Approval a disappointment THE mixed use development proposed at 76 Commercial Road has been approved by Brisbane City Council, disappointing many objectors, including the Teneriffe Progress Association president Ben Pritchard. “The development has been approved without a replacement for the Poinciana tree, which ‘failed’ on the site in January this year,” Mr Pritchard said. Developer George Group had made provisions to plant a replacement tree in Commercial Road, in place of an existing public car parking space. “Incredibly, council agreed to this highly unusual proposal in May 2013, but then backflipped and deleted the proposed tree from the final development approval just a few weeks later,” Mr Pritchard said. “Teneriffe has been hit with the double whammy of losing

the Poinciana tree and having it replaced by a development that exceeds the provisions of the council’s own City Plan and to which more than 30 local residents and the Teneriffe Progress Association raised serious objections,” Mr Pritchard said. “Council’s failure to even try to negotiate a reasonable outcome that compensates for the loss of the Poinciana tree represents an abdication of its responsibilities to deliver the proper planning of Teneriffe. “Everyone should be extremely disappointed by and dissatisfied with council’s litany of ineptitude regarding this matter.” The George Group declined to comment when contacted.

Organisers relax after biggest Teneriffe Festival ever

!! Go Sheep Go

MORE than 40,000 people flocked to this year’s Teneriffe Festival, the biggest in its history and organisers have declared it the most successful, with famous drop-ins including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan and a host of local celebrities. Festival director Richard Bodley said the event was the result of a lot of work put in by countless volunteers and it was their time, along with crucial donations made by sponsors that made it the shining success that it was. This year’s event utilised more space than in previous years, including setting up a stage and entertainment precinct down at Sir Manuel Hornibrook Park. Mr Bodley said this enabled greater crowd flow throughout the entire precinct. However, he conceded that overcrowding was an issue this year. “Every year we tweak it and make it better than the year before,” he said. “Look, it was crowded,” he said. “We just need to manage the activities within the precinct. We’re thinking next year, for instance, we might cut back on the number of stalls, for example. We had in excess, this year, of 100 market stalls. We had about another 30 or 40 farmers’ market stalls. We’re thinking maybe of looking at that area to make it a little bit easier for people to get around,” he said. The unveiling of the plaque

commemorating the sculpture, Gloria the Sheep was a well-attended event. Village News writer, local historian and partner of the original Gloria after whom the sheep is named, Gerard Benjamin, was on hand to witness the unveiling, along with local dignitaries. Mr Bodley said the social media component was a very successful component to the event. Social media has helped promote the event and also build social engagement. “We haven’t really embraced social media in any real way before this year, but since Kinetic Events have taken over, their commitment to social media has been invaluable.” Despite the enormous success organisers have consistently ruled out making it a twoday event. Street closures and community management would make the feat impossible, Mr Bodley said. For the moment, it’s a well-earned rest for the organisers while they take stock and assess where things worked and where things needed further tweaking. Mr Bodley said the festival took six months to organise and following the wrap-up meeting everyone would take a break and resume in December. “It’s getting more streamlined as the years go along, it’s becoming more streamlined because the structure is in place. So we’ve got all the ingredients, we know where we’re going each year,” he said.

New ferry plaque marks long-time river crossing TENERIFFE Ferry Terminal has a new historical plaque celebrating a river crossing which has been served by ferry from the 1850s.

historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin The plaque includes a photo of Jim Carnegie, who was one of the crossing’s longest-serving skippers. One of the earliest ferrymen was Brockman Davis, a Bulimba shipwright who was granted a three-year ferry licence in 1869, after which he turned his dexterity with wood to helping build the first Tingalpa State School in 1873. The great-grandfather of NFDHS member Wanda Davis, 47-yearold Brockman Davis tragically and ironically met his death on the Bulimba ferry. “It was a Saturday evening in February 1891. Half-way through the crossing on the steam punt, Brockman’s hat blew off and rolled into the water. The inquest was told that he tried to grab it but fell into the river. A lifebuoy was thrown to him, but he

didn’t reach it,” Wanda said. The best-known ferry was the paddle steamer Hetherington, which plied between Commercial Road and Oxford Street from 1925 to 1953, taking foot passengers, cars and sometimes horses. Robert and Norm Isdale, whose grandmother Margaret Page lived at 9 Helen Street, Newstead from around 1913, have vivid memories of the area, including crossings on the Hetherington. It made such an impression on Robert that in 1990, he published a monograph entitled, P.S. Hetherington – Brisbane’s Last SteamDriven Paddle Wheel Vehicular Ferry.

“I recorded a conversation with Erik Kampe, one of the Hetherington’s skippers,” Robert said. “Erik explained that Jim Carnegie, the captain from whom he took over,

villagehistory boiler fire. Of course, there were always those who advocated the replacement of the Bulimba ferry. One of the earliest proposals for a bridge across the river was in 1884. The Brisbane Courier reported (Nov 21, 1884) that a syndicate had been formed, “to undertake the construction of a high-level bridge from Teneriffe, at Mr Robert Wilson’s residence [Teneriffe House], to the opposite shore, at such a height as to allow the passage of the largest vessels that visit our port”.

