School to send off popular principal in style POPULAR Holy Spirit School Principal Nick Gallen will leave the school at the end of this term after seven years to take up a new role at St Bernardine’s, Regents Park. Chair of the Holy Spirit School (HSS) Board, David Leach, said while the new role was an exciting opportunity for Mr Gallen, the school community was sorry to see him leave. “Nick has been an amazingly stable influence for the school community during his tenure, and is well respected by all,” said Mr Leach. “His achievements during his Principalship at HSS can be ultimately measured by the improved environment for your children and their raised educational standards. Nick has led the HSS with clear direction, integrity, inclusiveness and authenticity.” Mr Leach said Mr Gallen had successfully spearheaded the refurbishment of the school hall and building of the multipurpose court, as well as moving the school to a two stream facility. More building works are scheduled for 2016 to complete the building of required class room facilities. “Nick has always been a very present and approachable leader. The P&F had a great farewell for Nick in November where he was presented with a David Hinchcliffe original of the school façade,” Mr Leach said. “The student body are gearing up for their chance to farewell Nick at their final assembly!” “The parent and student group thank Nick for the legacy he leaves with us, and we wish him every success in this new venture. Nick will be replaced in 2016 by Kim Davis.”

Suddenly it’s tar and cement, a few emaciated saplings trying and failing to lend some arboreal relief to an urban desert. This, however, will change if a proposal by a group of developers and professionals as detailed on page 5, is approved by council. It is difficult to see how the council could fail to do this. Those behind the proposal can see what is obvious to anyone driving along the river bank, which is that the stretch of streetscape between Ann Street and Vernon Terrace is barren and featureless. The council, in its infinite wisdom, has been content to

allow this to continue. If a group of concerned private parties are happy to conceive, design and fund a project which would convert Skyring Terrace into what it envisages as a sub-tropical boulevard, then surely that must be a good thing. A number of different council departments will be involved in realizing this vision and no one is suggesting that due process should not be followed. Political will, however, has been known to lubricate the bureaucratic wheels and it is to be hoped that the benefits that would accrue to both locals and visitors from this proposal will ensure that it garners the support in council that it deserves. The lack of parking in Longland Street is another issue that has been addressed by the proposal. More than 40 on-street spaces were lost when the Gasworks Plaza opened. Restoring some of these for short term parking would be a boon to local businesses as underground parking in the plaza, a victim of its own success, comes under ever increasing pressure. Neighbourhood Centre’s fitting farewell for Fiona

Chris Lloyd, Jennifer Egan, Fiona Hunt, Bette Bore Lan and Debra Fallon. IT was standing room only at New Farm Neighbourhood Centre last month as constituents, past and present staff, volunteers, dignitaries from all sides of politics and past and present board members farewelled Fiona Hunt, Centre Co-ordinator for the past six years. Many speeches, including a poem written by one of the constituents, made it clear that Fiona’s passion and commitment had earned her the respect of her peers and the love and gratitude of the many people who passed through the centre doors.

A precious Jem – taken too soon JEMMA May Christiansen of New Farm, was tragically killed in a car crash at Jondaryan in July this year. Adored only child of Chris & Hal (dec’d) Christiansen and loving fiancé to Sam Hooper (who was also critically injured in the crash), Jemma’s sudden death at the tender age of 30 has left her loved ones reeling. Jemma’s formative years were spent at the prestigious Toowoomba Prep School (now known as TACAPS). She thrived as a ‘Preppie’ & in grade 7 was awarded the Minnel Medal for Excellence – an honour bestowed upon the girl who had served her school best. Posthumous the school has proposed the Jemma Christiansen Award for Citizenship in Year 7. The Award will recognize the student who upholds the ethos of the school, reveals qualities such as empathy, initiative and considerations towards others, strives to set exemplary behavior, demonstrates a willingness to help, and displays good manners for the entirety of the school year. The Christiansen family moved to Brisbane in 1998 and Jemma spent two years at St Margaret’s Anglican Girl’s School before moving again to Melbourne, where she spend her senior years at Melbourne Girl’s Grammar. Jemma was a gifted school girl and high achieving continued. She rowed, played the clarinet &

The mother daughter duo were often spotted at their favourite coffee shops in New Farm Village, the weekend Powerhouse markets, shopping on James St & enjoying each other’s company over a crisp glass of wine at Cru Bar. With such a strong presence in the community, many locals have been devastated by

She was engaged to Sam, enjoying her day job at Sunwater, progressing through her CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and making good use of her sharp statistical brain building a betting program. She had found her groove in Brisbane and was an active participant on the social scene. BitterSuite, Sixes&Sevens, Watt Bar, Becoffino & Harvey’s were the home to many lazy Sunday afternoons sessions for Jemma and her friends. Jemma will be remembered for her kind nature, generosity of spirit , sense of fun and willingness to say yes. Jemma is survived by her mother Chris and her fiancé Sam.

