Irreverent and humble man makes it into history BY DAN KELLY

River strategy all adrift without moorings village comment

David Gibson was a generous, kind and irreverently funny man.

From an early age David Gibson demonstrated his love for music and history. David thrilled audiences as a boy soprano at Churchie with renditions of the Battle Hymn of the Republic and leading roles in Ruddigore, The Mikado, Gondoliers, Iolanthe and The Yeoman of the Guard. And as a navy cadet he became interested in Queensland naval history. David went on to study Australian history and politics, graduating with honours. He commenced work as a graduate researcher at the Queensland State Archives but he is mostly remembered for sharing his extensive knowledge of Brisbane’s history. David directed Newstead House for 36 years, appeared regularly on radio and conducted heritage tours of Brisbane and beyond. For radio 4BC’s Greg Cary and the ABC’s Steve Austin, David was the “go-to man” for Queensland’s history. David gave his time freely and generously to encourage our appreciation of history. Classical music for him was both an opportunity for solitude and shared excitement.

He volunteered much of his time on 4MBS with his good friend the late Howard Ainsworth. Though David could not be described as a fitness fanatic, he trekked Machu Pichu, rode a donkey around the site of Petra in Jordan and travelled to St Helena where Napoleon died and the Galapagos Islands where Darwin was inspired. In 2016 David published his only book The Brisbane River Heritage Trail, though he contributed many articles and chapters. David Gibson was a generous, kind and irreverently funny man. Most importantly he was a humble man. He would remark that no one would come to his funeral, so don’t make a fuss. How wrong he was. David passed peacefully with his favourite classical music playing and three history books on his bedside table. At his memorial, his sister SueBelinda led the congregation in David’s favourite chant “History Rules!”

It’s a great thing to have a strategy but another altogether to act on it. Governments love them for when accused of inaction they can say: “Ah, yes. But we have a strategy!” The strategy, all too frequently, is to have a strategy that can be rolled out when required and then quietly shelved. The Brisbane City Council then, has any number of strategies to demonstrate that it is acting in the best interests of ratepayers and one of them is called the “River’s Edge Strategy”. This was released in 2013 and among the many good and great proposals it contained was the construction of what was called a “RiverHub”, which was to be a public marina and tourist boat terminal. Another was the establishment of a network of short-term mooring sites for recreational vessels and

the development of additional boat ramps. There were also to be water taxis and more bridges for pedestrians and cyclists. Those waiting for more bridges are advised to build a raft but public marinas and boat ramps are an achievable goal and should be at the forefront of the Council’s river strategy for 2017. There is a need for public moorings for casual users so that people can tie up their tinnies, step ashore and enjoy the delights of our River City. It’s a facility available now only to our wealthier citizens with private moorings. As part of its River’s Edge strategy, the Council spent $900,000 to put a café in the Engine Room at Teneriffe, money many in the local community regard as ill-spent. If it can throw that sort of money at a café, it can start acting on the grand scheme outlined in its 2013 strategy and invest in some public infrastructure such as boat ramps, jetties and moorings.

BY JAMES JESSUP Nearly 40 Central Ward residents have been welcomed as Australian citizens in a local citizenship ceremony organised by the New Farm Rotary Club and Brisbane City Council. Cr Vicki Howard said the local citizenship ceremonies were made possible with the support of Rotary, particularly Elaine Morgan who had been a long-time organiser of the ceremonies. “Local champion Elaine Morgan has been in charge of organising citizenship ceremonies for Rotary for longer than anyone can remember,” said Cr Howard. “Our local community is filled with people like Elaine who generously give their time and energy to help me build a better Brisbane – our city would not be the diverse, friendly and strong community it is without these individuals.” The citizenship ceremony was held on Australia Day and was attended by Trevor Evans MP, Cr Vicki Howard, the

Tree report draws response It was concerning to reading the article in relation to the fig trees in front of the Winchcombe Carson Woolstore in Teneriffe (Village News Dec 2016). It is true that the body corporate of this building voted to have the trees removed after being advised that the roots were damaging the footings of their heritage-listed building. The fig trees should never have been planted in a residential community and Vicki Howard and her council were prepared to remove them (at their cost) while the trees were still young enough. The article certainly made mention of the option to install a root-barrier wall to manage the impact of the roots to the building.