The bridge idea was revived several times in intervening years. By May 1954, concern about increasing crossriver traffic prompted the council to think about investigating “the building of a high-level bridge or an under-river tunnel in the Hamilton or Bulimba reaches”. Let’s hope that the highlyappreciated efficiency of the City Cats and the singular charm of the older mono-hulled ferry, may obviate the need to ever think about bridging Teneriffe and Bulimba in the future!

Cloudland, queen of dance halls TOUTED as the coolest spot in town soon after its opening in August 1940, Cloudland became the much-loved social mecca for generations of Brisbane couples, before it was shamefully flattened in the early hours of November 7, 1982. Even if you didn’t meet your future spouse at Cloudland, you surely danced there, or even sat university exams there while the pacing supervisor made the floor spring underfoot. SOME homeless people will be sleeping a little bit warmer thanks to the donation of sleeping jackets by the Rotary Club of New Farm, which has donated 20 sleeping jackets. The sleeping jackets, a unique design that offers warmth and protection and was designed by the homeless, will be distributed throughout the area by three charitable organisations, the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, the 139 Club and Footprints. These coats cost $33 each, are hooded, waterproof and have internal pockets for the homeless who can flee with their personal belongings (such as their ID) if accosted. This is an initiative of the Order of Malta, a charity set up by nuns. The New Farm Neighbourhood Centre will distribute 10 coats, while the 139 Club will distribute five coats and five coats will be provided to Footprints for donation. GZone client Beverley with owner Georgina nutritional support, we also help people to improve their diet and eating habits for an overall lifestyle improvement,” explained Georgina. WBV has been used by top sporting bodies like the Australian Institute of Sport for many years which is why Georgina is urging people to try the concept. “WBV is not a fad and will be around for the long term. This is a genuine health and fitness tool that has dramatically improved the lives of so many people.” WBV works using a vibrating platform plate which stimulates the muscles without placing strain on the spine or joints. The trainer guides the participant through a series of exercises such as squats or push-ups. Whilst exercising, the vibration causes a chain reaction throughout the body. The workout is short and sweet but has packed a punch to all muscles, giving the body a major workout. At her boutique health, fitness and weight loss studio, Gravity Zone, Georgina’s priority is to deliver a very personalized and individual personal training program affordably to all people.

By Maddie Bates-Willis AN early Spring Garden Party is the perfect way to support the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day on August 23 and raise funds for the fight against cancer, spokesperson Katie Clift said. This year, the Cancer Council is promoting garden parties as a way that businesses can help raise funds, and by registering their garden party with the Cancer Council, each business can receive packs that will help with hosting duties. “Our host kits have information about how to fundraise, how to use donation boxes and information about Daffodil Day in general, to let everyone know how it works,” Ms Clift said. Suggestions in keeping with the garden party theme include decorating the workplace with garden gnomes and astroturf, offering cucumber sandwiches and enjoying a game of croquet. “A lot of corporates already have social clubs and events where they get together anyway. “So if they just incorporate a collection tin or go as far as decorating the office, they can participate,” Ms Clift said. Georgina Watson has been passionate about her craft ever since discovering it 10 years ago - and with very good reason. As a mother of five focused on her family’s health and fitness, she became fascinated by the concept known as Whole Body Vibration for its medical, therapeutic and health benefits. Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is globally recognised as a valuable tool for people of all ages and levels of fitness and is something Georgina swears by in her own studio, Gravity Zone, in the heart of New Farm. “This training is better than any other fitness program I’ve seen because it gives you an express workout in 20 minutes with the added bonus of a range of health benefits including weight loss,” Georgina said. Georgina knows her subject matter well, having worked as a personal trainer for more than 25 years and studying health science, exercise physiology and psychology for more than 10 years. She believes the WBV training is the most effective workout available because it provides core strengthening fitness and also offers muscular rehabilitation, cellulite reduction, collagen production, improved circulation and improved bone density – and many more positives. “Nothing else can give you the same type of results – you can see and feel the benefits to the body and through

kangaroopointfeature MORE than 150 years ago, Kangaroo Point was first home to the commercial operations of engineering, quarrying and shipbuilding. Today, the suburb is a monument to riverside lifestyle and residential beauty. This is a place which has become home to more than 7,000 Brisbane residents and with the benefit of New Farm and the Brisbane CBD just a stone’s throw away, it’s no wonder the area is experiencing renewed interest. Kangaroo Point is well known and recognised for its trademark cliffs – an unassuming and unofficial landmark of the city, as well as the southern end of the Story Bridge which spans the Brisbane River. Kangaroo Point is a suburb steeped in history and aboriginal heritage. In the convict era of the early 1800s, stone was quarried from the cliffs for use in building ‘the town’ across the river. Agricultural cultivation was the main income source for the 80 local residents by the 1850s, and during this time, the area acquired its own wharf, school and public house, ‘The Bush Inn’. By 1854, all available land had been sold, demonstrating that even for this period, Kangaroo Point was an attractive place. Now, more than 80% of residents in Kangaroo Point live in apartments, displaying a higher density of living than in any other part