DEVELOPERS and landscape and urban designers have combined forces to create a plan which aims to transform Skyring Terrace into one of the city’s great sub-tropical boulevards. The scheme envisages an extensive tree planting program with uplighting, fairy lights, a watering system, short term car parking and an improvement in pedestrian access, crossings and intersections throughout the precinct. It also extends to Longland Street with proposals for tree planting and changes to regulations to allow some short term street parking. These developers are hopeful of recovering something of the original but diminishing master plan benefits that were loudly proclaimed when the Newstead Riverpark precinct was first announced. The Newstead Riverpark area which has been progressively remediated and developed since 2001, largely includes the Gasworks Shopping Centre, Mirvac’s residential precinct Waterfront and the associated parklands connecting through to the Brisbane riverfront. However the area of most concern is the area with most activity – bounded by Skyring Terrace, Wyandra St, and Longland St, and centered around the

successful Gasworks Shopping Centre. The plan is currently being considered by the Brisbane City Council. Damian Thompson, a director with design studio Lat27, has been closely involved with the scheme and sees it as a huge plus for the precinct. Spanish balsa raft epic ocean adventure has Newstead finale

IN 1970, a Spanish adventurer named Vital Alsar, along with three crewmen, sailed La Balsa (raft in Spanish) from Guayaquil in Ecuador to Mooloolaba, the voyage taking 161 days and covering 13,784km.

37-year-old Alsar had been inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition which involved navigating 8000km in a hand-built raft from South America to French Polynesia. La Balsa, measuring 10.7 x 2.5 metres, consisted of nine carefully selected female balsa tree trunks, a metre in diameter, lashed together by hemp ropes. On this was attached a thatched hut containing folding stretchers and eating utensils. The raft’s design reflected drawings and accounts of similar craft seen by Spanish sailors far away from the coasts of South America during the 16th century. Asked why he’d embarked on

the voyage, the skipper said, “To prove how the people of Equador came 2000 years ago to the Pacific Islands; that it was possible to make this navigation.” Meals on board consisted almost entirely of fish that the crew speared. The craft even struck an artistic note, since its square sail, supported by two hardwood masts, carried a design painted by Salvador Dali, who was a friend of the captain’s. In 2008, one of La Balsa’s crewmen Gabriel Salas revisited Australia, and offered further detail about the craft’s design, including that it had no rudder. “The rudder wasn’t known in preColumbian South America,” he said. “We used ‘guaras’, or moving keelboards, also made out of hardwood, and inserted in between the balsa wood logs. These guaras – still used in Ecuador – significantly helped us to improve La Balsa’s capability of sailing across the wind, and thus choose her path between favourable winds and currents.” After a tumultuous welcome at Mooloolaba, La Balsa was towed to Brisbane and tied up at Newstead Wharf. Here it was finally lifted out of the water by Brambles Transport before being taken by long-loader

Consequently, the local performers are undervalued, and rely on their existing fans to make up the numbers. This year, Woodford will play host to a brilliant Australian group by the name of Madre Monte, who are very deserving of a headline sized crowd. I had the privilege of attending one of their shows in Melbourne, at the beginning of Madre Monte’s residency at the Ding Dong Lounge. Describing the group’s sound is nearly impossible given their many musical influences, as even their website struggles to classify them. For what it’s worth, Madre Monte is a nine piece South American Roots band, with heavy funk and reggae

influences. The majority of their music centres on both Colombian and Australian folk tales, with the lyrics varying between English and Spanish dialects. The group have been recording in a rural studio to maintain a relaxed sound, which is evident in their latest single Lo Que Hay. After listening to their catalogue I was pumped for the live performance, and was not disappointed when Madre Monte took the stage. As I sat waiting for the gig to start, the atmosphere was light and extremely casual. So casual in fact, that the preamble involved the drummer aimlessly hitting his toms, which caused several couples to leave immediately after arrival; possibly feeling deceived by the “tight rhythm section” promised in the band’s description. However, this offhand introduction was fitting, and lead to a relaxed and personal performance. The instant the group began, the audience was bombarded with a diverse range of sounds. A crisp and driving rhythm section laid the foundations for Madre Monte’s fantastic brass players to carry the melody. Between them were several guitars working traditional chord progressions from the Colombian South-West. This well polished sound cuddled

