes are noted on the program as optional. “It’s something that’s going to be really challenging but I like challenging myself and others,” Ms Kneen says. “It’s always such a fantastic festival and it’ll be diverse to say the least,” Ms Burton said.

Diverse climate and extreme landscapes inspire creativity FIREWORKS Gallery’s director Michael Eather has curated the Weather Patterns exhibition with three contemporary artists, to reflect “the vagaries of weather and the extremities of our landscape”.
VillageArts by Kerry Gillett Rosella Namok from Cape York Queensland, Matthew Johnson from Melbourne, and Ronnie Tjampitjinpa from Western Desert Northern Territory, provide multiple viewpoints and perspectives on the diversity of the Australian climate. The abstract paintings being shown record the variables of nature using a vibrant palette. Rosella Namok and Ronnie Tjampitjinpa’s artworks are imbued with a deep traditional knowledge of weather patterns in their country, whilst Matthew Johnson explores the abstract phenomena of nature referencing the kinetic makeup of the atmosphere. Each artist creates an innovative and dynamic artwork that manipulates rain, light and atmosphere in an
abstract and contemporary expression. Namok is a very collectable artist who has earned an international reputation. Her work is represented in all major Australian public galleries and many international collections. Her visual language is a loose narrative of her social, physical, and natural environment. In the Stinging Rain series, she uses fluid colour fields to create a distinctive contemporary style. Her action painting technique applies, works, and strips back paint to create an abstraction of delicate layers of translucent colour and subtle textures. The rhythmic parallel lines slash into the deep red, blue, orange or purple horizontal surfaces making the moody narrative mesmerising. The beauty of these striking works is the sense of balance and the uncertainty. The viewer is unsure where the sky meets the water or if there is a distinction between them. Namok’s artworks have an organic feel, while Matthew Johnson’s paintings embrace a grid like, geometric pattern where mysterious, hovering orbs float over a sea of shimmering translucent colour. The inspiration behind a large body of his work is the natural environment and an investigation of light.

CHEF Marcus Turner has created a beautifully innovative menu for Lamberts at The Point Hotel, taking simple produce and turning it into spectacular epicurean dishes which would rival any hatted restaurant. The star of the entrees is a plate of perfectly seared scallops teamed with crispy pork belly, cauliflower, capers and raisins. A simple lamb shoulder has been transformed by setting it in a gorgeous date jus with a combination of sweet and tart tastes like pumpkin purée and dolmades. Dessert was an outstanding dish of delectable dark chocolate fondant, espresso cream and a beautiful fresh mint ice cream sandwich. FROM the heart of the Clare Valley in South Australia comes Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Grenache Shiraz Mataro. Crafted through careful grape selection and traditional winemaking, this wine sees 16 month’s maturing in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and is bottled unfiltered to fully enhance the wine’s character and appeal. Silky, textural, rich and vivacious, this wine is bursting with liquorice, dark cherry, mocha and chocolate flavours supported by a wonderful peppery spice. This is the perfect wine to cut through the winter chill with a warm bowl of chorizo and mushroom risotto or invest and hide away for the next 12-15 yrs. Gianni’s Kitchen LINGUINI to die for, pizza so divine you want the whole thing to yourself and wine that takes the dining experience to new heights. That’s how I would describe Gianni’s Kitchen. Gianni’s menu is extensive in true Italian style. You cannot get any more authentic with all of the pasta made fresh on-site and their deli stocked to the ceiling with delicious Italian goods. My recommendation to start with is the gorgeously golden crumbed Olive Fritte. Then try the Fiorentina in Piastra di Sale which is Gianni’s hero dish consisting of a 500g T-bone served and cooked on pink Himalayan salt slab. Gorgeous full bodied red from the Offida region in Italy matched with Gianni’s favourite pizza, followed by the steak is a meal you won’t soon forget. Keep an eye out for Gianni’s monthly ‘Trump Card - Calix Under the Stars’ dining series which takes you on a trip across Italy. Each month a dinner of the best wines and authentic cuisine from a particular Italian region is offered. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days makes it a very easy choice and a definitive must try. 5 Kyabra Street in Newstead, ph: 3056 1766.