of Brisbane. Perhaps it is the river lifestyle that attracts people to Kangaroo Point. Perhaps it is the proximity of the CBD. Whatever the magic formula is, it is wholeheartedly supported by the locals. Kangaroo Point property specialist, Soren Andersen, believes that there is much to appreciate from this aspect of the Brisbane River. “All that is to enjoy about Kangaroo Point is lurking just between New Farm and the city,” Soren said. “Locals like to consider their part of Brisbane as their own ‘little bit of paradise’ because that’s exactly what it is.” From the beautiful parklands enjoyed by families on the peninsula through to the cliffs of volcanic rock scaled by keen abseilers, Soren and his Ray White Real Estate colleagues believe Kangaroo Point is one of the best-kept residential secrets of the city. “Our team all live and work in Kangaroo Point and enjoy being part of the community,” Soren explained. Previously trading as Kangaroo Point Real Estate, owner Peter Willet began trading under the Ray White banner in 2008. He started with the Dockside precinct, which was one of the most prestige positions in Kangaroo Point. “We have the advantage of good quality development here and a variety of property servicing high end

The Story Bridge is the landmark that brings Kangaroo Point to the city. residential through to investment property customers, which means that everyone can enjoy the same lifestyle.” At southern end of the Story Bridge another Brisbane landmark can be found – The Story Bridge Hotel. Owner and licensee, Richard Deery, has dedicated his life to providing an incredible experience for his patrons and so his latest ambition is certain not to disappoint. Renovations have just begun on a new courtyard eatery which will result in a charming new conservatory style section of the hotel. Light and

bright, the addition to the original restaurant, ‘Deery’s’, which is also gaining a makeover, will have its own city outlook. The delight for diners will be in the focus on fresh local produce from the south-east Queensland corner. The Story Bridge Hotel bottle shop has been relocated just across the road adjacent to Ray White, freeing up space for additional restaurant space during the renovation process. The new, and yet to be named eatery, will open in late October, just in time for Melbourne Cup festivities.

IF life could be described as a bubble, some of us would be content to float along, being directed by the currents of air around us, while others would be blowing hard, trying to create the change in direction we want, controlling the float of our own little bubble.

villagepeople by Gary Balkin

James Donnelly is definitely in the second group, working hard to control the flight of his family’s bubble even against almost insurmountable odds. James was a foundation player of the Brisbane Broncos and as tough as they come, well-respected on the field for his determination. He was described by rugby league journalists as a fierce match competitor and a gentleman off the field. He is now a New Farm resident and businessman, heading up his own company called MAS – Modular Accommodation Solutions. MAS is involved in flat-top housing projects in the Surat basin as well as civil constructions of remote housing for the disabled and the indigenous in Papua New Guinea. James is truly a gentleman – he looks you in the eye, has a genuine smile, a firm handshake, talks with enthusiasm. James and his wife Trish and their family were happily bubbling along in 2007 when they began to realise that all was not right with their beautiful four-year-old daughter Lily. A stunning diagnosis “Lily was ailing. The doctors did not know what was wrong with our little girl and we thought at first it was autism. Then we began to think she was dying,” James says sadly.

“Lily was finally diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a progression disorder, a neuro-developmental problem. The bombshell news drew us all closer together,” he says of his tightknit family that includes Lily’s older siblings, Ashlee, 21, and Benjamin, 12. Lily, now 10, is a brave, delightful girl, and her parents focus on making every day a happy one for her. “I am always happy around Lily, and I take her for daily morning walks around the streets of New Farm,” he says. “Everyone we see on our morning walks says hello, and they all hail Lily with a big smile. “You never know when it’s your turn to take a hit in life. You can’t buy your way out when something so tough hits you. But you can’t stay down. You have to confront the problem and work on it with the best attitude you can muster.” Broncos experience James learnt much about personal hardship and constructive attitudes from his Brisbane Broncos football coach. When James, then from St George, western Queensland, played for Australian Schoolboys in 1984 his coach was Wayne Bennett. In 1989 Wayne signed James to the Brisbane Broncos. “That was the first time I had met Wayne, and when I was first made aware of his own family disability problems, especially of his son Justin. I admired his way of dealing with it, by embracing the fact,” James recalls. James played two seasons, and in 1991 the big prop forward played in the first winning semi-final match. James won two club awards in that winning match over Manly, but the team was then beaten by Canberra, the eventual premiers. Rett Syndrome James started out as a brickie’s labourer in Sydney and he describes the effects of Rett Syndrome like removing one brick at a time from a