Madre Monte up to funk with a dirty slap bass, after giving reggae a fleeting peck on the cheek with light percussion sections. Thankfully, the group had selected their sounds well, with each instrument easily distinguishable from the others. As the set continued, the rhythm section maintained their warped Colombian progressions, with the brass adding a distinct hook to each song. This consistent beat (along with a charismatic bongo player) managed to pull everyone from their seats and on to the floor; a miraculous feat for a Wednesday night. Madre Monte maintained their swift pace

throughout the set, and left the stage to rapturous applause. As I left the Lounge, the funkfuelled chord progressions lingered in my mind, and refused to leave for many hours. Madre Monte create a sound unlike any I’ve heard. It’s big, fun and profoundly original. Madre Monte perform on various days throughout the Woodford Folk Festival, and are definitely worth seeing. Time right for noisy jet skis to find new aquatic runway I WRITE further to Mike O’Conner’s provocative and astute article, ‘the comment’ (Village News, November) where he advocated that Energex towers between Teneriffe and Bulimba be replaced with under-river power cabling; bravo! As one who frequently cycles the river boardwalks, and in keeping with the general low-key ambiance of all things riverside, may I add to the wish list and advocate for the exclusion of noisy jet skis which single-handedly may overturn a pleasant idyll with engine roar. I say this simply on the grounds of “fair’s fair” if in the interest of a substantial majority. I also live riverside (Moray St), as do some thousands of other residents. It would be intolerable for motorcycles to blare along Moray St for recreation, surely, then, the boys who enjoy the thrill of jet skiing would understand that the centre of Brisbane has outgrown tolerance for their racing antics; let’s be clear, it’s called a ‘jet’ ski. the Engine Room is breathtaking given the extraordinary lengths taken by Brisbane City Council to have its use as a licensed restaurant approved through the Planning and Environment Court. I don’t claim to be a town planner, but it is my understanding that the approval granted by the Court is for the Engine Room to be used specifically as a licensed restaurant, not as commercial office space. Presumably Council would need to submit a new development application to obtain any ability to use the Engine Room for the purposes of a commercial office. This would result in further expense to the ratepayer. In any event, as I understand it, the recent invitation extended by Cr Howard to business and community groups to use the Engine Room, comes with a catch that was not well publicised. As I understand it, the rent for this prime riverfront location is to be at commercial rates that community organisations are not likely to afford. In such circumstances, I question whether the offer to use the Engine Room will realistically result in any benefit to our local community groups. Carmen Mitchell

Challenges all part of the job for science student turned Valley police officer By Ebony Graveur IT ISN’T unusual for a university student to hold a part-time or casual job while studying at university. But unlike most 25-year-olds, Natalie Glossat completed her degree at QUT while working as a police officer. “I actually applied for the police when I was about halfway through my uni degree,” said Natalie. “So, I actually got in and put my degree on hold.” It wasn’t until last year that Natalie finished her degree in science. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the date on which women were first sworn into the Queensland Police Force. Eight women were sworn into the force in 1965, experiencing, for the first time, the same power and rank as male officers had always enjoyed. Constable Natalie Glossat, from the Fortitude Valley precinct, joined the police in 2012. “I can never really predict what a day will be like,” said Natalie. “It’s hard to pinpoint what happens in one day. Some days

Most social commentators agree that rudeness and intolerance in society is increasing. We’re not shocked anymore when people lose self-control because we see men and women behaving badly and disrespectfully all too frequently; trolley rage, road rage, phone rage, taxi rage, domestic violence. It can be zero to one hundred degrees in six seconds. There is a disconnection by the perpetrator that the person targeted has the physical sensation of feelings, that the person is human and that it matters to conduct oneself in a civil manner. Retail, sales, airline travel and hospitality to name a few industries, are somehow viewed as prime hunting grounds for rude people to vent their anger upon. Too often interactions are

devoid of common courtesy, grace or appreciation but full of judgement. Bullies, people with superiority complexes or people who are just plain rude often take out their dissatisfaction, insecurities and the stresses of their lives on others. Usually they’re unaware that their real inner anger and annoyance has originated because of the way they are managing their own lives. Some point towards modern day stress and the sheer pace of life as major contributing factors to the epidemic, not to mention our technologically driven societies’ where face to face interaction is becoming less practiced. There is also the notion that in hard economic times the benchmark for customer expectation is raised significantly giving way to a sense of entitlement. With Christmas, the most stressful time of year, around the corner I hope there’ll be some who will slow down at the checkout. Ask how the attendant’s day has been. Look in the eye of the bank teller. Share a joke with the car salesman. When the truth is revealed, it doesn’t matter how cool we think we are, how wealthy, educated, gorgeous, busy or important. How we treat others is a reflection on ourselves.