NEWS However, more careful investigation would have revealed that the cost of such a root wall would be in excess of $50,000 and such cost would be borne by the Winchcombe Carson Body Corporate. This is why the body corporate voted to have the trees removed. Council also advised that they would be willing to replace the fig trees with a more “building friendly” species that would be a decent size and which would grow to provide adequate street cover, while not damaging the building in the future. Mr Perkins of the Teneriffe Progress Association made reference to the trees as “iconic figs”. They may well be iconic but it is irresponsible to continue to allow them to damage a heritage building such as the Woolstore in front of which they are planted. They may add a lot of value to the streetscape but they are damaging the value of this building. Anyone taking an observant walk along the front of this building would be able to see the damage to the footpath (also dangerous in its raised platform as a result of the roots) and the cracks to the footings of the building. Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard has acted in a responsible

manner to allow investigation into the removal of these trees. The Teneriffe Progress Association representative, Mr Perkins and Dr Plant have not acted in the best interests of this heritage building in halting this work for long-winded discussions that have already been resolved for the good of this community. More Engine Room questions than answers Mike O’Connor could well ask “Go figure” (Fair’s fair for New Year, we hope, January 2017) when he ponders the BCC’s awarding of a nine-year lease to a “not-for-profit” organisation that promises a small percentage of its profits as lease payment. A bigger question is why the Council, having said it couldn’t find the money to improve the Engine Room sufficiently so it could be used for its intended purpose – community use – can suddenly come up with more than $1 million to make a restaurant of it?

DON’T SIT

And then, instead of ever intending to recoup this waste of ratepayers’ money, Council awards it virtually rent free, thus enabling the successful tenderer to enter the already saturated restaurant market here on the peninsula with a huge rent advantage over existing cafes and restaurants. Certainly NOT fair to them, I’d venture, Mike?

Progress group agenda The Teneriffe Progress Association says it will discuss the future use of the Shed, the status of the dispute regarding the fence at Mactaggarts Place, the “Gloria the sheep” statue, and trees on Vernon Terrace when it meets this month. The association’s first regular monthly meeting of 2017 will be on Wednesday February 15 at 7pm in the Shed, 29 Macquarie Street. Interested residents of Teneriffe are welcome.

Autohaus revs into Brekky Creek BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON The soil has just been turned on the Breakfast Creek Wharf site, ushering in the start of construction on the Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Autohaus. The development is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to revitalise the northern end of Newstead by creating an iconic leisure, entertainment and hospitality precinct. Mercedes-Benz Brisbane dealer principal Shane Parkins said the Autohaus would contain a showroom, a full-service dealership, a classic-car museum, a service centre and retail, along with a family-friendly café.

“The Autohaus represents a new way of doing business into the future and will generate in excess of 300 on-site jobs during construction,” Mr Parkins said. “It will also create around 100 additional jobs post-construction through its museum, staff training centre, restaurants and retail spaces.” The world-class design has been developed with Mercedes-Benz and acclaimed local architects CotteeParker, housing public event spaces and a rooftop event space in what is being described as a “GOMA-esque” design. The site will also have a highquality river walk and along with the refreshment of the foreshore and Ross St Park precincts will link through to the walkways of Newstead House allowing for a superb exercise and relaxing space. Construction is expected to commence this month with an estimated completion of the site by July next year.