James and Lily Donnelly beautifully structured house. There are about 300 children with Rett Syndrome in Australia. “To ensure Lily’s happiness, we found the task draining on our energies, and we were drifting towards burn-out, as sometimes Lily becomes very much sleep-deprived and inconsolable,” James says. “After all, we had a business to build and two other children to sustain.” Lily attends school at Red Hill Special School, and once a week, for just two hours, she attends the local Holy Spirit school. The principal, Nick Gallen, has been wonderful, James says. Wonderful wheels “We trialled a wheelchair called a Hippocampe for disabled children like Lily through the Red Hill Special School. We are getting our own Hippocampe for Lily soon from the Make a Wish Foundation. “Lily loves the beach, and these three, big wheelchair wheels can go into the ocean, over sand, everywhere,” James says. “Apart from the beach she loves driving in the car and videos. That’s her trifecta. “But we need carers with special skills. We knew that to get the best result for Rett Syndrome children, we had to secure a sustainable disability respite house, a place where our kids could go for respite a couple of days every four to six weeks, and give the

parents a break, as we knew that we had nowhere to go for a break ourselves. What we as parents need most is sleep.” Lobbying for Lily Trish started lobbying government, and Premier Campbell Newman recently delivered to the Rett Syndrome community, the Respite Plus Initiative, an ongoing commitment of $1 million annually. “We had bought a block of land at Boondall with our own money, spent more money on development approval for 25 townhouses, and then sold the site to a Brisbane developer,” James says. “With much of the proceeds from that sale, we are building a home which will be called Lily Grace Place in honour of Lily, to open by Christmas. This will be the first Rett Syndrome House in Australia and the initiative is the first of its kind in Australia. “Another advantage of having a Home is that it provides families with a sense of community, a meeting place, somewhere for information sharing. We wanted our community to have a presence and to gain control of how the services provided to us by government were carried out,” James says, with a satisfied smile. Certainly, you can’t control when life delivers a hit, but sometimes, if you work hard enough, you can control the flight of your own little bubble.

Come to the Ekka to meet the current and future swim champions. COMMERCIAL Swimming Club swimmer Christian Sprenger has claimed 100m breastroke gold at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona with a time of 58.79 seconds, narrowly beating South African Cameron Van Der Burgh by just 0.18 of a second. Sprenger’s gold is the only Australian gold at press time, putting Australia in second place behind the US. But the action is not all centred on Barcelona. Back home, Commercial Swimming Club will open its iconic dining room and canteen to thousands of Ekka-goers looking for food and somewhere to sit down during a busy Ekka visit. The Commercial Swimming Club has a tradition stretching back 98 years of welcoming Ekka fans into their dining hall. And this year, there’s every chance hungry customers will be served their roast and vegies or hot chips by a world champion. For more information visit http://www.commercial-swimming.org.au/

Sweating on election results?

Every small business owner in Australia should be praying desperately for an LNP victory at the upcoming election. Labor’s poor

villagebusiness by Alan Blair track record and recent policy announcements that are clearly detrimental to small businesses – capping self-education expenses and eliminating salary packaging benefits for business vehicles to name two – mean small business can’t expect Labor to do anything for them if they’re returned to office. On the other hand, the Coalition has made promises to take Australia’s 2 million small businesses and their 7 million employees seriously if they’re handed government. It just makes sense that, no matter your party affiliation, it would be ballot box suicide take 60% of the nation’s workforce for granted. You’d think so at least. But other than the typical post-election boost in consumer and business confidence, business owners should know that only one thing is certain – who wins this election will make very little difference to whether or not your business succeeds or fails. A recent survey of 1,096 small businesses found that their key demands from the government are reduced costs of doing business, reduced tax burdens (financial and

compliance), reduced red tape and reformed workplace relations regulations. Any political party capable of delivering on even one of these concerns would be doing well. But there are bigger issues facing small business today, and I think the survey completely misses the point. Because no matter who wins the election, little if anything is likely to be done to considerably reduce government burdens on small businesses. If business owners want something to be concerned about, they would be better off worrying about committing the three cardinal sins that I see repeatedly amongst SMEs. The first sin is not having any established systems in your business. With good systems, your business can overcome a lot of red tape and government burdens. Without them, even the most basic functions can become difficult to keep track of. The second sin is lack of focus. Too many business owners don’t have a clear idea of exactly what they want to achieve and how they’re going to achieve it. Flying by the seat of your pants or taking the “shotgun” approach to business development does more damage than any political party ever could. The third sin is believing that asking for help or advice of any kind is the equivalent of admitting failure. In fact, the most valuable assets you’ll ever have as a business owner are good advice and support. My advice to you is vote LNP. And then take a cold, hard look at yourself, your business and what you’re doing (or not doing) to make the next three years successful regardless of who’s occupying the Lodge.

TwoCents grows into big business

THE Sunshine Coast is the latest office to become part of the TwoCents Group following TwoCents’ merger with Bloom PR & Marketing. TwoCents merged with Bloom earlier this year to offer a full-service marketing and communications agency, based in Brisbane and with offices in Sydney and the Sunshine Coast, as well as affiliations with Perth and Toowoomba agencies. TwoCents was founded by director Simon Dell in 2009 and clients include Queensland Racing, Xennox Diamonds, Queensland Meals on Wheels, Con-X-Ion Airport Transfers and First Class Accounts. Bloom PR & Marketing was established by Samantha Brooks in 2011 and brings a client base to TwoCents that includes Icon Film Distribution, Hopscotch Films, Australian Events, the League of Extraordinary Women, Queensland Meals on Wheels, and Brisbane Youth Service. Ms Brooks joined TwoCents as a director, shareholder and head of the PR division. “I’ve known Sam for many years and she’s been a fantastic addition to our agency,” Mr Dell said. “We were delighted she agreed to bring Bloom and her broad PR and marketing knowledge to the TwoCents brand.” Mr Dell says the goal is to develop a reputable national marketing company that can be trusted by businesses for advice and support. On the banks of the creek an old bushie reveals a secret