At lot of our jobs are generated from calls outs to people’s houses, traffic crashes, hospitals, public and private housing sectors. I enjoy assisting the general community. The Police Beat is busiest on a Friday and Saturday night where we are dealing with a large number of intoxicated people and multiple altercations.” In high school, Natalie studied biology, chemistry and physics. “I have always been interested to get into the scientific or the scenes-ofcrime field,” she said. “When I was at uni, I decided that I would like to work in that particular field in the police force. “I come from a bit of a sporting background so I like swimming, surfing, hanging out with my friends and my partner,’ Natalie said. “Occasionally going out, but not very often anymore.” Off duty, she occasionally encounters incidents that need

a response. “I do pay particular attention,” she said. “Obviously, if I see somebody playing up, I’m not really going to sit there and just watch it all unfold.” Being a police officer can mean never really feeling off-duty, but Natalie said the most difficult part was the “more gruesome” side of the job. “As you could probably imagine, when we attend sudden deaths we have to see the deceased,” she said. ‘I have to deal with the family in relation to those jobs. Nobody wants to come home at the end of the day to realise that their loved one has been lost.” She says the positives far outweigh the negatives. ‘I’ve been working with my team now for the last two and a half years in the Valley. And you find that, over the years, you form a bond with these people and it’s not only a work relationship. You can actually hang out with these people outside of work.” “The younger guys in my team, when we’re together we like to, depending on who it is, sing or

CONCERNED locals packed a meeting called by the Spring Hill Community Group last month to talk through the draft Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan. Spokesperson Kirsten Lovejoy said around 70 people had heard panel discussion and voiced their concerns about what was happening in the area. “More and more information is coming out that Brisbane has an oversupply of apartments and, with more on the way, the question has to be asked ‘why’,” she said. Ms Lovejoy said key messages from the meeting were: • Local and State Governments are ignoring what local communities want and need; • Developer donations to political parties are influencing outcomes, leaving people feeling disenfranchised; • Residential and commercial vacancy is high and impacting negatively on local business and sense of community; • High rise should not be built on the ridge-line and heights must be capped at five storeys adjacent to two storey character homes; • Changing work and commuting patterns are not being reflected in long term planning decisions – with less percentage of people coming into the city centre; • Heritage is important and needs to be respected; and • Parklands should be protected and green space expanded to support the increasing population. This column in the past year has focussed on the contributions we seniors make to our communities, here in New Farm and further afield. Unfortunately we remain categorised as burdens on society and no matter how we try to set the record straight, the label sticks. The cut-off date for eligibility for National Disability Insurance remains at 65; residential aged care facilities are chronically understaffed, yet the government mandates staffing levels for child care. The financial burden continues to grow and nowhere is the effect more evident than the independent retiree, people who saved for their retirement yet have to meet these ever increasing costs from a fixed income. Changes to superannuation impact disproportionately;

energy, water and rents rise; private health insurance premiums increase at double the rate of inflation; uncertainty surrounds the future of tax and the GST , and so the litany goes on. Meanwhile record low interest rates ensure that income from investments, no matter how shrewd, shrinks. So who is listening? National Seniors. We are the largest single advocacy group in Australia for the over 50s, but our voice only carries the weight of a quarter of a million, and many of these are more interested in the other benefits such a large organisation commands than in actively working for change. National Seniors has developed good personal relationships with those in the corridors of power and punches well above its weight, while our Branch is active in the New Farm community and, courtesy of the Village News, this column is read by others. If we are to overturn existing myths and prejudices we need a groundswell of support from local communities as well as more numbers to get the message across and gain that sympathetic ear where and when it matters most.