Car park to showcase local artwork Local QUT design student Tom Emmett has won a competition to design a major artwork for the façade of Lendlease’s new multi-level Kings Co-op car park at the Brisbane Showgrounds. Tom’s work was chosen from four shortlisted entries after an initial judging round and will use a series of 10cm white diamond-shaped pixels placed at junctions on the mesh façade fronting King Street and Alexandria Street. This specific pixel mechanism was created by the Buchan Group and the car park façade will be the pilot canvas for the installation and the first artwork of its kind in Brisbane. Tom, 22, is in his final year of his Bachelor of Industrial Design degree at QUT. He said his design was inspired by the continual flow of people, ideas, producers, livestock and culture

My design utilises the pixels to represent the journey from regional Queensland towns to Brisbane city. “I’m very honoured to have been chosen and excited to be working with the team at the Buchan Group and Lendlease,” he said. Brisbane Showgrounds project director Andrew Hay said public art can make a place unique, captivating people who pass by. “When you consider the great cities of the world, they all incorporate a large degree of public artworks and creative design. “We are working to incorporate art and design in all elements of the Brisbane Showgrounds redevelopment,” he said. Kings Co-op is under construction at the showgrounds and is scheduled to open in time for Ekka this year.

hello Brisbane

BETH J LEACH The quintessential summer game of cricket reigns supreme at our home, fuelled largely by Harvey’s decision to learn the sport at Terrace, in term one of Grade 5. Not since my own teens have I been so involved in the game, reminding me of the importance of sport throughout our lives both from a participation level and as a spectator. There was a time when I knew all the player’s names and scores, visited the SCG and MCG, adored Richie Benaud and photobombed the likes of Rod Marsh, Kim Hughes and Viv Richards. I recognised that sport enabled me to share quality time with my father, so I threw myself into dedicated and lengthy bouts of armchair cricket. He and I sweated into the back of our chenille sofa in sweltering temperatures. I was 12 and these were undoubtedly some of the closest

and happiest times I ever had with my dad. As I squeezed into my Lycra this morning for 5km of stepping on my elliptical cross-trainer, I took a moment to reflect on the changing capabilities of my body and the sports I’ve played in my life. Injury has dictated when the final curtain fell on some of the higherimpact sports I’ve played such as tennis and gymnastics. Now I’m favouring participation in low-impact sports and activities. I’m rationalising it as self-preservation. Our children will learn lessons and discipline, as we did, by participating in team and individual sports which will hold them in good stead for life. Being the “support crew” for our kids and their sports is an important role. It’s a glue that bonds and galvanises our family and most importantly provides a connection point to our children. This I value more than anything else. That’s not to say I don’t allow myself the occasional, personal “HOWZAAAATT?” moment at beach cricket when given half the chance.

A tale of froth and bubbles

TONY JONES The French do a vast number of things superbly and with innate style: fashion, architecture, food and wine. They can design with élan, anything from bottle tops to automobiles. The world stands aside in admiration. However their approach to, or understanding of, coffee is paradoxically abysmal. Vince Anello, owner of the fabulously successful New Farm Deli, once told me: “Australians take their coffee very seriously.” It’s not unusual for an Australian to return their cafe latte if it’s not of a good standard and confidently explain its shortfalls, be it aroma, acidity, blend, temperature inconsistencies or the milk froth-to-coffee ratio. He says: “Australians have turned the milk coffee into an art form.” Our sophisticated coffee culture at home has the unsurprising potential to cause disappointment when travelling abroad. The French approach to the morning cup of Java is to swallow an espresso hurriedly, without thought or appreciation, short with almost treacle-like consistency. An Australian will also order their morning espresso … but watch them before they drink it.

The aroma is tested, the crema looked for and temperature measured by cupping the beverage in their palm. Only then is it taken with satisfaction. Starbucks proliferate in Paris and for me it’s a litmus test of the local population’s level of sophistication in coffee appreciation. In Australia, Starbucks failed miserably. We didn’t take to it. The company failed to grasp the Australian seriousness when it comes to the quality of their favourite cup of Java! We are reputed to be easy going in our attitude. “She’ll be right mate! No probs!” However this accommodating attitude is never extended to our coffee! I walk along the rue Vieille du Temple bundled up in scarf, overcoat and leather gloves. It’s -5deg and still dark at 8am. A grey fog shrouds my surrounds in a damp, clinging embrace. Ahead I see the welcoming glow of a small corner cafe. Inside, patrons stand at a nickeltopped bar. Tentatively, I push the door open and the rush of hot air, seasoned with stale tobacco smoke and coffee aroma, almost overwhelms me. A muscular black man is cutting oranges behind the counter. On a wall high above the espresso machine, a television transmits flickering images of President Francois Hollande on the steps of Palais Garnier. I realise too late that I’ve entered one of the small cafes catering to the early-morning needs of tradesmen and delivery men seeking a restorative coffee and pastry to help keep the bitter cold at bay. The refinement of my wardrobe – cashmere scarf, fine wool overcoat and leather gloves – a glaring juxtaposition of style when compared with the hi-vis vests, felt jackets and serviceable, fingerless