Erindale Station Summer 1975 Removing from the pocket of his jeans a battered tin of Log Cabin tobacco and Tally-Ho rolling papers, the

fingers slowly work the tobacco into a cylindrical shape. Satisfied, he removes the paper from his lip. Folding it into a trough, he then carefully places the tobacco onto it and begins rolling it back and forth until the recognisable shape of a cigarette is realised. Taking a match, the old man carefully pushes any loose tobacco threads that hang free, back into the body of the cigarette. Scrutinising the rollie for any imperfections and finding none, he then pops it, holus bolus, into his mouth.

tonyjonesdiary by Tony Jones

old man hunkers down with the agility of a true bushman. The Cuban heels of his riding boots sink into the soft sandy soil of the creek bank. Resting his elbows on his knees he places a single cigarette paper on his moistened bottom lip and then delicately teases long strands of tobacco from the tin. In a cupped palm the long brown

I smile, for I realise I had been waiting expectantly during the whole elaborate ceremony for this part of the ritual. As children we would cry out in surprised delight, ‘’Why did you do that, Poppy?”. “Because it tastes good,” he would always answer. But later, as adults, we understood it helped moisten the paper and stop it from burning too quickly. And so we sit in companionable silence on the creek bank, my grandfather and I, as he smokes his rollie and I allow my thoughts,

unfettered, to drift back to the halcyon days of childhood. My sisters, cousins and I had so enjoyed this creek with its pools of spring water and the cooling, though at times slightly menacing, shadows. “See that big old man gum across there,” says my grandfather, pointing to a giant river gum standing much taller than its surrounding companions. “I reckon it would be more than 200 years old, that tree. It was already a big-un’ when I was all but knee-high to a grasshopper.” I recognise the tree at once. It was the majestic river gum the family used as a reference point, a place to meet or picnic under. It was also the same spot my cousin Phoebe swears she saw a ghost. I never felt quite the same about the place after that but unlike Phoebe, I kept coming down to the creek. Phoebe never set foot there ever again. But there was another member of the family who exhibited a curious reluctance to be in close proximity to that old gum tree; an observation given voice to me by my cousin, the otherworldly yet perceptive Phoebe. It was indeed she who drew my attention to the family member’s particular avoidance of the gum tree. “Pop, I seem to recall you always gave that tree a wide berth. Whenever we all came down to the creek, you

would encourage us to move further along the bank or set up over here on the opposite side. Why’d you do that?”. The old man says nothing. I can see his eyes, piercing through the veil of cigarette smoke. My grandfather holds fast my gaze for what seems an age but it is he who first breaks free, his eyes slide away, almost guiltily. I feel an odd compulsion to apologise, but for what? I was just speaking the truth. I hear him draw deeply on the cigarette and then after a moment the sound of exhalation and suddenly I’m engulfed by the acrid though faintly sweet smell of tobacco. The butt of the spent cigarette he buries in the sand and then I hear him say softly, “You’re right, boy. That old tree and I share a terrible secret. A secret I’ve never told another soul, not even your grandmother.” Intrigued, I knew to keep silent. To bombard the old man with shrill and intrusive questions would only serve to have him withdraw into total and enigmatic silence. I wait patiently as the old man painstakingly rolls another cigarette. A delaying tactic I suspect, to allow time for him to slowly marshal old memories to the fore. After clearing his throat and spitting a speck of tobacco to the ground he says, “It was the summer of 1910. I was a young lad the same age as the century...”.

IF you’re looking for a new challenge, look no further. Conquer new horizons and travel overseas with The 50+ Travel Club NOW is the best time of your life to travel – kids off your hands and their inheritance to spend! You’ve worked hard and now it’s your time to indulge yourself and enjoy the fun of carefree travel. Sara Birtwhistle has spent 20 years in the travel industry and is using her experience and knowledge to plan dream holidays for the 50-plus travellers. “There are travellers who perhaps haven’t considered group travel and think it’s not for them. But this is something quite different. It’s a small, intimate group of people who come together to explore a new country and culture. In this context, group travel is quite enriching,” Sara says. Unlike the typical group travel experience which can be a big group, a little bit anonymous, Sara’s groups are small, maximum of 26 people, and her itineraries are the perfect balance of group activities and free time, leaving you to explore and engage with the people and the culture at your own pace. “Our clients really love to get among the people and connect,” she says. “When you go on a safari in Africa you don’t want to go into a safari park with hundreds of others vying for the same game viewing; you want to get up close and see the wildlife,” she says.