Congestion Busting Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade

Last week we announced our latest major congestionbusting infrastructure project, the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade. The upgrade delivers the best outcome for motorists, public transport users, pedestrians, and cyclists as the project not only tackles congestion by delivering travel time savings of up to 30 per cent, but also creates an estimated 3,000 jobs for our local economy. Everybody in our area uses Kingsford Smith Drive at some time. This stretch of road is one of the most significant routes in the city for Brisbane’s economic prosperity and has been operating at capacity for several years, with peaks of up to 70,000 vehicles a day. The Airport, the Port of Brisbane and major growth areas including Northshore Hamilton and the Australia Tradecoast are expected to generate about 30,000 additional vehicle trips per day by 2031 and that’s why we need this upgrade, to cope with future demand. The Hamilton Northshore precinct is a State Government controlled planning area expected to contain 6,000 new dwellings by 2031 and the only way in and out is along Kingsford Smith Drive. However, the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade will be much more than just a road project. The upgrade will also deliver significantly improved public transport, pedestrian and cycle facilities and will allow for a high frequency bus service to be introduced through the corridor. This project will deliver significant improvements for cyclists and pedestrians with on and off-road cyclist facilities and continuous pedestrian footpaths. As a major gateway to the city for tourists, visitors and residents, Kingsford Smith Drive will be transformed into a vibrant urban corridor that maximises public access to the river and reinforces Brisbane’s identity as a new world city.

WHEN established New Farm co-working office space Salt House was put up for sale, long term tenant Tom Cameron and his wife Anne decided the best way to continue to enjoy working there was to buy the business. “I moved my IT business into Salt Tom and Anne Cameron. Space in September 2013 when I was looking for more flexible accommodation for my team of five,” Tom said. “I was not looking for co-working specifically, but the flexible lease arrangements, the opportunity to connect with other businesses, and the vibrant atmosphere of the building and New Farm all attracted me to the place. “We feel very much at home here and enjoy what Lisa and James Wickham had created so when they announced that they had to move and very reluctantly sell the business, I was immediately concerned about who would take over and what would happen to the place.” Tom and Anne are keen to preserve the environment created by Lisa and James. IN JUST over 12 months The Triffid, the coolest venue in Newstead, has taken on the glow of one of Brisbane’s hippest venues. A great place to see a band, the room, which is a converted factory, has hosted a series of gigs that will become the stuff of legend. A few spring to mind such as You Am I’s recent engagement, The Church’s mighty two night stand and The Grant McLennan Fellowship which literally went ahead “rain, hail or shine” in one of the worst hailstorms Brisbane has seen in recent history. The venue is the brainchild of former Powderfinger bassist John “JC” Collins who dreamt up the concept with his business partner Brett McCall and an ally in builder Scott Hutchinson. The team transformed the exWorld War II hangar in Stratton Street into a state-of-the-art room for live performance. To celebrate its first birthday the venue hit Australian Music Month in November hard. A 14-day party saw everyone from The Vaccines to The Brian Jonestown Massacre tread the boards. There was lots of room for local artists with Robert Forster and the John Steel Singers standing out.

JC even joined in as one of “four/ fifths” of his old band Powderfinger as they rattled through the Neil Young song of the same name at Darren Middleton’s album launch. Picking favourites isn’t easy for JC. “There have been so many highlights over the past year,” he says. “The Sunnyboys and The Church, both of which I have loved since I was a kid and Bernard (Fanning) of course, The Delta Riggs, Conner Oberst, The Splendour Pre Party and the Bigsound Closing Party.

The Triffid. years and I was stoked 18 months ago when JC told me that he was opening a new venue name checking one of his favourite bands and calling it The Triffid. “I put my hand up to take care of the bookings and the marketing and we have been working very closely since that day. “I have worked in most areas of the music industry over the last 25 years but this is the first venue that I have been closely associated with. I

have been fortunate enough to attend hundreds of incredible music venues all over the world and without bias, The Triffid is one of the very best. “I am stoked to have booked the first show at the Triffid and hope to be part of the team for many years to come. Lifetime love affair with Lamington

PROFESSIONAL artist Dave Groom will this month hold his first exhibition in Brisbane in six years, focusing on the landscape that surrounds him at his studio on the edge of Lamington National Park, in south east Queensland. The theme for the exhibition, at the Graydon Gallery in Merthyr Road from 9 to 20 December, is Lamington National Park, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary. “Lamington National Park has been my backyard most of my life. Working from memory, I create drawings of the landscape that sometimes have a slightly surreal quality to them,” Dave said. “I focus on a subject, mood, time of day, or time of year, taking in the colours and textures of the open forest and rainforest of the local landscape. These drawings often become study works for larger oil paintings which have the scale that allows for a great sense of space and atmosphere. “Most of my vivid memories of Lamington are from my younger years. Roaming around the bush tracks my dad created in our backyard, or walking deep into the forest, stopping for homemade fruitcake and billy tea on a clifftop, staring across to deep valleys and gorges. “As a teenager I was fortunate enough to take several rites of passage, as I