The taste is of ants, indicating burnt milk, and the only nod to coffee I could discern had the rather disconcerting taste of chicory root. I swallow bravely, my eyes watering at its bitterness. “Excuse me, monsieur,” intervenes a throaty voice. It’s my neighbour with the dead fox coolly observing me through a blue veil of cigarette smoke. “Dip your pastry in the coffee, it will help kill the bitterness.” I follow her directive and find the coffee is improved marginally by the immersion of the croissant. “You are Australian?” she enquires, pinching the end of the cigarette coal dead with moistened finger tips and returning it to a tortoiseshell case. I nod. “Ah. You will be disappointed with our coffee. However, hopefully, you will be impressed with every thing else.” She stands, walks to the door, pulling on long leather gloves and adjusting the fur stole to a position affording better protection from the outside elements. At the door she pauses, turns, looks at me and says: “My suggestion … avoid the coffee at all costs and concentrate on the champagne. You will have a much better time of it!”

woollen mittens worn by the cafe’s more regular patrons. The brawny barista behind the bar looks at me with detached appraisal. “Bonjour,” he says, wiping his hands clean of orange juice. “Bonjour. Puis-je avoir un cappuccino s’il vous plaît?” My French is hesitant at best and non-existent at worst. “No! I don’t make the cappuccino!” he responds with awful emphasis in English. My annihilation is complete. I’m painfully aware I’m now the cynosure of all eyes in the cafe. “You don’t make milk coffee?” The man’s handsome face softens slightly. “I will make a cafe au lait. You are in Paris.” After placing my order, I seek refuge at a miniscule bistro table. Close at my elbow sits a woman, smoking, wearing a cloche hat and a dead fox draped around her shoulders. She exudes an air of faded elegance and tired sensuality, not unlike a character from a Jeanne Moreau film. Moments later, my coffee is delivered along with a large buttery croissant. Taking my first sip of the steaming drink, I’m unprepared for the horrific shock of it.

Soireé for charity Riverside Receptions at New Farm will host a soireé later this month organised by opera singer and cervical cancer survivor Lisa Lockland-Bell, who has lined up some of Australia’s best singers and musicians to raise funds for women’s health in Nepal. It will be on Saturday, February 25. As an ambassador for the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) Lisa will trek into the remote Langtang area of Nepal to help rebuild a badly damaged health services buildings for women and girls through the “Hearts for Health Challenge”. “After surviving cervical cancer more than 12 years ago, it just made sense to be associated with ACCF who say and think a lot of what I believe about women’s health,” said Lisa. “This is an incredible opportunity for me to give back.” For tickets, go to www.eventbrite. com/e/lisas-soiree--tickets-29736284026

Wendy Peard (left) and Carolyn Wagner … tops at festivals

Local short film picks up international gong Before even making it to production, the script for the locally produced short film Teal Soldiers had already been accepted into eight international festivals, won semifinalist in the Monthly Film Festival in Los Angeles and topped the LA international film festival. It will hit the screen at Loganholme Village Cinema on February 26 at 4pm, appropriate since this is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month for Australia. Part of the profits would go to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research ovarian cancer research

department, said writer and producer Carolyn Wagner. “There were many charities we could choose from but finding a cure is the most important thing we could give to,” she said. Local actor Wendy Peard landed the role of Nurse Jackie. Wendy only started acting three years ago and already has a number of credits to her name including plays at New Farm’s Nash Theatre and also at the Powerhouse. She has lived in New Farm for almost nine years in the same house that her husband grew up in.