“What I offer is really the personal touch,” she said. “I can tailor a trip for anyone and I know all the best places to stay. I can add the polish to really make your trip a fun adventure,” she says. “Before every group trip we have a pre-departure dinner. We organise that at The Brisbane Club where we have a private room and we go through the documentation and have a drink and chat. It’s really a fun night. It’s a way to ensure that when we get on the plane in Brisbane we all know each other,” she says. “I really want to help people have memorable holidays. Right now we’ve just released our Canada and Alaska tour for 2014. It’s an amazing holiday,” she said. “We’re going to be there at the right time to see the bears hunting salmon as they swim upstream to spawn,” she said. “And I’ll be there to guide the group every step of the way,” she said. “We only do this trip once a year and we’ve designed this departure to coincide with the best wildlife viewing times and to avoid the peak summer tourism season,” she said. Sara’s guests will receive their own mini iPad or similar tablet to keep, loaded with the travel itinerary and other vital holiday information. “We like to add that little bit extra. It’s what differentiates us from

Sara Birtwhistle has 20 years’ experience in the travel industry. the rest,” she said. “Group touring can give travellers insights into the country they’re visiting that they might not necessarily get when they travel by themselves,” she said. “I like to really plan a holiday that is focused on that person. I take my time and create an experience that is all about the person,” she said. “We keep our groups small, maximum 26 people, and it creates a really friendly travel experience,” she

said. “We do things like private dinner and wine tastings in a boutique hotel that just re-opened in Vancouver,” she said. “Lots of fun experiences that come from having great contacts and lots of experience in the industry,” she said. “But there’s plenty of time to enjoy time away from the group. This is your experience and you should have fun!” For more information visit: www.50plustravelclub.com.au

Russell Morris proves he is the real thing which is pretty good,” he said. Morris, a self-proclaimed fan of music festivals, said the reason he’d never done many festivals before was because he was never invited. “I was like a comfortable pair of slippers. People would say, ‘I really love those slippers and they’re really nice but I’ve worn them and I’m going to buy a new pair’,” he said. “Consequently I never got near the festivals until Sharkmouth came out, which absolutely turned everything on a sixpence and I started to get everything under the sun then. “The festival organisers realised everything was working for me again and so away it went. It was great!” He said it was a relief to be doing new music now, after so many decades of relying on the same few hits from early in his career. “Yeah, we still do the older stuff but the good part about it is now it feels a bit validated because people are yelling out for songs off Sharkmouth. You don’t feel like you’re living off what you did 30 years ago. “So you feel like you’ve got something current and you’re still proud of what you did before. It’s a good feeling.” The Gympie Music Muster, August 22 – 25. Visit www.muster.com.au for more information.

Australian music legend Russell Morris is performing at this year’s Gympie Music Muster.

GIVEAWAY

By Felicity Moore THE Gympie Music Muster is squaring up for its 31st event and this year among the cavalcade of stars will be Russell Morris, one of Australian music’s legends, playing an all new style of music with a new hit album to boot. Morris, best known for his 1969 hit The Real Thing, is riding high with his new Blues album, Sharkmouth and is looking forward to playing at Gympie. “I’ve done the Gympie Muster once before with Brian Cadd and this is my second time and I absolutely loved it when I did it last time,” he said. “It was just sensational. Everything ran like clockwork and it was such a pleasure to do and the band is really looking forward to doing it too.” The Muster is once again running its Blues and Roots tent, where Morris will be playing hits off his new album, which is the first time in his career he has tackled Blues music. “It came out of left field. No one expected me to do a Blues album, nobody expected me to do a Blues album about Australian history,” he said. “Certain community stations and the ABC absolutely embraced it and then JB HiFi and Sanity and these record stores really got behind it and they started playing it in-store and it just took off like wildfire. It’s on its way to platinum now

Buddhists to explore inner-voice impacts There will be a zen-like focus on the theme Inner Peace, Outer Action during the 7th Annual Australian Association of Buddhist Counsellors and Psychotherapists Conference at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on August 24-25. Conference spokeswoman Dr Katie McLachlan said delegates would explore how “our inner conversation impacts on ethics and actions and how spirituality impacts the well-being of individuals and the community”. Speakers would include the Venerable Robina Courtin, Dr Stephanie Dowrick, Dr Noritta Morseu-Diop PhD, Dr Eng-Kong Tan, and Ms Renate Ogilvie. The association integrated the 2000-year-old Buddhist philosophy of the mind with a contemporary Western psychotherapeutic practice, Dr McLachlan said.

villagenews More cameras to focus on crime

SEVEN new CCTV cameras will be installed in Fortitude Valley as part of the State Government’s $1.5 million plan to tackle crime hot spots. The Government will roll out 64 new cameras in total, with seven allocated for the Valley and others slated to go into the CBD. More than 20 will be installed on the Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Southport and Coolangatta. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli said the cameras were being installed as part of a strategy to reduce assaults, vandalism and hoodlum activity. “The only people that should be worried are those who set out to assault or intimidate others or damage public property that we all end up paying for,” he said.