This is becoming more important to me and I have developed a simple routine of observing nature and attempting to capture its essence,” he said. “Some of the work can be seen as direct observations of the landscape, while other pieces have a more surreal quality. AT LAST count, on Anzac Day this year when I had rung him, Alfred James (Jim) Campbell, then 93, was the youngest of a handful of Australian survivors of the original 14,000 soldiers in the “Rats of Tobruk”

Having known him all my life I determined last month to ask him if he would recount his story to me, a story which is so far removed from the life of younger Australians today. Upon arrival up Jim Campbell’s driveway to his Queenslander home, he was outside, in his white singlet, shorts, barefoot, and now whitehaired, hanging the laundry on the clothes-line. I was proud of him, my Uncle Jim. This smiling gentle man with his wife Nell had parented nine children and they are 73 years married. We climbed the long back stairs together to meet Aunt Nell and youngest daughter Glenda. We sat at

the long family table, and reminisced. These were no ordinary reminiscences. Sure, we went back to when I was a kid holidaying at their Brisbane suburban home, down from the sleepy village of Gunalda, north of Gympie, where Jim had first arrived with his family at age five. I will soon relate more about the later life experiences of Jim Campbell, but relate firstly of how some kids of the Great Depression Years grew up. Jim was the youngest of seven, and his Mum, my Grandma, Amelia Bignell, or Topsy as everyone called her, arrived in Gunalda at the start of the Depression to operate the local pub, which then as now, was the community centre of Gunalda, when the dance hall wasn’t open. Their Dad, Topsy’s husband, and my maternal grandfather, Bill Campbell, was a champion axeman, a timbercutter and dairy farmer from the Upper Coomera. Their seven kids, including the eldest girl, Jean, were all born in Southport Hospital, and all worked on the farm. Bill doubled as a scrub clearer and tree cutter up in the hinterland mountains between milking times. Topsy was the personality of the family, and always felt she’d make a great hotel host. Alfred James (Jim) Campbell. Gunalda pub, then five hours away by road from Upper Coomera, came on the market. Topsy did make a great host and the tills were pumping at the Gunalda pub until the Depression hit like a sledgehammer. Suddenly jobs were scarce and cash was short. Bill, the Showtime Woodchops champ, had to travel north to the Atherton Tableland to get timber-cutting work, so for a while things were paying off for the Campbell clan of Gunalda. Then a tragic blow, Bill had a huge rolling log fall on him, and he was in a very bad way. He recovered somewhat, but for a decade he struggled with the painful effects. At just 51, he succumbed. Topsy did not renew her lease of the pub, still during the tough Depression years, and Uncle Jim told me, “ Your mother, Jean, was more a mother to me than Topsy, who had her hands full first at the pub, then nursing Dad. When we left the pub, I had to leave school. I was 10, just in Grade 4, and I was sent for a year or so to Johnny Jacobsen’s farm to live, and work in the dairy. I learnt to shoot with a 22 rifle in the bush there, chasing wallabies and roos.” I guess in those days, the early 1930s, Grandfather wasn’t entitled to Workers Comp and injury insurance was unheard of. During his last decade, the five girls were married, led by Jean to a fellow teenager Jim Balkin, 19, and eldest of 11 children at Gunalda. Young Jim Campbell later followed Jim and Jean to Brisbane where the couple ran the little grocery store at the ‘country village’ of Kenmore. Young Jim soon found work on a nearby dairy farm. At 16, Jim went to Sydney for a year. His older brother Bill was about to join the army. But what inspired Jim to volunteer was one evening in Hyde Park where the WW1 Anzac War Memorial stands. He was playing around with some pals and suddenly he was motivated to seek adventure in the War. At just 17, he rode the train back to Brisbane to