Bloodhound Corner Bar and Kitchen
THE Bloodhound Corner Bar has arrived in Fortitude Valley and what you see when you walk in is just the tip of the plan business partner couples David and Noni Bajka and Alan and Sarah Simseker have for their second establishment. Their mission was to showcase the heritage-listed features of the building (first established in 1882 as Lennon’s Grocery Store) and serve up a great mix of local, national and international beers from an impressive copper font proffering 10 custom brews and more than 50 bottled beers from breweries across Australia. Open from noon till late daily, the Bloodhound’s menu features a choice of Latin-American inspired items by Peruvian head chef Gabriel Escalante-Gafau, from their first restaurant ‘Burrow’ in West End, centering on a selection of authentic Mexican soft corn tortilla tacos. Lunches are a specialty with three tacos for just $15. Top it off with a cheeky lunch-time brew and you’re good to go. Bloodhound Cornerbar has a wonderful function room out back and will unveil a stunning second story renovation later in the year. 454 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley, ph: 3162 6402.

The Teneriffe Festival is done and dusted for another year. This is a wonderful experience for our special suburb which comes alive on the first Saturday in July. As I walked around the event it ticked all the boxes with people enjoying the experience. It is also good to see local businesses get involved and I know it is a lot of work to set it up but with the large number of visitors we hope it is a rewarding experience.

His enthusiasm is second to none and he truly appreciates the magnitude of the decisions vendors are required to make when selling a property. no right turns A 90 year old couple was interviewed recently and asked what their secret to living a long life was. The interviewer waited for their response, probably expecting some words like “no smoking, a cup of olive oil a day or being in love” etc...Their answer was ‘no right turns’. Puzzled, the interviewer quizzed “What do you mean no right turns?” The couple went on to explain that they had heard that more ageing people die in car accidents than heart attacks. So when they were out driving, even if it took a little longer, they would make 3 left turns to go right. They played the safe game. So why share the story?!?! With the heat in the property market, the bbq conversation, fete conversation & even

Teneriffe festival chatter regularly turns to ‘how’s the market’ & ‘where are the bargains’. A share trader once told me if you get a hot tip for a stock, thank the person, go and have a shower and forget you ever heard it. Their message was, if you know nothing about the market, stay out of it!

Every week I see the educated and the ignorant lining up to buy properties. There are only 3 golden rules in property acquisition; know the market, make sure you can afford it and tenure. With the amount of properties advertised in the paper & on-line it’s never been easier to assess a property’s value. Loan brokers are now highly regulated and incentivised by the banks, so that means they’re free to use. They’ll tell you quickly what you can afford today & what you’ll need to factor in as rates get back above 6%. Finally time, if it was good enough to buy, then it’s probably too good to sell. Look at the people you know who make money from real estate. Very few do it by

trading, the professionals do, but most make it from buying & holding....then buying again! Play the safe game with my 3 left turn tips: 1. Meet a broker and assess your capacity (consider % increases) 2. Attend auctions, open houses, get a real estate portal subscription & read the paper 3. Plan to hold your property. Love at first sight ENTRANCED, captivated and spellbound. That’s how current owner Interior Designer Karen Whitcombe felt when she first stumbled upon the Woolstores at Teneriffe. Rich in history and character with their red brick facades and large sash windows designed to represent the commercial success of the Australian Wool Industry in the early 20th century, the area has fast become one of the most desired addresses and only 2.5km from the city centre. “It’s such a vibrant and iconic place to live with an incredible sense of history that’s so hard to find” said Karen who knew as soon as she walked in to her 3 bedroom apartment at Dakota that it was ‘the one’. The 160m2 third floor character apartment is now on the market due to a move overseas and will no doubt attract a lot of attention with its large separate entrance hall, original hardwood floors, timber columns, exposed red brick walls and north easterly aspect. “I love the sense of volume created by the 3.5m high ceilings and the wide open plan living area” explains Karen. “Being able to watch the river roll by, it has power and grace; a thousand colours and a