Her daughter goes to New Farm State School and she said she loved the community on the peninsula. “My best friend’s mother died of cancer when we were just 25 years old,” said Wendy. “I think raising awareness about ovarian cancer through the making of Teal Soldiers is a great cause to be part of. “I am proud to have played a small role in this film with wonderful giving people.” Carolyn Wagner is no stranger to New Farm herself. She has been involved in four productions with Nash Theatre and worked a few years at Premier News. “As a survivor of ovarian cancer myself, it is of utmost importance for me to let women know the signs.” Wendy was originally cast as an extra. Carolyn and director Jonathan Creed were in awe of her talent but at the time there wasn’t a role she could fit. But after only a short time on set Wendy’s talent was evident and she was upgraded to become the originally unwritten character of Nurse Jackie. Last year you would have seen my plans for the major tree plantings along Brunswick Street - new trees, garden beds and 600 plants will be delivered this Spring to create an even better local environment . We’ve also been working hard to identify places in Teneriffe for more street tree plantings and I am pleased to report that officers have found 13 new spaces for tree plantings along the busy Commercial Road Precinct. Commercial Road is obviously quite congested with driveways and underground utility services, but we will try and get as many more trees into Commercial Road as we can. It’s all part of our plan to deliver a cleaner greener and a carbon neutral Council.

Brisbane Central and Holy Spirit Schools are also participating in Council’s Active School Travel Program – an initiative that encourages walking, cycling, scootering, carpooling and public transport.

Adventurous boys and girls aged 6-14 can join the local Scouts and learn how to camp, bushwalk, abseil, canoe, sail, tie knots, fish and use a map to navigate. Scout leaders say these skills help children become more self-reliant and confident leaders. Brisbane Central Scout Group has been active in the community since 2012. They’re planning a year of outdoor activities and action for participants known as Joeys, Cubs and Scouts. Sign-on day is Tuesday, February 7, at 6.30pm at New Farm State School Hall (or contact Oswald Blacker on 0437 375 871 or brisbanecentralscouts@gmail.com). Parents are also needed to be involved with their children.

This dedicated team of Brisbane drivers have transported thousands of passengers throughout the state, including more than 2500 regional cancer patients who needed transport to treatment centres or accommodation. Now picture that every couple of minutes you must turn to your left, and speak to a line of strangers, and then calculate a fare and then calculate change. And you must do this all day long, and the same time, you are expected to deliver a regular stream of coherent sentences. Now imagine that computer is a 20-tonne bus full of commuters, and every mistake you make is potentially life-threatening and there is no auto-correct. No wonder the bus drivers are happy as people stream on board and as they tap and go, their only job is to give a cheery good morning. I still wonder what the kids would have done if I hadn’t been reading downstairs the day they decided on a beach bus adventure. They had never wondered off by themselves, but that day, they seemed pretty set on their agenda. Maybe it was the images of a surfer and the South Bank arbour on the Go Card that sparked the connection between the bus and the beach!

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFELY

As a child, I rarely caught the bus. My memory of the times that I did was of hot, smelly and bumpy old buses. I have been living in New Farm for 20 years but I only really started catching the bus when my children were born and was relieved to discover that the buses today are very comfortable and a far cry from when I was a child. Our kids love riding on the bus. Most weekends we take the bus to GOMA and back and sometimes when out for a morning walk, we catch it to the Valley, cross the road and then catch it back again. When our children were much younger, early one morning on a public holiday, I was sitting reading in the living room when I heard the kids get up and dressed. They came down the stairs chatting about catching a bus to the beach, in their swimmers, hats on and carrying buckets and spades. We had recently returned from a beach holiday and they had heard an early morning bus in the next street and decided that today would be a great day for an adventure. When they spied me, they exclaimed: “Oh, Dad, we are going on an adventure, would you like to come?” “Sure,” I said. “Oh good. By the way, do you happen to know where we can catch a bus to the beach?” I thought for a minute and then we set off on the 199 to South Bank beach. We had a great morning and were back in New Farm at 8am. The thing that I noticed most on the rare occasions that I did catch the bus during my childhood was that the bus drivers were very cranky.