volunteer. He and Bill became army truck drivers, and they had a send-off in the Gunalda Hall. On Christmas Day they departed for overseas from Redbank heading for North Africa, first in Egypt. Bill was left behind when many of the 2/9th Battalion departed Benghazi, Libya, for the Tobruk area to take the key Mediterranean port, haven and lynchpin, and defend it against the might of the more numerous, more heavily armed Germans led by the famous general, Erwin Rommel, ‘The Desert Fox’. Rommel was a brilliant leader but his Afrika Korps could not penetrate the semi-fortress of the entrenched Aussie Diggers. His propagandist tried to slur the Diggers, calling them ‘cornered Rats’, a term they embraced to stamp themselves as ‘The Rats of Tobruk’ – a badge of pride. “Slit trenches were hand-dug to five feet high,” said Jim, “just below our heads, in the sand and granite by us, and we camouflaged the trenches with timbers from the many shipwrecks in the harbour, and we hard-packed sandbags and ammo boxes into the trench walls. “It was very tough. We were stuck there for 242 days, or eight months, ensconced in our slit trenches, caves and dugouts all that time. It rained only once. Severely rationed, like a couple of mouthfuls of water a day, eating a diet of canned pilchards, bully beef and hard biscuits (they were still termed ‘dog biscuits’ when the writer did Nasho at Wacol). At the end of the siege, which we won when the Germans finally retreated, our average body weight was 44kg each. There were only nine or 10 of us in a slit trench. Until some mates were hurt or killed in our trench, we were so desperate with thirst -- under the searing sun by day, the constant dust storms, dodging shrapnel and bullets, scorpions by night (we had to check our boots), inability to sleep by light because of constant shell bombardment by artillery, gunfire, tanks, armoured cars, Messerschmitt

planes strafing by night, we even began to wish one more of our mates would be injured, even die to get an extra swig of water! That’s the stuff I still have guilt and nightmares about. I turned 18 in Tobruk. Some of us had put our age up to 20 to avoid parental consent to volunteer for ‘the great adventure’. “One Aussie officer at Gallipoli, Captain Leslie Morshead, re-enlisted for WWII and became Lieutenant General overseeing the Tobruk campaign. He and other WWII Gallipoli veterans were stunned at the helpless conditions the Rats had to fight under, and some were in agreement that ‘this is bloody worse than Gallipoli’! One day, our trench was leaderless when our NCO was killed and we took nine prisoners. We didn’t know how to contact Command to advise them, so we had to share some food and water, which was scarce, but the German prisoners were gentlemen captives.” The campaign was declared a ‘landmark in Australian war history noted for the singular determination of the Australians.’ According to the Australian War Memorial, 559 Australians lost their lives, 2450 were injured and 941 were taken prisoners by the Germans. When Tobruk was won, Jim had leave back in Brisbane/Gunalda, (his only injury was shrapnel to his under-chin, just missing his windpipe), and he fondly recalls the City Botanic Gardens open-air Dance Nights called ‘Empire

City’: “It cost sixpence to enter and that’s where I met Nell Appleton. Nell originally hailed from Curra, just a few kilometres from Gunalda coincidentally, and we married. “The War wasn’t over though. We fought in Europe, then were sent to New Guinea. I was not on the Kokoda Track, but the jungles around Wau were challenging. I led the first army truck convoy over the Owen Stanley Ranges; the Japs had taken Wau, and our forces came up behind them. Then our company were sent to country near Cairns for further training. We were there a long time, which we didn’t mind, but it seemed we had been forgotten. The War was over in 1945 and our battalion had seen more heavy action than anybody. “Civilian life was hard to adapt to after so much action at my age. When our third child James was born, I went west for six months fencing, needing extra money, then returned to Brisbane as a tramways conductor for a year. I drove a truck delivering produce from the Roma Street Markets before finding a job at Castlemaine Perkins filling wooden kegs. Six months of that, then a spell in the beer cellars before promotion as a shift brewer. I stayed there for 29 years. There were three shifts, day, afternoon and night, and I was the night brewer. I was in charge when the Brains of the Company went home.” Jim and Nell had nine kids, Judith and Helen who passed on,

Jim enjoyed Tallebudgera and played golf locally with his family, and bowls. Jim said, “I’ll probably have nightmares tonight after recalling all of this. After the War, I determined to shelve all the horrors and bad experiences to the back of my mind. Hard work and building a big, happy family has helped me try to forget. I went to the first Anzac Day March in 1946 in the city, but came home and cried. It was meeting up with old soldiers again and talking privately

The positives of my family, my job saw me through the worst of it. “The experience had a deep effect. I had only about 10 good mates through the War. I didn’t want to expand too much on that close-knit lot because you’d become good friends, then they’d be killed right next to you. I believe I am the youngest Rat remaining, and want to be around a little while longer yet.” The way my Uncle Jim Campbell looks, he should become a centenarian in a few years. His family hopes so, too. And oh, the writer’s Mum, Jim’s big sister Jean, christened me Gary Campbell Balkin.