Toilet humour is the funniest art

By Grace Winzar WHY is there a multi-story pit toilet in the front courtyard of the Institute of Modern Art? Is it some sort of joke? Yes, according to Brisbane-based artist Joseph Briekers. That’s exactly what it is. Breikers is one of four artists chosen to be part of this year’s Fresh Cut exhibition, which is the IMA’s annual selection of emerging Queensland artists. Thanks to Creative Sparks (a grant from Brisbane City Council and Arts Queensland) each artist participating in Fresh Cut receives $5000 to help them realise their projects. Breikers’ project is a toilet. The structure includes three separate non-functional long-drop toilets stacked on top of each other. Pedestrians coming from Brunswick Street will experience this unexpected, large and somewhat confrontational art piece. Breikers is interested in the use of humour as a tool to critically engage systems of power and hierarchy, and challenge presupposed knowledge. He uses toilet humour -literally- in an attempt to encourage an immediate response, one that isn’t grounded in intellect, but rather, emotive and instinctual. Joseph Breikers completed a Masters in Fine Art (Research) at the Queensland University of Technology

IMA artist Joseph Breikers in 2012 and was awarded an Arts Queensland Career Development Grant in 2011, to undertake a residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. Breikers’ work will be presented from 3 August – 21 September, alongside work by Caitlin Franzmann. The second installation of Fresh Cut will showcase work by Anita Holtsclaw and Ruth McConchie, from December 7 2013 until March 29, 2014.

Music mavens reveal a passion for local fashion CULT indie/pop band Sheppard is blasting its way up the music charts and into mainstream fame with their first single, Let Me Down Easy, which has sold more than 70,000 copies and gone platinum. The Brisbane band, formed in 2009 by three siblings and their three friends, headlined last month at the Teneriffe Festival and the group’s bright, folksy sound was a hit. Sheppard is gaining traction with regular radio air time and national TV appearances, and critics are predicting a big future for these likeable locals. Sisters Amy and Emma, along with brother George Sheppard, live just off James Street in Fortitude Valley and love the area’s fashion boutiques, revealing they are well versed in all the local designers. Amy and Emma sat down for a styling session and chat with Village News. You must spend a lot of time away from home whilst touring, how do you co-ordinate your looks and what is your packing style? Amy: It’s hard to fit everything in one suitcase! The Sheppard family never packs lightly whether it is a weekend away or a month-long tour! Emma and I share all of our clothes which gives us a lot of choice when traveling. We also

share a “stage outfits” wardrobe, so we pack a few statement pieces from that and then we pack a whole heap of basics. Our look is quite eclectic so it’s not too much of a concern to coordinate everyone! The hardest part is packing shoes! I have a pair of Tom Gun boots which are my “go to” stage shoes. Who is your favorite Australian designer? Emma: It’s so hard to choose one favourite! We love the up-and-coming fashion designers: Farron by Chantel Cox, Soot by Edwina Sinclair and Her Pony. We love pieces which are unique, and emerging designers always have the most beautiful clothing. Do you like to follow fashion trends or do you prefer to adapt fashion to suit your personality/mood? Amy: We are always adapting pieces to suit our own style. Emma and I love clothes which are a bit wacky and out of the norm. It makes life a bit interesting! We live just off James St so we are in love with all the shopping around the area. We don’t always spend hundreds of dollars on clothing ‘though. We love to find emerging designers and we wear a lot of ‘90s vintage. Summer or winter and why? Emma: Summer for sure! We are all

Shoes and accessories the band’s own Venue: Mirra Private Dining and Events, 86 Bridge St, Fortitude Valley about bright colours and it’s pretty hard to dance around in winter jackets! Amy: I think our music is very summery too - it’s like a big beach party. I usually opt to freeze than wear layers and layers or dark clothing. If you were given the choice to go back in time, which period would best suit your style and why? Emma: It’s a constant battle between the ‘60s and ‘90s! We love all the neon colours and pop punk from the ‘90s, however we incorporate the class and glamour from the ‘60s. Our makeup,

hair and accessories are very ‘60s and our statement clothes are more based around ‘80s/’90s. You have received an invitation to an evening cocktail event here in Brisbane. What is your go-to fashion boutique that never lets you down? Amy: Haut Boheme in Winn Lane! They always have the most unique dresses in there. It’s very beachy but still very classy. I really love all their accessories too, shell collars and ankle cuffs, love! If not there, Easton Pearson always has the most wonderful pieces.

New Farm love affair for Silverstone Developments Silverstone Developments’ love affair with the New Farm / Teneriffe area has stepped up a notch, with the team moving in to their newly developed offices in their prestigious 1/24 Macquarie Street development and eyeing off another potential development in the area. Silverstone, an emerging boutique, privately owned Brisbane property development company, moved in to the ground floor of 24 Macquarie Street in the Australian Estates Woolstores after out-growing their previous Newstead office space. “We quickly outgrew our initial offices, having grown from a team of two in July last year to a team of 9 just twelve months later, and couldn’t be more thrilled with our new offices,” said Silverstone Developments General Manager, Jim Watson. “The team at Blackwatch Projects did a fantastic job with the build and the finishes. It is a contemporary, sleek new space and makes the building a really interesting mix of old and new,” he said. “We moved in mid-July and are well and truly settled in now. The cafe is doing a roaring trade and most of the other tenants are happily settled in to the new space as well. “The new development also gave us the opportunity to work with the Teneriffe Progress Association, who