I notice now when I catch the bus, the bus drivers are almost always very friendly. I had not given much thought to why and just assumed it was because now they drive these brandnew gas-powered air-conditioned buses, rather than the old hot and smelly diesel monsters. But lately I have come to think it is mostly to do with the Go Cards. Imagine yourself sitting at your computer and doing a very dangerous job like writing an email. Let’s assume it is a long one and a bit complicated, so you have to concentrate.

Top award named after winner Footprints’ first “Volunteer of the Year” Jeanette Ayre has been sharing weekly music and joy with clients in the organisation’s Centre Based Activities (CBA) program since 2004. Each Thursday clients look forward to Jeanette’s visit as she brings her guitar and together they sing songs that fill the offices with music. The Thursday CBA group, called “Music, Mayhem, Mates”, is considered quite an institution at Footprints, with many new staff members handed a microphone and encouraged to sing with the group as part of their unofficial induction to the organisation. “Jeanette has seen a lot of changes at Footprints over the past 12 years,” said Peggy Skehan, senior manager of services and operations. Peggy is a friend of Jeanette and originally asked her to volunteer. “Footprints was still called New Farm Community Options and we were based in Sydney Street, New Farm.

Volunteer coordinator Sabina Nowak (left) congratulates Volunteer of the Year Jeanette Ayre, joined by senior manager of services and operations Peggy Skehan.

“Since then, Jeanette has moved with us to Commercial Road, Teneriffe, and now to our newly opened Light Street premises.” “It is fitting that we were able to acknowledge Jeanette’s achievements in front of our clients, especially Donna and Sally, who were there that first day Jeanette started, and who have continued to attend each week.” Staff and clients sang a tribute to Jeanette, inspired by one of her favourite songs, The Happy Wanderer. “Footprints’ Volunteer of the Year Award has been named after Jeanette, the inaugural recipient, to honour her as our longest ever serving volunteer”, explained volunteer coordinator Sabina Nowak. “In years to come, future Footprints volunteers will also receive the Jeanette Ayre Volunteer of the Year Award.”

Jeanette said she was still coming to terms with the award. “Such a lovely surprise, and loved my song!” she said. “As for my award, I will be finding the perfect place for it in my home so that each time I look at it I will be reminded of the amazing people who have travelled the musical journey with me over the past 12 years. “So many special, gifted and beautiful souls. “And the additional bonus that it will continue in my name year after year … I am so humbled. “I would like to thank Footprints for allowing me the unique privilege of sharing my Thursdays with such a special community, clients and staff. “For this I feel truly blessed. “This is just wonderful and I will treasure it always.”

Now it’s positioning itself as one of the suburb’s go-to restaurants for quality meals at an affordable price. Owner and chef Anurodh Bhattarai came to Australia from Nepal in 2008 and quickly made a name for himself in the hospitality industry. His passion for cooking led him to open his own restaurant last year, the only one in Brisbane to offer 21 different parmigiana styles – all cooked with fresh ingredients. “We use fresh chicken with our parmigiana, we crumb it ourselves with a panko crumb, only once it is ordered. We never use frozen chicken,” Mr Bhattarai said. He said that although the Valley offered a range of restaurants, he wanted to focus on affordability and consistency for local residents. “In the Valley there are so many expensive meals and people can’t afford that all the time.