Christmas Panforte

Owner and head chef of The Golden Pig Cooking School, Katrina Ryan, has spent many years mastering her Christmas creations and this year is no exception. Katrina shares her favourite recipe for Panforte with her students at her Christmas cooking classes.

Recipe

Grease and line small round baking tins (10-12 cm diameter) with baking paper. Gently heat 125g sugar with 150g honey until it dissolves, and then boil mixture until it reaches soft ball stage – 120C. Test by dropping a little in a glass of cold water- it should form a soft ball. Stir in 125g blanched almonds chopped, 100g hazelnuts, toasted, skinned and chopped, 100g mixed peel, 125g chopped dates, 1/2 tsp ground mace, 1/2 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp allspice, 1/4 cup cocoa powder and 1/4 cup plain flour. Press into the tins and bake in a 140C oven for 50mins. Cool, remove from the tins and then sprinkle with icing sugar. May be stored for up to 1 month. Celebrating 100 years of Judith Wright REMINISCENCE – A Festival of Judith Wright comes to the Judith Wright Centre at Fortitude Valley on Saturday, 5 December, starting at 1pm. Reminiscence is a one day festival of ideas celebrating the centenary of Wright’s birth, and launches a month-long exhibition of the same name. Presented by Flying Arts Alliance, the festival showcases visual art, performance and discussion in a series of free events at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. The day kicks off with a performance of Hearts Ablaze, a play inspired by Wright’s time living at her home ‘Calanthe’ in Mt Tamborine. Award-winning Brisbane based actor and director Jennifer Flowers will perform alongside a small cast. The play is followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr Janet McDonald, the expert panel speakers include art historian and academic Dr Sally Butler, writer and academic Dr Bronwyn Lea, environmental campaigner Gemma Plesman, and artist Judy Watson. The exhibition unveils a significant new body of work created by artists Fiona Rafferty and Frances Smith, inspired by Judith Wright’s life.

I spoke to a young couple this week who were keen for some general advice ‘Should we buy a new property on a small block or an old property on a bigger plot?’ The answer to some may seem obvious, but there’s a few things to consider in this equation. The two key ingredients in every real estate deal are at odds in many Queensland marketplaces currently. That is Land & Competition. Land is king when it comes to real estate capital growth. Land historically goes up in value, while bricks go down in price. That’s easily explained when you accept the value in the property today is that it looks new, fresh and lovely. In 10 years it will look like my 2005 trucker hat; out of date and unexplainable. In 2025 the land will have appreciated in value, but its working against the cost of a property that is now in need of improvement.

So you’d think the bigger the block the safer the investment. Which is usually true. However as any old wise property person will tell you ‘You make your money when you buy’. Which brings me to ‘competition’. The stronger the competition, the higher the price. With all the interest in the DIY shows there is a new wave of weekend warriors keen to get their ‘Block on’ and spruce up their dream home. Competition for the renovator is rife. It also goes beyond that, buyers seem currently more comfortable at the low-mid range price point of the market, even if that means paying a premium price for their ‘rough diamond’. This means the top end of most markets is actually representing good value. If you look at what renovators are selling for, add the cost of building and then look at the price of the new homes in that area you’ll probably see some pretty good value. Business almost as usual for pioneering real estate agent By Ebony Graveur LEE Paul, the principal of Raine and Horne, has smiled from posters on the sides of bus stops in and around New Farm for many years. In August, she sold her business after 30 years in the industry. Ivo Kornel bought the business from Lee, after working as a sales agent in New Farm for the past 10 years. The business is now Belle Property New Farm. “I wanted to step back a little bit so I could have a little bit more time,” Lee told Village News. ‘I bought a small Raine and Horne office, in August 1986,” Lee said. “I wasn’t in real estate at the time. I was actually doing commercial design.” Lee had just completed her real estate license, an interest she had pursued in the evenings, when the opportunity came up to buy the office. As her daughter Jacqui would come to dabble in the industry, Lee became the second in what is now a line of three generations in the real estate business. “I suppose deep down I always had a hankering to get into real estate. I grew up with it, and the opportunity

came up,” she said. “My father was in real estate, with a very old company called Curry and Mooney, which was based down on the Southside. “It was very much a man’s world 30 years ago, so you’d have to work a bit harder and so forth. “There were very few female principals, and certainly none in New Farm or Teneriffe.” Lee has lived in and around New Farm for the past 30 years. “I’m