have some fantastic ideas about how to preserve the character, amenity and streetscape of Teneriffe and promote the proper town planning of the precinct. In fact, we are hosting their next meeting in our new offices and are looking forward to showing off our new boardroom.” The love affair doesn’t end there. “We have identified another potential development opportunity in New Farm and are pursuing it vigorously. This area has a wonderful sense of history, as well as being one of the most energetic, forward-looking areas in Brisbane. “I fell under its spell when I moved here with my family in 2000 and I am always keen to promote the area and the wonderful people and businesses who live here. “So when I get to mix business with pleasure, by looking at exciting developments in the local area, that could potentially turn an eye-sore and wasted space in to a vibrant part of the community, we jump at it. “Nothing is set in stone yet so I can’t say too much but when we hopefully lock it in, I will be shouting it from the roof tops. “It really is a very exciting time. We have a great and growing team, fantastic new offices, and exciting deals in the pipeline - the future looks bright.”

GROW Consulting and Newstead Realty have joined forces to create a unique, truly fullservice business that helps clients grow their wealth through property investment, finance management, property management and property sales. Director Ayda Shabanzadeh says the acquisition has created a perfect synergy, with the two businesses bringing complementary components to the table that mean clients benefit from additional expertise and services. “Grow Consulting and Newstead Realty will continue to operate as their own entities but they are now part of the same organisation, Grow Consulting Group,” Ayda explains. “We are now able to bring our values of exacting, high-quality service to a new branch of the business with the addition of Newstead Realty,” she says. “For us, it’s all about the person. We deliver high-quality service for our clients with that personal touch,” she says. “We have expertise, energy and passion.” Grow Consulting helps people find just the right investment property and acts on behalf of the buyer throughout the purchase process. Grow also handles finance brokering and has relationships with more than 25 lenders. In addition, Grow can offer financial planning solutions to clients who want to build their wealth through strategic investing. Grow previously offered property management services also, however, since the merger, the property management side of it

fits perfectly within Newstead Realty’s scope of business. Ayda says as a one-stop shop Grow Consulting Group is able to support clients throughout every step of the property purchase process, including right up to the time they decide to sell. “So now when they want to sell the property, rather than us going out and trying to find an agent, we have agents here who operate to the same high standards, with the same values as us. We are able to continue offering that extraordinary level of service all the way through,” she says. Newstead Realty has a well-established level of trust in the community, through its longevity and excellent reputation built up over time, and the real estate agency is now able to bring that trust to this merger. After the sale completed, its principal staff remained, ensuring that level of expertise continues in the new venture and guaranteeing stability and ongoing support. There is no doubt that acquiring Newstead Realty is a match made in heaven and the new, expanded business will offer a full suite of services that will perfectly complement each other. Clients’ needs will be met to the highest standards and to their complete satisfaction when they engage Grow Consulting Group and Newstead Realty. WHO says women can’t do it all? New Farm Place estate agent Alex Rutherford is successfully combining new motherhood with selling properties and is loving it. “I actually worked all the way through my pregnancy. I didn’t get morning sickness and I didn’t start showing until I was five and a half months pregnant,” she said. Alex made the most of an enjoyable pregnancy and continued to work with her clients. “I worked right up until the evening before the caesarean, had little Oliver, and then was back on the phone in the afternoon negotiating a sale of a house. My son will be well-versed in real estate in no time,” she said. Unfortunately, her pregnancy impacted her sales’ abilities in a way she didn’t expect. “I thought that everyone would be really accepting but

Combining motherhood and real estate due to being pregnant I actually missed out on selling a few properties because people thought I wouldn’t come back to the industry which was quite disappointing,” she said. “In the last two months of my pregnancy, I actually ran out of properties to sell. The ones I previously listed had sold.” The flexibility and support from a family friendly company like Place Estate Agents means Alex will not need to take maternity leave and can work, even with a newborn infant to care for. “The advantage real estate offers professional women, is that you can balance listing, selling and supporting your clients and having a family because you can pick your hours.”

Glen Boyle – Summerhouse chef to top sales agent NEW Farm identity and former Summerhouse chef Glen Boyle has left his professional cooking days behind and has fixed his sights on a new horizon - helping people through the big decision of buying and selling property. Glen’s career has scaled dizzying heights, including winning the prestigious gong of Australia’s best café for his New Farm icon Summerhouse. In life, highs are invariably followed by lows, and the blaze that razed Glen’s Summerhouse was certainly a deep low. In the following period, he was inundated with supporters, including thousands of locals who signed a petition in a desperate bid to save the Summerhouse. “Thank you to all the folks who supported me through the upheaval. It was incredibly heartwarming to have been embraced by the local community and I can’t thank you all enough for that,” Glen said. He received countless messages of support from the many, many patrons who had dined at the Summerhouse. As is always the case with determined, successful people, he made up his mind to put the past behind him and look forward, with a view to reinventing his career – a fresh start. Glen has joined the team at The Professionals New Farm and is busy with his new goals now. If you need an agent who is as passionate about the area as you, and provides an exemplary service, including someone who pays attention to detail and that personal touch, you’ll be very happy you called Glen.