As life returns to normal in the Brisbane summer heat and humidity, no doubt the many grandparents in New Farm will join me in reflecting very happily on the memories shared with their children and grandchildren over the break. It is a great privilege to be able to share in the early life of a child, especially when the mother comes to the rescue to change that smelly nappy! Children will probably not remember that early contact – the subject of many happy snaps – but as they grow up, if one can maintain the contact, then the bond that develops is very special for both generations. “JUST as February closes, a vicious cyclone will have cut a track of devastation in north Queensland, and travelling south, will be a most disturbing factor in the meteorological conditions,” read Ogg’s Weather Forecast of January 4, 1909. Without the benefit of today’s sophisticated modelling, long-range weather forecasting 100 years ago was a courageous undertaking. Nevertheless, Mr Ogg’s assured prognostications were reported in newspapers the length and breadth of the continent. Naturally, the gentleman was not without his critics.

indications and results from year to year were stored up in written records and in his receptive mind.” The unofficial projections of this gifted amateur won the respect of many farmers who would hold off from planting until they knew “what Ogg has to say about it”. He is part of a Queensland tradition which has included Clement “Inclement” Wragge (1852– 1922) who had an observatory at his home at Swann Road, Taringa, Inigo Jones (1872-1954) and Lennox Walker (1925-2000) of the Crohamhurst observatory. Ogg never married and was described as “a kindly, unobtrusive man with a broad outlook on life”. Helping him with his forecasts was his well-known older sister, the crusader for social reforms for women, Margaret Ann Ogg (1863-1953). By the way, was Ogg’s forecast for February 1909, alluded to in the opening paragraph, accurate? You be the judge: the newspapers reported a “cyclonic storm” flattening buildings in Normanton (9 Feb), and a “destructive cyclone” in Thargomindah (24 Feb), while a “terrific cyclone” caused much damage in New Caledonia (16 Feb).

And it is raining now …” The forecaster was John Cumming Ogg (1869-1926) and his meteorological projections emanated from the handsome residence “Mascotte” in Brunswick Street (between Langshaw and Moreton Streets) where he and four unmarried siblings lived pre-World War I. He was one of the 10 children of Agnes (McKellar) and Rev Charles Ogg, who had been the long-time pastor at Brisbane’s Ann Street Presbyterian Church. Young Ogg had been educated at Miss Cargill’s preparatory school for boys and the Brisbane Grammar School. Though a tea merchant by occupation, J.C. Ogg’s real enthusiasm was for weather forecasting, a skill possibly inherited from a master mariner uncle whose weather forecasts were much regarded by fellow navigators. From an early age J.C. Ogg exhibited a penchant for science which led him to set up an amateur observatory where he took regular and frequent weather readings. The Venetian is ANFE Italian Club’s new weapon in the competitive Newstead restaurant trade and the 26-year-old has some grand plans for 55-year-old Italian icon. New Farm Village News caught up with the chef to discover where his love of cooking was born and why he thinks Australian seafood is boring.

JONNY, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A CHEF?

It’s been eight years now. I started when I was not yet 18. I’m really

proud of the choice I made. I could not imagine being in front of the computer all day. Being a chef is not easy though. You don’t have many holidays and it means late nights. But as someone once said: if you do the job that you like, you will never work a day in your life and it feels like that.

Q

WHO TAUGHT YOU TO COOK?

It probably started with my grandmother, my mother and my aunty. They were good cooks. We would use a big table and my grandmother would make fresh pasta on it and desserts. I suppose the passion started with me just playing with the flour.

Q

WHAT PROMPTED YOUR MOVE TO AUSTRALIA?

Before Australia I’d been in Shanghai for four years. I worked in an Italian restaurant there for three years and in the fourth year I was

looking for something different so my boss offered me a position in his catering company. I spent the year following motorsports around Asia like Audi, Lamborghini we were just travelling all around to cook for the drivers. Shanghai was great for work opportunities but the air quality was not good so I thought I’d come to Australia. I’ve got friends here.

Q

YOU TOOK JOBS ELSEWHERE WHAT DREW YOU TO ANFE?

I like the environment. It’s like being around family, like I’m home. It’s not too stressful and I feel a kind of freedom here. Maria says “I know you’ve got experience, you can do what you like.”

Q

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO HERE?

Just put the level up a bit. Most of the Italian restaurants around here are nothing special, you know. I’m

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO COOK?

It’s something we’re not doing here yet but I really like steak – big steak, 800g-1kg. I really love seafood too because where I’m from seafood is like bread. That’s where I’m a little disappointed in Australia. I was expecting more from the seafood but if you go into a shop here there are four or five common things: prawns, oysters, barramundi, kingfish and bugs. If you go to any fish shop in Italy you’ve got at least 20-30 kinds of fish and that’s inspiring for a chef. Here I find it a bit boring. But I understand why that may be. In Italy, fishermen don’t have to follow as many rules.

ingredients Bigoli Con Le Sarde SERVES 4 True to Jonny’s Venetian roots, he’s shared a seafood recipe and a brilliant one at that. His original suggests buying whole sardines and deboning them but I found fresh, filleted ones at a Hamilton seafood shop. Maria Maruca, president of ANFE Italian Club, warned Bigoli pasta may be hard to find so offered Bucatini as a substitution and I found it in a major supermarket. At the end, I employed a trick learned from Nigella Lawson: strip the herb-like fronds from the fennel stalks to use as a colourful garnish.

method Clean fennel and remove first outer layer. Slice into quarters lengthways then into fine slices, reserving the leafy fronds. Heat water in saucepan, add sliced fennel and braise until tender, about 15 minutes. Once cooked, drain fennel and reserve cooking water. Add a tablespoon of this water to saffron threads. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to a frying pan on medium heat, add onion and cook until translucent. Combine anchovies, pine nuts, raisins, tomato paste and saffron in the pan with onions and season with salt, pepper and sugar.

FOOD After a few minutes add braised fennel and three-quarters of the sardines to the pan: they will break apart while cooking. Simmer sauce for 10 minutes. Add a few tablespoons of the fennel cooking water to the pan if the mixture starts to look dry. Heat a second frypan and coat with remaining oil. Lightly dust remaining sardines in flour and gently fry until golden. Cook pasta according to packet instructions. Drain and toss in a bowl with the sauce. Garnish with the golden sardines and fennel fronds.

ONE OF NEW FARM’S BEST!

Stunning Home on Llewellyn Street... One of New Farm’s Best! New Farm 5 Llewellyn Street Location is everything. This pocket of New Farm is tightly held for a reason. It’s leafy, it’s quiet, it’s close to Brisbane’s trendiest cafes and you’re literally within a stone’s throw to the river walk. 5 Llewellyn Street, New Farm has been tastefully transformed into a home of discreet elegance. Having purchased elsewhere, the owners are not selling for the fun of it. They’re doing this to sell. This unique home offers the buyer a lifestyle of elegance and simplicity. Privately positioned from street level, this ultra-chic contemporary home is simply stunning. Perhaps the most notable feature of this house is the ability to add value. Plans have been drawn up to add in a second carport, and build in downstairs, creating the complete family home (STCA). From every inch to every corner, this house just exudes style. Honestly, you’ll be delighted to discover this private little oasis in the heart of New Farm. The irresistible combination of indoor and outdoor living will impress even the most discerning buyer. At every turn the property has been designed around privacy, and it can be said without hesitation that this really is, the ultimate entertainers’ lifestyle retreat.

January performed to the seasonal script. Tenants were out and open houses were chock-ablock! It was like drought breaking rain for many landlords around the inner city. We found properties for just over 100 tenants and we are still working with many others before the year gets into full swing. 2016 for many landlords saw vacancy rates and prices effected by a combination of a rising sales market, low interest rates and an increase in the number of available properties in the Inner City. So with many of the inner city’s rental properties now occupied the market can feel a slight sense of relief. But the writing for 2017/18 is unfortunately still on the wall with a huge number of apartments in the final stages of settling or construction. January was also decorated with an early wave of buyers and a surprisingly high number of properties sold. These sales have cleared the way for the traditional ‘Post Australia Day’ sellers who will hit the market in the coming days. All in all it’s a great start to 2017 and if the trends continue we should see the prestige market start to fire over the next 6 months. haesley is the local principal of living here cush partners and a columnist for the sunday mail. portions of this article may be an extract from his column.
